New Info?[edit]

Is this new TESV info? "A novel that takes places forty-five years after the Oblivion Crisis, which is the story of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion game and the expansion pack Shivering Isles. It partly bridges the gap for the next game, which is set 200 years after the Oblivion crisis." --129.234.228.82 09:51, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

To the best of my knowledge, Bethesda hasn't announced an official timeframe for the next game. Unless someone could provide a dirrect source form Bethesda, or even Random House Publishing, I would say no. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 15:11, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
The above link no longer works. It does, however, beg the question of what exactly that page was doing on Amazon in the first place - although I'm sure there are any number of reasonable explanations. ;) It would be perfectly believable, mind, for the next game to be 200 years after Oblivion as IIRC there are two books coming out and this one is set 40 years after TESIV. Still though, as you said, without a more concrete source it's nothing more than speculation. --129.234.252.67 11:27, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

The link still does work the page it leads to is wear you can buy the book infernal city -trotski 1/1/2010 6:40pm

Emperor?[edit]

The description says something about an emperor's son...does that mean there's a new line of dragonblood emperors?— Unsigned comment by Remorse1994 (talkcontribs) at 17:25 on 15 October 2009

According to the Bethsoft link, it is the "Emperor's young son", but that doesn't necessarily mean that the Dragon Lineage still exists. It could just be the son of whoever is now running the Empire. Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs,E-mail) 17:28, 15 October 2009 (UTC)
I suppose how the new emperor comes around will be revealed in the book and/or the elder scrolls 5... Remorse1994 19:08, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

A guy named Titus Mede is the new Emperor. Mister-Sidd 13:51, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Pretty Cool[edit]

This looks pretty cool. I hope it mentions things that would be relatable to Oblivion. --Oblivion nerd 20:11, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Looks pretty lame to me. Really, it's a magic, floating city; it's a fantasy-genre cliche. Nevertheless, since I'm such a big Elder Scrolls fan, I would like Greg Keyes to prove me wrong. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk) (Deeds) 00:37, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Frankly, I didn't find the story itself that gripping until it started having more ties to the pre-existent lore. Dabbling with daedra and all that. Until about 2/3 way through the book, it mostly "name drops" references to the Tamriel we know and love. Chunk of Ham 10:23, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Looking Forward To This[edit]

I saw an article about this in the October issue of Game Informer. In the article, it was said that Bethesda "gave him (Greg Keyes) access to our internal lore website, so he had access to unpublished, secret lore" (game informer magizine issue 199 pg. 44). It also said that Bethesda made him play Oblivion sevaral times and quized him on some of the "dustier corners of (the) lore" I didn't know that they had an lore website with "unpublished, secret lore". It included an ilistration from the book too. Very cool looking, and made me think that it would be set in Morrowind, as the city looked like a combanation of Telvanni and Velothi architecture. I can't wait to see what kind of stuff will be in this. — Unsigned comment by 68.55.67.135 (talk) on October 21, 2009

That's where Bethesda failed; they should've forced him to play Morrowind serveral times over instead. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk) (Deeds) 15:07, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
No, because the book seems to have more to do with Oblivion than it does Morrowind. Prince Attrebus is the new Emperor's son, and the reason there is a new Emperor is because of the extinction of the Septim line (an event which happens in Oblivion). The book will probably include details on how the Empire collapsed after the Oblivion crysis and the opportunistic organisations (such as the new government in Black Marsh) that have taken control over newly independent states. However, I'm guessing Bethesda would have made him read up on Morrowind lore anyway (to be on the safe side).--81.151.114.136 17:07, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
I was talking about game and lore quality, not relevance. Morrowind lore is simply better than Oblivion lore. --Michaeldsuarez (Talk) (Deeds) 04:33, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
True, Morrowind does have more, better said lore (Thats why it's still my fav game). Still, I would assume that the lore site would have the Morrowind lore as well. Besides, they probably made him play without mods, and I could not play morrowind without Better Bodies at least (my eyes...they BURN!). After reading the plot summery, though, I'm not so sure this was a good idea. And I REALLY hope that the book's plot will not be included in TES V. Morrowind was the awesomest part of the Empire (though it shouldn't be. SIXTH HOUSE FOREVER!), how could they crash a moon into it! That bit doen't make sense any way. In Oblivion, you hear that Vivic is missing. Since he is the one that was holding that moon up in the first place, why would it take 40 years to fall? Why not fall when Vivec vanished? Or even when the Heart was destroyed, since that was the source of most of his power any way. I get the feeling that this book will not be considered canton a year or so from now (though I haven't read it yet, so I can't say for sure).68.55.67.135 00:42, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

First One?[edit]

Is this the first book/novel to be written based around the Elder Scrolls world? If not, then could someone (with the right facts) tell me otherwise?(Cookies... lots and lots of cookies!!! 05:47, 25 October 2009 (UTC))

What do you mean? It is indeed set in the Elder Scrolls universe. --Timenn-<talk> 13:02, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I'm pretty sure it is. --Oblivion nerd 20:46, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Images Are Tyrants[edit]

Well, I'm pretty excited to read this. Did anyone else read the excerpt? I think it ended with someone farting!

I also wonder if I'm the only one who will read this book hearing the voice actors read their races (ugh). Lynda Carter drove me nuts but I did like that Eastern European/Russian thing the Argonian males (Jonathan Bryce) had goin' on... --Irene Metrick 00:17, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

Ha ha, I didn't even think of that. I thought it meant Argonians give off a scent when they're angry. So far it looks like the book will be a fun read.  VIROCONIUM  22:33, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

The Player?[edit]

Is their any mention of the player in the book?or as they would probably call it "Unknown hero" or "Unnamed Champion" i worked to hard to beat this game to be forgotten! D:< all martin did was sit around while i ran around doing chores! D:<<<

It will probably mention the Champion of Cyrodiil, so yes. --Oblivion nerd 13:09, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
No, the player is not mentioned in the book. –Elliot talk 19:35, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
How could the Champion of Cyrodiil be anything but an unkown hero? And why would they choose your character to be the hero if they ever named one? — Unsigned comment by 68.112.109.154 (talk) on 7 December 2009

Synopsis forthcoming?[edit]

Even though this book *just* came out, is there eventually going to be a book plot synopsis/summary here? I wouldn't mind writing it/helping with it. Irene Metrick 20:02, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it is on my list to do today. I just finished it and am thinking about how to go through things. Some people get riled up over spoilers. –Elliot talk 20:11, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
I suppose that's the catch of it, hmm... well, if you'd like help, I'd be happy to contribute. Irene Metrick 20:14, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Feel free! Whoever comes upon it second can just overlook and tweak the other person's work. Thanks. –Elliot talk 20:23, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Started work on it; feel free to delete entirely and follow a different format. I wasn't sure whether to tell each POV story completely or follow the book's sequence of events. I've covered about a quarter of part I. After eating my Thanksgiving meal, I think this is all I've got, lol. --Irene Metrick 20:23, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
I edited it a little bit, and made it a tin bit more detailed. But I am not sure how much we want to put in here... I tried to copy Wikipedia in their style of novel articles, and they go fairly detailed into the story. So, I am not sure. I should be able to finish it sometime this weekend. –Elliot talk 22:30, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

I've read the whole book a few times, if any of you want me to put a better summary up, just ask. Mister-Sidd 13:55, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps there could be a section that warns the reader of spoilers. However, none of the other pages on the site leave out information for the sake of not "spoiling" things, so why start now? Chunk of Ham 10:29, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
We don't warn readers of spoilers, otherwise there will be a tag on every single page. –Elliot talk 10:36, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
I'm aware. That's what I said. Chunk of Ham 10:42, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Yes, but you added a spoiler warning just a few minutes ago. So, I don't know what you think. –Elliot talk 10:45, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

shouldnt u guys write the rest of the summary lol — Unsigned comment by 24.159.3.186 (talk) on 9 January 2010

It's on my mental to-do list. If you think it's important it be done quickly, feel free to do so yourself. --GKtalk2me 04:11, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Section? Characters?[edit]

Are we going to do pages on the characters in the novel? Grayfox1128 17:48, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Yes, but we are still discussing on how to go about doing it. The information will be done in due time, no doubt. –Elliot talk 17:49, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Well if possible I would like to help. If there is another discussion page, please point me to it. Grayfox1128 04:39, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
Here. –Elliot talk 04:41, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Referencing The Novel[edit]

I just added a reference to Lore:Black Marsh ([1]), and it brings up a question; how will we reference things that come from the novel? Should it be immediately apparent in the references section that it's not an in-game book, but rather a published "real-life" book? And if so, how? Elliot and I discussed possibly coming up with a template for referencing the novel; any suggestions/ideas? --GKTalk2me 17:43, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

I have the example in my sandbox, with the actual references in another sandbox. I think they work, are easy to remember, and are better than doing them all by hand. –Elliot talk 09:40, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
I think it will be clear enough that the book is a real novel. We could use Wikipedia's method of referencing to chapters or pages, so I don't think a template is necessary. --Timenn-<talk> 17:14, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
No, it may not be necessary, but, personally, I'll use it; it'll make it easier to add novel stuff into lore, and the easier it is, the more I'm likely to do. I think it looks great; very understated, and it can also be used to reference the second novel when it comes out. --GKTalk2me 20:44, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, I built it to take on the next novel as well. And it makes everything consistent (I have been thinking about making an in-game book reference). Everything doesn't have to be necessary in order to actually have it; it makes things a tiny bit simpler for the people who are referencing the novel (refs can be pretty nasty and confusing). –Elliot talk 21:05, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

mistake in the plot summary[edit]

hey i noticed an mistake in the plot summery, it mention the invisible knife, it says that she can expand it at will, but in fact she can't, the knife is guided by her emotions and it takes her a sgnificant amount of time to discover this(even then she doesn't use it). could i correct this error? Drane 16:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Sure. Reword it as you see fit. --GKTalk2me 17:46, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Umbriel page?[edit]

There is no existing page for Umbriel. Shouldn't one be added? --Oblivion nerd 22:59, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Yes... we are working on it... –Elliot talk 04:25, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Umbra[edit]

Since Umbra is becoming a larger part of TES now, shouldn't we get a Umbra lore page or something. Just a thought I could even make it if you desired so.

Time Frame[edit]

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THE SETTING?!?!(TIME FRAM) I KNOW THE SURROUNDINGS. THANKS :)

Check the summary box in the top right of the page. --GKtalk2me 02:51, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Amazon[edit]

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but Amazon now has a listing for the sequel to The Infernal City.

The title is Lord of Souls and it is due to be published (in paperback) on September 27, 2011.

320 pages Del Rey Publishing ISBN: 978-0345508027

Only time will tell how much of this pre-publication information proves accurate.71.224.13.163 23:17, 3 January 2011 (UTC)Marcus

Definitely worth mentioning - thanks for the news! I'm annoyed that the email I was supposed to get when the book was announced hasn't arrived... rpeh •TCE 23:30, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Canon[edit]

Does anyone know if this is TES Canon? --Debatra 21:41, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it's official TES lore, according to Bethesda. --GKtalk2me 21:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. --Debatra 21:53, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Do you have a link to where Beth confirmed it as canon? (need it for the Unofficial Lore article.) (Rylasasin (talk) 07:19, 18 March 2014 (GMT))

Dealing with the new info[edit]

See Water's Edge and Sardavar Leed

Is there a policy on adding stuff from this book to their respective pages? This stuff isnt game-specific, which is what the pages are for. Thoughts?--Catmaniac66 16:56, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Quite simply, the gamespace pages should be for information relevant to the game. Although there's no explicit policy on this, there's a long history of removing irrelevant "real life" notes and other irrelevant information. I am dead against the idea of including TIC information on OB pages - or anywhere else except Lore. rpeh •TCE 18:08, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
So should we wait for other input (like a day) or just go ahead and remove the info?--Catmaniac66 18:14, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I'd like to wait at least a day, especially since at least one editor - Legoless - disagrees. rpeh •TCE 18:25, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm with rpeh here, game related info should be in gamespace and lore related info in lorespace. What is the point of having lorespace if we just ignore it all of the time? --AKB Talk 18:32, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
There is the question of what to do with info involving places that only have a gamespace page, and not a lore page. I assume as a wiki we dont like to leave info out just because there isnt a place for it. Do we add a bunch of notes to the Infernal city page, or do we create Lore pages that have very little info, or do we just leave the info in limbo? Also, I invited the one person who appears to believe that the info should go on the pages, although he might just have done it because he saw a similar edit on another page.--Catmaniac66 18:36, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
That's not really an issue. The Lore space already has the stubbiest of stubby pages and creating other short pages for some of the places mentioned is not a problem. As I mentioned elsewhere, Sardavar Leed already has a notable history (Alessia grew up there), and the book contains a good amount of info on Water's Edge that would easily form the basis of a Lore page. rpeh •TCE 18:44, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
Works for me. Ill start removing stuff tomorrow if there are no dissenting opinions. I want to give Legoless a chance to make a statement, just in case, although again he probably doesnt agree or disagree, and just added a note for consitency.--Catmaniac66 18:48, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
I don't have any objections to making lore pages for that info, if both the locations merit their own. As Catmaniac suggested, I was under the impression that all Infernal City info was being documented on game-related articles. Feel free to remove the note I made, if it will be documented elsewhere. I just didn't like having it excluded. Legoless 18:53, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

It appears there is enough of a consensus. Ill start removing stuff and in the summary I will direct people to this discussion.--Catmaniac66 18:57, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

I used the "What links here" On the infernal city page, and searched for all Oblivion:'s and Morrowind:'s, turns out those were the only 2 that werent a talk page. I didnt check through the lore page as obviously those are good places to put info.--Catmaniac66 19:04, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Referencing in lore[edit]

Is the way this book is currently cited on the Solstheim lore page appropriate? I mean, obviously TIF's events are canon, but I'm just wondering:

A. If its general format and lack of link is correct, and
B. Whether it breaks the fourth wall.

I don't have any particular problem with it, I just want to know in case I want to reference TIF on other pages in the future. I have no idea about A, though I imagine there are no problems in regards to B. Minor Edits 01:21, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

There's not any problem with the "fourth wall"; the info is presented just like the rest of it. It should, however, be linked, which I just did. --GKtalk2me 17:58, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Timeline Placement[edit]

On both the wars page and this main page, it says the events of the book takes place or is around 4E 40. Where does it say that exactly, or how did it come to that conclusion if the date is inconclusive? --Vincentius1 (talk) 00:18, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

For a quick answer, the official release synopsis (or whatever its called), contains the line "Four decades after the Oblivion Crisis..." That's why this page says "circa 40". Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:48, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I believe the official synopsis is what that date is based on. Upon a quick glance through the book after seeing this question, I think it's actually 4E 48; there's one scene that takes place in Ione where they're describing how "nothing was here 50 years ago" and it was formed when an Oblivion gate sprung up there and the town sort of grew around it after it was destroyed, and another where Sul's describing how Vuhon was partly responsible for the Red Year and was hurled into Oblivion when the ingenium exploded and that he has been there 43 years. ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 01:15, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
