Lore:Coffee

The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
"Tea can be a stimulant, of course. But I find the buzz you experience with a nice Aetherial or Spiceberry quite pleasant. Whereas coffee is like a million gnats dancing within your mind. No thank you."
Azandar al-Cybiades[1]
Taneth Coffee

Coffee is a stimulant typically drunken as a beverage for the purpose of keeping oneself awake.[1][2] It is made from dark brown seeds called coffee beans,[3][4] found in the fruit of the coffee plant. Some may drink their coffee with cream.[5] Similar beverages include tea and kaveh.[1][6] In cooking, coffee infusions can sometimes enhance the taste of the dish.[3]

Areas that grow and ship coffee include Elsweyr and Valenwood.[7][3]

Coffee is poisonous to bears, who sometimes eat it if they find it.[3] Nixads detest the bitter scent of coffee, and as such some traders may carry it with their shipments to drive nixads away.[8]

Culture and Uses[edit]

During the New Life Festival, the Bosmer enjoy a sticky seasonal dessert called Jagga-Drenched "Mud Balls", made with bone flour, cheese, and senche-passed coffee beans.[4]

The Coffee Scorpion of Rihad is named in homage to the city's kaveh, which is considered strong, dark, and sweet.[6]

The Baandari Khajiit of Elsweyr have used sand baths to make tea and coffee since the late First Era.[7]

Notes[edit]

  • Those who dislike coffee may refer to it as "beanwater" or "bean stink", finding it overstimulating compared to tea, and unfavorably compare its taste to the brine of Apocrypha and its smell to the stench of the Deadlands.[1]
  • Lyg is described a backwards version of Tamriel, akin to a coffee-stain, in a parallel dimension that is simultaneously on the opposite side of Nirn.[UOL 1] A similar description of spilled coffee is also mentioned in relation to the Staff of Chaos.[UOL 2]
