Stealth Method

I find the stealth method very fail. Before entering last house a mage is blocking the doorway and he have far better stealth detection than the guards, there is a light nearby making it impossible to approach undetected. My 80 stealth was not enough. Was gutted, thought I had to restart it all over and fight my way. Tried to enter, left and re-entered again with stealth and aggro. Ended up inside the house undetected. I would not call this a viable stealth option, as walking through a door should not make them loose sight of you. In any case, it's a exploit. — Unsigned comment by Ible (talkcontribs) at 00:22 on 19 November 2011

What happens to Malborn and the prisoner? Should one just go back and slaughter the place, to free them? — Unsigned comment by Ible (talkcontribs) at 00:24 on 19 November 2011

Has anyone else had problems with this quest?
As soon as I talk to Delphine to board the carriage, the game freezes.
I stripped down my entire inventory to only my lockpicks, my money and 2 quest items (Unusual Gem).
Using the steam version if that makes a difference.

I had given all my stuff to Malborn and gone down the stables to meet Delphine. As soon as the conversation with her started, a dragon attacked. I reloaded, went back down to the stables, and a dragon attacked again. I reloaded, went down the hill and waited a few minutes. Then I spoke to Delphine, and a dragon attacked. So finally I reloaded, went down the hill, waited a few minutes, went into the stables building, came back out, and it worked fine. They REALLY should have disabled the random dragon spawning for certain events.--QuillanTalk 15:30, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
I had this EXACT same problem, I found out I could fix it by dumping ALL the items that I hadn't given to Malborn (minus the quest items that I couldn't drop) into a safe container and then I was able to board the carriage without the game freezing --66.152.116.91 14:26, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

I also have this problem. I have tried without any items at all as well as just one item, all in vain. Maybe someone can help me here (and hopefully urgently). CyberXZT 05:43, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
Nevermind, I quit out then reopened and what do you know? It worked. CyberXZT 06:05, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

() The walkthrough is leading people into a suicidal and impossible sneak method that completely ignores Malborn and the prisoner. It is not a sneak method if your killing the way, something you have to do. Minimum 1 wizard must be killed to complete, and minimum 3 guards and 2 wizards if you want to save Malborn and the prisoner. If this sneak method is valid, you could put a sneak method on every objective in game. There is no sneak method on Diplomatic Immunity, only combat. — Unsigned comment by Ible (talkcontribs) at 17:31 on 22 November 2011

I guess it didn't occur to any of you to smuggle in some invisibility potions, or maybe learn such a spell... it's ok, I didn't think of it either until I was in the mansion. Other potential ways to ease sneaking around:
  • Potions and enchanted items that increase Sneak.
  • Wear Light armor, or no armor at all.
  • Employ the Shout that lets you dash like 30 feet instantly, together with Invisibility (untested, probably reveals your position to the guards).
  • If you're a total pacifist, use the Fear spell/effect. Make them run away from you in fear. Also: Paralysis.
If you don't mind a few guards dying:
  • Turn the guards on each other with Frenzy and Mayhem spells and scrolls. Cast them while hidden, behind their backs. (untested, they could be too high a level).
  • Just like in any game, if you have to kill without being seen, place traps on patrol routes and doorways. There are spells, runes, that function as landmines.
  • Summon creatures around corners, right in the guards' view. — Unsigned comment by 46.163.204.248 (talk) at 19:36 on 23 November 2011
These are Good suggestions but I have to wonder what level are the guards? Is fear targeted on the ground? Otherwise, a line of sight is required for the guard at the door. My sneak just wasn't good enough to avoid being spotted, just a glance, even through the cover of trees, lame, and it was over. I was never able to even see the door guard (it was nightfall) but he could always see me, also lame. Furthermore, casting any spell near a guards path alerted them to my position (only tried a rune). They knew exactly where I was and there was no way/where to hide.--RasterOps 17:24, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
I did the entire quest without killing anyone or smuggling any sort of invisibility potion. The only part that requires a little more than watching the guards is the courtyard and its wizrad guarding the door. If you sneak behind the house, a dragon appears and starts attacking the guard. You can wait for the dragon to kill most if not all of the guards and then sneak into the building. — Unsigned comment by 87.148.186.203 (talk) at 00:53 on 25 November 2011
That's just random luck. I did get behind the house (for me also sheer luck), no dragon appeared.--RasterOps 17:24, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Since the Wizard was the only problem (he does not react to anything), my only two imagined ways to "no-kill walkthroughs" are:
  • you can attack a random guard and immediately invisible-sneak till the eye goes out, afterwards enter the door before the wizard returns
  • similarily but without ever being found out: cast a low level Daedra (companion spirit) which will immediately turn hostile - and of course be disposed of - but provide a distraction. You need to keep in hiding though. --Ulkomaalainen 01:41, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Unusual Gem

Don't forget the Stone of Barenziah! On that page (No_Stone_Unturned) is it written, that this is the only chance to get that stone. It is in the bedroom in Elenwens Salon, downstairs are the documents and upstairs that stone. Be careful! One guard walks up and down the steps but it's plenty time to sneak and pass him when you know where he is. Someone could please transform that in proper English and add it on the page. 84.56.212.88 21:28, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

According to the changelog for the upcoming 1.4 patch the gem will continue to be accessible even after finishing this quest. --DarKnightofCydonia 13:46, 20 January 2012 (UTC).
I think we should leave the recommendation in place about getting the gem but change it and point out that it is not as critical. -- Warof7 23 January 2012 19:38 (UTC)

Does that mean I can enter the embassy again to retrieve the Unusual Gem after finishing Diplomatic Immunity? — Unsigned comment by 98.238.243.104 (talk) at 22:21 on 11 February 2012

Probably yes, but you may want to try and get it the first time around just to be safe. RIM 22:24, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Any bonus for being sneaky?

Is there? A bonus or a special outcome for remaining undetected the whole time? — Unsigned comment by 46.163.204.248 (talk) at 19:42 on 23 November 2011

No nothing you do matters in this quest. I have done this quest with two different characters and no matter what you do, it is the same. Not only do sneaky actions not work (ie throw voice has no effect, and you will get caught no matter what), the decisions you make have no effect on the game. For example, I killed the torturers and the tortured guy, and took all the info that they had written on him. Yet for some reason, the Thalmor still seem to know everything anyways. Which is why I hate doing this quest, because they expect you to just fight through everyone anyways. While this quest could have been really cool, it falls into the trap so many games do as to force you to play a certain way so they can get their desired outcome for the story they want to tell. Very unfortunate :( — Unsigned comment by 67.186.199.244 (talk) at 23:09 on 27 November 2011

quest bugs

Among the many problems I had with this quest, which ended up taking longer than clearing all of Labrythinian... arrgh!

Nearing the end of the embassy the first time, then reading this page and remembering that I brought a companion as I entered the party, I realized that I didn't want them to "disappear from the game world", so started over.

Next time, tried the method wearing the Thalmor Robes. I also wore the gloves and boots near them in the kitchen, hoping to play good RP and not shed blood until the end. However, even as an Altmer wearing the robes - couldn't get near any guard. I found that wearing the Hooded Thalmor Robes looted off a wizard helped considerably compared to the hoodless robes, but still, walking right up to anyone usually tipped them off. Also, the ability to tell the guards to leave their post is Persuade: dependent on speechcraft. 25 doesn't cut it :)

Finally, I found that the trap door key-holding guards only spawned if I asked Etienne Rarnis the option for "Hold on, you must know something" or something to that effect, to trigger the last quest stage. Seems that asking Etienne this before setting him free, is what advances the quest - not looting the books.

I had restored from an earlier save among all this mess, with the companion. After exiting the cave, the companion re-appeared. So maybe there is no risk of them disappearing, or at least it doesn't always happen. — Unsigned comment by Trep35 (talkcontribs) at 06:29 on 30 November 2011

The article states that your Follower will disappear from the game world if you do not have them wait somewhere before going to the party. In my game my follower showed up in the caves after rescuing the prisoner, and had no loss of functionality. — Unsigned comment by 24.247.157.164 (talk) at 18:59 on 5 December 2011
If your follower disappears, you can always use the console to respawn him. I've tested and it works. PC only. - Guest 01/2012 — Unsigned comment by 216.221.62.92 (talk) at 06:42 on 9 January 2012
My companion (Jenassa) not only didn't disappear, she was outside the embassy fighting guards (judging from the yelling and red radar dots) while I was trying to sneak through the courtyard. Then managed to somehow get past the troll and meet me in the torture room. I'd suggest if you're trying to do this with any sort of minimal kills to have your companion wait back in Solitude.98.165.130.46 08:50, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

Guests remain after quest is finished

Since completing the main quest, ive completed the dark brotherhood and thieves guild quest lines, and al the guests are still in the Thalmor embassy. It's more annoying than anything else as I can use the console to get in and out. Has anyone else had this problem? SHealy1992 23:00, 14 December 2011 (UTC)

the xbox bug doesn't exist.

I did the quest on the xbox with the vanilla version of the game and I did't exuberance any problems. should the bug saying it freezes on xbox be taken off the page?-John142 21:02, 17 December 2011

I didn't experience that bug either (Xbox 360, Skyrim version 1.3). Maybe the person who wrote that had a scratched disk or maybe the bug was fixed in one of the patches. Either way, I think we should label it as unconfirmed. --Dotat 04:32, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
I have just experienced this issue this morning. As far as I know i have the latest version and I am playing off the HD. Distractions

Fail! They simply do not work. Especially the "Throw Voice" Shout. I repeatedly used this shout while one of the guards was walking near my position with absolutely no reaction from the guard. I repeatedly used it near the hidden guard at the door, no reaction. What is the point of this shout if it doesn't even work where you need it? I shot arrows, near and far, even directly next to a guard, no reaction. I shot a potion that was laying in the path of a guard and watched as it flew off, no reaction.--RasterOps 17:24, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

lol yeah I can confirm "Throw Voice" doesn't seem to have much affect, in places - I just ended up slaughtering everyone and stripping their rotting corpses down to their undergarments. It was fun. Literat 06:05, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
I've tried Throw Voice in different situations, never worked. Did anyone actually use it successfully? - Guest 01/2012 — Unsigned comment by 216.221.62.92 (talk) at 06:45 on 9 January 2012
I've used it successfully during thieves guild missions, but for this quest, the only thing that worked stealthily was hiding in an alcove and shooting an arrow at one of the guards. The others ran over, and I was able to sneak inside undetected. — Unsigned comment by 31.52.5.4 (talk) at 10:37 on 21 January 2012

Jarl Distractions

It isn't just Idgrod that provides the distractions. There are different dialogue sets for the following:

MQ201PartyIgmund
MQ201PartyIdgrod
MQ201PartySiddgeir
MQ201PartyBalgruuf
MQ201PartyElisif
MQ201PartyOrthus
MQ201PartyOndolemar
MQ201PartyMaven
MQ201PartyVittoria

I'll put it on my to-do list, but anyone can add the info if they want. elliot (talk) 09:24, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Well, in my game of these only Maven, Ondolemar and Idgrod were at the party at all, with Maven and Ondolemar having special dialogue but no distraction option (maybe I've not been far enough into the Thieves Guild questline for Maven to trigger). Possibly, since I was Thane of all the holds except Windhelm, you will get only one Jarl who would be willing to help you with Idgrod being the default (and with her hold the most easy one to become Thane in, possibly for most other players as well). Or they just recorded dialogue which then isn't used in game. --Ulkomaalainen 01:27, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
From that list I had Idgrod, Orthus, Ondolemar, Maven, and of course, Elisif. I had never met Idgrod before, and she had no option for creating a distraction. I am Thane of Whiterun, so if there's any kind of helpful Jarl trigger, I would assume my party would have had Balgruuf instead. Orthus was there, and could provide a distraction, since I finished Rise in the East. Maven I've only spoken to a few times, so again, no distraction. I think it's more likely that the dialogue for the other Jarls was recorded, but isn't used. If anyone has had a Jarl other than Idgrod show up, please chime in. EmmBee 06:25, 23 January 2012 (UTC)
Might be a possiblity that some Jarls (particularly Balgruuf) only show up depending on the status of the Imperial and/or Stormcloak questlines? I'll attempt to test this and report back, but if someone else has the time, please, carry on. — Unsigned comment by 209.184.52.182 (talk) at 15:59 on 21 February 2012

No Key?

I have looted all the guards for the 5th time now and no key. Is this because the prisoners there died? Help :( — Unsigned comment by 63.141.18.171 (talk) at 20:33 on 29 December 2011

Fury works on one guy.

Fury will work on the guy who stays closest to you. If you cast fury to him, he will be killed by the other guy. Take his armor and put it on. You can walk without sneaking through the wizard as soon as he only sees your back, not your face. --Joshua.yathin.yu 16:47, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Fast traveling out

If for whatever reason you decide to fast travel out of the Thalmor Embassy during the quest, you can't get back in unless you use glitches. — Unsigned comment by 2.102.108.164 (talk) at 15:32 on 2 January 2012

Sneaking Weapons into the party!

If you have started a quest that involves having a weapon as a quest item, such as Alessandra's Dagger or the Grand Staff of Charming, there will be a bug when you arrive in your party clothes at the embassy. When melbourne tries to take your weapons and smuggle them in and delphine will, but they still cannot remove quest items/Since quest items can't be removed from your inventory, You will see the weapons strapped to your thigh. Yet, the Thalmor dont seem to notice this at all. — Unsigned comment by Fudgyfawfulcookie (talkcontribs) at 17:43 on 8 January 2012

Malborn

When taking the carriage from Solitude to the Thalmor Ambassadors mannor. Malborn doesn't spawn and the objective marker is placed at an unknown location on the map. No Guard to Unlock Door

I've seen a couple reports of people not being able to do this quest if they have killed soldiers past the gate before doing this quest. The guards will eventually respawn but they will all just say things like "You're the one who hurt me before, aren't you?" and no one is there to take your invite. Well if you have this problem and have a save from before you talk to Delphine to take the cart, you have a solution! Watch this Youtube video. Then you need to fast travel to the Embassy and do this trick on the front gate and then on the wall shown in the video. You should be able to pick the bowl back up through the gate if you do it on the right half of the gate (or just bring two bowls). Once you're past the gate it might be possible to get your stuff from Malborn's chest if you talked to him (I didn't bother giving him anything once I figured this out), but you'll need to go get the dossier on Esbern by yourself without any quest arrows helping you (and you might as well get the unusual gem while you're here.) Oddly enough, most Thalmor are not hostile if you do it this way, but the Thalmor Soldier in the dungeon has a tendency to hit Rarnis so hard he disappears, even if she isn't hostile to you. Once you read the book on Esbern, the quest will advance to "Escape from the Thalmor Embassy" and you'll be able to continue like normal. While this will let you continue the main quest, I don't know if this will have any effect on any of the party guest's dialogue afterwards. Hope this helps someone. 99.51.148.148 12:45, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Disguised as a Thalmor? Plus comments on main article

When I did this quest, I had a very hard time evading the guards in the outdoor courtyard (I feel this should be changed in the main article, which states they can be easily evaded. It was pretty well impossible and I was wearing all Nightingale armor and have a sneak skill of 98). After several reloads, and on a whim, I put on hooded Thalmor robes, Thalmor boots and Thalmor gloves, and sneaked out into plain sight. The eye indicator went immediately to detected, then back to hidden. I stood up (ie. no longer sneaking) and the guards let me walk right by them. They asked to see my face, but did not attack. I was able to walk right by the wizard at the door to the solar, but was immediately attacked once I entered the solar. I reloaded and was unable to get this to work again. My question is, are you supposed to be able to disguise yourself like that or was that a glitch? Or was it a glitch that I couldn't get it to work again? The guards seemed to have dialogue that was specific to that situation, eg. asking to see my face. A related question: is there a stealthy method that actually works? It seems as if it's impossible to do this in any manner other than combat, and I definitely did not give Malborn equipment that was geared towards combat. Obax 03:04, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Also note that the article says that reading the documents retrieved in the dungeon is the trigger for the guards appearing with Malborn. For me, at least, this was not true, as they appeared before I could read the documents. Obax 03:21, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

1)Every time I've done the quest (and I've played it 7 times) the final two guards would never show until I actually opened up Esbern's Dossier. I've even used it to my advantage by getting into position before reading the book so that I could ambush them. 2)The Hooded Thalmor Robes (not the regular ones) are intended to work as a disguise for most of the mission. 3)Busting a Rambo and storming through the place taking out everybody is absolutely the best way to go since it makes no difference in the end what you do. No worries, if anything the game doesn't give you enough chances to smash some Thalmor face. — Unsigned comment by 206.76.160.254 (talk) at 01:05 on 14 January 2012

Malborn missing

Malborn was missing from behind the counter, so I could not proceed the quest. Thankfully, it was easily solved with the following console input which returned Malburn:

"player.placeatme 00036194"

However, Malburn's quest script seems to be inactive - he doesn't open the door after a distraction is caused... — Unsigned comment by 110.3.47.80 (talk) at 09:49 on 14 January 2012

Amulet of Talos

When I was heading to do this quest, I had 2 Amulet of Talos in my inventory. When I met Delphine, equipped the Party Clothes and she took my stuff, when I get to the embassy, I still have the Amulets on me. Every other item is gone except them. I haave tried this on 3 attempts now and it happens every time. I am wearing the Amulet at the party and nothing seems to have differed so far. I wonder why you're allowed to keep them though...? Rukaven 18:57, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

I also think it's kinda funny since they have banned Talos worship and you can just trot into their embassy with one of his amulets round your neck. Rukaven 18:57, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
When I did this quest, all the quest items in my inventory were kept -- I had a drum, an Amulet of Talos, Unusual Gems, etc. I'm sure this is because if you were to fast-travel out or escape from the Embassy prior to completing the quest, it would be a major loophole as to removing these "locked" items. One could easily just not pick them back up again after retrieving all your other items, and since you can never get back into the Embassy, it would spawn many un-completable quests due to missing items. 70.56.49.158 08:31, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
There's a bug that causes Amulets of Talos to get stuck in your inventory as quest items, even when you don't have the relevant quest. Kind of annoying, since it's just a miscellaneous fetch quest in Solitude. Anyway, you've probably got that bug, so the Amulets stayed in your inventory like all the other quest items do. Malborn not in winking skeever

Malborn is not in The Winking Skeever. Attempting to center the map on the quest objective doesn't work, no console commands to reset the quest or setstage do not work at all (game does not say they aren't valid, just nothing happens, and attempting to spawn Malborn or moveto Malborn do not work either). Malborn Glitch

On this page it mentions a glitch that causes Malborn to not open the door out of the kitchen in the Thalmor Embassey. All is says is "no solution known". Anyone have any ideas on what is going on? Try waiting, leaving the party and coming back or attacking and yielding to Malborn. If that doesn't work you may need to reload. After 180hrs of gameplay doing one quest again shouldn't be too big of a problem. RIM 10:38, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Where Delphine Puts Your Stuff

After using ctrl+f on this page, I finally found out that someone does indeed mention: "When you return to Delphine with the information, don't forget to take your items from the chest in her secret basement." in the note section. However, I strongly suggest this also gets mentioned in the Detailed Walkthrough at least once, if not twice (a mention of it when she first takes the items toward the beginning of the walkthrough and a mention of it at the end of the quest). I imagine most people would think she would give you your items back directly, upon speaking to her at the end of the quest. — Unsigned comment by 69.205.180.81 (talk) at 07:48 on 23 February 2012
