finish after killing priest[edit]

Does anyone know if the quest finishes after you kill the priest or if you need to go back to the shopkeeper? im going to bed so ill check in the morning(or afternoon), night! (I plead LazynessEddie The Head 16:46, 2 October 2011 (UTC))

No info so far. I assume that you can give the claw back to the merchant rather than using it on the door, but we won't be able to confirm that until release (or if someone discovers it in a demo, which is unlikely). --Legoless 17:03, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Turns out you can't give him the claw until you use it on the door. Kremlin16 21:19, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Main Quest?[edit]

I can't see how this quest could be part of the MQ. Apart from starting in the village nearest the tutorial dungeon, and perhaps the player discovering Word Walls, it looks to be just a standard miscellaneous quest. --Legoless 17:09, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

I agree, the main quest starts with you going to talk to Hod in riverwood after he saved you and then going to meet Esbern of the blades and climbing the Throat of the World.Bethesda probably chose this quest to show off word walls, dragons, a variety of dungeon types etc. RIM 18:14, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I was assuming that since it leads the player to the first Word Wall it was part of the main quest. But on the other hand, the fact that Bethesda's been generally pretty secretive about the main quest would suggest that it's not MQ. --NepheleTalk 18:30, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Also it was not the first word wall, look at all the Dragon Shouts the player uses in the demo! Anyway, it's not a very big deal in any case, a lot of info is probably going to be incorrect right now. RIM 20:18, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I've gone ahead and removed it. --NepheleTalk 21:03, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

() I've created a redirect to this article at Skyrim:Bleak Falls Barrow (quest), as it seems likely that they are the same quest (or at least related). This also supports the theory that it's a part of the Main Quest, so perhaps the templates should be put back. --Legoless 19:01, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

The templates probably should be put back for now but it is possible that they are seperate quests, for example in Oblivion in the Fighter's Guild quest where you have to kill the thieves with Maglir there was also another quest called "Newheim's Flagon" where you had to get back Newheims's beer cup. They were interrelated and took part in the same area but were different quests.RIM 15:52, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Ultimately it's a question (one of many such questions) that we're not going to be able to settle until the game comes out. Furthermore, in the absence of more information, it's not even possible to properly set up the pages. If they really are just one quest, then either the quest name 'The Golden Claw' or the quest name 'Bleak Falls Barrow' needs to be deleted, and any changes short of making that change leaves the quests in an incomplete state. Given that we've seen both names used as quest names, I don't think we should delete either quest name.
In my opinion, the only useful things that can be accomplished right now are (a) to identify this as a question to check as soon as possible once we have a copy of the game; and (b) to make sure the discussion page describes the problem in case any early-game-players come across the page and wonder why it contains errors. I think we've done all we can on both of those fronts.
Continuing to fiddle with the pages really just makes things worse than better. I think we should just leave things as is until we have some more substantial information.--NepheleTalk 00:14, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
At this point, I think it's very unlikely that the Golden Claw is part of the main quest. Multiple previewers have reported that they were given this quest and were able to complete it. However, we know that Bethesda disabled the main quest in the previews, and actively prevented previewers from going near any places that were critical to the main quest. Therefore, I think we need to separate the Golden Claw and Bleak Falls Barrows back into two separate quests. --NepheleTalk 01:19, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, now that more or less know what happens in Unbound, I don't see a way for these two quests to logically flow into one another. Of course, we're still missing a lot of information. But I think it's safe to say that this isn't what happens next. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 01:36, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

() It's been confirmed that the "Bleak Falls Barrow" section of the main quest and the Golden Claw side quest are separate. Might as well keep the redirect for now, until someone expands it. --Legoless 21:23, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Do we have any proof its arvel? ive always assumed its just some random enemy. (I plead LazynessEddie The Head 04:16, 3 October 2011 (UTC))

One early video I saw had Todd Howard following him right from the web to the moment he was killed. It's definitely Arvel. rpeh •TCE 08:20, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

starting the quest[edit]

From what i took of the gameplay trailers, todd listened to half the conversation, then killed them and the quest didnt start until he moved further in the dungeon, so should it be "Overheard from bandits during Bleak Falls Barrow quest" or "entering bleak falls barrows?" (Eddie The Head 10:03, 2 November 2011 (UTC))

You can talk to lucas or his sister in riverwood or you can go into the dungeon. There are more than one ways to start the quest.RIM 10:26, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
We're not going to be able to get this 100% accurate until we get the game. Let's not worry too much about it for now. rpeh •TCE 11:24, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

I have currently completed the quest up to the point where I have to turn the claw in to Lucan, but there is no option to do so. I believe the completion part of this is broken128.61.92.17 05:15, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Ctdemonet

Wordwall Room Creature in Coffin[edit]

I found while playing that the creature in the Coffin is level dependent. At level 3 I ran into a Skyrim:Draugr Overlord where as we've also seen the Skyrim:Dragon Priest. I was hoping to start a list of levels others might have seen coming out of this coffin to keep record. Knoxx 15:11, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

Is it sure, like also mentioned in Skyrim:The_Golden_Claw#Find_the_Secret_of_Bleak_Falls_Barrow, that there could be a Dragon Priest? CK only shows Draugr actors, one boss.

Consequences and Advice[edit]

In the section Retrieving_the_Claw the author advises the player to kill Arvel the Swift. I have noted on several runs through that he will meet his end on his own without the player resorting to murder. Also the presence of the Skill Book Thief leads me to believe one should be able to pickpocket the claw as well.

The significance of Murder in the game is probably only important to a dedicated roleplayer who wants to remain as good as possible, but that has not been proven as far as I know.--Sativarg 16:55, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Also questionable is the broken lever mentioned in 2.2 Retrieving the Claw. It is, I believe, actually booby trapped with darts. In my game, a bandit can be seen getting darted for using the wrong combination when activating the trap.--Sativarg 17:01, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Unable to Move Past Stage 30[edit]

Accepted the quest to retrieve the claw from the shop owner, but the conversation where his sister leads you to the edge of town never happened. Upon retrieving the claw it acts as if i've never begun the quest, and when returning to the shop, I have no capacity to return the claw to them, or "look for the owner". I of course finished the dungeon. Strange bug, maybe update the bugs section of the page? — Unsigned comment by (talk)

well, before it gets added lets see if anyone else has had this bug, i just took a look at the bugs section, try reading Arvels journal and seeing if that lets you give it to them, if not, i doubt theres anything else, if you really want the quest out of your journal, you will have to kill Camila and Lucan, but thats not that smart. (Eddie The Head 11:56, 2 December 2011 (UTC))

This is a normal quest in the journal it was not under miscelleous— Unsigned comment by (talk) at 00:33 on 19 December 2011

Arvel's Death[edit]

I've noticed the article says that Arvel dies killing draugr, but one of the times I played through it, I helped him kill the Draugr to see what would happen. He was obviously scripted afterwards to walk on the pressure plate and got killed by the spike wall. Shouldn't this be mentioned? 22:53, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Yes you're right, I'll add that now.RIM 23:01, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

Transclude / Link / Whatever to Bleak Falls Barrow (or vice versa)[edit]

I've just waded through the walkthrough for BFB: it's much more detailed than this one, but both have/had errors and omissions that are sometimes correct/present on the other, and maintaining two copies of what is essentially a single quest is never going to work well. If someone could wiki-fu it so we only need to worry about one of them, that'd be great. Aliana 10:41, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

even better: there are *3* copies. I updated the one on BFB(place) - I didn't understand WHY a place page had a full quest walkthrough, but it was the most recently active one of the three, so I just ran with it. Aliana 01:32, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Okay, based on how Oblivion deals with Miscarcand, I'm going to try and merge all three: (place) IS where the "real" walkthrough belongs apparently, and the quest pages should simply link to that at the appropriate point and focus on getting the quest, the reward, the journal entries, and so on. Aliana 18:54, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Incorrect Stage Numbers?[edit]

In a recent playthrough, I tried to use the console to advance this quest, and "setstage ms13 40" only advanced it to the objective "find the secret of bleak falls barrow", and "setstage ms13 60" advanced it to "bring the claw to lucan". Is it possible that the stages have changed? — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 12:39 on 10 February 2012

Those are the correct numbers associated with each of the quest objectives. The issue has more to do with the quest objectives being only loosely connected to the quest stages -- they share the same numbering system, but the objectives are listed separately from the stages in the game data and in the CK. My best guess is that the developers set them as two parallel types of quest-status tracking devices so that "telling you where to go" can be done separately from any other details of quest updates. For example, in the Golden Claw, some of the "empty" stages after stage 40 are used by the game to track that you've used the claw to open the puzzle door and that you've triggered the word wall -- but they don't want a new objective to flash on your screen for each of those events.
However, this is also probably the single biggest area where having the CK will now help us to understand things better, because for the first time with the CK we're able to see the scripts associated with the quests. We may end up wanting to document the quest stages differently, because seeing the quest scripts it's apparent that the objectives are manually assigned, so the numbering systems for the stages and objectives may turn out to be coincidentally similar rather truly the same. First, however, I need to go hunting one last time to see whether I can find the source of the script text being displayed by the CK. --NepheleTalk 23:12, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Neph: I can only guess, cuz I still haven't found the time to look at the CK wiki, but if you look at the scripting for stage 40, for example, you'll see SetObjectiveDisplayed(30, 1). This suggests that the objective being displayed is now independent of the quest stage...just to make your life fun. ;) Robin Hoodtalk 00:41, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Unfinished possibility branch[edit]

Before going to Whiterun, you will usually be offered a reward from the trader in Riverwood for the golden claw, not knowing about the dragonstone. But if you go get the claw and bring it back before opening the "claw door" Lucan and his sister won't have a dialog option for the claw, and it won't even show up in their barter menus. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 03:58 on 18 February 2012
