Can't equip crown[edit]

I can't equip the crown of nentalata. Has this happened to anyone else? - Bjcffnet 02:59, 21 May 2006 (EDT)

you have to drop it on the floor and pick it up again, same with the staff of nenalanta — Unsigned comment by Azaghal (talkcontribs) at 18:29 on 21 May 2006‎

Rewards questions[edit]

<b\>Reward: Left over gold from 1000 gold loan, and whatever looted or salvaged from fallen enemies.

Is it really necessary to include "and whatever looted or salvaged from fallen enemies"? Isn't that implied in any quest? Giamgiam 18:44, 2 July 2007 (EDT)

Nope, not really necessary. I've revised it. --NepheleTalk 00:21, 3 July 2007 (EDT)

Claude[edit]

Is it possible for Claude to survive the Undead Attack? If so, is there any interesting dialogue from him?--Willyhead 11:44, 22 July 2007 (EDT)

Its a pain in the ass but he can survive and just mentions how he didnt think Umbacanno was a king.
How do you get it so the crown of Lindai will be able to be repaired constantly? I want to get my armorer up. — Unsigned comment by 68.60.226.203 (talk) at 05:07 on 27 July 2007
I appreciate the info, but can anyone note on the page exactly what he says please?--Willyhead 15:20, 21 August 2007 (EDT)
I was at level 34 with Maric when I did this quest. It's rough, but more of a challenge to get him to survive. I healed him once during the fight, we both escaped the ruin, and walked back to Roxey Inn. Maric will say- I never suspected that Umbacanno was up to no good. Apparently he was as mad as he was rich. He will also, I believe, make some smart ass comment about having to find another employer. (This is dialogue that is simply overheard from him after you defeat Umbacanno.) To equip the crown of Nenelata, give it to Umbacanno, then kill and loot him after the fight with the undead. When I left the ruins, I dropped the crown from my inventory then picked it back up. It was at full power, with a weight factor of one, and equipable. — Unsigned comment by 66.244.5.20 (talk) at 02:13 on 21 November 2007
I found it easy for him to survive, he just stood there without engaging in combat, and no enemies attacked him! One nether lich was just behind him but didn't attack. I'm sorry but I can't recall exactly what he said. Update: I've reloaded a previous save and managed to find out exactly what he said: "I never suspected Umbacano might be up to no good. Apparently he was as mad as he was rich!" He says this by clicking on the "Umbacano"-topic. Ending the Quest[edit]

I gave Umbacano the wrong crown and he died, it says to escape the ruins, so I did. It is still in my journal though, how do I end it? 12.210.228.164 16:04, 25 July 2007 (EDT)

Nenalata internal doors don't open[edit]

I'm unable to complete this quest as the internal doors won't open. I meet Umbacano out front and get him to wait while I go in and clean the place out. There's a gate with a pressure pad not far inside which does not open. There's no work aroud as far as I can see. Anyone else have this problem? — Unsigned comment by 59.167.94.231 (talk) at 14:04 on 19 September 2007

If you mean the gate on your left immediately on your left as you enter the ruin (H on the map), it's not supposed to open - you have to go the long way around. --RpehTalk 10:35, 19 September 2007 (EDT)
I also have the same problem and the push block doesn't open the door the zombies are behind.I've tried to save then reload but neither the push block wont open the door to the left where the necromancer is found ,nor the pressure plate to open the door to the large room after entering the second chamber.--CjofthyTalk 14:54, 23 January 2012‎

Corrupting the game because of the Quest?[edit]

I tried to exploit the bug where you can get both crowns, however for some reason everytime i now try to load my file, the loading screen freezes. always at the exact same point. is there a reason for this? what can i do? i am not about to restart 300-some hours of gameplay. — Unsigned comment by Krathos (talkcontribs) at 01:11 on 7 December 2007

Not sure what exploit you meant. You can get both crowns just by giving Umbacano the real one and then killing him. The other crown will still be at Lindai. Try loading a previous save and see what happens. If you constantly rewrite 1 savegame for your whole game then i have no pity for you, thats just dumb. — Unsigned comment by 209.134.75.234 (talk) at 19:16 on 30 May 2008

Stealing the Crown of Nenalata[edit]

"Break into Herminia's house, make your way up to her bedroom and you'll find the crown in an Ayleid cask. You can either pick the lock on the Ayleid cask (Hard) or pick the lock on her desk (Average) to obtain the key to the Ayleid cask."

In my experience the lock on the desk is leveled (which means a Hard lock for my character). Can anyone confirm ? — Unsigned comment by Namu (talkcontribs) at 12:34 on 22 February 2008

This looks to be a yes/no answer. Looking at the Construction Set, the lock difficulty for the desk is 50, unlevelled, which is actually a bit harder than a normal Average lock (difficulty 40). Similarly, the lock on the cask is difficulty 70, unlevelled, which is a bit easier than a normal Hard lock (difficulty 80). I'm no expert, but I believe this means you'd have to use Open Hard Lock on both if you're doing it via a spell. — Unsigned comment by RobinHood70 (talkcontribs) at 16:51 on 22 February 2008
Robin Hood's info looks correct to me, so I'll change the article to state hard lock. --NepheleTalk 14:55, 22 February 2008 (EST)

Question[edit]

Vampire Umbacano

There is a script which turns Umbacano into a vampire and executes "SetActorFullName "King of Nenalata" on him. When he becomes the king, can you get Porphryic Hemophilia from him? — Unsigned comment by Dagoth Ur, Mad God (talkcontribs) at 11:11 on 12 May 2008‎

Concerning vampirism, as far as i know, no he doe not become a vampire at any point in the game. --Volanaro 07:29, 12 May 2008 (EDT)
No he's right. When Umbacano transforms he gets all the vampire attributes added to him (disease, attributes, skills, spells) although he isn't added to the Vampire faction. I don't know if this means you can catch PH from him though. –RpehTCE 08:14, 12 May 2008 (EDT)
I'm dtermined to start learning about the construction set at some point, mainly so that i can tweak the game to my preferences but also so that i can properly answer questions like this! --Volanaro 08:21, 12 May 2008 (EDT)
He uses a Staff and Spells, so i don't know if he attacks you for it to be contracted. (unless he has something else i don't remember.) Lucky the Cat Guy 22:24, 6 August 2008 (EDT)
He does turn into a Vampire, cast a 100point charm spell on him then talk to him, you can see his fangs--VergilSparda 18:45, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
VergilSparda is wrong, Umbacano does not turn into a vampire(no fangs, red eyes, powers, disease), only the vampire skills and abilities are given to him. Also all he says is what he says when you ask after he follows you but before he sits on the throne. Stirksailor 03:30, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
Vergil Sparda is not wrong, Give me a few hours and i will get a picture of him.--VergilSparda 16:46, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Hmm... Now that we know for definate that he becomes a vampire, I wonder why he is made into one? I see no reason for it, the only other Ayleids that were vampires are the ones in Sundercliff Watch.--VergilSparda 12:05, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
I think that it is actually Umbacano's body possessed by the king of Nenalata. The miner in Morrowind and the KoN could very well be the same person. 124.181.33.85 14:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Can someone explain?[edit]

More of a curiosity than a serious question, but how exactly would Umbacano expect to revitalize the Ayleid kingdom with no subordinates? If his plan all along was to become king, can we assume he was deranged and just wanted a throne, or that he planned to take over Tamriel with this power? Seems crazy to covet a kingdom with no people... — Unsigned comment by 209.134.75.234 (talk)

Hard to gauge the motivations of the deranged, mainly because there are so many motives they could pursue. Perhaps there's a submerged racism movement within High Elf culture who wishes to see the return of Elven power over Cyrodiil. Maybe Umbacano thinks his actions will inspire a rebellion. Or perhaps he thought the power of the crown and throne would make him god-like. Sure, he's not going to return the Ayleid kingdoms to their former glory, but perhaps he believed a close approximation— a Mer-dominated Empire, would be good enough. —Dark Spark 11:51, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
could it not be that he is merely insane? PS. cheers to whoever reploed so quickly to my question (the one at the bottom) (EDIT) — Unsigned comment by 88.110.77.119 (talk) at 21:45 on 27 May 2009

Herminia Cinna's book[edit]

Odd that Umbacano has a book by his rival, Herminia Cinna on the The Last king of the Ayleids in his attic. 203.91.84.7 10:25, 31 May 2008 (EDT)

Not that odd, if you want to know how your any of your opponents work and think. —Dark Spark 11:51, 8 June 2008 (EDT)
It may also be because it says Nenalata is the resting place of the Last King of the Ayleids at the end of the book. --M'aiq the Liar Talk 00:29, 18 September 2008 (EDT)

No Cask[edit]

Hi. This is only slightly related to the quest but it is bugging me to no end. I would also like to say that you can pickpocket the key for the desk off Herminia Cinna and get the key for the cask from there. If you haven't started the quest yet does it stop the Ayleid cask being in her room. I haven't started it yet and was able to pickpocket the desk key off her. Because I am a theif I openned the desk (which the key turns out to open) and found the 'Ayleid Cask Key' yet no matter how hard I try the cask itself is nowhere to be found in her room?!? Is it really not there unless you start the quest or am I just too stupid to find it? Someone please clear this up for me. — Unsigned comment by 88.110.77.119 (talk) at 18:01 on 27 May 2009‎

Nope, the cask won't appear until stage 10 of the quest (see Oblivion:Secrets of the Ayleids#Notes), even if you possess the key to it. --SerCenKing Talk 15:46, 27 May 2009 (EDT)

Undead Can't Detect[edit]

It says that the undead can detect you even if you are invisible or chamaeleon but I used an invisible spell and They CANT detect me.Should this be happening? — Unsigned comment by 84.69.189.53 (talk) at 18:03 on 4 July 2009‎

That information seems to be incorrect. I just tried using 100% chameleon and was definitely not detected. The liches summoned their skeletons but then they all stood around doing nothing, even when attacked. I think whoever added that information may have been fooled by the summon spells. I've deleted that line from the article. –rpehTCE 18:36, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
In my case even though my chameleon was at 137% the Liches were able to detect me but not until I killed Umbacano, of note however

He looks exactly the same as Umbacano, only he is wearing the Ayleid crown of Nenalata, if you've done the quest then you'll see him. You dont have to kill him by the way, using a 100point charm spell then drain personality spells i managed to rase his dispostion to 100. how much gold[edit]

I wonder how much gold worth of stolen goods are available in Umbacano's manor?

Specifically, how far into the Thieves Guild chain can one get just from raiding that place using the "window of opportunity" mentioned in the article? (For the stolen goods fenced requirements) 67.193.109.219 01:51, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Well, assuming that you completed The Collector then there will be the 10 statues there (base value 250) and depending on your merchantile skill (Most people can get a 50% deal, no matter what level i think?) you will be able to get 125 gold for them, 125 x 10 = 1250 and you only need 1000 gold to complete the fences, so you'll get aaall the way mate Benolds 08:32, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Clearing Nenalata early[edit]

I picked up the SotA quest, and grabbed the Lindai crown and returned it to Umbacano. I decided to clear Nenalata then wait for the others, but when I exited the area after clearing, they were waiting at the entrance. o_O I know I didn't spend three game days there. Anyone else have that happen? 67.193.109.219 04:16, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

they arrive before the three days deadline, its only you that has to be there within three days, they often arrive after a session change whilst you're in the aera (going from dungeon to outside, waiting sleeping ect) JamesDC99 19:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

What Happens to Maric?[edit]

Umbacano's "assistance"[edit]

I quote from the article:

Although clearing the ruin before leading Umbacano through it might seem a good idea, Nenalata is populated with especially powerful enemies for your level, and you might find yourself needing all of the help Umbacano and Claude Maric can give you.

I attempted this quest at level 32, and I think there should be some more detail here for higher levels. Let me explain: if you enter the ruin with Umbacano and Claude Maric in tow, and immediately start making your way through, attacking enemies you find along the way, Umbacano and Maric do a fairly good job of keeping pace with you (assuming you've told Umbacano to follow you), only pushing onward when you do. However, Umbacano's and Maric's battle strategy seems to be: Rush in, expose yourself to maximal damage, and attack in an uncoordinated manner so that friends and foes alike are hitting you. This means you will end up assisting Umbacano and Maric more often than they assist you. Keeping Umbacano alive during these skirmishes can be an enormous challenge, even for a seasoned player. Furthermore, if you enter the ruin and wait for about 15 seconds at the entrance, Umbacano and Maric both begin rushing into the ruin on their own, attacking every enemy they encounter, without waiting for you to catch up.

Both of the aforementioned scenarios come at the extremely high risk (especially at higher levels) of Umbacano dying amidst the battle (especially if you accidentally hit him yourself), which gives you the message that Umbacano has died and that the secrets of the Ayleids will remain forever unknown (basically ending the quest). Because Umbacano has asked you to serve as his bodyguard, a good strategy at higher levels seems to be telling him to stay put at certain points while you clear individual rooms, since you have the option in dialogue with Umbacano. Otherwise, particular rooms will almost certainly prove to be death traps for Umbacano, since at higher levels, they are likely to be replete with Nether Lichs, Gloom Wraiths, and Skeleton Champions, with their requisite summoned creatures. And trying to battle 6+ enemies while Umbacano and Maric fumble about is almost guaranteed to end Umbacano's life even faster, since you yourself will probably hit him at least once.

I think these caveats should be mentioned in this article. Thoughts? Eganio 02:41, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Yup, I agree. Followers are helpful if they're essential and you therefore don't have to help them. I'll add it to the article. --SerCenKing Talk 18:30, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Moved notes[edit]

  • The quest concludes with the death of Umbacano but the guards at his manor house are still there, wondering why he hasn't returned. The items in his house are still considered Umbacano's property but there is an opportunity for an enterprising thief. There is a female orc, named Umog gra-Marad, who works as a night guard right inside the entrance. If you raise her disposition to 75 or above she'll tell you that she slips out now and then to get a drink at the Tiber Septim Hotel. You'll get a conversation topic "That's pretty expensive", select it, and it will give you the option to treat her to a drink, for 100 septims. This will give you enough time to clear his house of a good deal of loot, including the ten Ancestors. Using the keys that you can loot from Umbacano's body can help you with unlocking the inner doors and display cases.
  • Another way to 'reacquire' the statues you sold to Umbacano is to return to the house after you have agreed to accompany him to the ruins of Nenalata, but before actually taking him inside. During this window of time, Umbacano will have left the house to travel to the ruins, but when you approach his butler Jollring, he will still ask you if you would like to be shown upstairs. When you agree, however, Jollring will walk out the front door. You can now head upstairs and loot as you please, for free.
  • It is possible to jump up the stairs from the throne room before they completely descend allowing you to snipe with a bow or ranged spells at the undead below.

I've been moving the notes from the quest pages as part of a task for the UESPwiki (This is the last article that needs doing for the task :-)) Feel free to re-add them after leaving a message here explaining your decision to re-add it. --AKB Talk 17:12, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Can't wear the crown[edit]

I have the crown and I was wearing it just fine for about 7 levels then I finally started doing the main line quests. (yeah I'm a completionist) When I got to the quest with the mystic dawn where they took my gear, it suddenly wouldn't let me wear it anymore. Though I will admit I don't pay the closest of attention to my character so it may have been sooner but that's when I noticed it. Getting both Crowns[edit]

From what I understand, the steps to getting both crowns are:

  • talk to Herminia to get the key to Lindai's tomb
  • steal the Nenalata one anyways
  • give umbacano the nenalata one
  • finish the quest
  • take the nenalata crown
  • go to lindai and steal the lindai crown (which is no longer a quest item?)

Or does the both crown method end in lindai getting stuck as a quest item, or is there some other order, or what? edit: damn I always forget to sign... Stouf761 05:28, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

I havnt done it but thats the correcct method and i dont think it gets stuck as quest item (Eddie the head 05:23, 13 July 2011 (UTC))
That's definitely the right method anyways. If Umbacano is dead then the quest is completed, so I can see no reason why the other crown would still be considered a quest item. Kitkat1749 10:04, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I can confirm that this method will work, and that the Lindai crown will not be stuck as a quest item. --Legoless 10:21, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

King of Nelenta - You don't have to kill him.[edit]

King of Nelenta - You don't have to kill him. The Collector Quest can still be completed.

Quoted from user in "King of Nelenta" section above:

You dont have to kill him by the way, using a 100point charm spell then drain personality spells i managed to [raise] his [disposition] to 100. He no longer attacks you when you enter the throne room, this is Great for Roleplaying, you can also carry on with the quest The Collector.--VergilSparda 13:54, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

This seems like useful information, can anyone verify? A person who already made the mistake of starting this quest before finishing The Collector, could use this fix. A person is likely to find out about the warnings on the quests right after Umbacano dies and they realize they can't finish The Collector. If they then go to the quest page to see what happened, they could see this tip. Then they would only have to go back to a slightly earlier save, rather than a much earlier save. I think this should be added to the main page. --Amsuko 02:31, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Claude!! The amazing invisible man!![edit]

After being ambushed during the quest "nothing you can't possess", I killed Claude as he walked away from me, invisible. However, as soon as he showed up during "secrets of the Ayleids", he was still invisible, and remained that way for the entire quest. when I say invisible, I mean totally, 100% invisible, not just using armor with a chameleon enchantment (Although he was, as well.). This lasted until he met an untimely death at the hands of the undead in the throne room. I'm not entirely sure if he was actually invisible, or just appeared to be. This is because he didn't see any combat until the throne room, where he betrayed his position by attacking a swarm of liches. Anyone else get this strange glitch?--Playerjjjj 14:19, 28 August 2012 (UTC)Playerjjjj

Ah ha! Sorry about my last post, as I understand now. I had never seen the chameleon effect before in oblivion, and didn't know just how invisible it makes you look. I had expected it would look similar to Morrowind, where the npc would just fade slightly, depending on the magnitude. I was unaware that it would be so transparent looking. Pickpocketing Umbacano[edit]

Out on a whim, after reading about the quest beforehand, I decided to pickpocket Umbacano and see what he had on him. After looting him and apparently getting caught, he replied with "Pfft. Take it; I have no need for it, anyway." with a rather nasty tone. I'm assuming this is only because he's about to become the King of the Ayleids, and his usual "I caught you pickpocketing!" dialogue has been changed the reflect this, but can anyone else confirm? I honestly don't know what happend frankly, It could have been an error in the system but Since it obvious that XBox does not have a CS I can't back anything up, so I guess we might as well give up trying to figure this out.thanks anyways(no sarcasim)Dunehelm (talk) 14:49, 20 October 2013 (GMT)
The XBox version doesn't actually have any significant differences from the PC version, so I don't know what to tell you.
I will say though that on talk pages, you should always indent your replies by adding one more ":" at the start of your line than the person before you. It just makes conversations easier to follow. Xolroc (talk) 15:14, 20 October 2013 (GMT)

The last king of the Ayleids[edit]

If the ruler of Nenalata was the last king of the Ayleids, does that mean that he was the King Laloriaran Dynar whom you talk with briefly during your time travel back to the battle of the Glenumbra Moors in Elder Scrolls Online? 174.6.51.17 01:16, 19 June 2014 (GMT)

That seems to be the implication they were going for. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 01:29, 19 June 2014 (GMT)
(edit conflict) Yes, I believe he is described as the king of Nenalata originally, before fleeing to the High Rock region. Jeancey (talk) 01:29, 19 June 2014 (GMT)

On the various idiocies currently occurring in Nenalata[edit]

I've been messing around with this quest tonight, not really trying to complete it, just having fun with it and i've run into all sorts of amusing events. First off, upon entering Nenalata it would appear that the liches were engaging in some sort of civil war, firstly killing off all the skeletons they summoned then blasting each other. I have no explanation for this i've never seen such a thing before and it gets better. Next, when I arrived at the end of the dungeon I donned my 100% chameleon suit before Umbacano decided to recite his ayleid garble and subsequent transformation. Now I did manage to charm Umbacano and then raise his disposition back to friendship levels and soon I will test completing the Collector quest but the strange part here is that the liches summoned by Umbacano could still detect me while I was under my 100% chameleon suit, if only for brief periods of time, and as was noted partake in "some funky dance thing". All 6 of them proceeded to follow me through the level and then outside where two of them have been permanently stuck. I fast traveled away and waited for the dungeon to respawn, upon arriving back they were still there to greet and attack me joined by another. I ran back through the dungeon to find Umbacano still sitting at his throne, but only half the doors of the ruin open and six more liches, half of which are detecting me through chameleon, chasing me and still doing the funky dance thing. Wut? User:Morgoth Morgoth (talk) 12:03, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Liches always fight each other due to a faction error. I've noticed the weird detection thing in the throne room myself, so I can only assume it's script-based. —Legoless (talk) 16:25, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
Wow, i've never seen it before. It seems that Umbacano's liches are almost like the King of Miscarcand in that they follow you, but they are unlike him in that they give up the chase when you get far enough away. User:Morgoth 16:00, 29 January 2016 (CT)
