Lore:Dragonbone Mail
The Dragonbone Mail, or the Dragonbone Cuirass,[1] is thought to be one of the greatest artifacts any collector or hero could own. While many fine pieces of armor have been constructed with real dragon bone, the Dragonbone Mail was enchanted by the first Imperial Battlemage of Tiber Septim, Zurin Arctus, in the early years of the Third Era. It's described as a truly exquisite piece of work, and many have sought to possess it.
The properties of the cuirass allow the wearer to resist fire, and to damage an enemy with a blast of fire. Little is known about the involvement of Zurin Arctus with the enchantment of the cuirass, but an old tale speaks of a debt that he owed to a traveling warrior. Like the warrior, the Dragonbone Mail never stays put for long.[2]
History[edit]
The last living dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, at one point befriended the sorcerer Divayth Fyr.[3] At Fyr's behest, Yagrum Bagarn wrote a book known as Tamrielic Lore[4]:241 from the notes that he gathered over the centuries, listing the Dragonbone Mail among the artifacts of "unimaginable significance". The book also provided some general information on the artifact to its readers.[2]
Circa 3E 427, the Nerevarine reportedly recovered the cuirass from the flooded Dwemer ruins of Mudan in Morrowind. Later that year, they sold the mail to Torasa Aram, who put it on display in the Mournhold Museum of Artifacts.[1]
Sometime in the Fourth Era, the Dragonbone Mail was stolen from a cargo shipment belonging to the Imperial Legion by Bjormund Wind-Strider of the Crimson Dirks. As he was a descendent of lineage that once served as Dragonguards, the thought of wearing armor fashioned from the remains of Dragons he felt was predestined. Seeking to prove himself, he took a bounty to slay an influential member of the Forsworn, Crowstooth, but was overwhelmed and killed by their gathering forces at Arcwind Point in Skyrim. The Last Dragonborn subsequently sought out the bounty and recovered the cuirass from the corpse of Bjormund.[5]
