Paarthurnax second word glitch[edit]

After Paarthurnax breathes fire onto the word wall so that Shol can be learned, nothing happens. The words don't appear on the wall or anything, just an arrow pointing to the wall telling me I should learn the word of power which isn't there, which prevents me from completing the shout and progressing in the main quest. Has anyone else had this problem, or can tell me a way to fix/prevent this glitch? I am on Xbox, so I can't use console commands.69.244.23.111 05:16, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

I have duplicated this bug in a different way: I had the first word from the quest prior, but also experienced nothing on the word wall at Paarthurnax. I could continue as I already had the first word, but I cannot get all three words for firebreath as a result. — Unsigned comment by 119.224.80.17 (talk) at 05:08 on 9 January 2012
I did learn the second word when I met Paarthurnax. I had one word, and I got the second at the word wall with Paarthrunax, so at least this glitch isn't going to occur every time somebody tries to get word two from Paarthurnax. Have any of you tried getting the third word and then coming back? That might get the word wall to work. Chris3145 14:50, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
I had word 1 and 2 and then came to learn the third one here when nothing happens. 69.244.23.111 05:16, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Same. Paarthurnax uses his shout and I get a guest marker showing the words of the shout, but there is no words for me to read. Going to the marked spot didn't help. I have rank 2 fire breath already.--84.248.192.31 09:50, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Only two words?[edit]

So I have all three words of fire breath learned and unlocked, but when I hold down the power key for the full breath attack, he only says the first word (yol) and the last word (shol). Either that or the second word is so horribly slurred into the third that I can't hear it. :S — Unsigned comment by 75.34.55.137 (talk) at 05:53 on 12 January 2012

Same problem! All three words I learned and unlocked (the third one from Paarthurnax), but only two can be used. More precisely, as if she would be blurred or simultaneously heard the last two words ... I went back over the places but nothing changes. — Unsigned comment by Josska1 (talkcontribs) at 13:33 on 27 November 2012

Aspect of Terror perk from Illusion Tie In?[edit]

Does getting this perk increase the damage of the shout as it does with other fire spells? — Unsigned comment by 98.238.243.104 (talk) at 22:43 on 21 January 2012

Shol?[edit]

I play the game with subtitle on and I am pretty sure that Alduin shouts " Yol Toor Shul", not "Yol Toor Shol". Also, as in http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dragon_Language , "Sun" is "Shul", not "Shol". So i think there' a mistake in this page. Someone should fix it.117.5.241.50 16:59, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I had him saying the same thing, and Shul is what's listed as a word of power in the game, so I changed it. Thanks. -Vardis 17:44, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Buffed by Augmented Flames[edit]

I am fairly certain the Augmented Flames perk is buffing the damage of this shout, and presumably Augmented Frost would also buff Frost Breath. Playing as a destruction mage with the perk, the health damage to a target hit by Fire Breath is noticeably much higher than a target hit with Frost Breath. This is noticeable before meeting Paarthunax and getting the perk from him that further increases its damage. --97.73.64.153 10:44, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Yes it also seemed to happen to my character too. I think a note can be added to the page, maybe with a citation needed until further testing is done. RIM 12:29, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
Remember that quite a few enemies in Skyrim are resistant to frost to some degree, or even immune (all Nords, for example, take half damage from frost). This sounds like the case to me. Spiegel1 (talk) 20:54, 6 December 2012 (GMT)
SOO... ¿Does this also works with Ahzidal's Dragon Priest mask? Not very good at math :( M05c0 (talk) 02:19, 17 August 2014 (GMT)
The page for the Ahzidal mask says that it does. --AN|L (talk) 14:53, 17 August 2014 (GMT)
Augmented Flames affects all effects that have the "MagicDamageFire" keyword, which is the case for Fire Breath. So yes it does buff the damage.--94.134.181.141 21:56, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

Efficiency[edit]

The recently added note about the effective damage per second being less the more words you use makes me wonder - is this still true if you get the meditation bonus from Paarthurnax? This increases the damage without changing the recharge, so it might affect these values. Either way, it should be noted. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 23:15, 23 March 2013 (GMT)

Alright, let's do the maths. Assuming the bonus of 25% more damage works as intended the first word now does 62.5 damage, the second 87.5, the third 112.5. When you divide those new numbers by the cooldown, you get 2.083 dps, 1.75 dps, and 1.125 dps, respectively. So while they are obviously doing more damage all around, the best version of this shout as far as dps is concerned is still the first one. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 23:22, 23 March 2013 (GMT)

Fire Wyrms and Spell Absorbtion[edit]

Are the Fire Wyrms affected by the Spell Absorbtion bug? --88.78.62.188 10:50, 1 April 2013 (GMT)

DPS analysis - moved from article[edit]

  • This long-run dps calculation may not be meaningful if you are able to use the shout to complete a fight before the cooldown completes. Put another way, if you do the full shout (90 damage) at the start of a fight and are able to finish the fight before a single-word-shout would have recharged (30 seconds), then it doesn't matter that using the single word shout has a higher dps since you were able to inflict enough damage initially to make the fight sufficiently shorter (in game terms, this is called "burst DPS").
  • Conversely, in any long fight, such as against a boss-level opponent or dragon, that is expected to last at least 30 seconds, using only a single-word version of this shout will more efficiently inflict damage over time, as once you are able to shout twice in one fight, the two-word and three-word versions of this shout will never be able to catch up in terms of dps.

This is useful information, but it is not relevant to just this shout. Skyrim:Frost Breath has the same dps info without the analysis, even though it is just as relevant. A better place for this might be Skyrim:Dragon Shouts, possibly with an intnote for each shout that this analysis is relevant to. Thoughts? --Xyzzy Talk 02:13, 1 October 2013 (GMT)

Ugh, keep it away from any article, this is basic gameplay across all games (use a big burst of damage to finish a fight-who cares about cool-down then). It doesn't need explaining to anyone legally old enough to be playing the games. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 02:20, 1 October 2013 (GMT)

Fire breath trains destruction[edit]

Using fire breath appears to train destruction skill - literally two uses with successful hit were enough to level from 15 to 16 on adept. — Unsigned comment by AnyDee (talkcontribs) at 13:03 on 17 November 2023 (UTC)
