Links[edit]

Is this linked from anywhere? It might be lost to the abyss. 67.142.130.49 18:29, 2 March 2007 (EST)

Yes, although it's pretty deep into the structure from the main page.
Main Page links to All Games links to General:Main Page Links to here.
The lack of information garnered in a quick survey of the relevant pages leads me to believe that anyone can post fanfiction here. My apologies to other editors if I've overlooked something; if the dominant editors here want my fic (Shade-Eyes) removed, let me know and I'll comply. --Kementari 03:41, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
You're welcome to post here. The story starts interestingly too! --RpehTalk 07:42, 2 July 2007 (EDT)
How do you post Fanfic? I want to post my own. -Swiftstar
Easily done. In the location bar of your browser, change the "General:Fanfiction" part to "General:My Story". You'll get a message saying that the page doesn't exist yet. Create it, enter your text and off you go! You can link it in to the main page by editing "General:Fanfiction" and adding a similar link to the ones you'll see already on the page. Good luck! --RpehTCE 02:06, 5 December 2007 (EST)
I'm in the middle of writing my own fanfiction and i've changed the location bar of the browser to "general:The_Price_To_Pay"

and I'm creating the page, from there what do I do to get it onto this page when its finished? do i just edit the page and insert an internal link leading to the fanfiction page I'm making?--Repeater 07:18, 18 April 2009 (EDT)

A Few Questions[edit]

First, are the summaries taboo to edit? I ask because there are some that I'd like to reword, specifically the ones that begin with "Fanfiction" or "Fanfic," since anyone reading this page knows these are fanfictions.

Next, I was wondering about Honor Thy Brothers... it's credited to MadMax06, but his only edit was this one to Oblivion:Dagon Shrine. This story was added to the page by Vook. Does that break our copyright rules, or anything?

Finally, it seems strange to have red links for the authors' names. Should these three be changed instead to bold text, or links to the users' contribs pages? --GuildKnightTalk2me 22:28, 12 February 2008 (EST)

  1. Editing summaries, I'd say probably you shouldn't do, but you might inform the user of this, so they can choose to do if they wish - might be a problem since some of these people aren't active on the site anymore. It does seem a bit redundant, maybe, but it feels to me like editing the description is almost as bad as editing the fanfic itself, which is generally looked down on. The way I see it, Fanfics are really more an extention of the writers' User pages (one reason I've said before that think they should all be moved into the User namespace, as sub-pages or something. The links could remain here so that there's a central location, but I still do think that the actual fanfiction pages belong in User-space - that way the editor can maintain more control over their own work, and it's clear that these pages do not represent the site as a whole.)
  2. Couldn't tell you what the deal is with Vook and MadMax06. You'd have to ask them.
  3. I'd say keep the red links there - if the author chooses not to create a user page, that's their perogative. Though you might make suggestions on their talk pages to that effect. Up to you.
Just my opinions here. Other people might disagree with me. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:53, 12 February 2008 (EST)
Personally, I don't think that there is any taboo against editing fanfiction. On multiple occasions, editors have modified fanfiction that was not created by them (spelling, grammar, dividing pages, etc.) These are not articles posted in the User namespace, but rather articles posted in a standard wiki namespace, and every time somebody submits some fanfiction the standard warning about "being editing mercilessly" appears under the editbox; in the discussion about whether fanfiction should be kept on the site, it was clearly stated that the site's copyright implies that fanfiction posted on a wiki can be freely edited. There may be some limits to what's acceptable, but in reality that applies to every wiki article: the content should be appropriate for the article. So just as you wouldn't replace the contents of Oblivion:Chorrol with Oblivion:Daedra Heart, you wouldn't replace a fanfiction article with something completely different. Basically, if someone is not comfortable with posting his/her fanfiction given the site's standard editing practices, then the fanfiction shouldn't be posted here; there are many other sites that are better suited for fanfiction.
All of which is a long-winded way of saying that I think you are free to edit the fanfiction summaries, especially to make changes such as removing fanfiction from the descriptions.
I don't see that it breaks the site's copyrights for Vook to post an article and attribute it to MadMax06. I'd assume that there was some offline interaction between the two. If MadMax06 were to raise an objection then we could decide what to do, but otherwise it seems like there's no problem.
The redlinks don't particularly bother me, but if you think it would be preferable to change them, I don't have any objections. --NepheleTalk 14:58, 13 February 2008 (EST)
Your first point perfectly illustrates why I still believe that fanfiction should be in User space. Typically if you write something like this, you generally have a personal connection to it, and would prefer not to have other people mess around with it. Putting into User space is the best way of saying "This story is mine, please leave it alone." Since there's not likely to be much in the way of factual contributions to fanfiction (since it's by definition not content seen in or confirmed by the games), there shouldn't be any reason for other people to edit your fanfiction (except for the occasional spelling/grammer tweak). You can't write fiction objectively, and hence it will always be something that is personal. There's a place for all things personal on this site, and that's precisely what the User space is for. Keep in mind, I'm not trying to just hide away the fanfiction where nobody will see it. Having this page here in General namespace to link to each of the submitted stories is still perfectly acceptable. I just think that the stories themselves should be in User space, particularly if their authors would prefer not to have their work messed around with by other people. --TheRealLurlock Talk 22:48, 14 February 2008 (EST)
My thoughts:
  • I agree with moving the fanfictions to userspaces, though I'm sure it needs more community discussion.
  • It seems to me that a page (like this one) in the General namespace should be okay to edit, simply so that stories can be better summarized and differentiated. Perhaps we should add a notice to this article that the summaries may be edited. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I won't do anything until everyone is in agreement. --GuildKnightTalk2me 01:00, 16 February 2008 (EST)
I've attributed Honor thy Brothers to Vook and changed the links for Piratesahoy and Daveoten to their contribs pages. Dagoth Ur, Mad God T C E 03:21, 12 April 2008 (EDT)

Redguard[edit]

There is no section for Redguard Fanfiction, does that mean you don't allow it? Or has no one contributed.--Puddle 12:20, 1 March 2008 (EST)

No one contributed yet. Feel free to add the Redguard section if you have a fanfic for it. Vesna 12:34, 1 March 2008 (EST)

Content[edit]

Are there some rules that apply to fanfiction? I was wondering if I could write a story in which a character defecates on a statue. --Twentyfists 11:16, 4 March 2008 (EST)

The rules are the same as for the rest of the site. There's a fair amount of bad language in the TES Games so we don't try to pretend it doesn't exist, but there's no need to go overboard. If it's really necessary then go ahead. –RpehTCE 11:28, 4 March 2008 (EST)
Thanks, but I decided that I wouldn't include it anyway. Bad language in fanfiction never went over very well with me, so I can only imagine how badly defecation would go down. --Twentyfists 21:45, 7 March 2008 (EST)
Well take the quest on Oblivion, 'Newheims Flagon'. At the end he says something like; "Ah finally I can take a drink without it having to taste like goblin piss. There are many more examples like that on these games. --Matthewest TCE 05:50, 29 April 2008 (EDT)

A silly question[edit]

Just a normal question, prose is the form of writing sort of how we think everyday, and dosen't have to be poetic or funnny or anything right?--Puddle 22:54, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

"The ordinary form of spoken or written language, without metrical structure, as distinguished from poetry or verse." [1]RpehTCE 01:46, 7 April 2008 (EDT)

Very Bginner Question[edit]

I was wondering ow do write a fanfiction. i would like o know rules and conducts ect when witing fan fiction and i would like to know to acces the writer where i may post my own fanfaction. M.trix Suday April 27(EST)

You can create fanfic pages under your own userspace, such as here: User:M.trix/Fanfic you could then add links to it from your own userpage to make it easier to access. by the way, if you want to add your signature to talk pages, just add four tildes like this. ~~~~ --Volanaro 05:27, 28 April 2008 (EDT)

Comedy/Prose[edit]

Ok, should Comedy and Prose be in one section or not. I think they should be, as the definition of prose is more or less any writing that's not poetry. There are always going to be loose borders here. Should the limericks be in Poetry or in Comedy? But I'm pretty sure that most people would agree that fictional literature can be split pretty easily into the two sections: Poetry and Prose.

Question of placing[edit]

I am writing a new story about an Orc who was raised by goblins, but this story doesn't fit in under any of the categories on the page... since the story takes place in High Rock... maybe anyone could read it and spead some light over the question? Anyway, thanks for reading this :) -Goblin lair 20:33, 16 May 2010

poem about Umaril[edit]

Shall I add a poem about Umaril the unfethered on Tamriel poetry or just on the Oblivion fanfiction? -Gbolin lair 11:14, 6 September 2008

Well I just place it on poetry. -Goblin lair 14:43, 6 September 2008

Agent Phintias[edit]

The link to my story, just under Oblivion Fanfiction isn't working, I want to know if I'm doing anything wrong. This is the link title (search for it; it's there): User:Ninja Hinder/Agent Phintias

I've fixed it - You've written your story at " User:Ninja Hinder/Agent Phintias:Infiltration. ", complete with the period at the end. --GuildKnightTalk2me 20:07, 23 September 2008 (EDT)

Everyone come![edit]

Ok. I am starting to write on the next part of The battle at Bruma, and I would be very happy if I could get any of your characters in each city. If you want your character in the story. add some facts about the character: his/her class/work, body (for example: long, fat, skinny and so on), age and favourite weapon. also a bit about the characters person, how it acts, what it likes and so on. And most important; in which city do the character live?

Please add the information of the characters to my "Main" talkpage. -Goblin lair 09:11, 8 november 2008

Here is a list of what cities I need characters from:

• Anvil

Bravil

Bruma

Cheydinhal

Chorrol

Imperial City

Kvarts

Leyawin

Skingrad

Needing People![edit]

Seeing goblin lair's post above, I think that would be a good idea. I would like to include some characters you can think of or from your game. Since I am done with part two, the sequel to this story. I would choose a couple of characters for a new story with the same bounty hunters. they would be:

Update: The next story is S'arad's Revenge and i'll start soon. So get your charecter into my talk page quickly. Every reasonable character will find their way into my story.

  • The new mark the team needs to hunt down (and kill, no matter what) I will choose several for this, all i'll say is that a crime syndicate will be hired. (note your person will be the 'evil' one, but will be very important in the story.)
  • And informant, like S'arad or Dha'rasha in the first story, only yours will be... well, a normal informant ;) (spoiler)
  • A new addition to the team. Thats right, a new bounty hunter.
  • Or, just anyone else making an appearence!

Message me on my talk page. --Arch-Mage Matt 23:02, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Here are some updates on who your characters could be- If it is an ally they most likely will survive if it is an enemy they most likely to die.

  • There is an elite crime syndicate spread throughout Tamriel, and the leader is a feared dunmer called Eitom. Your charecter could be Eitom's second, or a thug in the crime syndicate. (enemy, might survive)
  • I want Eitom to be a dunmer, but if your charecter is good enough they could become Eitom. (enemy)
  • A new bounty hunter that joins the team (ally)
  • Possibly some thugs working directly for S'arad, or S'arad's friends. (enemy)
  • Someone who once knew S'arad and can give information about him (ally)
  • Mage's guild members (allies)
  • Anyone else, say if you want them to be an enemy or an ally. You may see it worthless to be an enemy but they will get more attention than the allies and if I really like them I just won't have the heart to kill them off (Like S'arad)

Leave me a message on my talk page. --Arch-Mage Matt 01:37, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Lore Requirements in Fanfiction[edit]

What exactly is the standard required by us before something is deemed unworthy to go here? For example I was thinking about seriously changing the kinds of things magic can do and making new creatures and/or races. Would that be acceptable provided it's set in the same universe? What about if I wanted to have a higher level of technology? I mean if five thousand years pass it's pretty unrealistic to have people still using bows and arrows. So basically my question is: how radical a break can be made from lore before it's no longer fanfiction and is instead a story set in a somewhat similar universe?--TAOHuh? 04:00, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I don't think we've ever established any formal requirements before, but as someone who writes from time to time as well, albeit not fanfic, I'm the last to discourage anybody's creativity. For my part, I'd say that as long as it's clear that the setting derives from the Elder Scrolls universe and has at least some clearly recognizable elements of it, go nuts! Robin Hoodtalk 05:14, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Ilona the Valiant[edit]

Did anyone like it? I worked hard for it, and I though of it. :D Tell me. If I get good reports, I'll make more. Just...BE HONEST. Don't be nice, lol. Shianni 01:27, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

It was a little hard to read due to the format, you could had flushed out the characters a little more. For example her husband was in one sentence, it makes it hard to grow attached or care about a character if we have so little to base their character on. It also ignored the lore (or at least my understanding of it, I am no lore master). Historically gender rights has never been an issue with the Empire, (your story at least takes place after the rise of the Empire as there is an Imperial City) since the Empire was originally lead by Queen Alessia gender prejudices would of had never had a chance to form in the Empire. Therefore gender rights has never been a true issue for the Empire, and doesn't make since from a readers perspective. Why would a warrior have to hide her gender when gender based roles have never been apart of Imperial culture? Why would women be subservient in a society formed and originally lead by a woman? A better and more believable angle would of been that she was always looked down because of her racial identity, not her sexual one.
As it is Ilona the Valiant is roughly as good as most every fan fiction I've read. If you keep working it'll be much more enjoyable. For the record, you shouldn't let a bad or good review sway your actions when it comes to creative arts. Alpha Kenny Buddy 02:06, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
So true, I didn't know what to do with the husband, and I suspected there was never prejudice in the Empire against Women. I never read much into it, perhaps I should work on the format. It's all a little to close together, thanks. I'll update Ilona the Valiant, and get to work on new stories. Thank you. Shianni 02:55, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

'Mature' fanfic?[edit]

I'm wondering if any of my stories would be acceptable for the wiki. They're very lore-faithful (the longest one is in the classic 'tale of the Nerevarine' format, actually) and probably contain (on average) less than 5% sexual content. It's just that the sexual content is, well, very explicit. Not appropriate? :\ (I'd rather err on the side of not offending *anyone*.. hmm... sanitized version, maybe?) — Unsigned comment by 96.231.17.38 (talk) at 12:05 on April 6, 2011

It's not my personal decision, but I wouldn't want to see anything more explicit than The Real Barenziah, Part IV. rpeh •TCE 20:31, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
Personally, if you did put it on the wiki I would use a Template:Notice on the top of the page, and perhaps before the sections as well. Then, it is entirely up to choice. I believe there is a Show/Hide function as well. At Template:Showhide. --DKong27 Talk Cont 23:34, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
As long as people have the option to avoid it, it shouldn't be a problem. If we have this page (Don't read anything into this. I'm making an impartial observation, not arguing for it to be gotten rid of.) if the form we do now, then some words shouldn't be an issue.--Ghurhak gro-Demril or TAOYes? 06:42, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
The template to use is {{explicit}}. rpeh •TCE 10:12, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Section Placement[edit]

Okay, I'm starting a fanfiction that I REALLY don't know where to put here. There is a flash-forward prologue that begins in Skyrim, and will probably end with a few chapters in Skyrim. However, there will also be a few chapters that took place in Tamriel during the Oblivion Crisis (mostly flash-backs). The majority of the chapters will be a memory of going through the Shivering Isles main questline. So... what now? Shivering Isles, Oblivion, Skyrim, or does it fit in one of the sections in 'Tamriel' here??? Maybe it shouldn't be so complicated in its location, but I just had this idea and that's how I wanted it written. ;) --Vulpa 00:03, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

If it's just flash backs to those games, and maninly in Skyrim I would put it in the Skyrim section.--Skyrimplayer 00:40, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, the main character is in Skyrim, thinking about the past. Most of the time, she is remembering the Shivering Isles. So, should it go in the Shivering Isles? I'm confusing myself... |:( . --Vulpa 23:56, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
I would just put it in skyrim.If anyone objects,they'll fix it.Skyrimplayer 23:59, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
K, Thanks! --Vulpa 12:55, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Where's my fanfic?[edit]

I wrote a fanfic titled "Shades of black". After I had uploaded it I left for a mere 15 minutes and it was gone when I came back. What happened to it and why was it removed, there was nothing wrong with it. Emzi43 (talk) 12:13, 3 February 2013 (GMT)

It's still there User:Emzi43/Shades of Black. Jeancey (talk) 12:24, 3 February 2013 (GMT)
Aye but it's not in the skyrim fanfic section where I put it,I can't even see it on the page Emzi43 (talk) 12:37, 3 February 2013 (GMT)
The page hasn't been edited in days, if you submitted an edit it didn't go through. As a side note you uploaded the fanfic on three different pages, including User:Emzi43/shades of black and User:Emzi43/my fanfiction. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 12:41, 3 February 2013 (GMT)
Yeah um, as you've seen silence, my skills are very messed up and I had plenty of trouble actually getting the fanfiction on the page. All those were accidents, feel free to delete the spare 2 if it's an inconvenience Emzi43 (talk)
