Console Command[edit]

Haming adoptable?[edit]

Torolf and his wife were killed at Helgen and Froki (hopelessly) ran out of the house and got crushed by a giant. I feel sorry for Haming so I would like to adopt him. Hmm, Haming may be un-adoptable. Not all the children are. Froki would be his last living relative, if he's dead and Haming isn't giving you adoption dialogue then he's not adoptable. --Morrolan (talk) 04:34, 9 April 2013 (GMT)
If it's based on the relationships set up in the game, Haming is not technically related to Froki. I mean, lore-wise he is, of course, but they didn't set it up in the CK. He's also not related to Torolf (or in fact anyone else) in the CK. So if adoption is based on the relationships set up in the CK, I'd say that Haming is almost certainly not adoptable, since he has none. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 12:52, 9 April 2013 (GMT)

Not sure its a bug[edit]

The page makes note that housecarls and the bard and stewards may sleep in the kids beds and not allow you to adopt children. My people are always sleeping in those beds, but its never prevented me from adopting children. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 03:23 on 10 January 2013

Setting children as adoptable with the console[edit]

Through digging through the creation kit and messing with console commands I have found out how to make any child adoptable. While this may lead to bugs (Mila seems to leave our house in Whiterun to vanish completely until dinner), I believe that it is noteworthy information.

Simply select a child with the console (preferably one whose parents/guardians have been disposed of), note the ID that comes up, and type these commands: setrelationshiprank [Child ID] 4, setrelationshiprank player 4, addfac xx004290 1. They should now give the adoption dialogue. They should act as any other child as long as they share a voice with an adoptable child.

Another noteworthy bit of information is the BYOHRelationshipAdoptableFaction faction found in the creation kit, which has an ID of 3004290. The only members are the children in honorfall orphanage and the urchins added by hearthfire. — Unsigned comment by (talk) at 19:00 on 13 January 2013

Moving Children[edit]

If you're married, just tell your spouse that you want to live in another house. She'll take care of it. I've had one family live in 5 different houses. (Something to do is also ask your spouse how the kids are - depending on where you live, she'll have a unique response. Is this question unique to Hearthfire homes? In many hundred hours of play on several different character builds, I have never once seen the dialogue option to ask a child OR a spouse about the home we live in, I would like more information about this. Moving your spouse isn't unique to Hearthfire homes. However, Hearthfire adds a question you can ask your spouse, if you have children, which is how are the kids? Your spouse gives a response based on where your family is located. --Morrolan (talk) 12:51, 10 April 2013 (GMT)

Is this a bug.[edit]

Heljarchen Hall[edit]

You need to either have the two single beds in the Main Hall constructed with the two end tables, or if you have built the bedrooms extension you need to build the two child's beds there with the child's chests in order to move children in (well, you only need one child's bed/single bed if you have only one child I think). --Morrolan (talk) 13:25, 10 April 2013 (GMT)

Pocket money[edit]

Maybe I'm being blind but I didn't see any mention of the kids asking for money. Sophie asked me "Papa, could I have some gold?" or something like that and there were several options from one piece to a thousand and I gave her 25. She just said thanks and that was that but then I noticed she had all these new things in her chest that I'm guessing she bought with it. She hasn't asked me since but it wasn't long after I asked her to do her chores. I asked Hroar to do his chores but he hasn't asked me yet.

This happen to anyone else? I think if it happens again I'm going to save and reload trying all the options. then I think it could be included on the main page if the responses are different. Mrjack (talk) 18:11, 27 February 2013 (GMT)

When you give your child 1000 gold (I'm gonna spoil this kid!) they are extremetly surprised and claim they could buy the whole market.

Pet frostbite spider[edit]

Is frostbite spider a potential pet? I've checked the BaseIDs of other five pets(fox, snow fox, mud crab, rabbit, skeever) and their IDs are sequential.There is no available ID nearby for a pet frostbite spider. All of the childs' pets have names, right? So it wouldn't just be a regular "Frostbite Spider". Looking in the CK, the only named frostbite spider I can find is Lis, who's a pet of the Dark Brotherhood (and not added by Hearthfire). The only animals I can find that ARE added by HF are Biter the Skeever, Cotton the Rabbit, Kit the Fox, Pincer the Mudcrab, and Vix the Snow Fox. There's also a couple horses, presumably the ones your Steward can buy. (The cow and chickens must just be regular non-HF varieties.) And there's a tame, nameless skeever, mudcrab and slaughterfish, which I'm not sure are actually seen in the game, but might have to do with the Windstad fishery. And a wolf and a giant which are also unnamed (and hostile). That's it. There are definitely no frostbite spiders added by HF. — TheRealLurlock (talk) 01:21, 7 March 2013 (GMT)

We do have a pet skeever now. But I don't think it has anything to do with these hostile ones in the celler. The pet skeever is unique and will never turn hostile. What's more, your children may pet any animals regardless of where they live. My children live in Whiterun, but they find a snow fox as a pet. Dreamshadow (talk) 15:36, 8 April 2013 (GMT)
A snow fox in Whiterun is not that weird, it's just a bit south of the Mzark area which has them. It'd be pretty weird in Markarth or by the house in Falkreath though. --Morrolan (talk) 04:28, 9 April 2013 (GMT)

doing the orphaning[edit]

is there a penalty for killing a child's parents yourself? i was planning on adopting knud... i killed katla (hidden, no bounty added), while knud and snilling were indoors. when i went inside to kill snilling, neither he nor knud would talk to me except to taunt me (as though they knew i had killed katla). if i had managed to kill snilling without being caught, would the dialogue to adopt knud even appear? if not, how exactly can i do this differently to adopt him? 18:44, 15 March 2013 (GMT)

A new section is needed
Should we add a new section for the interaction with your adopted children? For example, pets, allowances, gifts, arguements, games... Now, we have too much notes about these things. I would agree that a lot more information is needed regarding adoption details and interactions. Back when Hearthfire was first released on Xbox only, my intention was to eventually move the SR:Adoption redirect to its own page, but I never got around to it, and editors have just been adding information to where it already exists. I put a {{split}} tag on the page for users to add input and discuss doing so here on this talk page. With the various new dialogue, games, the gifting interactions back & forth between children and the player, pets, etc., I think there's definitely enough information about adoption to make SR:Adoption its own page. — ABCface 03:03, 17 March 2013 (GMT)

I don't know who is working on creating the adoption page at this moment. I've created a sandbox for collecting various dialogues of adopted children and made some progress. Moved Bug[edit]

  • While you are playing games with your children, you can not use alchemy labs.

Well, I've checked it several times in game (V1. with DG HF DB, no mod). Here is a detailed walkthrough and results of my test. My two children live in Breezewind Home, so I tried to use the alchemy lab in Arcadia's Cauldron. I asked my chilren to play hide-and-seek with me. I found one of them successfully then I was found by them. At this stage, there are two lines of scripts on the screen "You're it, find someone!"(This is the KEY!). During this stage, I can open the interface of alchemy, however it will soon disappear. Otherwise, it will function normally Dreamshadow (talk) 23:48, 23 March 2013 (GMT)

Nope, without the console, that'd pretty much certainly be impossible. Now, you could just move all your stuff into a new house and "abandon" them in the old house. (You can imagine that your housecarl and/or steward will take care of them if it eases your conscience.) Unfortunately, you'll have to also leave your spouse if you have one, because the children will always use the same "home" location as your spouse. If your spouse is a follower, of course, this isn't an issue as they can just stay with you all the time. But sorry to say (?), that's the closest you can get to being a deadbeat dad/mom in the game. Not entirely impossible....if you take your spouse ( hopefully a follower) and go outside, save in new spot, then uninstall Hearthfire and reload save all you lose is some food items. Be sure to not be using the built houses as your storage though for you will lose evertything inside oviously. Then save again and reinstall Hearthfire. Toys for boys and girls (specifically, the wooden sword)[edit]

I would just like to point out that the Wooden Sword is not restricted to boys. I've given Sofie, Lucia, and Sissel the Wooden Sword (even improved via Smithing) and they will accept it, say thanks, and practice with it. Of course, I prefer to give them much deadlier weapons. I have yet to try to give the Child's Doll to a boy, so I'm not sure it's impossible, but it is definitely possible to give a Wooden Sword to a girl. 12:11, 30 March 2013 (GMT)

Comment When Item Bought Nearby[edit]

I was in Riverwood buying some stuff from Alvor. Dorthe was nearby of course, and when I bought a steel ingot she said something along the lines of "I was just about to get that myself". I don't know the full dialogue she gave me, but I never saw it happen before and it isn't listed on her page. Is this something specific to children or was this just a mix-up of dialogue? I was about to post about Dorthe myself when I saw your comment, Daniel. I was sneaking through Riverwood and she said "Are you in trouble? Is that why you're hiding?" There are hundreds of lines like this "hidden" in the game, because they are triggered by a combination of different triggers. The hiding line requires you to be sneaking and can be spoken by anyone with the FemaleChild voicetype, of which there are 19 people. I can't find anything close to the line above (I was just about to get that myself), and it would be a little weird for a child to say it, but unless a more accurate quote can be provided it is impossible to track it down and look at the conditions for it to be said. Interaction children with parents[edit]

I noticed that have children comments about their parents related to their location. For example, I noticed that Runa commented on how she could help her father(Marcurio) to learn fishing(location Lakeview manor). I also saw in one of the youtube video some comments. Take a look at the Adoption page. If the dialogue is used by multiple children then it belongs there, if it is specific to a particular child it would go on their own individual NPC page. — ABCface 15:30, 3 August 2013 (GMT)

First of all, please have patience. There is no need to make three different sections for the same topic in less than two hours. As for your question, the Console page lists many different commands you can use in your game. The one that stands out in this case is disable (since children cannot die without mods, the kill command won't work). There may be a more complicated way to "un-adopt" a child, but I'm not sure what it would be. — ABCface 12:48, 26 August 2013 (GMT)

Unadoptable children[edit]

Why are there missing data question marks for some of the unadoptable children? As far as I can see, the reason why the majority of them are unadoptable is due to an essential parent (or parents). For the record, all of the children with missing data tags are listed below:

  • Agni - unadoptable because Falion is essential.
  • Dagny, Frothar and Nelkir - unadoptable because Jarl Balgruuf is essential.
  • Assur - unadoptable because both Jarl Korir and Thaena are both essential.
  • Joric - unadoptable because both Jarl Idgrod and Aslfur are both essential.
  • Virkmund - unadoptable because Thonnir is essential.
  • Adara - unadoptable because both Endon and Kerah are both essential.
  • Kayd - I'm not actually sure why Kayd is listed as completely unadoptable; he should be for an Imperial-aligned player as Sayma is not essential, and Beirand is only essential until you get your Imperial Legion armour. I haven't tested this yet though.
  • Skuli - his page states that he is actually adoptable, as long as both Eydis and Leontius Salvius are dead; I'll check whether this is the case. If so, then it's possible that Leontius acts as a guardian in the father role to Skuli, the same as Falion does to Agni, preventing him from being adopted.
  • Bottar and Sond - to tell the truth, I haven't even seen these two in my own gameplay, so I can't even speculate as to why they aren't adoptable.

As above, I'll test out Kayd and Skuli when I get the chance, and if anyone can shed light on the Bottar/Sond situation, I'd be grateful. Otherwise, I don't see what the confusion is here. --Lady Azura (talk) 22:01, 8 November 2013 (GMT)

I get why the mark is there for Kayd. I included him along with Skuli, Bottar and Sond for the sake of keeping the list complete. My point was intended more for the other children on the list - is it not fairly obvious that they can't be adopted if they have a living relative that is marked as essential? Hence, do they really need the missing data tag?
At this point, I've tested Kayd and Skuli. Skuli is definitely adoptable as per his page and he considers Leontius Salvius as a guardian for the purposes of adoption, so I'll edit the page to reflect this. Despite having killed both Beirand and Sayma (with no witnesses) Kayd seems extremely upset as though he witnessed the crime. He doesn't relocate to Riften at all, and will instead remain in Bits and Pieces on his own. I can't investigate any further on this matter because I don't have the Creation Kit to look at his programming in detail. Child Races?[edit]

I think some of the races might be wrong. for example Francois is a Breton name, but he's listed as Imperial. Not that it really matters much considering they all look the same. even the Redguard children look the same. Telrav (talk) 14:57, 3 May 2014 (GMT)

Any races not derived directly from game data follow the Notes on Racial Phylogeny, where a child always takes their mothers race. In Francois' case his race is given in the game data. Assigning race by name is just wrong, there are a number of cases of people in the Elder Scrolls games having atypical racially stylized names. Dialogue Bug[edit]

Do you... Do you have a place I could live? Will cutoff the dialogue between the PC and an adoptable child. Seems to happen for the second one you try to adopt only and makes adopting more than one child impossible. Children Become Tall?[edit]

On Pc. Gifts "too heavy" for my adopted kid[edit]

Hey there! I need to know how to unlock my kids inventory in order to give them gifts. Everytime I try to give a gift it shows "too heavy to carry" I´m guessing this specific kid might be still carring those flowers of hers, making impossible to recieve my gifts for her.
