did anyone else think that the ending to oblivion REALLY sucked? i mean, the storyline had me hooked, i liked the way it folded out and the twists. I like the ending to both the dark brotherhood and thieves guild quests (didn't do the mages guild or fighter). But they used oblivion gates as WALLS! i havn't seen that kind of cheapness in games for a long time, i didnt even play a part in the final battle, its ust some dude who turned into a dragon for some reason. I got the impression that they had an awesome ending planned out but got told they had 5 minutes to make up, program, and animate an ending.

You just didn't get enough of immersion. You played this like a hack&slash, not as a RPG. You didn't get to learn more about Martin, didn't talk with him at different ocasions. The ending sucked from hack&slash point of view, all the hacking and slashing was done by other, not by you. But it was great from RPG point of view. That's not some dude. That's a kid who grew up on a gods-forgotten farm without a father, fed lies while young... later tired of these lies he joined rogue conjurers, young and power-hungry, dabbling in forgiven arcane arts, playing with the daedra. He got hold of the Wabbajack for some time - read the linked book to see what this means to a person who isn't prepared for it... Then things slipped out of control, all his friends dead, he barely surviving. Left all alone in the world - no friends, mother likely dead, and just Jauffre, whom he really hated deeply for all these lies - he knows they are lies but doesn't know what is the truth. It's never said, but just implied, the tension, suspense - Martin hates Jauffre. So instead of serving the cult of Talos, at Weynon Priory, he goes to Kvatch to join the temple there, to redeem for his errors, for death of his friends. And then when the city gets burned you show up and tell him it was because of him. Nice feeling, isn't it? Travel with him on foot to Weynon Priory, and you'll see about the best fighting mage in the game - you won't see Martin fighting when he's lost in the crowd of soldiers at the gate or in Imperial City, you must observe him while travelling with him alone. Approach some oblivion gate and just watch him sweeping the floor around with the daedra. He's really good, and you just wonder what kind of accident could kill all his friends and leave him barely alive if he was that good - most likely the battle at the great gate is a child's play for him, compared to these events. But as you talk to him, he really hates this whole emperor's heir thing, he was fine being a monk, he doesn't want to be emperor. And then he again has to obey Jauffre, even if he can see the whole truth and remembers the misery of his childhood and youth, most of which he got thanks to his father and Jauffre. So in the end he just commits a suicide. Any emperor could have done this before. Instead, they kept the fragile ballance, emperor, temple, amulet, dragonfires, heirs, and anything breaks and the hell breaks loose, oblivion gates open. But the Septim Family rules the empire... Just one of them, Martin, got enough balls to break the amulet, give his life for safety of the land. He could make a pact with Mehrunes Dagon, giving him part of the power, remaining an emperor. But he hated the idea of being emperor at all cost, he hated the legacy his father gave him. Took his little revenge for living in misery as a "backup" and being given all these honors and promises when they needed him - make the empire fall apart without emperor, destroy the dynasty of Septims, break the amulet of kings - and defuse the "dead man's trigger" bomb that kept Septims ruling, the empire a necessity, the fear "overthrowing the emperor = hell breaks loose" that kept leaders of the provinces from ever rebelling.
It wasn't some dude changing into a dragon. It was a person who lived a sad life and faced a sad end to repair the errors of his fathers.

Too bad it's wrong on multiple levels. 1) He had the Sanguine Rose, not Wabbajack. 2) He never even knew who Jauffre was until you showed him to him. Let alone hate him He had just dropped him off as a baby and left. 3) It's FORBIDDEN arcane arts, not FORGIVEN. 4) He's not as badass as you like to think. (Except for the whole turning into a dragon thing.) 5) In general, you're pulling information from your own fantasy, not the game.

anyway im not going to tease thier ending without presenting an alternative, so hear goes: you take the gand sigil stone, see a screenshot of martin, only 3 or so soldiers are still in the battlefield, they fall back into bruma and the guards try to hold the gate. the big war machine thing starts to walk out the gate....then continues to walk out the gate. a daedra dude comes and talks to you, he tells you that the grand sigil stonees were only ever used to open the gate and the transendant ones from the three smaller gats anchored it there. you kill him, and find the broken amulet on his body. then realise that the mysteriam Xarches was all a ruse. you get some ammount of time to close all three smaller oblivion gates and trap the war machine on our plane so that you can find a way to destroy it without it going to other cities (which at its speed would take years). once you closes the three there is a huge battle in the ruins of bruma to destroy the machine. there are guards fighting the machine and the daedra that guard it. there are also guards fighting the mythic dawn members who keep opening portals around the city for daedra to invade through, and trying to open huge gates to get the machine back into oblivion. you have to do both, close oblivion gates and kill mythic dawn members, at the same time as killing daedra and the giant machine. once you win and the machine is destroyed the war moves to oblivion, every troop from every city is rallied up and they charge through the oblivion portals, there is a MASSIVE war. if you manage to kill all the daedra and make it to the main tower thing where the king-dude lives, most of the soldiers guard the tower to make shure no more deadra can come in, you and your soldiers charge in, kill more daedra, then fight the king dude (who is like 7 foot tall, not 70). once you kill him you go back to your lands and the daedra stop trying to invade. martin becomes emporer and rules the place.

Nope. It mostly sucks.
  1. SENSE, REASONS, CONTINUITY. Daedra dude talks to you, yeah, very likely. Sure the machine could leave the gate, would make an interesting twist. The war moving to Oblivion makes no sense Daedra are immortal, once killed they come back to life shortly. You can't win by killing them, only by sealing them off. And then you kill the king dude, not Camoran who is the original heir to the throne, overthrown by the septims, and desires the throne of the Empire even at cost of destroying the world, not Mehrunes Dagon, REAL daedric prince of Tamriel, Tamriel being another plane of Oblivion, stolen by betrayal by Akatosh from Mehrunes Dagon. Just some king dude. And of course since no dragonfires are ever lit, the gates will continue opening forever, faster than anyone could close them, till everyone is killed, Daedra reborn, respawning, just return faster than you could kill them. Sure. That would make a great hack&slash game. Lots and lots of fighting. Not an RPG.
  2. TECHNICAL POSSIBLITY. With more than 6 NPC on screen the game slows down to a crawl on GForce6600. You must watch the other direction than the main battle during the battle for Bruma, because simply the framerate drops too much to be playable. Just try to imagine the massive battle in Bruma on nowadays hardware, or any massive war for that matter. XBox360 is not a silver bullet. Its power is limited too. Why do you think Burz takes only two other guards with you to Oblivion? Because with 5 guards fighting 4 daedra lit from 4 light sources at once you'd just find it impossible to play due to framerate drop.
  3. BORING. Camoran Paradise goes bye-bye, but you get more gates to close. You get second battle for Kvatch, just this time for Bruma. Just enter one more gate and kill the king dude. Honestly, how many more gates do I have to close according to you? One-two gates at each city in "aid for Bruma" quest was more than I wanted.
Honestly I'm tired of the kids who don't know what RPG means. Listen to people telling their stories. Read some in-game books. Learn the history of Ayleids, Akavir, the Empire, multiple relligions, variety of habits of provinces. And if you don't understand why a guy changes into a dragon, you just skipped too much and the game will suck for you. Just the same as if you watched a movie by pressing "fast forward" whenever people start talking. --Vook 06:13, 15 May 2006 (EDT)
So? I've read all the books here on the wiki, doesn't make the ending less mediocre.
I would like to say that Tamriel does NOT belong to Mehrunes Dagon, Oblivion does. Just because Mankar Camoran says that it is a plane of Oblivion does not make it so. His speech about Tamriel being a plane of Oblivion is under serious questioning after he stated that Coldharbor belonged to Meridia, even though multiple other sources said that it belonged to Molag Bal.

I thought the ending was great too, but you have to admit, for a moment there, you couldn't helping thinking "Cool! Godzilla."

At the unsigned comment above, I would like to clarify that Oblivion does not belong to Mehrunes Dagon, only a plane of Oblivion. It is assumed that him saying Coldharbor belonging to Meridia is just a minor grammar error either by the people who wrote it or by Mankar himself (Seeing as you were coming to kill him, and he WOULD try to stop or hinder you by any means possible). At the unsigned comment above that, when he said "Read all the books", he was refering to learning about the country and the world to become immersed in it, rather than just cutting through the entire game and not worrying about the story. The game, among other things, is designed for the storyline, not to just run around killing things for no apparent reason. The fact that you can do this is to expand the game to a wider audience. Wabbajack

I've moved this note from the main page:

It is possible to Wabbajack Mehrunes Dagon, but you will still see his body after you Wabbajack him. When you kill him he will turn into a reddish pile of mud, as below. If he turns into a rat other daedra will attack him.

But according to the Wabbajack page, Dagon is immune to wabbajacking. And in the construction set, the script explicitly checks whether it's being used on Mehrunes Dagon (GetSelf != CreatureMehrunesDagon) and skips the entire script for Dagon, just like it does for NPCs. So there seems to be a discrepancy here. Any chance this was while running a mod? Or can anyone else confirm this? --Nephele 23:27, 12 January 2007 (EST)

According to the Unofficial Patch notes:
Wabbajack will no longer "kill" Mehrunes Dagon (as was intended, but the scripting to prevent this didn't work)
So Wabbajack wasn't meant to work on Dagon, but it did anyway due to yet another bug.--66.23.133.52 23:03, 19 February 2007 (EST)

The Future of Tamriel?

I am curious to know what happens to the empire after this quest, since the only heir to the throne is a stone statue. I can only guess that Ocato continues to rule the place. Or do you get privileges now you're the Champion of Cyrodiil? --Saint 14:33, 11 February 2007 (EST)

Those last two gates at the end

Has anybody gone through and closed those two Oblivion Gates that open by the Temple at the very end? I just wondered if that was possible and if anybody had done it and if it had any effect on anything. =) 152.23.196.162 08:44, 18 February 2007 (EST)

Main Quest beginning to end in minutes

I'm not sure where this belongs, but it must deserve mention somewhere:

If you can't view YouTube: you can use paintbrushes to jump through the roof of the Temple of the One and access the half-buried door to the endgame version of the temple. Wait a few hours and Martin will show up, ready to do his thing. I haven't tried this myself (running the unofficial patch, so my brushes don't hover, but Fortify Acrobatics might work), so I don't know in what state it leaves the game world, but it should at least get you the Imperial Dragon armor and the functional Akatosh Shrine. --66.23.133.52 21:30, 5 March 2007 (EST)

No it doesnt work like that at all once you jump through the roof 250+ acrobatic style you have to go through a very small door on the floor which takes you to the point where the gates are open all around the temple distric and Dagon is standing outside. You wait 24 hours and martin apear and after talking to him the whole akotash vs dagon happens followed by the cutscene of all the gates closing. Ocato is not even present to talk to you so no getting rank champion of cyrodail or imperial dragon armor and the statue of akatosh is only there untill you leave the temple destrict and then it is restored in to the original. So the glitch is extremly pointless other than the fact that you can make a stupid youtube video saying I beat the game in 2 minutes lol hope that helped!

Actually you can get the rank Champion of Cyrodiil by glitching the game. I just decided to try to glitch to the ending and I ended up getting the achievement for it on the 360. So this way does in fact work.

why did they put the door in there? just curious... i think maybe they did it like they did Toddtest in morrowind for a testing cell so they could beat the game quickly maybe? and forgot to remove it or expected no one to find it?

Street disappears

When I finish the main quest, the street outside the Temple has disappeared (I understand that it's supposed to be a broken up version of the 'regular' floor) and I and all NPC's walk around on the lumpy ground. The temple floats in the air, as do the walls and gates.

I can't find anything about this, and none of the unofficial patches fix this either. Has anyone else experienced/fixed this? 82.95.254.30 11:33, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

Hmmm... That is an odd glitch. My first guess would be that the street model/texture is missing from your Oblivion Installation, but that would usually cause an error when you loaded the cell (I think). You're on the PC right? --Ratwar 13:13, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
Yep, PC version. I have the 1.2 patch and the unofficial 2.0 patch. I googled the issue, but found just one other guy mentioning it in a comment on the unofficial patch. No solution presented. Is there any way I can check if the mesh and texture are actually there? Perhaps with the construction kit? (Never used it before, so I have no idea.) 82.95.254.30 16:29, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
I installed the Construction Set, and looked through the MQ16 scripts to see if I could see any lines that altered the floor mesh to the busted and broken one. I figured I might try running that command in the console and see if the floor appears, but no luck. Anyone know more about what to look for in the CS? 82.95.254.30 19:06, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
It doesn't alter individual items like the floor mesh, it just loads a completely different version of the entire area. So it loads world "ICTempleDistrictMQ16" instead of world "ICTempleDistrict". You could try pulling up that world in the construction set, see whether it looks normal, and see if you can figure out what it's trying to load for the floor. --Nephele 20:40, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

Yep, you're right, after the battle is over it gets set back to the original "ICTempleDistrict". The commands that get run at the same time as part of setting up the modified Temple District are all at the end of MQ16Script. The ones that I can see that seem to be related to the Temple District are:
  • MQ16PathgridRock.activate MQ16PathgridRock
  • MQ16AkatoshStatueRef.enable
  • MQ16PathgridRock.disablelinkedpathpoints
The middle one obviously is the one that makes the new statue appear. The first and third ones might be related to what you're seeing, but I don't have a clue what they really do. --Nephele 23:56, 30 March 2007 (EDT)
Hmm, thanks for the info. I guess I need to figure out what MQ16PathgridRock is. Is there any place in the construction set where I can view the floor the way it should be after the main quest? Maybe I can find some sort of reference to it. All I can find is ICTempleDistrict, but that has the normal floor. Gates?

Few last questions before I delete about 10 saves from before I finished the main quest:

  1. When it says the gates stop opening, does that just mean that the crisis is thwarted?
  2. Do random gates continue to open?
  3. Do gates that are already open stay open until closed by myself?
  4. Do all Oblivion Gates just disappear, period?
  5. Is completing the game at level 5 (my current level) not good since I only closed the required gates to be closed, and the sigil stones aren't as good as the can be? --WerdnanoslenTalk 10:24, 28 April 2007 (EDT)

Sorry it took so long for someone to answers your questions on the 'Light the Dragonsfires' talkpage.
  1. Yes the crisis is thwarted.
  2. No more random gates appear.
  3. Every single gate is shut, so if you want to get more sigil stones are other stuff only found in the gates don't do this quest.
  4. No, they are just shut, the frame of the gate is still there, as well as the map markers (so you can fast travel).
  5. I'd wait a bit since the best sigil stones (and all other loot) are only available at around lvl 20.

Martin Left Behind?

When I was doing this quest, I accidentally went to the Temple District too quickly, and Martin and the other guards stayed by the palace. When I tried to go back to get them, the game wouldn't let me, saying that I must get Martin to the Temple of the One. I fought the various Daedra coming in as long as I could hoping Martin would come through the door, but he didn't. What I ended up doing is going to the Temple of the One by myself, and waiting for an hour. Martin got there over the wait. Did this happen to anyone else? Is this a bug, or at the least a note that you shouldn't go run too quickly, that should be added to the article? Jason the2nd 12:34, 17 June 2007 (EDT) Insert non-formatted text here

Imperial Palace Cuirass

i read somewhere on this wiki that you can get the palace cuirass from the already dead guards outside the palace, but there is no cuirass there, just some clothing. is the cuirass only on the pc version or something? — Unsigned comment by 71.222.253.166 (talk)

Dagon's 'death'

If you aren't using the console or mods, can you still achieve the 'turning Dagon into red mud effect'?

You can, you just have to either A. use wabbajack or B. throw stupid amount of spells at dagon.

You can also use Damage Fatigue or Absorb Fatigue Spells or a weapon enchanted with them and when his fatigue is depleted, he will collapse.

Where is Martin?

I left Martin at Cloud Ruler after starting Light the Dragonfires. I did a bunch of other quests. When I made it my active quest again, the arrow goes to Chancellor Ocato and I talk to him. He says "Where is Martin, I was told he entered the capital". He's not at Cloud Ruler or the Temple. — Unsigned comment by 72.91.86.201 (talk)

Once you start this quest (and until he reaches the Imperial Palace) Martin's instructions are to follow your character. So he's been trying to follow you back and forth across Tamriel, although if he is slower than you (i.e., if he's not riding a horse) he may not actually be able to catch up with you. Luckily, he is an essential NPC at this point, so he won't get himself killed in the process. Your best bet is to just stay fixed in one location (i.e., in the Imperial Palace) for a while and give Martin a chance to catch up with you. --NepheleTalk 12:09, 7 October 2007 (EDT)
please i need help! I'm on the light the dragonfires mission. Two Avatar of Akatosh Statues

In this article it says "To reach it, find the window with the lowest height needed to jump over it, boost your Acrobatics to the ~250 range (possible without cheating with custom spells), and jump from the sill." I was able to, with 89 acrobatics, jump onto the sill by his tail, then jump up and activate his tail for the bonus, without ever leaving the outside of the temple. I'm running too many mods to tell if this is standard in game or due to a mod. If someone modless could confirm this works, it can be added in place of the current text.

Easy Ending

I don't know for a fact if this will work for other people but it is worth a shot. After clearing out the palace district, have Martin "Wait" for you at the door towards the temple district while still in the palace district. You can now cross over and see all the chaos taking place. You don't need to explore very far.

At any rate a quest trigger should come up after speaking to Orzo saying you need to speak with Martin about the temple after exploring around a little bit. Lo and behold return to Martin who gives you the quest update to need to be at the temple.

If you tell Martin to follow you, he says he will, but he will not. This stops the big bad guy from appearing and attacking the town, letting you run past a handfull of daedric enemies right into the temple. Now because Martin's character is set on "follow" he will teleport to the temple beside you yet does not teleport to the plaza district for some reason.

Anather easy ending, if you have the SI mod, is to use Sheogorath's Staff on Dagon, which will freeze him like any other enemies. It is then a simple matter of making Martin walk around the daedra. Where is Martin? Dragonfires Quest

I am having the same problem as another person here had. I went off after the Paradise quest, telling Martin to stay at Cloud Ruler Temple, to sell the loot I gathered since I was nearly at full encumbrance. When I returned he was gone.

I activate the quest and go to the Imperial City. The green flag takes me to the Chancellor who asks where Martin is. Everybody says "they're expecting me" but I can't find Martin anywhere.

I found the same problem here and tried this approach. I've sat at the Council entrance for two days now and Martin does not appear. He should have been able to walk here from the furthest reaches of the empire by now.

I'm confused...where did he go and where is he?

Martin is at Cloud Ruler Temple hidden to the left of the Temple in the stables. Remember, though Martin can perish in the Dragonfire Quest, you can leave Cloud Ruler after completing "Paradise" with Martin following you, and he will assist you, and never die, in any quest anywhere...He is a tremedously powerful ally. 71.255.111.26 02:23, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Command Creature spells work on Dagon?

Works if you stack mondo Command Creature spells on him (REMEMBER to put them on TARGET not TOUCH. Touch spells dont seem to be as effective on Dagon, mostly because they require you to commit suicide by standing too close to him), but it isnt very useful as all he does is attack daedra instead. While thats helpful if you're aiming to kill all the daedra before entering the temple, if you just plan on running past him it doesnt do much as the ending will, of course, still happen the same way. — Unsigned comment by 129.71.16.237 (talk)

Jauffre and Baurus attacking Ocato

After Martin finishes his fight with Mehrunes Dagon, Baurus, Jauffre, and Ocato show up, Jauffre withdraws his blade and starts attacking ocato, I tried knocking out Ocato and let him get back up but Jauffre keeps attacking him, anyway out of this? I want Jauffre and Baurus alive and I already have them alive at that part.

You could try casting a Calm spell on the pair of them, or using Command Humanoid to lead one Jauffre away. I imagine one hit the other during the battle, causing the enmity now everything is over. –RpehTCE 03:23, 24 June 2008 (EDT)
When I played, I was clearing out a fort with Martin and Jauffre, and i guess Martin accidentally hit Jauffre one to many times. Jauffre and Martin started fighting and wouldn't stop. "Protect the heir at all costs" my ass.... I had to load my game -Random User :)

I had this exact same problem. the thing to do is knock out ocato and then immediatly leave the temple. when out ocato should also leave. you can then talk to him about your reward. ;)

Killing Guards

Due to my tendencies to massacre the innocent in this game, wondering if i have killed guards in the templ district, will i have less men fighting with me? or do the guards spawn just for this mission? The guards spawned during this quest are not the normal guards. So they will still all appear. Normal guards respawn after a few days though. --Timenn < talk > 09:48, 3 October 2008 (EDT)

Weather after main quest

For some reason it seems that, now two weeks after I've completed the main quest (again, must be the seventh time or so =), the weather around the Imperial City stays 'clear'. It's Hearthfire now, and I'm counting on seeing a fair amount of rain. Is there anything about the main quest code that causes the weather to clear up? -- 193.141.12.236 00:55, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

In the immediate aftermath of the battle with Dagon the weather is set to clear but that should clear up after a little while. If you wait for a while in the city you should see the weather change. –RpehTCE 01:12, 24 October 2008 (EDT)

Another thing about the weather in IC that I noticed is that if you go into the Temple Of The One, after the main quest the the weather will automatically turn 'sunny' when you come out, because the 'new inside' of the temple shows an always sunny sky.--LuciusZelgius 23:15, 19 November 2008 (EST)

iron dagger?

On my game and three others martin was equipped with an enchanted silver longsword during "Light The Dragonfires" most likely the same sword he had from "Defense Of Bruma", the only time I can remember him having an enchanted iron dagger is during "Weynon Priory". But the notes say he is equipped with one during "Light The Dragonfires" but it may be just the XBox games becuase those are the only ones I've played.--LuciusZelgius 23:08, 19 November 2008 (EST)

Same on the PC. The article notes are wrong, though I expect they might be correct if you did the quest at such an extremely low level that enchanted silver weapons didn't exist. - Ali

Issue with the 2 Statues of Akotash

A while ago (about 7 months after the game came out) I decided to try to activate the second Statue of Akotash using a painbrush ladder trick. And I used it, but a serious issue occured with my character. After I used the statue to get it's blessing, I found that every spell I cast had an incredibly slow visual effect. So I fireball that would usualy disappear in a split second remained there for several minutes! The effect of the fireball still had it's normal timer, but the viual effect was broken. This was the same for nearly every spell I tried, including healing spells, however the effects for "Open spells" are normal. At the time when I asked around (I didn't know about this site) I found there was nothing I could do, I was on a 360, and reloading old saves or clearing the cache didn't help. I just wanted to know if what happened to my character is connected with the statue. Right now I have a new character (on the same account) and his magic works fine. --Zirakseez 18:50, 17 December 2008 (EST)

Telling Martin to Wait

Martin was told to wait, went to Skingrad then went back to Cloud Ruler and couldn't find him. Went to Council chambers, Baurus was patrolling outside, Entered and spoke to Ocato who says that He heard Martin was in the Imperial city and was waiting for him. Used the command prompt (player.moveto 1e745) and was taken to Martin at Cloud Ruler Temple. He was outside the building in a stone room on the right, on horseback, waiting with Jaffre. Spoke to him, chose follow me and the game progressed normally from there. I agree, since the entry was not specific in which circumstances it can occur it is likely the author made a wrong assumption. Doing an action that an NPC can consider as hostile is not necessarily limited to physical attacks. --Timenn-<talk> 11:10, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Moved Bug

If you managed to keep Jauffre and Baurus alive once you've completed the quest and finished the talk with Ocato they will attack each other.

I moved this bug because it seems rather outlandish that is hasn't been confirmed. They get attacked, but perhaps it is just a side effect of them accidently hitting each other in the process of defending themselves. If this can be confirmed, do so here.
