Make it through safely - Farkas sometimes is no help[edit]

Actually, I have a small problem here. I'm level 48 and in the first room I meet three Draugr Death Lords who basically one-hit-kill Meeko (whom I brought along) and Farkas, so sometimes player action is the key. --Ulkomaalainen 18:23, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

I had the same problem on level 25 (although, no dog). As a workaround for me this time though, at level 69, I had Delphine, Esbern and two summoned Dremora Lords doing the fighting, so I mainly just waited and sometimes healed Farkas.
Farkas is completely useless in this quest and I sure hope they all aren't as useless in the future or I won't do a thing with them (they all seem like a bunch of 'IQ-fish sticks' to me (no bran, no pain), so I'm not so sure I want to be a part of their silly little group anyway). :P Tockenen 07:58, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
He's uniquely extra-broken because he's a Trainer, so he levels in a custom class instead of a normal combat one, and his is a wreck. The rest of them are thankfully much less so, although at least one more has major issues (Aela, wrong armor skill). Aliana 14:08, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, Aliana, very good to know. I started all over again and tried not to pass level 5, but then they (Farkas, first job) wanted to send me to fight Forsworns (instead of the "usual" Browl-errands) so I knew I wouldn't stand a chance. LOL
Anyway, thank you very much for the information. I will probably use Delphine and Esbern again (atm on level 45)

When Radiant does stupid things like that, just reload the autosave from entering Jorrvaskr and try again. I just did this quest at level 7, and it was tons of fun: a completely different experience. Aliana 01:00, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
I have to say that Farkas fought bravely. I made this at level 42 with expert difficulty settings and at level 22 with master difficulty. I never suspected there was anything wrong with him. He was at his knee but the fight was severe. We were badly outnumbered. This was a very entertaining quest, especially at level 22 with master difficulty settings. I did not have Dremora Lord yet to help me and had to beat hordes of Draugr with just Flame Atronachs. This lasted ages. I pressed tab key several times to rest. Maybe they fixed Farkas, because I just went through on lvl 50 and had a similar experience to you, (except with one Dremora). He was even surrounded and shouted at by three Deathlords on one occasion. He would have fallen to his knees on about 4 occasions, twice in the final battle, (which is understandable, since I was using the Draugr as pincushions and he was at the pointy end). I did bother to heal him once or twice, so probably prevented a couple of falls, but given the overall number of attackers in this cairn, I think he fared quite well. — Unsigned comment by 124.148.234.45 (talk) at 12:28 on 28 August 2012
Near 4 years on, and farkas is STILL worthless during this quest. Despite have 893 hp on him, with me@ L69,hes still worthless and cant take a hit-seriously. Now I am using difficulty mods which is clearly a factor, but even still, I think hes more useless than Serana combat wise. He (still) seems to have no real Armor protection, and his dps is terrible. No change here. One could always put difficulty on Novice to compenstate for Farkus uselessness, but that's a poor work-a-round imo.

Moved from article: When starting the quest, Farkas may be bugged. As he will continue to talk to you every time he gets close and will not fight in the dungeon. I think this may be because I had a Flame Thrall Summoned, but not sure. (Xbox 360)

Does followers permanently or temporarily disappear?[edit]

I know this was an old question, but I was wondering the same thing and figured I'd add my experience since I just had this happen. I'm running version 1.9 on PC and when I started this quest it said that my follower was "replaced" by Farkas. After the quest was over, I checked the map and my follower, Belrand, was almost back to Solitude (I have a mod for follower map markers). I figured I would fast travel up near the Solitude stables and catch him, but when I got there he had already made it to the city. I found him back in the Winking Skeever and had to rehire him for 500g. He still had the equipment that I gave him, but he wasn't wearing the armor. Once we walked outside the Winking Skeever, he had re-equipped the armor and everything appears to be back to normal.--Ignotus (talk) 14:43, 30 April 2014 (GMT)

Bugged[edit]

I have a problem similar to what was written in the bug section. Vilkas doesn't appear when I go to Jorrvaskr, only, its worse for me. nothing I do can make him appear. I tried going from the stables, even running all the way from Dustman's Cairn. Is there a console command that will fix this? Saromango 05:36, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

You can try to use Player.moveto 1A695 to move yourself to where Vilkas is located. Should this command not work you can try to spawn a new copy of Vilkas with Player.placeatme 1A694 1 Thuraya Salaris 05:57, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
That let me find Vilkas, which I couldn't do before, but he still won't lead me to the ceremony where I'm meant to join the companions officially. But thanks anyway, at least now I can find him. Saromango 06:17, 1 February 2012 (UTC)
I suppose you could try forcing him to 'reset' his AI by using disable 1A694 and enable 1A694 to disable and re-enable him. It occassionally works with NPCs who start doing odd things, or get stuck in the gemoetry. --Reka 17:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

What happened to the Fragment?[edit]

Killing dragur in final room before grabbing fragment[edit]

It seems that they have 'fixed' this so you can no longer attack the coffins and kill the dragur first. I attacked with sword, voice and spells and they all remained closed until I grabbed the fragment.— Unsigned comment by 99.103.220.76 (talk) at 03:42 on 9 March 2012

Did you try the rune spells? These are the only way I know of that is guaranteed to harm draugr when they are in their coffins. Other spells and weapon attacks work sometimes but they are far from reliable. Coronus 03:52, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
My first play-through I found that Fireball was 100% reliable - made them bust out of the coffins and easy to finish one at a time. Didn't try it in Dustman's Crypt since I hadn't figured this out yet, nor did I have the spell. Started a new guy on patch 1.5. Sadly I only had Destruction at 24 so couldn't cast Fireball or Fire Rune. As a PC user I "rezzed up" some scrolls of both. Fireball did not force them out of the coffins. I cast 20 Fire Rune scrolls on one coffin. Each one was triggered, presumably by the target inside the coffin. But 20 scrolls? At 50 dmg per scroll? Stage 110 Not found[edit]

Difficulty of quest is level dependent[edit]

The 1st time I did this quest I was about level 41 or 42. Wasn't too hard till I got to the end where you get the word and the fragment. After you take fragment wave after wave of skeletons came after me from everywhere. They wouldn't stop. I tried sneaking back to door I came in to escape but it was locked with no way to open not even lockpicking. So I just killed skells using every potion and food I had and a boss skell comes out of the center crypt with dragon shouts. Eventually I kill him and everyone and a door opens on top and I can walk out. Took me forever to finish.

Then on my second char I did this quest at level 10 or so.. I thought great I'm toast but try it for a laugh. Well only a few skells my level come out and the boss skell never came out. Plus it let me go thru the locked door I came in that I couldnt use before.

So doing this is MUCH easier at low levels, but because you kill less, you get less drops and skill points. Also even though it drove me crazy the harder level was much more fun. — Unsigned comment by 184.98.249.101 (talk) at 22:09 on 2 June 2012

I completed this quest as a level 7 warrior Nord. I would not recommend it for such low levels. The waves of regular draugr were easy, but at the end there was a Death Lord and he murdered me and Farkas multiple times. I eventually was able to kill him by jumping on the table where the amulet was and taking pot shots while running away, using tons of health potions, and getting a level-up health restore as well. Took a while to whittle him down. Not recommended for characters below level 10.

This quest is on some drugs, I tell you what. I did it at around level 20 and every Silver Hand with a greatsword was taking off half my health per hit when they didn't just cut the foreplay and go for decapitation. They were nearly impossible to kill too, took many reloads to get through to the final draugr room (which was a total cakewalk compared to what had come before). Farkas was completely useless, he'd go down after a brief fight. Did it again at level 15, wasn't a pinch but was definitely a whole lot easier. It probably helped that the second time through I had the disarm shout at my disposal...can't really give someone the chop if ye've not got a sword anymore. :)

It really depends on your level... None of the mobs are leveled smoothly. At level 5 and level 6 the mobs are the exact same. The higher you are in your currently level bracket the easier it will be, until you hit the next level bracket, and then the mobs are comparatively harder for you. A note. I am right now playing this with a level 10 character, and most of the draugr in the room are just base draugr, easy to beat. However the draugr in the crypt in the centre of the final room is a Deathlord with disarming capability, which is a bit heavy for a level 10 Dragonborn to say the least. :) --Morrolan (talk) 01:47, 19 February 2013 (GMT)
I finally beat the Deathlord. Normally I play on Master difficulty; I tuned the difficulty down to Apprentice and he was still quite challenging for me. However I discovered when I looted his body that he had an ebony war axe and shield as well, which given that I'm now level 11 is pretty much far in advance of when I would normally acquire ebony equipment. --Morrolan (talk) 03:16, 19 February 2013 (GMT)
The "minimum level" of Dustman's Cairn is 6. This suggests that anyone above that level, with properly leveled attacking skills would be fine (on Normal difficulty). The thing is that Master Difficulty plays havoc with the leveling system, causing not only stronger NPCs/creatures, but stronger weapons for those NPCs/creatures. Farkas stays in werewolf form forever?[edit]

Don't know whether I'm the only one, but yesterday I completed this quest and when I got back to white run, Farkas was standing next to a city guard... in werewolf form. The guard didn't arrest him though, and when I went to Jorrvaskr to get everyone to celebrate as I was made a "companion" member, Farkas still was a werewolf. Is this a bug, or does Farkas always stay a werewolf after his transformation in that tomb? --Nv4dispbluescreen (talk) 10:25, 20 September 2012 (GMT)

Tested it again with a new character and it happened again. Did the tomb of ysgramor quest and Farkas followed me as a werewolf. It seems I somehow missed the trigger during the proving honor quest where he changes back to human form... --Nv4dispbluescreen (talk) 10:23, 24 September 2012 (GMT)

New Bug with Initiating Conversation[edit]

Starting bug[edit]

After the Initiation Ceremony, Kodlak enter into a conversation with me and tells me that I am now part of the Companions, but he will not exit the conversation, I can't exit the conversation (tab), he won't take the fragment. I can exit the dialogue window by moving my character through the console (select an npc, type player.moveto <npc id>), but then I can't start new quests for them, nor will the fragment be removed.

I can't find this glitch mentioned anywhere else but here. I'm playing on xbox360. I have the same glitch when after the Initiation Ceremony ended, I couldn't move nor talk to anyone. It's as if I was frozen. The only thing I can do was to look around. And before I entered the ceremony to become one of their member, when I went up the stairs to the front door, there wasn't anyone (not even my partner) at the top of the stairs to greet me. I think that's how the glitch started? I went back to a few saved points but the glitch is still there. Is there a patch to this glitch or bug? 50.184.9.29 02:15, 18 September 2014 (GMT)

Another glitch I can't find anywhere else[edit]

So I'm on the 360, and I'm trying to attend my initiation, and I'm completely stuck on the "Follow Vilkas" stage. I have no idea what's wrong. I'm in Whiterun, there are all 5 numbskulls in a semi-circle, and nothing freaking happens. I try to talk to Vilkas. He just gives me speech with no available responses (like when a guard gives the "arrow to the knee" line). So that's a no go. I talk to Farkas. He gives me "Who are the Silver Hand" "What is Wuuthrad" "The Companions are Werewolves" and "Why did Skjor call this my trial" as options. None give any quest updates. Kodlak is "busy." Skjor is "busy." Aela is "busy." And Farkas still reacts like my follower (sheathes/unsheathes with me, although he stays in his place).

It's freaking stuck like this. I can't add another follower, I can't advance in the quest. I can't kill Farkas because he's evidently essential. Does anyone else know what I can do?

Fix to the bug resulting in no initiation ceremony[edit]

I'm on PC, and have encountered this bug on more than one game file. The bug is the one where you return to Jorvvaskr, speak to Skor, and the quest is moved to complete, but there is no initiation ceremony and no leaders offer any work. I saved after leaving Dustmans Cairn on my recent file, so that I would have several attempts to figure out the glitch.

The bug occurs when you fast travel to Jorvvaskr, and the quest marker leads you to speak to Skor directly.

I believe that the solution to the bug lies within the method of fast travel to Whiterun. Instead of using the map marker at Jorvvaskr (it may only be there because of a mod, I can't remember if it's default) I traveled to the Whiterun main gate. Upon running up the town to Jorvvaskr, I met Vilkas (I believe) at the top of the steps leading into the hall, and he initiated conversation to lead me around back to my initiation.

Another possible solution could be not the fast travel, but possibly Skor / Vilkas' locations when you return. If you return at night, do they (whichever character it was) stand at the top of the steps? Or do they rather sit in their beds, posing a glitched conversation leading to no ceremony.

Either way, fast travelling to whiterun in the middle of the day and walking through the town to the hall was my solution. Hopefully this will help some of you other vets quarantine the exact problem, post it so that others can avoid the glitch, and possibly find a solution to be added to the Unofficial patch.

Well, thanks for the info. I fast traveled directly to Jorrvaskr from Dustmans Cairn and I am now experiencing this same bug. I'm on PC with v1.9 and all four unofficial patches. Unfortunately, I do not have a save to fall back on. I didn't realize that I was bugged until I read what you posted. I couldn't find anyone to give me a companions quest, and I don't recall an initiation ceremony happening. I overwrote my saves because I wasn't aware that I was bugged. I guess the entire companions quest line is now broken for me. I've played through the game 3 times and never did this quest line, and now I can't. I wonder if there is some type of console command to adjust your faction standing with the companions so you can at least mark yourself as a full companion as if the ceremony took place, and then start getting quests from them again. I have a mod that adds some "essential" fast travel locations. I think it may have added the Jorrvaskr location, which fast traveling to following Dustmans Cairn caused it to break the quest. --Ignotus (talk) 22:32, 30 April 2013 (GMT)
Well... this is very ironic. It's now exactly a year later and this just happened to me again. I'm quite aggravated by it. I did the quest thinking to myself the whole time that I had done this before and encountered some kind of irritating bug, but I couldn't remember what it was. So I hard saved before going into the dungeon, and again when I exited. I couldn't remember the exact bug, but I thought it might have been related to traveling to or from the dungeon. So this time instead of fast traveling back to Jorrvaskr at the end, I fast traveled to the market inside Whiterun and continued on. I had no idea that I was bugged. The leaders said to go do something else until they decided if I had acted honorably on the quest. The log says to talk to the leaders or elders or whatever for more missions, but no one offers any. So I went and did a few other things and still nothing. Now I dig a bit deeper and find this comment on the 'talk' page and even find my own comment from exactly a year ago. I do have a save to fall back on this time, but I'll lose a little progress regardless. Can someone PLEASE add this to the bugs section of the article? PLEASE! It appears that if you don't walk through the Whiterun gate, and instead fast travel to a location inside Whiterun, you're screwed. I read all of the bugs before doing the quest (because I KNEW there was something wrong with it) and this wasn't mentioned or I would have avoided it.
I'm not much of an editor. I'm mostly just a wiki user. I don't know much about editing or verification of bugs and such. However, if no one else wants to add this, I may go ahead and try to add it because it's so irritating. I don't have a console, so I can't say if it happens on an unmodded game. I do know that I have completely reinstalled Windows and Skyrim and that I'm using different mods than what I used last year when this happened. I don't see the harm in adding that there may be a potential bug if you fast travel to a location inside Whiterun after exiting Dustman's Cairn. Hope it will help someone. I'm playing on PS3 and faced to this issue (fast travel to Blancherive). After going outside of Jorrvaskr, an autosave file have been created, just reload it and walk to the front of the three guys (not to close), wait for Farkas to be close to them before initiating the conversation (the four of them must be visible), that's it. — Unsigned comment by 81.64.217.199 (talk) at 19:06 on 12 July 2014
I don't know how to proper edit this but...
I'm using PC version of the game. I had the same problem of being stuck in the cerimony.
My solution is to return to the Dustman's Cair find Farkas and go to Witherun by foot. I arrive at night and with Farkas following i talk to Vilkas inside then go to outside. Committing a minor crime, like shouting at a guard seems to be the easiest way to get the ceremony started. One shout, 40 credits and Vilkas was waiting for me.Arkayn (talk) 02:59, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Can't start Proving honor[edit]

There seems to be some discussion as to how many and which radiant quests you need to complete before you can advance in the Companions' questline. Try doing a variety of Companions' radiant quests, checking in with Skjor after completing each one. It's been awhile since I did this quest, but it seemed like you had to be directed by some other Companion to talk to Skjor before his dialogue option would appear. --Xyzzy Talk 15:32, 2 February 2013 (GMT)
I hit this exact problem. It sounds as if more radiant quests are required, but there is no option to ask for more work. And Skjor says "You still need to prove yourself whelp". Only the default talk options about the War, What it means to be a companion, Why did folk join etc are available.
Using the console to start the quest manually, fails. (setstage C01 1)
If you subsequently type SQV C01 it will ShowQuestVariables, and reveal that none of the aliases have been filled, the quest remains disabled, and (quite frighteningly) remains stuck at stage 0.
After much script examination, I believe the damage is minimal. The CompanionsHouseKeeping Script intercepts the questline at the end of the radiant quest, turning off the "ask for work" objective, setting the "StoryIsRunning" flag to be true, and calling "setstage c01 1". Which fails, of course, halting the questline, but doing very little damage to the game. The symptoms of this state match the described problem exactly.
The questline is happily restored by the console setstage command, ONCE YOU FIND THE MOD THAT IS CAUSING THE ALIAS FILL TO FAIL. And turn it off, of course.
In my case, this proved to be GECK.O's MoreMales mod. I don't know why it causes this problem, but a vanilla game with just this mod loaded, causes C01 to fail to initialise via console even at the Helgen Tunnel Exit. I turned off the mod from my list of 250, and my game instantly resumed the Companions questline. C01 started, aliases were filled, and the companion leaders instantly said "Skjor was looking for you earlier". I had loaded a savegame where I was standing in Jorrvaskr, next to Skjor, to test it via console initiation, and it worked immediately. Just as it should be. The chat options are tested as you initiate conversation, not when you enter the cell, it seems.
Since the aliases remain filled while the quest is running, it should be safe to turn the mod back on again as soon as the quest is started.
Oh, and (in 1.9.32) it only takes one radiant quest after C00 Taking Up Arms to trigger the start of C01. Some later quests require 2 to continue the storyline, but IIRC the order is 1, 1, 2, 2. 78.150.100.88 21:57, 4 January 2014 (GMT)

Clipping glitch - moved from article[edit]

  • At the beginning, it is possible to use the second lever (behind the closed gate) first, by going trough the gate with the clipping glitch. If you do so, the lever will say that its stuck, and the gate with the first lever will close, making it impossible for Farkas to come, and see him transform into a wolf.

**This can be fixed by using the clipping clitch again and use the first lever, altough this time when the Silver Hands come, you can walk where you want.

***After that confrontation, you cant use your weapons anymore, even not by going outside or fast-traveling. You need to re-load a savefile.

I moved this bug here for discussion because it relies on the clipping exploit to occur, and I know that we generally don't list bugs that occur as a result of using an exploit. Anybody object to this removal? --Xyzzy Talk 14:44, 6 February 2013 (GMT)

Bug where enemies are too strong[edit]

I did this at level 11 and got THREE deathlords at the end. This ties in with the bug which begins "There is a chance the leveled enemies in Dustman's Cairn will not generate at your current level....etc" Just another confirmation of this one. I'm not sure if that now makes it a confirmed bug. Perhaps someone more familiar with the bug process can help and amend the article if necessary Vlad the Imperial (talk) 18:58, 23 June 2013 (GMT)

Ending the ceremony on PS3[edit]

Hey, so I know there are various solutions using console commands to fix the glitch where villas doesn't appear and the everyone gets stick after the ceremony ends. I also saw a few solutions for PS3/XBox involving waiting for an hour and it'd unfreeze, and that if I enter Whiterun through the gates that Vilkas will appear, however neither of these have worked. Is there anyway to get past it? I've seen that a ton of others have had a major issue with this as well, so some sort of fix/solution would be wonderful..I just joined the companions on my high level account and I don't wanna lose it :/ thanks!! — Unsigned comment by 24.18.146.102 (talk) at 02:35 on 16 July 2013

Actually I solved the issue with my own solution I found!! Before initiating the ceremony, attack one if the Whiterun guards. Once u start the ceremony, Whiterun guards will attack, but Kodlack and the rest will continue the speech. Once it ends, the Whiterun guards ask you to submit and take you to jail. Once u leave hall and find Kodlack again, he'll start saying the script for the end of the quest that follows the ceromonys speech, and the quest becomes completed. That's not exactly what I meant (I read through your link and the part you added to the 'Bug' section of the Proving Honor article). What I did was, while on the "Return to Jorvaskrr" part of the quest (never talked to Vilkas), I attacked a Whiterun guard and got bounty, then ran to initiate the ceremony behind Jorvaskrr. While some Companions intercepted the guards in front of Jorvaskrr and fought them as the ceremony commenced, eventually the guards won. These guards came to attack the Companions who were behind Jorvaskrr and involved in the ceremony. (since they were involved in the ceremony, the Companions here never fought back) After the ceremony ended I was still frozen like how the glitch normally plays out, but one of the attacking guards eventually prompted me to go to Jail. I did, waited out the jailtime, returned to Jorvaskrr, talked to Kodlak, and the quest was completed. I didn't choose to pay off my bounty like you said in the article. In fact, going to jail is what i think helped me to escape the glitch; after teleporting to the jail, I was able to move freely. All of this being said, while it worked for me the first time, I tried several times again and it had a fairly low success rate. Since the Companions not involved in the ceremony will usually outnumber the number of guards pursuing you for your bounty (2-4 guards on average), the Companions that intercept the guards in front of Jorvaskrr usually end up winning, so no guards are alive to interrogate you after the ceremony and send you to jail. This is therefore not a very viable solution to the glitch, unless a method to better ensure the Guards winning is found. Could adjusting the difficulty level give them an advantage over the Companions? (e.g. Master difficulty may give them more health as enemies than your allies? Not sure how those stats work) Another possibility I considered is that guards may confront you if you have a bounty after you finish Waiting or Sleeping in a hold you've committed a crime in. If you commit a crime in which they'd confront you after Waiting, you can Wait once the ceremony ends, and then be taken to jail that way instead of relying on the unpredictable method I mentioned previously. — Unsigned comment by 24.18.146.102 (talk) at 07:59 on 17 July 2013‎

If you still have a savegame from before the ceremony starts, could you head directly up to Dragonsreach instead of Jorrvaskr and see if anybody in the palace attacks you? That could indicate whether this bug is related to the Unexplained hostility bug. --Xyzzy Talk 02:51, 20 July 2013 (GMT)
Possible fix - ran into this bug on the 360 - fast traveled to Whiterun, ran into Jorvaskrr (was night time), thought it was strange nobody was inside except Vilkas who was sleeping; didn't talk to him, just ran outside and went to the quest marker - after the conversation, I was stuck in place, couldn't bring up the menu with B but could wait, save, and load; I waited an hour at a time until eventually Vilkas woke up and went outside, at which point Kodlak initiated a conversation with me and the ceremony ended, and I was free to move/unsheathe my weapon at will. -ChaoticAscension (talk) 05:33, 28 July 2013 (GMT)

Based on a topic above, it sounds like this bug may be due to a mod that adds additional fast-travel markers to the in-game map. Confirmed, fast travel using Atlas and Vilkas is not waiting outside Jorrvaskr. Left Whiterun and came back in through the gates and then Vilkas was waiting as expected

Bugs Cleanup[edit]

  • When you get trapped in the small room, Farkas may not change to werewolf form and attack the Silver Hand members, instead fighting them in his human form.
    • On PC Use a console command to pass through the gate, such tcl, and activate the lever outside of the room to reenable your controls. Proceed to attack Farkas until he drops into the recovery position. When he stands back up, he will behave as he should, including transforming into a werewolf.
  • After returning to Whiterun, if you do not travel through the Whiterun gates (i.e. you fast travel to Dragonsreach), Vilkas might not be waiting outside Jorrvaskr, but may instead be found in the back courtyard or sleeping in his room in the Jorrvaskr Living Quarters. You must talk to him to complete this quest and receive the next one.
    • This is easily fixed by fast traveling to the stables and walking through the Whiterun gates.
  • When returning to Jorrvaskr, Vilkas may not be waiting and the map marker will lead you directly to Kodlak. This will "complete" the quest without induction preventing you from receiving any more quests from the Companions.
    • On PC Type player.addfac 00048362 1 into the console to be inducted and setstage C03 10 to start the next quest.

I just experienced one of these myself, the one where Farkas attacks the Silver Hand as a human instead of a werewolf. As soon as they show up, he pulls out his sword and starts swinging away before they can say their lines. I eventually fixed it by selecting him in the console and typing stopcombat and the scene proceeded as normal. His dialog also seems to be bugged, with no training option and he attacked me earlier when I hit him by accident in combat. I think I have a mod that's screwed him up, but I'm not sure which would be causing it. --67.142.170.21 12:05, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Followers Still Following[edit]

I've got Serana as a follower. So, though I got a message saying that what's his name was temporarily replacing my follower as a follower, that didn't happen. Serana went with me as I fast traveled to the location, and when we entered the tomb, Serana was still with me. Farkas not following[edit]

Weird Vilkas-related bug[edit]

It might be related to one already mentioned, but I didn't see it described quite this way, so I figured I'd mention it. When I got back to Whiterun, I entered through the main gates, and went straight to Jorvaskr. The quest marker points to Kodlak, and there's no Vilkas to be found, so I went looking inside. I found him sleeping in his bed, so I talked to him to get him going. He has the dialogue, "We've been waiting for you, etc", so I say why, he says follow me, the quest updates to 'Follow Vilkas', and the pointer moves to him, but he just stands there next to his bed staring at me. Talking to him again gives me the option for him to train me in whatever he trains me in, and that's it. I'm on xbox, so no console solutions for me, maybe it's just broken... And I found my own solution! I got up on his bed and kept running into him (ie. pushing him). Because he's jammed in a corner, he doesn't go anywhere, but eventually he just disappeared and reappeared in the middle of the room. After than he took off running. Hired muscle/ Proving honor (returning to Jorrvaskar )bug[edit]

After i retrieved the fragment of Wuuthrad the quest tells me to return to Jorrvaskar .

till here it is normal but the bug apears when i enter Jorvaskar. , the quest marker shows Skijor and outside i can't find Vilkas .

I did the things that was said here but he just leaves me without saying anything even the option to my initiation is not present and even if i talk to Skijor although the quest seems to be completed the return to Jorvaskar stays unmarked .

There's an other problem if i speak to any of the companions again they have their normal greetings but with no option to talk or ask them and i'll stuck at their dialogue tab and can't exit however i press the tab key or shift tab ,not even by clicking on the exit .

Loading previous save won't even solve all of these bugs .oh and i have problem with the brawels too .

when for the first job before fully become a member of the companions Farkas says there's trouble in whiterun ( hired muscle ) the said NPC just stands where he/she was when i talk to them for a brawl and they do nothing and even if they do they just run ,scream , and the funny thing is they will retreat to other NPCs' house , but they will not do anything .

So for hired muscle i had to use console command to finish the quest and starting proving honor . Please tell me if there's anything i can do to solve these bugs .

Easier console fix for Farkas's dropped sword[edit]

There's an easier way to use the console to give Farkas back his sword when he drops it when he transforms in the lever room. If you select him (or type prid 1A693) and then type additem 9F25E 1, he's got his Skyforge broadsword back and equipped. Bugs section advice-poorly worded-makes zero sense at all[edit]

Can't finish radiant quest[edit]

Before beginning Proving Honor I took a radiant quest from Farkas (Trouble in Skyrim). After beating the guy in subject, I returned to Jorrvaskr only to be immediately greeted by Skjor and starting this quest. After that Farkas stopped having his responses for his radiant quest and was talking phrases related to this quest. The radiant quest is left hanging in my journal and there seems no way to finish it, except console. Or maybe I should start another TiS quest, if that's possible.   • Skjor may not be available at the start of this quest and the map and compass will put him at the Giant's Camp called "Bleakwind Basin".

I know that the Companions can be seen wandering around the world every now and then as random encounters (I've seen Farkas doing it after completing the questline), but I've never heard of one not being around Jorrvaskr in the middle of a non-radiant guildline quest. The bit about Bleakwind Basin also seems a bit specific; I wonder if the person who added this was tracking the quest right next to Proving Honor in his/her quest log at the time, and it was the quest target for THAT quest that led to the assumption that Skjor was there, since Skjor has no relation to that particular location. New Bug - Vilkas only talks about his usual topics[edit]

Note: By "new", I mean "not mentioned before in this article or on this wiki." I've had this bug since I started playing this game, ages ago.

Upon returning to Jorvaskar, Vilkas simply does what he usually does every day. There is no change in his conversation, no big meeting out back, nothing. The Companions questline simply... Stops. The last dot of the quest (return to Jorvaskr) is never filled, but the quest bumps to the "completed" set and is grayed out. The quest log simply has the miscellaneous quest "talk to the companions leaders for work", but none of them OFFER any work. That's it. Done. Proving Honor is, effectively, the last quest in the line, nothing happens after that.

This is a highly repeatable bug for me (as in "it happens every time, with no mods at all"), I think it happens every time the Silver Hand manage to smash Farkas down to the "bleedout" state. Which they always do, he's almost completely helpless in any kind of fight that isn't 1v1 against an animal - anyone with sword & shield at or near his level easily slams him to bleedout in under a minute or so, he's simply too slow and has no tactics other than "whack at things until I fall down" while most bandits stun-lock him with shield bashes and hammer him to his knees easily. The reason why I think this is the problem is because you're TOLD to try to protect him. And I've tried, I really can't. If he isn't charging in and getting beat down by Silver Hand and Draugr, he's leaping in front of me to get backstabbed by my sword or shot in the head by my arrow. He's pretty consistent with the last one, too - if I draw an arrow, he is right there, his head filling my screen, the moment I let go of the button - bam, down, bleedout. Well, after that, I can get to the last room, beat all the draugr, get the shards, get the update to return to Jorvaskr, turn in the shards to Skorn, and... Well, that's it. All done. The next quest never starts, there's no jobs being offered, there's nothing more to do. Of course, it may be something else besides this - it may be a choice I'm making earlier on that's breaking the quest, but I just don't know. I've tried doing the companions questline as the very first thing starting at level one, but this quest is just not doable at low levels, every time I've tried it the final room always spawns Draugr Deathlords and such and it's just not possible to win.

And yes, I know, that may sound like I'm a bit harsh on poor Farkas, but I have dealt with this bug for years, now, it's IMMENSELY frustrating, sorry.

Anyway... I first did the quest at level 15, that character is level 98 now and literally years have passed in the game-world (as in "Aventus Arentino is old enough to get a driver's license.") Every other character I've tried has always had the same thing happen - no mods, no nothing, it just never worked for me. The quest does not update correctly on it's own, and never has. I can nudge it past that point with console commands, but this is the largest reason I've really never bothered to play a werewolf, even after Dawnguard came out. Becoming one requires the quest to advance beyond "Proving Honor", and it never does. I can nudge it past this point with console commands and I have seen the rest of the questline, but after years of this with no answer found, I don't bother anymore. To be honest, the only reason I even bother to go this far is to get the word-wall in the dungeon. I often don't bother going back to Jorrvaskr, I already know the quest won't complete, it's a waste of my time.

Oh - and just for that extra tweak of annoyance, I also can't buy Skyforge stuff from Eorlund with this bug. He only sells normal stuff, there is no free goodie given, and he doesn't train in Smithing. Again, no mods, and I can nudge it past this point with console commands, but the quest has never worked for me. Not even once.174.28.86.89 05:21, 8 October 2019 (GMT)

Hello again. Update: I tried it with a fresh start, again no mods, new character, and this time, I went straight to Jorvaskr to kick off the quest as the first thing I did. And Oh. My. God. Did it break hard. Skjor simply disappeared, he wasn't around for the scene where you hand the shield to Aela, and that quest couldn't complete. He flat out vanished from the game. Nudged it past that with console commands, and he was still gone, and the next quest couldn't start because you need to talk to him. Tried pulling him to me with console commands, he just stood there, can't talk, "this person is busy." Nudge it past that point and the quest says to talk to [...]. Nudge it past that point and head to the tomb, Farkas isn't there, never appears. Seriously, the Companions questline is completely and utterly broken, it's entirely pointless to even try to play it without mods to fix its bugs. 174.28.237.24 13:41, 8 November 2019 (GMT)
