Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Cremation of Ulmon Vathri[edit]

As you arrive at the temple to complete Armun Ashlands Avenger, you will find that Nalvs has moved from his usual position, and wishes to discuss an urgent matter. He will request that you follow him to the tombs - do so. You will find the corpse of Ulmon Vathri, the old elf to whom you provided consolation during the events of Wellness Check.

Talk to Nalvs about Ulmon Vathri. He will have this to say:

"After I found him, I arranged for his body to be carted here to the Temple. Normally, we would hold a modest cremation ceremony here, and then we would send a portion of his ashes to be interred at Necrom. Unfortunately, there has been an unforeseen complication. You see, Ulmon had no living family in Morrowind, so he generously willed his estate to our Temple. But while I was sorting through his posessions, I found a letter from his estranged daughter. Apparently, she was already on her way to visit him."

Nalvs is concerned that Ulmon's daughter, Felani, is likely to contest Ulmon Vathri's will:

"Perhaps I am too pessimistic. But I find the timing to be highly suspicious. If Felani learns that her father's inheritance is not going to her, but to us, who knows what she might do. I already sent word to our associates in Kragenmoor, and they managed to find Felani as she crossed into Morrowind and directed her here. She and her partner are waiting for us at the Dancing Cup. I will need you to bring them here, but check with Ravur before you go. She was to prepare for their arrival."

Nalvs now instructs you to speak first to Ravur Othravel to prepare, and then to escort Felani to the Andothren temple. However, on approaching Ravur, she will greet you hastily, pass you Ravur's Scrawled Note, and then run away. Read the note to update your journal - it's written as follows:

%PCName meet me in the dormitories do not say a word to Nalvs URGENT

You are able to immediately show the note to Nalvs by talking to him about Ravur Othravel, should you wish. In this instance, he will ask you to keep an eye on Ravur.

Ravur's Story[edit]

Meet Ravur as requested in the dormitories on the Temple's basement floor. She will explain everything:

"I apologize for the cloak-and-dagger, %PCName. You've shown yourself to be a dependable and true follower of Almsivi, so I'll get straight to the point. I'm not at the Andothren Temple for my studies. In fact, I am not a student at all. My commanders in the Order of Doctrine and Ordination sent me to Andothren after receiving reports of unorthodoxy being preached at this Temple by Nalvs Andolin. We decided it was best not to reveal the scope of our investigation, but I am afraid we are out of time."

(Alternatively, if your actions at previous points in the questline have proven disappointing to Ravur, she will acknowledge that bringing you into her plan is a risk, but that she has no other option.)

Ask her about Nalvs Andolin. She has this to say:

"When we arrived here, we found a strange dichotomy in this Temple. It emphasises Almalexia's teachings of charity and care, and the personnel who provide services to the local poor are devoted and well-intentioned. But Nalvs Andolin uses these charitable efforts to extract as many donations as he can from passing pilgrims, the locals, from anyone really, while preaching fervently against the corrupting influence of Imperial fortune. I believe he has ulterior motives, and is defrauding the Temple."

"You see, it seems to me that the amount of money flowing into this Temple's coffers vastly outstrips the meager amount Nalvs is willing to spend on the Temple's charitable mission. I've started to believe that Nalvs is embezzling money, and has probably been doing so for a long time. I haven't yet been able to confirm my suspicions, but this business with Ulmon Vathri's will has only raised them."

"I think Nalvs either coerced or tricked Ulmon Vathri into willing his estate to the Temple, and plans to take personal advantage of it. In any case, before we can bring my suspicions to my superiors, we need proof. Nalvs is careful, so we will need to be as well. If there is anything to find, he will have it locked away in his personal quarters. I will work on a way to enter his quarters, while you go and escort Felani to the Temple."

You can inform Nalvs of these developments by talking to him about Ravur Othravel. He will deny all charges and forbid you from talking to her again.

Go now to escort Ulmon's daughter to her father's body. Felani and her wife are standing outside The Dancing Cup, the drinking establishment on the square east of the temple. Speak to Felani. She has some additional dialogue if her disposition is over 60 and 70, but the only topic that you need to speak to her about is escort. On using it, Felani will ask that you take her to her father's body. Do so. Once she has arrived, your journal will update. Speak to Nalvs, who will ask that you "make yourself scarce" while he conducts the rites, and presumably ensures no awkward questions about the will itself.

Searching for Proof[edit]

It's time to proceed back to Ravur in the dormitories, and ask her about proof.

"I've got this single scroll that will get you past any lock, but we might be better off finding a key to Nalvs' office. Who knows if there are any other locks behind his door that we will need to bypass. The doors in this Temple all use the same locking mechanism, so anyone who has access to the storage area will have a key that also opens Nalvs' door. In any case, you go look for proof, and I will keep a look out and make sure Nalvs doesn't catch you rummaging through his office."

She'll give you a Scroll of Ekash's Lock Splitter to open Nalvs' office door, but you can also find the key to Nalvs' office by speaking to the cook, Sani Edralo or the apothecary, Gadani Pathavel. These individuals will give you the key without question either if they have 95+ disposition with you, or if you chose to purchase better quality food in Kitchen Supplies (Sani Edralo)/did not use any of Gadani's potions in Andothren Charity (Gadani Pathavel).

Nalvs' office is on the same level as the dormitory, behind a level 60 locked door. There are two documents on his desk - one a Response from D.D., implying that Nalvs is paying tribute to somebody, and is being characteristically miserly about it, and the other, Ulmon Vathri's Will, granting Nalvs sole custody of Ulmon Vathri's estate. A crumpled up version on the floor by the desk implies that Nalvs was writing these wills himself.

Check behind the copy of Saryoni's Sermons for a button, and press it. This will open a secret compartment in the room containing the Temple's empty coffer (you can use the Scroll of Ekash's Lock Splitter to open this). There is also the key to the Vathri house, and a letter from Felani to her father. Take both, and then return to Ravur to report on your proof.

"The Temple coffers are empty? Completely empty? Are you sure? That must mean... Nalvs is even more brazen than I feared. He must have hidden all the Temple's funds some place else already. B'vek, that's bad news. But we can't confront him, not while there's a cremation ceremony going on, and not in front of our guests. Let's see what Nalvs' next move is. The cremation ceremony should have concluded by now. Go see whether they need us."

Return to Nalvs Andolin in the tomb area. Nalvs will ask you to speak to Felani, and then escort her and her partner back to the Dancing Cup. Do so (use the term escort to get Felani to follow). You need only leave the temple with them, and they will find their own way. Return immediately to Ravur.

The Final Showdown[edit]

Ravur is waiting in the entrance chamber, and has some bad news about Nalvs:

"After you left, he returned to his quarters, then immediately came out, told the staff he had to take care of Ulmon Vathri's effects, and recalled away! We cannot wait any longer, and we must confront him, now. If he did indeed go to Ulmon Vathri's house, you need to go there immediately, before he slips further away. I need to get my gear, but I'll be right behind you. Hurry to Omaynis, %PCName, and apprehend Nalvs!"

This part of the quest is timed. If you take too long getting to Ulmon's house in Omaynis, Ravur will beat you to it, and you will miss this portion of the quest. Instead, either walk to Omaynis or take the silt strider from Andothren, and enter Ulmon Vathri's house. It's time to confront Nalvs once and for all. He's on the bottom floor, surrounded by gold bars, and extremely defensive. Ask him about defrauding the temple to receive the following exchange:

"Preposterous! I would never. I have dedicated my life to the Temple and the Tribunal. The sanctity of our Temple and the funds entrusted to us are beyond question, and to insinuate I would act in contravention of my duties is deeply insulting!"

"Do you expect me to believe that all of these riches belonged to Ulmon Vathri? He had nothing of the sort."

"Yes... I mean... The insinuations you are making, against your superior, are grave offenses in and of themselves and cause for immediate expulsion from the Temple. Be very careful with what you say, %PCRank. You would dare accuse me of stealing from the Temple?"

"I would. Ravur and I checked your offices. She is with the Order of Doctrine, and we have proof."

"Damn that Ravur Othravel. I knew that would-be-novice was no good the moment she stepped into my Temple. I thought I had shaken the Ordinators when Galdar left, but they're sneakier than people give them credit for. Fine. You caught me. But I assure you I have a good reason for doing what I did. I'm sure you will see sense, see my side of the story. You have to. I have taken nothing I haven't deserved."

"So you admit it. Why did you betray the trust of the Tribunal?"

"Betray their trust? I toiled, for decades, just to serve them, and the people of Andothren. Scraped together what we could just to feed ungrateful mouths. Like babes clinging to Lady Almalexia's teats, the poor and wretched suck us dry. But I did my duties, without complaining. And what did I get for it in return? Nothing! Our gods have abandoned us, they have retreated into their palaces, with no regard for our service. No, %PCRank, we will not be rewarded, we will need to claim our fortune ourselves."

"And what were you planning, once you had grasped your fortune?"

"To retire, comfortably and quietly. I would sell this house, and take these riches that I have earned and should have been given. And I would move somewhere far away. I deserve that at least, after a lifetime of devoted service. But you and Ravur have put a stop to that now. Still, that doesn't mean we need to involve the Ordinators, do we, %PCName?"

"The Order of Doctrine has been investigating you from the start, and Ravur Othravel will be right along to bring you to justice."

"I can't be caught by the Ordinators. They will do terrible things to me, %PCRank %PCName. They will take my hands and my feet and burn me on a pyre. But you remember the teachings of mercy of our Lady Almalexia, don't you? Surely I don't deserve whatever the Ordinators will do to me? Tell you what, you can share in these riches. After all, you too deserve to be rewarded for diligently doing your duties? Here, take this, please. An advance. And then let us discuss what you can do to help me."

It's at this point that Nalvs will attempt to buy your loyalty, with 100 gold as an advance, and the promise of everything else in the room if you kill Ravur Othreleth.

Ravur will enter at the end of your exchange to arrest Nalvs. Speak to her, and she will proclaim the arrest:

"Good job, serjo %PCName. It is clear beyond any doubt what Nalvs Andolin has done. Now, Nalvs Andolin, Master of the Andothren Temple. On my eyes, this is a grave image of injustice, indeed. By the power vested in me as a member of the Order of Doctrine and Ordination, I shall speak the words of justice, and I call on you to lay down your arms and surrender yourself to mercy." - Ravur Othreleth

"I'd rather die here than be tortured, or stuck in a fire by you Ordinators!" - Nalvs Andolin

Ravur and Nalvs will now enter combat, and Ravur will normally carry the fight. Nonetheless, to ensure the victor of your choice, you are advised to intervene.

Nalvs' Route[edit]

If you intervene on Nalvs' side, you will need to kill Ravur. Nalvs, relieved, will pledge to return to his old life, leaving you the wealth within the house:

"Thank you for leaving me with my life, %PCName. As promised, everything here is yours. I will be going back to the Temple in Andothren, and I will make sure the Order of Doctrine and Ordination will not hear a word of what transpired here. Ravur Othravel, bless her soul, will resign from her Order and go on a long holiday to Black Marsh, never to return."

Nalvs will then return to the Andothren temple, and you may speak to him to close out the quest. He will wish to discuss Ulmon Vathri's will:

"I suppose I have no choice but to return Ulmon Vathri's house and possessions to Felani. We can't have her asking too many questions. Best to just let this one go. Tell her she can have the house, and her father's things. If it helps, I have a letter from her father, that he never did send to her. Give it to her, it might placate her. Then let us never speak of anything that happened here, again."

Seek out Felani as instructed. She's inside the Dancing Cup. Talk to her about Ulmon Vathri's will, and then Ulmon Vathri. Felani will be deeply happy at receiving this letter, and will reward you with a Compass. Return to Nalvs once ready to complete the quest.

Ravur's Route[edit]

If you support Ravur in the execution of Nalvs Andolin, she will express surprise and disappointment over how things ended:

"I hadn't expected Nalvs to refuse to surrender. A pity, I would have preferred it if he had come willingly to stand trial in Almalexia. Nevertheless, proof of his crime is abundant. Clearly, these treasures here were taken from the Andothren Temple. Please, collect them, and report back to me."

There is well over 1000+ gold scattered across the room (an amount that varies depending on what you gathered for Nalvs over the course of the questline), a large assortment of gems in the velothi coffer, and two gold bars on the bed. Nalvs also carries the Staff of Forked Tongues - a princely glass staff. Be sure also to take Ulmon's Unsent Letter from his corpse to unlock some additional dialogue later.

Once you have emptied the chest by the staircase, you will be able to speak to Ravur:

"Thank you for your service to our Temple, %PCName. Alas, it is impossible to tell what portion of these funds was misappropriated by Nalvs, or extorted from the people of Andothren. I will take 2000 gold, to re-fill the Temple's coffers and allow for the charitable work in Andothren to continue. In fact, without Nalvs' greed, I'm sure we will be able to provide far better support to the community even with fewer funds. The rest is yours. Consider it a reward for good work. I'll see you back in Andothren."

Return now to Andothren's temple, and speak to Ravur once more. She has taken over Nalvs' duties for the time being, and will wish to discuss the final settlement of Ulmon Vathri's will:

"With Nalvs Andolin's death, we might never know definitively whether he manipulated Ulmon Vathri or not. Still, it would not be right for us to take his inheritance. I will see to it that Ulmon Vathri's will is declared invalid, and that his house and meager possessions go to Felani instead of our Temple. We have no need for it, regardless. I think she is still at the Dancing Cup. Go bring her the good news. That should be the end of this Temple's former Master's manipulations. As for Nalvs Andolin..."

"It is a shame things went the way they did. Still, I feel no remorse. His resistance proves his guilt beyond a doubt. Now, for this Temple, I will remain here and take on the duties of its Master, until a permanent replacement is found. As for you, my Order owes you a great debt. You have been instrumental in bringing this crooked priest to justice. Please, accept my blade as a token of my thanks."

Go now to the Dancing Cup. Inside you will find Felani Iannus. Speak to her about Ulmon Vathri's will, and then (assuming you took the unsent letter from Nalvs' corpse), Ulmon Vathri. A tearful Felani, now with a little more closure, will reward you with a Compass in thanks, bringing an end to the quest.

Notes[edit]

  • While not strictly speaking a Temple quest, asking either Nalvs or Ravur for duties after this point will see them refer you to a cursed Indoril artifact recently dug up in Etana Egg Mine - this is the lead-in to the quest, Remnants of Resdayn.

20 I am to go to the Dancing Cup to escort Ulmon Vathri's estranged daughter and her partner to the cremation ceremony. First, however, I should check with Ravur Othravel to see if she needs anything to prepare for their arrival.
25 I found Felani outside the Dancing Cup. I should escort her to the Temple tombs so Ulmon Vathri's cremation ceremony can begin.
30 I have escorted Felani to the Temple tomb.

45 Felani and Marja are headed back to the Dancing Cup. I should find Ravur and see what the next step of her plan is.
50 It has been decided that Ulmon Vathri's house and possessions should pass to his daughter Felani. I should bring her the good news at the Dancing Cup.
55 While Felani was grateful, she mentioned she only wished she had reconnected with Ulmon Vathri before his death.
60 Finishes quest☑ Ulmon Vathri's unsent letter gave Felani a large measure of closure. She and Marja are set to move to Omaynis, unburdened by the past. She gave me a small keepsake as a sign of her gratitude.
200 Finishes quest☑ Both Ravur Othravel and Nalvs Andolin are dead.
The Last Will and Testament of Ulmon Vathri (TR_m4_TT_LastWillAndTestament_b)
10 Ravur covertly slipped me a note and ran upstairs.
15 The little note Ravur passed me says to meet her upstairs, but not to talk to Nalvs. I wonder what she's up to.
20 Ravur told me she is an undercover member of the Ordinators of Doctrine. She mistrusts Nalvs and was sent to spy on him.
25 Ravur outlined her suspicions of Nalvs. She thinks he is trying to rake in as many donations as possible, embezzling money, and is working towards defrauding the Temple. She suspects that he manipulated Ulmon into signing over his possessions to the Temple.
30 I am to find Felani and her partner at the Dancing Cup while Ravur works on a way to covertly enter Nalvs' quarters so we can search for proof of his efforts at defrauding the Temple.
35 Ravur gave me a Scroll of Ekash's Lock Splitter, but suggested I try to find a key to Nalvs' quarters in case there are any other locks that would require magic to bypass. The doors all use the same mechanism, so anyone with access to the storage area would have a key that unlocks Nalvs' office.
55 Ravur was distressed that all the contents of the Temple coffers had been removed before we searched Nalvs' office. She suggests we wait to see what Nalvs' next move is.
60 Nalvs Andolin has left the Andothren Temple in a hurry. Ravur thinks he is making a run for it. Perhaps he went to Ulmon Vathri's house. I am to go there and confront him. Ravur needs to collect her gear, and said she would be right behind me.
65 I have found Nalvs Andolin in Ulmon Vathri's house, among chests full of riches taken from the Andothren Temple.
66 I arrived late to Ulmon Vathri's house in Omaynis.
70 Nalvs Andolin attempted to convince me not to hand him over to the Ordinators.
71 Ravur Othravel joined me in Omaynis, and attempted to arrest Nalvs Andolin.
75 Nalvs Andolin attacked Ravur Othravel, and died in the ensuing fight.
80 Ravur told me to collect the fortune Nalvs Andolin absconded from the Temple with, and return it to her.
85 Ravur Othravel allowed me to keep most of the gold and riches that Nalvs had taken, on account of not being able to trace back where they came from even if she wanted to. The Temple hardly needs the extravagance, and will be able to provide services to the poor with less now that Nalvs is no longer hoarding fortune. I am to meet her in Andothren once I am ready.
86 All that is left now is to settle the matter of Ulmon Vathri's will.
100 With Nalvs Andolin's death and disgrace, Ravur Othravel will assume the position of Master of the Andothren Temple, for the time being. She thanked me for my work, and gave me her dagger as reward for my services.
The Last Will and Testament of Ulmon Vathri (TR_m4_TT_LastWillAndTestament_c)
10 I showed Nalvs the note Ravur gave me, and he told me to keep an eye on her.
20 Nalvs Andolin denies defrauding the Temple and forbade me from speaking to Ravur Othravel again.
75 Nalvs Andolin attacked Ravur Othravel, and killed her.
80 Nalvs Andolin thanked me for not helping Ravur Othravel apprehend him.
100 Nalvs decided to return Ulmon Vathri's inheritance to Felani, and asked that he and I never speak of the matter again.
The Last Will and Testament of Ulmon Vathri (TR_m4_TT_LastWillAndTestament_d)
10 I obtained a key to the Andothren Temple. It should open the door to Nalvs' office.
The Last Will and Testament of Ulmon Vathri (TR_m4_TT_LastWillAndTestament_e)
10 I found an unsent letter written by Ulmon Vathri, addressed to his daughter. She will be interested to see its contents.
50 The Temple coffers in Nalvs' office are empty.
