No quest[edit]

I got the dragon claw from Birna, but never saw the quest in my journal. I've cleared the barrow and killed the boss, still no mention in my journal. Peterguard 08:47, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that's normal. This quest has (for unknown reasons) no journal entries at all. It is a quest in the sense that you can see some of the stages on the PC in the console (sqs dunYngolBarrowQST) and the quest name can be found in the game data. --Alfwyn (talk) 10:58, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

Inaccurate?[edit]

The page says "Reading through the book reveals that the Barrow is the final resting place of Ysgramor's kinsman Yngol, who was killed by Sea-Ghosts during Ysgramor's very first venture into Tamriel." However, the book does not specify that this was their first time coming to Skyrim from Atmora. Furthermore, Ysgramor's Lore page states "During his voyage to Tamriel with his Five Hundred Companions, Ysgramor lost his son Yngol to the 'sea-ghosts.'" On that same page, it says that Ysgramor and his two sons (one of them being Yngol) had fled Saarthal on the Night of Tears and had gone back to Atmora to gather the Five Hundred Companions, which suggests that the trip on which Yngol was lost at sea was not their first venture into Skyrim/Tamriel. I think this page should be corrected. Who's with me? Oh, and sorry for nit-picking. Username12345 (talk) 09:55, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

I can confirm your observation after having read Songs of the Return, Volume 2: The First Tale of the Darumzu, so I changed it. There might be better ways of wording it though, but I leave that to native English speakers. —MortenOSlash (talk) 08:25, 18 September 2012 (GMT)
Your wording looks good to me. Thanks for taking care of that.Username12345 (talk) 05:27, 19 September 2012 (GMT)

No way of starting the quest after doing Dungeon Delving in Yngol Barrow?[edit]

Are there no in game ways (i.e. without console commands) of doing the Yngol's Barrow quest if the Dungeon Delving for the Helm of Winterhold has been given? —MortenOSlash (talk) 16:51, 17 September 2012 (GMT)

Note?[edit]

Should we add a note pointing out that there are exactly 0 enemies in this ruin besides the boss? It seems like something that people might wanna know before they go dungeon diving. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 08:23, 18 September 2012 (GMT)

It would be helpful, I guess, but should it be both on the quest page and the location page? —MortenOSlash (talk) 08:29, 18 September 2012 (GMT)
Quest Page? Didn't know there was one rofl, yeah probably on both. Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 08:30, 18 September 2012 (GMT)
Wow just noticed this talk is on the quest page... well not surprised seeing as the quest and location pages have near identical names and links... another thing that might need a minor tweak... Lord Eydvar Talk | Contribs 08:32, 18 September 2012 (GMT)

Yngol Shade/Dragon Priest connected to Pillar Puzzle[edit]

I got sent here by Urag the librarian in CoW, and I had already bought the Coral Claw from Birna. I solved the rotating pillar puzzle without sitting on the throne in the puzzle room, and had an unnamed Dragon Priest spawn in the final room. (Oddly, this Priest was completely unarmed, he didn't have a Dragon Priest Dagger or a Staff in his inventory.)

I reloaded an earlier Save and solved the pillar puzzle again, and this time I sat on the throne as one of the puzzle-solving steps. After doing this, Yngol's Shade spawned in the final room. I reloaded and tried this dungeon four more times, twice with the throne and twice without. The two throne uses continued to spawn Yngol's Shade, while not using the throne produced an unarmed Dragon Priest both times. I know it's a very small sample size, and these results could be mere coincidence, but I think it might have some truth to it.

To be clear, using or not using the throne in the puzzle room has no effect on opening the gate in that room. It opens either way. The throne does seem to decide which "Boss" will spawn in the final room. If you need Yngol's Shade to spawn for the sake of getting his unique enchanted helmet, it seems like sitting on the throne is the way to go.

There's a bit of further evidence that using/not using the throne in the puzzle room has an effect on how the rest of the dungeon behaves. There are three nearly-hidden and easy-to-miss Draugr in the dungeon: one behind an upright crypt lid that's only open a small amount, one half-buried under a rockfall, and one in a niche obscured by an abundance of Hanging Moss. On those run-throughs when the throne was used in the pillar puzzle room, these three particular dead Draugr contained both Coins and random low-level armour/weapons. On play-throughs without using the throne, these three particular Draugr contained Coins only. Evil-i (talk) 22:51, 9 October 2012 (GMT)

If this really were true, I'm sure editors with the creation kit would have confirmed a long time ago. The fact the article does not mention the "throne connection" probably means your results were coincidental and nothing more. CapnZapp (talk) 20:11, 10 December 2012 (GMT)

Did not buy Claw - Claw was in the Barrow[edit]

I did not buy the Coral Dragon Claw from Birna, instead I found it on the pistole just inside the gate. Additionally, did over hear the conversation between Birna and Ranmir, but may have entered a door before it completed. Despite the fact that I entered Yngol's Barrow while not on the quest I did find the Song Of Hrormir in the boss chest. The Song Of Hrormir page states it is only present in the Yngol's Barrow boss chest as part of the quest Yngol's Barrow. I found this to be inaccurate. — Unsigned comment by 98.165.234.207 (talk) at 12:13 on 24 November 2012‎

No you technically did do the quest. The entire Yngol's Barrow quest is unmarked and starts the moment you either buy the claw OR enter the ruin. If you didn't buy the claw it will be found on the pedestal in the first room of Yngol Barrow. Lord Eydvar Talk|Contribs 12:28, 24 November 2012 (GMT)
I did some tests with the console, if not buying the claw, the quest starts when entering the room with Yngol's Shade and the boss chest. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:06, 24 November 2012 (GMT)
So the quest does NOT start when you enter the ruin or when you pick up the claw? When does the quest end? Seconds after it starts (when you have killed the Shade?). Or when you pick up the Helm of Yngol? Or, perchance, do you need (=were you meant) to show the Helm to Birne....? CapnZapp (talk) 20:08, 10 December 2012 (GMT)

multiple details[edit]

Okay, so I have a few nitpicks:

1) if this quest never displays, this needs to be made much more clear (tell the reader in a more prominent way)
2) the text claims there are quest objectives (though never shown). But what are these quest objectives exactly, in detail?
3) Birna is left completely hanging. Her final piece of dialogue "if you find something be sure to tell me" (AFAIR) is curiously missing in this article. Was there ever intended some closure (by, I guess, showing Birna the helm of Yngol)?
4) As I understand it, the barrow can contain either of two helms. Either Helm of Winterhold, if you have the related quest active, and Helm of Yngol if not. Is this correct? Specifically: if I have never talked to Birna and finds the Coral Claw by myself, will the Helm of Yngol be there? Can there ever be both helms at the same time?
5) And talking about the Coral Claw. Where exactly will you find it (if Birna didn't give it to you)? The text currently tells you it can be found not where you should look for it but where you use it. To me this is backwards and non-intuitive (regardless of how in-your-face the claw will be found) - any item that can be found should be described when the walk-through reaches its spot in the description.
6) The back door isn't described in sufficient detail. Can you find and open it without having gone through the barrow? How will that affect the quest? And please add a description of a curious detail: how the spiral staircase just before the exit door continues upward, but where on the outside (in the outdoors) there is just a flat rock?

CapnZapp (talk) 20:02, 10 December 2012 (GMT)

1) It clearly says; “This quest does not appear in your journal” and it is in the Non-Journal Quests category.
2) There are no quest objectives in-game, so there’s no need to list them.
3) Who knows? That’s why she was left hanging.
4) Try and test it yourself, then add the info to the article.
5) (see #4)
6) (see #4 and #5)
--Krusty (talk) 21:57, 10 December 2012 (GMT)
1+2) No, I'm talking about the section headers (of the article) and the Creation Kit. Are there hidden info? Then I'd like to know about it in order to compare to the section headers and/or if there's any morsel of trivia info to be found regarding this quest and its NPCs. Thanks. (I do not feel confident to muck about in a CK myself)
3) No again you misunderstand. I am asking the readership of this talk page if anyone with the CK has seen anything related to the end of this (non-)quest (that would be valuable to add to the article). And I am asking (previous editors) if there is any reason why the final words of Birna aren't included (since they fairly obviously set up a traditional "end of quest by returning to the quest giver" thing)
4+5+6) Thanks but that is clearly not helpful. The reason I am asking here is to check if somebody else have already done this, not to get your permission to do the work myself... (Hint: Feel free to not respond at all when you have nothing to contribute, Krusty. Thank you.)
Anyone else? Cheers CapnZapp (talk) 17:39, 11 December 2012 (GMT)
1) As said, there's a notice in the quick walkthrough.
2) Objective 0: Explore Yngol's Barrow
Objective 50: Escape Yngol's Barrow
3) No idea, nothing I can see in the CK, etc. Seems generic enough. "You going to investigate the haunted house? Tell me if something snazzy happens." Just general interest, she doesn't really want anything from the barrow, just making idle chatter.
4) The Helm of Yngol is always on the skeleton. The Helm of Winterhold is a container-only item that would be in the chest by the skeleton.
5) It's right in front of the puzzle door. Literally right in front of it.
6) From my understanding you can enter through this back door, but there's a barred door at the bottom of the stairs that you won't be able to get through. As for the stairs going upwards, they do extend too far to be covered by that small amount of rocks, but nothing's perfect. Little mistakes.
Additionally, please do not tell an editor not to reply when they are making an attempt to contribute. Remember to be polite and not snarky. Thanks. Vely►t►e 18:20, 11 December 2012 (GMT)

Book missing at entrance?[edit]

If I read correctly, at the entrance of the barrow (on the altar outside?) there were to be a few ingredients and the book Yngol and the Sea-Ghosts. I found a salt pile & piece of raw meat, but no book. Also, on the book's own page, there are several locations listed to find the book, but Yngol's Barrow was not one of them. Am I missing something, or is the book there sometimes or under certain conditions? Also, I bought the claw before I got to the barrow, in case that may be a factor. Otherwise the rest of the quest went as expected.

Oh, almost forgot one other oddity, the boss's inventory was completely empty. Anybody else find the book missing or a boss with no inventory? — Unsigned comment by Fgoron2000 (talkcontribs) at 14:02 on 2 September 2013

That is definitely a guaranteed location for the book, so it may have fallen somewhere inaccessible due to actions nearby. The book page doesn't have all the locations listed at this point (there are over 35 in the base game alone). — ABCface 16:56, 2 September 2013 (GMT)

oops again[edit]

Once again I messed something up and SOLD the claw. Now I cant move forward and it isn't on the pedestal. I also can't go back and get it cause I have done too much to even think of redoing for a helmet. Fyjorki (talk) 11:49, 22 January 2014 (GMT) Fyjorki

You may be able to buy it back if you can figure out where you sold it. I've noticed that at some point, merchants started keeping important equipment for inordinate amounts of time, even when the rest of their inventory respawns. Failing that, there are a number of workarounds using the Console, if you're on a PC. Probably the simplest thing is to use tcl to walk through the door. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:45, 22 January 2014 (GMT)
Thanks for the tip but im on xbox. hopefully youre right about them keeping the items, but if that was the case I would have gotten back my dragon mask. btw, don't know why I didn't log in earlier. Fyjorki (talk) 11:49, 22 January 2014 (GMT) Fyjorki

Quest name[edit]

In the Creation Kit, FreeformWinterholdA is titled "A Bad Trade," and dunYngolBarrowQST is titled "Yngol's Barrow." They have different objectives: FreeformWinterholdA has "Place the burial urn in Yngol Barrow," and dunYngolBarrowQST has "Explore Yngol's Barrow" and "Escape Yngol's Barrow." They also have different quest stage numbers: FreeformWinterholdA has 0, 10, 20, and 30 (all empty), while dunYngolBarrowQST has 10, 15, 49, 50, and 100 (also empty). This would lead me to believe that the two quests are indeed entirely separate quests, however on this article when the ID of the quest is mentioned, you include both. Shouldn't the FreeformWinterholdA ID be placed solely on the A Bad Trade quest page, since they are different quests? TundraCactus (talk) 02:14, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

That was an edit last year that slipped through the cracks and nobody noticed until now. I've reverted the page to before the edits, since FreeformWinterholdA is already documented on our Unfinished Quests page. Thanks! Robin Hood  (talk) 04:55, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Any explanation for the blue orbs?[edit]

I don't recall seeing such orbs anywhere else, I feel like there ought to be an explanation of them somewhere (whether lore or mechanics), but I haven't seen anything in game and see nothing here beyond noting their existence.

I note that they disappear when you pick up Yngol's helm. This is mentioned in the location page (Skyrim:Yngol Barrow) but not on this quest page. Hv (talk) 23:08, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

It's a mystery. —Legoless (talk) 09:35, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
