The memories of the Dwarves
Kireth Vanos has been exploring the ruins of Mzulft, looking for a valuable piece of forgotten lore. Her brother Raynor and her plan to use their findings to get invited into either Shad Astula or the Mages Guild.

Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to Kireth Vanos in Mzulft.
  2. Help Kireth find the key in the ice tunnels.
  3. Go to the lore vault.
  4. Help the siblings decide which memory of the Dwemer to record.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Kireth thinks she's on the verge of a discovery, but has been having problems with the constructs. With your help, she'll finally be able to find her prize.

"Raynor and I are certain there's something of value down here, but it's locked up tighter than any of the ruins I've ever crawled through.
We have to find it. Otherwise, this entire trip has been nothing but a big waste of time."
What are you looking for down here?
"Our research points to a treasure trove of lore buried in these ruins. I even found one of the lore vaults. It had a Dwemer memory device and everything!
But the area is buried in snow and swarming with constructs. Also, we need a key."

At this point, she'll become a temporary follower. Bring her through the east door in the previous room, and then protect her as you take her around the loop. She will periodically call for you to stop and dig around. Continue walking around with her until she finds the key she needs. Keep an eye out; there are numerous Dwarven Centurions, and steam pipes filled with Swarming Dwarven Spiders, in the ice tunnels (their locations are posted to the map).

Once she has it, take her to the middle of the eastern corridor, where a skeleton is holding the Mzulft Researcher's Journal. It suggests that the nearby crystals can be used to imprint information onto a glass orb... if only you had one. Fortunately, it also mentions that the researcher found a single orb in the sacks nearby before getting trapped in the vault. These sacks are now highlighted with quest markers; go over and retrieve the Uncharged Dwemer Orb. The other two sacks will contain nothing and will harmlessly explode.

Give the orb to Kireth and Raynor will appear, having managed to fix the lift nearby. The two of them will discuss the findings, but there's a problem. You only have one orb, but there are two pieces of information they can claim: a map of all Dwemer ruins across Tamriel, and an explanation of how the Dwemer used Soul Gems to power their constructs. The siblings are undecided on which is the better piece of information to take, and so they leave you to decide.

The decision has no effect on the quest. You can side with Kireth to imprint the maps or with Raynor to save the information on Soul Gems. Either way, you'll be asked to tell the other why you think that their way is best, and you'll get your reward for helping them.

Quest Stages[edit]

Kireth's Amazing Plan
Finishes Quest Journal Entry
The tunnels buried in ice are in the eastern portion of the ruins. I should lead Kireth to that area.
Objective: Enter the Ice Tunnels
We've reached the ice tunnels in Mzulft. I should lead Kireth around and keep her safe while she looks for places to dig for the key.
Objective: Help Kireth Find the Key
Kireth found the key that operates the Dwemer memory device. She wants me to accompany her to the vault at the deepest part of the snow-filled ruin.
Objective: Go To the Vault
While Kireth examines the Dwemer memory device, I should read the journal lying nearby.
Objective: Read the Researcher's Journal
The research journal mentioned that one of the sacks in the vault contained an intact glass orb. I should search for it.
Objective: Find an Uncharged Dwemer Orb
I found an intact Dwemer orb just as Raynor entered the vault. I should listen to what he and Kireth have to say about how to use the memory device.
Objective: Listen to Kireth and Raynor
The memory device has enough power remaining to make one imprint. Besides, we only found one intact orb. Kireth and Raynor disagree on which bit of lore to copy. They want me to help them decide.
Complete one: Support Kireth or Support Raynor
Finishes quest☑ (If you sided with Kireth) I agreed with Kireth, who wants to use the orb to record the ancient Dwemer maps. With the maps, she believes that she and her brother can become the premiere experts on Dwemer lore. She was pleased, but Raynor less so. I should console him.
Objective: Talk to Raynor Vanos
Finishes quest☑ (If you sided with Raynor) I agreed with Raynor, who wants to bring the soul gem lore to the Mages Guild. Kireth and Raynor will finally get recognized for their efforts, but Kireth isn't happy. I should talk to her.
Objective: Talk to Kireth Vanos

* Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the game and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
