Comments on Page Reorganization[edit]

I know a lot of the UESPWiki pages like "Tutorial", "Introduction", and "Philosophies" have been re-arranged a few times over the last few months, and now here I am moving a page to yet another new name. I'm not trying to just make things more confusing :) I'm actually trying to find ways to streamline some of the UESPWiki pages and make them hopefully more useful, especially to new editors; I'll be slowly working through a few more of these pages over the next little while. My problem with the name "Tutorial" is that it wasn't obvious (to me at least) what the purpose of the page was, especially how it was supposed to differ from the various Help pages. And I also felt that we needed an obvious place to direct new editors and let them know about some of the options available to them. So I chose the name "Getting Started"; one good reason is that Wikipedia's page is also named Getting Started.

My next step is to advertise this page more widely. I'll be:

  • adding it to the side bar
  • fixing the link on the main page
  • adding a link on the page that shows up when a user creates a new account

Are there any other places where a link is needed? Or do you think I'm going overboard? I'd welcome any feedback (especially from newer editors on the site... where would you look for this type of page?) --Nephele 16:29, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Well, I'm relatively new here, but not to the whole wiki process. Looking at this here, I really do like the welcoming feel. It's good. I mean, I'd definitely have some idea of where to go...By the way, is the mentor program active? How do you sign up to be a mentee? I mean, possible mentors are listed... Somercy 16:35, 15 February 2007 (EST)
Yep, the mentor program is active. I revamped UESPWiki:Mentor Program a bit to make the how-to-sign-up part more visible (hopefully). Is more tweaking needed? --Nephele 16:56, 15 February 2007 (EST)
No, not as much now. Nymphet, you secretly run this machine, don't you? Somercy 17:00, 15 February 2007 (EST)

Page Name[edit]

As I tried to explain above, I didn't choose the name "Getting Started" for this page randomly. I chose it to more clearly differentiate the page's purpose (a place to welcome new editors and point them towards other pages they may want to read). I also chose it because that's the name wikipedia uses for their similar page.

I don't think "How to Contribute" is a better name for this page. First, the page isn't really about how to contribute; it has one section on that topic, but it is not the focus of the page. Second, I find it really confusing having a lot of similarly named UESPWiki pages: "How to Contribute" vs "Helping Out" vs "Task List". I'm trying to work towards reducing overlap between similar pages. I think it's more than just an organizational question: if a new editor reads a page on "how to contribute" and later sees a link to "helping out" they're very likely to think that they've already read the "helping out" page and have no idea that in fact they are two very different pages.

The only places where I created links to this page using the name "How to Contribute" is in places that are very visible to casual readers of the site (namely sidebar and main page). I didn't want someone who is visiting the site just to read about a game to see a link called "Getting Started" and think that they had to read that page just to know how to use the site. I thought about a few other options (e.g., "Getting Started Editing") but they generally seemed to be more awkward. I would welcome other suggestions for a good link name on the side bar.

But I overall I would anticipate that "Getting Started" will be the most common link name for this page, once I go through and cleanup the redirects. On pages like Policies and Guidelines and Help:Contents I think "Getting Started" provides a much better description of the page's contents and purpose than "How to Contribute".

I'm definitely open to other suggestions about this page's name. If anyone can come up with a short name that works both on the side bar and in other places, that would be great. But I think it's really important that the page's name provides a good description of the page's contents and purpose, and "How to Contribute" does not in my opinion do that. --Nephele 16:30, 20 February 2007 (EST)

It's kind of confusing to have an article with one name and all of the links to the article with another. I don't have a preference on what we name this page as long as everything is consistent. --Aristeo | Talk 22:12, 20 February 2007 (EST)
Except it's not all the links to the article. It's just two links to the article that use "How to Contribute". There are also currently two links that use "Getting Started", and I was planning to change at least two other links to "Getting Started" (those are currently using "Introduction" and "Tutorial"). In most of these cases, I think having a link called "How to Contribute" will be more confusing than helpful (e.g., on "Helping Out" saying that you're then supposed to go read another page to learn "How to Contribute" won't make sense; having a link to "Helping Out" right next to a link to "How to Contribute" will also be confusing). So I'd argue that there will be more links using "Getting Started" than "How to Contribute". And there are reasons for the different names based upon the different context: "Getting Started" is in places where the audience is assumed to be primarily editors; "How to Contribute" is in places where the audience is assumed to be primarily readers (not editors). There are other cases where a page has two very different names depending upon the context (e.g. Oblivion:Chorrol Recommendation is also Oblivion:Fingers of the Mountain).
I agree that the best solution would be to come up with a single name that can be used consistently in all places, but I haven't been able to come up with one. I think that in most situations, "How to Contribute" is a less useful name than "Getting Started"; if there is going to be inconsistency anyway, I'd rather settle for using the name that is better on all other counts. --Nephele 22:45, 20 February 2007 (EST)

Two things[edit]

1.Do the plugins work for PS3 if not are there any?

2. I can't complete the quest for the count with the knight. I talk to him and nothing I talk to her all she asks me is if im the count? Any ideas.

Assigning Old Additions[edit]

Just out of curiosity; I've spent such a long time both editing and using this site, that it's about time I created an account. However, is it possible to assign the contributions I made when I was unregistered to a new account? Since they all come from the same IP I thought it might be do-able. I just don't want it to look like my account is brand spanking new ;) — Unsigned comment by 87.127.79.8 (talk) on 11 April 2009

I don't believe that's possible. Besides, edit count is an overestimated measure of one's importance to the site. As a trivial example, the most important editor is Daveh, and he's down in 16th place. –RpehTCE 08:53, 11 April 2009 (EDT)

Okay, thanks. I wasn't worried about 'importance'; compared to most I have barely edited much at all. Just so I didn't look like a 'new egg', as it were ;)

OK to Add?[edit]

I've noticed that there are many caves/forts and such that don't have much information such as wellspring cave. I'm also fairly sure that the maps are NOT randomly generated and that neither are the chest locations. Would it be acceptable that I were to add at least basic maps for now? Or is that something the community would be against? Unschooled 10:16, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure which dungeons you are referring to? As far as I'm away all Oblivion Places have maps with markers, and the Shivering Isles Places that do not have at least basic maps. Could you be referring to the Morrowind Places? In that case, please see these guidelines on how to make those maps, but you're free to work on them. --Timenn-<talk> 11:28, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

There should be some sort of beginners guide[edit]

There should be some type of guide syain it is wise to do this and not good to do that.

For example:

Suggested Birth star: Thief (FTW)

Attributes: Marksman, Sneak etc...

And more like try this sell this to get money go here use this sword.

Besides that i love this place — Unsigned comment by 173.72.157.188 (talk) at 00:42 on 25 October 2009

Well, it would be a totally useles guide if we told the players what to do from beggining to end as it would spoil the entire game, after all it's a RPG game meaning that you get to do whatever you want and in any order.--BlackYoshi 02:49, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

You may have overlooked the note regarding the dwemer forge which is added after the other upgrades are purchased. The forge itself is available. as are the other upgrades, from Nilphas Omellian.

TESV Media[edit]

Hey all,

I've managed to reassemble the large image file used as a backdrop for the Skyrim teaser website and thought it would be a useful addition to the wiki. I've tried to upload it, but apparently the word Skyrim is in a blacklist right now. Any suggestions?

--Lepinsk 00:21, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

You could ask for a temporary removal of the word "Skyrim" from the blacklist. Or you could upload the image to another site (like PhotoBucket) and provide a link. --Rigas Papadopoulos • TalkDeeds 00:24, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Right, yeah... I figured there were a bunch of ways I could skirt the blacklist (like naming the file TESV instead of Skyrim) but I thought that perhaps the blacklist was there for a reason and the wiki doesn't want anything Skyrim related yet. Any thoughts on that?

Alto Wine Quest?[edit]

For some reason I cannot move or use Alto Wine in my inventory - it is labeled as a quest item. I can find no related quests. Did I miss something?? Thanks, Sheptapes67.250.54.54 21:26, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

It could be some kind of miscellaneous quest such as bring X to Y for a small reward. RIM 22:13, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Mentor...[edit]

Hi. I'm a new(ish- Almost half a year...) user. Up until this point, I've been mostly just reading on the site because there's not a lot for me to do. But I'd really like to help the wiki more. I play Morrowind (I have both the expansions but have started neither of them) on the PC. I don't own any of the other games, but I'm a huge nerd, so I'm very familiar with Morrowind. I've made little edits here and there and the only really big thing I've done is created this page. I'm not super familiar with the Mentor program...but I'd love to have some advice about how I can be more useful. Thanks!! --Archer7 00:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

All the mentors are listed here--I'm one of them, too. If there's anything here you think you can help out with, that'd be great. There's a huge list of stuff that you can do here as well. Especially the part about describing towns and cities. Vely►Talk►Email 00:58, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
Awesome possum. Thanks! --Archer7 21:03, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
You're very welcome! Found all those pages through that nice "how to contribute" link on the left, under the search bar. If you ever run out of things to do, you can always check out [link]. It'll give you a random MW page, and you can check the facts, grammar, etc. without being confined to a particular category. Vely►Talk►Email 22:04, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

About "Skyrim: Making Money"[edit]

For the transmute method:

I have found that the Imperial and Stormcloak camps renew their stock and gold almost immediately. If you buy the iron ore(s) and transmute them, then go to the next camp and sell the gold ore(s) and buy the iron ore(s). Doing just this will help your Alteration and Speech skills. I have been buying the iron from one camp and only selling a single gold ore to make up my costs and a little profit. Early in the game an iron ore buys for 6 gold, and a gold ore sells for at least 18 gold. I use the Zenithars blessing to buy iron for 5 gold and sell the gold ore for at least 23 gold. My two favorite locations are the Pale Imperial Camp and the Hjaalmarch Stormcloak Camp. They are very close to each other and I go back and forth between them either on foot or fast travel. Each time you get back to them they have renewed their stock and gold. I have found this true for all military camps.

Using military camps to sell weapons and armor:

Every time I have left a military camp and gone to another location and then gone right back to the same camp, The Quartermaster's stock and gold have renewed. For example, I had too much weight to move-I drop enough weight to move and fast travel to the nearest camp. Sell the weapons and armor and go back to where I dropped the rest. I pick it up and go back to the same camp and finish selling weapons and armor.

Too much weight to carry?:

I also have used reanimate spells and put my excess weight into a corpse. Reanimate the corpse and fast travel to store(storage) or sell the loot. I have used people and animals for this. I also recommend a "Staff of ____"(insert leveled reanimate spell) as your corpse of carry does not turn into a pile of ash when the reanimate runs out. This is particularly helpful if your arrival point is a bit far from your sale or storage point. There is a perk available later that allows your self-cast reanimate spells to not crumble to ash.

Serana Recruiting (PS3)[edit]

Quick tip: after completion of Dawnguard questline it may be impossible to recruit Serana once dismissed without console commands. If you are on ps3 a workaround is to go to Valkihar Undercroft and wait. Serana should appear and have dialogue as if she was already recruited. Do the same thing if you dismiss her and need her again. Note: you may need to wait till the dungeon respawns before doing this again. This may work on xbox, so investigate and post if it does.

HTTPS[edit]

I see you have HTTPS disabled by default. That's a major no-no for making an account and logging in. Also, I seriously appreciate you allowing tor users to edit your wiki. Some websites block all exit nodes. I'm glad you do not. — Unsigned comment by 185.220.102.7 (talk) at 20:19 on 26 May 2018

The wiki has both HTTP and HTTPS available and will generally stick with whichever protocol you access it with. If that's not what you experienced, can you please provide more detail, like which browser and platform you're using, whether you were using the regular or mobile version of the site, and so on. Thanks! Robin Hood  (talk) 00:46, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
I notice that you were using TOR at the time of your edits. I'm not sure why it failed this time—it's possible that the nodes were simply too new and hadn't been updated in the master list yet or that our extension needs updating—but generally speaking, edits coming from TOR nodes will be blocked on this wiki. New quest: "Dragon under Whiterun."[edit]

I don't know when this quest appeared, but I've found a quest associated with the Whiterun well that wasn't there a year ago. (I had to reload "Elder Scrolls" due to disk drive problems.) I could find no reference to this quest on this site.

As I was passing the Whiterun well, I noticed an action popped up to "unlock well." I was curious, so I used the console to get the key and entered the well.

You start out on a bridge deep under Whiterun with a bucket hanging in the middle of the well. You wind around three different areas before encountering an elder dragon. On the way you encounter some new NPC's: Shouting mud crabs, shouting skeevers, and dinosaur people. After killing the dragon you exit back to the well. I got stuck for a while trying to get out of the well, but if you carefully move to the edge of the bridge you will be just barely close enough to the bucket to use "e" to return to Whiterun.

I'm not knowledge enough to write an article up to the standards here, so I hope someone who is will notice this. — Unsigned comment by 50.90.194.224 (talk) at 01:58 on 27 February 2021‎

Dragon Under Whiterun is a mod, so should not have an article, since we don't document mods. Robin Hood(talk) 02:12, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Get started page[edit]

I never saw anything in get started the that regarded how to make a new article. I thought that there would be something that would explain how to make a page. I suggest that a guide to making articles be put on the get started page for newer people (such as myself). This would make it easier to find if there is not a guide already made. If there is a guide, could you put the location on the get stared page.

Cannot edit title page[edit]

I added content to Online:Necrom Furnishing Folio. I used the template from Online:Elsweyr Furnishing Folio to create the contents and achievements required sections. However, there is text under the title page in the Online:Elsweyr Furnishing Folio page that I cannot copy over to the Online:Necrom Furnishing Folio page because there is no edit link for the title section. Even if I click on the edit tab at the top of the page, it does not give me the option to edit the title section. Ideas? Suggestions? — Unsigned comment by SQLBoy (talkcontribs) at 02:28 on 21 August 2024‎

By default, MediaWiki doesn't allow you to edit the top section. I'm sure there's some historical reason for that, but I have no idea what that would be. Many wikis, including ours, have a gadget that overrides that behaviour and puts an edit button on the title as well. To enable it, go to your preferences, click on the "Gadgets" tab and select the "Edit Intro" gadget under "Editing Gadgets". Click on "Save" at the bottom and you should be good to go. If you happen to come across a wiki where that's not available, you have to do it the good old-fashioned way and just edit the whole page for both, copy-pasting only the text you need.
