Thanks[edit]

For the edit at the stats page. I wanted to do it myself, but I am not skilled with tables. I tried it and I failed. Thanks again. --Rigas Papadopoulos • TalkDeeds 20:32, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

WikiGnome[edit]

Robin, you aren't a WikiGnome, lol. WikiGnomes are smaller members of a Wiki who work in shadows, correcting pages without recognition, praise, or promotions in the Wikipedia. Are you telling me that your work has not gone unnoticed? :P I'm not being mean, it's just...it's not true, lol. You're much more of a WikiElf/Fairy. You do everything publicly, and you defend yourself when attacked. And you're a WikiFairy because of your love an many, MANY templates, and Sandboxes. You're very successful, but you shouldn't say that. Lol. I'm a WikiElf myself. I do everything for recognition of my potential. (: Keep up the good work! Shianni 16:13, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Hahaha...thank you! I'm not saying I don't appreciate the recognition, but honestly, my main drive is doing the small improvements that add polish to the wiki. Call it OCD if you want, but I like bringing consistency to articles and templates. As for going unnoticed, in the words of WP, "Many highly active wiki contributors exhibit WikiGnome-like behavior as part of their work...." I think that describes the bulk of what I do. I suppose the template work has some Fairy attributes to it, but I don't consider myself to have a good sense of layout and the like...quite the opposite, in fact. I suppose the "clearing up confusing footnotes or references, standardizing format, or by organizing images for balance" could apply, though it's certainly not the bulk of what I do. But terminology debates aside, thanks for the encouragement! Robin Hoodtalk

Parentheses and Punctuation[edit]

This is an excuse to talk to you, rather than a real issue. I have noticed this minor edit and I wonder if the rule for quotation marks does not apply for parentheses aswel? --Wizy (Talk/Contribs) 10:28, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Hahaha...I like your "excuse to talk to you". Parentheses work more or less the same as logical quotation, yes. The rule-of-thumb I was always taught is: if you remove the entire parenthetical text, all punctuation should still make sense with what's left (give or take spacing). Similarly, anything inside the parentheses should be punctuated correctly if you just remove the parentheses and not the text. The rules cited by Wikipedia go into much more deeply. Robin Hoodtalk 10:42, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
Hmm That rule makes sense and the wikipedia link clarified other questions I had. gc. (good conversation [instead of "gg" {good game}]) --Wizy (Talk/Contribs) 11:08, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

A very serious - but non-existent - bug?[edit]

Hey RH! I’m trying to get all our facts straight when it comes to the quest related to the Temple of the Moth. However, nearly all related pages mention an apparently very serious bug (examples here, here and even here) – problem is, I can’t trigger the bug no matter how hard I try (PS3) – and neither can Emoboy64 who tried to trigger it on Xbox. Do you know anything about this bug? Is it possible it is PC only? If so, we have a lot of pages to correct. For additional info, see the last posts of this discussion. I really hope you can provide some help or insight into the mechanics triggering this bug, so I can test it once again – and hopefully (and I have a feeling you have installed OB by now) you are willing to test it on PC. Thank you so much in advance. --Krusty 11:09, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

PC, no UOP, lvl 1. I just went through the whole place and no quest update. Could it be possible that one of the official patches fixed this? --Wizy (Talk/Contribs) 15:21, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for testing this oddity, Wizy. I'm not sure if it is supposed to provide a "real" update, but one of the pages state the Methredhel will start the quest if you talk to her after that - I think all of this is weird; looking at the UOP page, it states that the bug exist and we use a lot of space warning against it, yet we are not sure how to trigger it! :D --Krusty 15:53, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm just about to test it, but at first blush, it looks like you need to activate the door at D(Z3) on this map, then talk with Methredhel and click on "What is the message?". Is that what you did? Robin Hoodtalk 18:36, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, just jumping around, I was able to replicate it. I was wrong about needing to ask Methredhel about the topic...she brings it up as soon as you talk to her. It could be that something else plays into this, but at least on preliminary testing, the bug occurs. It looks like earlier Thieves Guild quests could take priority, though, if you haven't completed them. There might be other possibilities as well—I'm a little rusty on prioritization of the various dialogues. If you try the above and don't get "I've been looking for you!" as the first thing out of her mouth, let me know what you do get and we'll go from there. Robin Hoodtalk 18:54, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Ironically, I managed to trigger the bug as well just now - it does not provide an update inside the Temple and you will have to speak to Meth when she is NOT waiting behind Dareloth's House in the evening (I tried before joining the TG), then she will give you the "I have an important message"-thing and start the quest. One question arise though; I noticed that Meth wouldn't give me the quest once the May the Best Thief Win quest was started - but will she continue to hand you the quest at all other times during the TG quest line? EDIT: Yes she will; just finished Let the Best Thief Win and Meth would give me the Turning a Blind Eye quest as soon as she went back to her normal life. --Krusty 19:17, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I missed the Methredhel part, after talking to her you can meet the Gray Fox in Bruma, he only says "Don't you have something to do?". The player is not added to the thieves guild faction so far. --Wizy (Talk/Contribs) 19:31, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) from Wizy's EC...gah! :) If I'm reading the dialogues correctly, then if you've started May the Best Thief Win (even just by talking to Armand outside Dareloth), The Elven Maiden, or Misdirection, then those should take priority; otherwise, she should skip to Turning a Blind Eye. There may also be specific quest stages within those at which Methredhel will skip to Turning a Blind Eye - I didn't check that every last stage was covered by the conditions. Robin Hoodtalk 19:36, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I received the full speech from the Gray Fox and another quest update. A really big bug, actually. Of course, I joined the Guild when I won the race. Your test sounds interesting, though - maybe not that big of a bug if you are NOT in the TG Faction? --Krusty 19:40, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

() Sorry, I'm working on 3.5 hours sleep and not processing much of anything very well. Is there something more I need to check here? Robin Hoodtalk 22:03, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Well, not really. I think the bug is over-covered on the wiki as of now and I'm thinking of ways to keep the info on one page and simply link to that description from all other pages. A bit of input perhaps? On which page should the detailed bug description be? --Krusty 22:10, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
I would tend to think it would be best on Temple of the Ancestor Moths, then link to it from the relevant quests. I'm not overly picky, though. Robin Hoodtalk 21:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
I think you are right - the bug is quite serious and since it is caused by entering the place, it should go there. As of now, I think I have tweaked the bug description and removed the rambling mentioned elsewhere on the page (like which key to use if you want to trigger the bug). I'll take a look on the other pages, just to see how redundant we are. :) --Krusty 06:10, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Feather?[edit]

Just wanted to remind you about the Feather Disease thing - did you ever figure out whether or not it worked to add it at the start of the game?--Ghurhak gro-Demril or TAOYes? 07:21, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

See my response on the Feather talk page. I think that shows that the bug still comes into play, but let me know if you can think of anything else I might want to try. Robin Hoodtalk 00:03, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Catpagetemplate[edit]

I was wanting to run a catpagetemplate on the NPC by Level categories, and this is what I managed to come up with:

<catpagetemplate>{{#define:catgroup|{{#switch:{{#sub:{{{sortkey}}}|0|2}}|00=0|01=10|02=20|03=30|04=40|05=50|06=60|...}}}}</catpagetemplate>

Now, I haven't familiarized myself with this tag extension, but this one works. I was wanting to know if there is a way to simplify what I am going for. Thanks. elliot (talk) 00:46, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

The only other way that occurs to me offhand is to use an expression (this'll work...there's probably one or two others that would as well):
<catpagetemplate>{{#define:catgroup|{{#expr:{{#sub:{{{sortkey}}}|0|2}} * 10}}}}</catpagetemplate>
As long as there's no desire to customize any of the group names, that'll work. If there is, your way is probably the best choice. Robin Hoodtalk 01:36, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
I went ahead and used yours for Skyrim and mine for Oblivion and Morrowind. I still don't know if a Level 100 NPC exists in Skyrim for sure, but it works for now. Thanks. elliot (talk) 01:44, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Robin Hoodtalk 01:46, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Updated Userboxes for Skyrim[edit]

I searched around and thought maybe you would be a person "in the know." Is anyone working on userboxes for Skyrim? I was surprised that I couldn't find any. The race pictures really need to be updated, they look ridiculous! Seems like that would be easy to do (but I play on an XBox, and my Adobe Photoshop is too old for 64bit, plus I don't know the rules - maybe they are not supposed to be changed once created). The faction/accomplishments don't seem to be updated for Skyrim. It's hard to tell what information is just missing from the wiki and what information "isn't there for a reason." Perhaps the factions do not have ranks anymore; I've not played enough to know. Or is someone working on them? Is there a way to encourage someone to work on them (such as a chatroom, voting system, or suggestions page)? It's obviously not urgent, but I thought maybe I had failed to find where they were. Any info or a push in the right direction is appreciated. Feel free to ignore me if I'm asking stupid questions or misusing the talk page. -Hope you're feeling better, --Amsuko 03:42, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Amusko. Actually, in a way you picked exactly the wrong person to ask. While I did a lot of work on our userboxes a while back, I only returned to the site about a week ago after a lengthy hiatus. Plus, I don't have Skyrim yet. You might want to try posting this to the Project:Community Portal and see if someone there wants to take up the project. We've got a lot of really good templaters on the site, but many of them are also Patrollers, and with the enormous amount of edits going on these days, we're mostly preoccupied with that. There are a couple who aren't Patrollers, though, so maybe one of them will be able to help. If not, try me again in about a month and we'll see if things have calmed down a bit.
