Welcome[edit]

Hello Chris3145! Welcome to the wiki. I hope you enjoy using the site and find the information on it useful. If you decide you want to help improve any of our pages, we're always welcoming to new editors so feel free. You might want to look at our Getting Started page for some tips on how to begin, then play in our Sandbox for a while to practice. If you need any help or advice, please ask one of our mentors. Enjoy! --- Game LordTalk|Contribs 05:22, 23 April 2008 (EDT)

Advice[edit]

Hello and welcome to UESPWiki! Thanks for your interest in the wiki; however, you seem to have been making multiple edits to a page by not using the show preview button, clogging up the Recent Changes in the process. We appreciate your enthusiasm, but keep in mind that each edit needs to be patrolled, so multiple consecutive edits create an unnecessary hassle on those who patrol. So please utilize this feature! You may also want to look over our style guide and Getting Started guide. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 07:05, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Template[edit]

With each edit you make, your template just keeps getting closer and closer to mine. I am going to go ahead and implement mine, since it does have the standards of the site. If you want something else added to it, please test it out in a sandbox. Thanks. elliot (talk) 09:18, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Except mine has content for each level. Stomping out everything I've spent the last several hours doing is a real dick move. I'm more concerned with getting the individual pages made, and I was hoping the community could discuss the different templates. I even created a section for it on the talk page. Chris3145 09:23, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
I can make templates and have been doing it for years. Each edit you make is just a copy of one I made before. Nothing against you. Also, I can make an additional parameter for your "content", but it's not important that it is in the table right now. It will be here soon. Don't worry. elliot (talk) 09:26, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
That parameter is the whole goddamn reason for the separate pages. Stop it. Just let me have this one. Make another template for something else. Chris3145 09:27, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
You do not own the wiki. This template is not yours. As every single edit page states, If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly, then don't submit it here. My version uses the standards that is expected of this wiki. Your version is simple and won't handle what it needs. Stop. elliot (talk) 09:36, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

() And if you would have chilled out for a second, you would have realized I added what you wanted. All you have to use are the effect1, effect2, and effect3 parameters. elliot (talk) 09:47, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

I don't see it. I'm looking at Skyrim:Aura_Whisper, and it's not there. Is there a reason we can't use my template? Why do you have every right to delete everything I've done to replace it with your template that doesn't work as well?Chris3145 09:49, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
It works. You don't see it because it's not in use (part of my "inferior" template tricks). Check SR:Call of Valor. elliot (talk) 09:52, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes, you've been linking to multiple template sources for a while now. Go ahead and put it on all the pages properly, and then go jump in front of a bus. Chris3145 09:54, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Shout Template and Edit warring[edit]

Please stop re-posting your message on Elliot's talk page. He has a right to remove messages if he wants. Please can you post your comments on the template's talk page so other editors can contribute to the discussion. There's enough to do on the site at the moment without having to clean up after an edit war. Thanks. rpeh •TCE 10:02, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Elliot is deleting work without allowing time for a discussion on the talk page. In fact, the points made on the discussion page have said that my template was preferred, but good luck getting him to listen to anything but his own ego.Chris3145 10:04, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
If you don't stop with the personal attacks, I will block you myself. Consider this your last warning in that regards. elliot (talk) 10:07, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
If I dare to say that I think you're arrogant, you'll ban me. However, your incessant deletion of my work, even when your replacement is unfinished, is laudable. Chris3145 10:10, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) If you block an editor with whom you are in conflict, I'll remove your blocker rights on the spot.
Chris, I also posted on Elliot's talk page. You both need to go to the talk page and discuss the problem. It should be clear by now that edit warring isn't going to solve the problem. Both of you, please don't make any further changes to the template for now, and don't use it on any pages. Let's talk about this and work out how to proceed. rpeh •TCE 10:11, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Is he actually going to discuss? I created a discussion, posted my idea and his for people to compare, and all that got me was him deleting my work to replace it with his unfinished one. I've been trying to get there to be a discussion since I made the template. If he's willing to have one now, I would love to. Chris3145 10:13, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

() Would you just stop for a second? You say you want discussion, then continue on with this behavior. elliot (talk) 10:17, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Read the comment above from rpeh. I think the best course of action is to set up some mock pages (maybe for Aura Whisper, Call Dragon, and Call of Valor) and let the community decide how the template should look. Chris3145 10:19, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
That's probably the best solution. Please can both of you put your preferred template in a sandbox and do a mockup in another sandbox. Then we can see which version is better. rpeh •TCE 10:22, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Rpeh, you know which one is better. But I have already put mine in sandboxes, which I did initially. elliot (talk) 10:23, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Show Preview[edit]

I just had to go patrol all the edits you did in your sandboxes. While I appreciate your willingness to contribute, keep in mind that all your edits have to be patrolled. For that reason, I suggest you use the Show Preview button instead of doing many minor edits, so us patrollers/userspace patrollers will have an easier time patrolling them. --Rigas • TalkDeeds 11:21, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about that. Some things were template changes and wouldn't work unless I clicked save, and I also kept thinking of new ideas right after I made changes. I promise that I also clicked the show preview button numerous times between all those edits. Chris3145 11:25, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Shout Summary[edit]

2 Quick Questions - 1. On this page (and maybe others) your using the template from your Userspace not template space. I don't know if this is intentional or not, thought i'd point it out. 2. Do you want Kyne's Peace creating? Questions over :) --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 21:00, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

1. Those are some copy errors from building it in my namespace first. I'll get those fixed.
2. Yes please. Chris3145 21:01, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Just wondering whether it wanted switching over or not, but I didn't want to touch it :)
And done --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 21:04, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! Chris3145 21:08, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Shout Template Modifications[edit]

Would you mind taking a look at a couple of shout templates I've modified? The first started with yours; the second started with Elliot's. The one on the bottom is the current template. I like the first one the best; it's one row taller for shouts that only have a single line effect, but is more concise for any shouts that have multiple line effects (such as Aura Whisper). It reserves a majority of the template area for the dragon shout effect and cooldown, which is likely what people most want to know about. In comparison, you'll note that the modified Elliot template, while taking up less room, only really reports the cooldown; a lot of space seems wasted. The current template also has quite a bit of space wasted by repeated headers. If only I could figure out how to remove the border line between the dragon word and the translation, then the first one would be about as good as I could make it. --Fluff 08:36, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Got it. I actually spent forever making one with tables inside tables because I couldn't figure out how to change font sizes inside the cell, then when I went to explain that it would be easier if there were some sort of <small font> HTML tag, the small font tag worked! So it uses that. Your improvement looks better than my original template; I'll go ahead and implement it now.
I have a question about some of the wiki formatting. What do the ucfirst and lc bits do? Chris3145 18:12, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
lc{{}} and ucfirst{{}} are formatting parser functions for templates. lc{{}} makes the string lowercase. ucfirst{{}} makes the first letter of the string uppercase. You can read more about them here. It's a good idea to clean up input into the template in this way. --Fluff 18:18, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
It seems I messed up the vertical alignment in the cells containing the words. I don't have a chance to figure out how to fix it right now, but even with that issue it's still an improvement over the original. Chris3145 18:23, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

Data for Shout pages[edit]

I forgot to mention that I dumped out some extra information about dragon shouts into my sandbox, at User:Nephele/Sandbox/7. It's just some output that I already had, so it's not really properly formatted, but it does contain some of the extra details such as durations/ranges that can be added to dragon shouts now that they have separate pages. Note that the some of the interesting information is still hidden one layer deeper -- for example, there are three different effects named Animal Allegiance ("Animal Allegiance 1", "Animal Allegiance 2", "Animal Allegiance 3"), and some of the differences between the three shouts is probably caused by differences between what each of those effects do. In any case, if any of the information looks useful, feel free to use it. --NepheleTalk 01:36, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

#Defines[edit]

Just patrolled an edit to the Shout Summary, sort of stating you didn't know much about them, I have a vague knowledge and i'm around. So, questions?

A lot of templates (like Ingredient Summary) have code that saves values so they can be transcluded on other pages. A change made to the template on an ingredient's page will automatically show up on other pages. I thought about putting that sort of thing on the shout summary template, hoping to figure it out as I go, but I'm not even sure where to start. I don't see how it knows which input gets saved as which variable. I thought it might just go in order, but how does that work on a template with optional parameters? Chris3145 20:19, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I think it would got by name, but the Ingredient one knows which parameters it wants, and what to display for each possible return (color's, additional text, icons etc.) I'll have a nose, what would you use it for? A transclude over to Dragon Shouts to fill the table in neatly? --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 20:21, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
That's what I was thinking, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few other uses were discovered as well. If the template is implemented that way, then would we also want the dragon image characters to be defined in the template, that way nothing is defined on the main shouts page? The images could be defined in the template without necessarily being shown.
I'm also playing around with a few basic transclusion bits in my sandbox. The NPC summary and ingredient summary have complicated code because they have to set custom colors and take into account what namespace this is in, but the shout template doesn't have a lot of those complications, so this may actually be relatively easy.Chris3145 20:26, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I'm playing around, only thing i'm unsure about is - why are your cooldown's one value. And not cooldown1, cooldown2 and cooldown3? Is there a reason? --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 20:42, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Elliot whined about it when they were three separate values. Using the explode tag makes it easier to enter the information when the template is placed on a page, but it complicates the underlying code. Right now I'm trying to figure it out with the name and id, which are single entries. Chris3145 20:47, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
You may want to look at UESPWiki:MetaTemplate (if you haven't already), specifically the sections on #save and #load. From what I can see in your template testing, you don't seem to be using the #load command, which is the key part of getting the information #save'd on one page to be displayed on another. You don't want to transclude the entire source page (e.g., you don't want to use {{User:Chris3145/TemplateDemo2}} -- because that's supposed to make the entire contents of the source page get displayed again). Instead you want to have a tag such as {{#load:User:Chris3145/TemplateDemo2|name}} to load the information and then use {{{name}}} to display it. Sorry if you're already doing this -- I just couldn't see it in a quick look through your tests. --NepheleTalk 21:13, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I've been looking at another help that wasn't very good, but I'll check that one out. I just got it working. Chris3145 21:14, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Also, other templates such as Template:Quest Link might be easier places to start than Ingredient_Summary if you're trying to understand how #save/#load works. --NepheleTalk 21:16, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

() Update - I've got know where, I cant get it to #load right :/ Progress is here. here and here, just have a look and a prod with the code if ya like. Thats how i'd like the table to look in Sandbox4 if you transclude that somewhere else), i'll look through that page as well thanks Nephele :) --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 21:17, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

My attempt, I have no clue why the Translations don't work though :/ User:Kiz/Sandbox2

--Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 21:29, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Sweet! I'm trying to see if I can get it to work with explode tags so we don't have to change all the shout pages, but it's tough. Chris3145 21:33, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Well, if you like, we can leave it as is tonight. And I don't mind changing it tomorrow? It's simple enough to change, I could do it all in one big edit whilst leaving your template looking (and functioning) the same just with more param's because I can't get it too work. I've only got 15 minutes left so unless you can get it too work over night :) --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 21:35, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I'll keep trying tonight. There is a certain elegance to using the explodes: entering "words=Fus Ro Dah" instead of "word1=Fus | word2=Ro | word3=Dah". Chris3145 21:37, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Edit - Got it all working, going to look into fonting now :) --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 21:46, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
Which page has your fully working version? Chris3145 21:51, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
All three are needed, one is my Shout Summary, one is Animal Alegiance in my Shout Summary and one is my Shout Entry. Unless you convert more shouts to my summary, it won't work. I admit, mine needs formatting. Sandbox4 is my shout entry, Sandbox2 is my animal allegiance through my shout summary. And my shout summary is in Sandbox 5. (All those are guesses :))Animal Allegiance --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 22:09, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
I made it work with the exploded variables, so we should be able to implement it without having to change any of the shout pages. I need to do a little more testing on the sandbox in the Skyrim namespace.Chris3145 02:43, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Cookie[edit]

Choco chip cookie.png
You have been given a cookie!

Your dedication and diligence to the wiki has not gone unnoticed. A user has seen the progress you've made, and has given you a cookie because of it. Good work! The user had the following to say:

For all the wonderful template work you've been doing, I know the frustrations of tables and table like things and admire you work :) --Kiz ·•· Talk ·•· Contribs ·•· Mail ·•· 20:14, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Much appreciated! Those things can be time sinks for sure. Thanks for your help on them. Chris3145 05:38, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Large spaces[edit]

I noticed you removed a parameter on the quest template. I restored it because it is currently in use. Can you point me to where you were seeing issues? I'll be better to fix it now before it becomes a bigger issue. Thanks. elliot (talk) 19:29, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I didn't look at the number of braces and I thought it was a template used to create a large gap between the description and the next parts of the quest. It was showing up on all the pages that didn't have that variable defined, but the gap seems to have gone from many pages now. Thanks for fixing my mess up. If the large gap crops up again, maybe cleanspace tags would be better to try. Chris3145 20:12, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I found some examples: You can see the gap on Skyrim:A Night To Remember or the old versions of some quest pages, like this one. Chris3145 20:15, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Okay, it was just some additional spacing. They all should be fixed now. elliot (talk) 20:39, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

replace limit[edit]

As you have noticed, #replace cuts off the replacement text after 30 chracters. According to this page this could be fixed by changing a variable on the server. Another workaround would be not to use {{FC}} in the template, and doing the replacement in two stages, both under the limit.

Example:

  • {{#replace:{{#replace:foo allegiance bar|allegiance|<font color="Blue">allegiance}}|allegiance|allegiance</font>}}
  • foo allegiance bar

Justt some thoughts. --Alfwyn 23:51, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. Allegiance now fits with one character to spare. Chris3145 00:13, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Another thought on Shout Entry template[edit]

I found it odd that when it came to location, the table suddenly became a bullet list. I was thinking you could change it so |rowspan=3| would only apply if there is only one location, which should be easy. Otherwise, it could break each location into its own cell so it would be in line with the rest of the template. I'd attempt this myself, but this wiki has some extra coding on it I don't recognize, and I'd rather not risk making creating any errors. If you disagree, I'll understand. I mainly edit BioShock and Minecraft Wikis, anyway. MegaScience 16:27, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

I think that would look good on a shout like Aura Whisper, but on shouts with longer location descriptions, like Unrelenting Force, it wouldn't work so well. Chris3145 16:50, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmm... What's your screen resolution? On my screen, they don't look that long. But I'm at 1920x1080, so I'd understand if I'm not seeing it correctly. BioShock Wiki is on Wikia, so there's a set page width that creates less difference between monitors. MegaScience 17:24, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Effect Images[edit]

Just a quick notice, that there is already a discussion about it at UESPWiki:Community_Portal#Effect_Images. --Alfwyn 17:19, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Unnecessary Category[edit]

Can you remove the category from User:Chris3145/Template? I can't really think of a reason to use it, and it is needlessly showing up on the Special:WantedCategories. Thanks! elliot (talk) 09:57, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Done. I was doing a bit of testing, and forgot to clean that up. Chris3145 12:23, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Dragon Shouts[edit]

For reasons I'm not even going to try to speculate on, your Dragon Shouts subpage is a frequent target of spambots hitting our Abuse Filter, so I'm semi-protecting it. This shouldn't affect you in any way, but I thought I'd let you know in case you were wondering why. Robin Hood  (talk) 01:49, 6 March 2014 (GMT)

That sounds good. Thanks for the heads up. It's probably not necessary for me to reply to a comment from three years ago, but I wanted you to know that your work is noticed and appreciated. :) Chris3145 (talk) 20:02, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
