Dream-Walk Into Darkness[edit]

You first see Wylon Montclair in the vision, where his wife is dying:

"Leila doesn't have much time. I know it. She knows it. She's trying to be so strong, but ….
I swore I would never ask this of you. It goes against everything I believe in. But damn it, she's my wife! I don't want to lose her."
No, my friend. You can't ask that of me ….
"I know, I know. You swore an oath. No one should ever have to endure the things you've gone through because of what you are.
But you're alive! That's more than my wife will be if you don't help her."
She deserves a better fate than becoming a vampire.
"You can't make that decision for her. Neither can I. But you can give her a chance.
I know you care about her. You can't just stand there and watch her die!"
You're right. Let me ask Leila what she wants to do.
"Thank you. I know she'll make the right decision.
She may no longer be the woman I know, but at least she'll be alive. she'll be with me. I can still love her.
No, Wylon, I won't turn Leila into a vampire. We'll find another way.
"There is no other way!
Bah! I don't know why I waste my time with you. Sometimes you're as heartless as the monster so many purport you to be."

If you chose to try to give Leila a choice:

"You have to convince Leila to do this. It's the only way we can save her.
Tell her I'll love her, no matter what. She'll always be my wife."

If you chose to not turn Leila:

"If you won't help her, I'll find another way. I have to.
I won't lose Leila, Verandis. I can't!"

During the next memory, the Baron is celebrating Verandis's "cure" for his wife's ailments.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "Three cheers for Verandis! He gave me the means to save my beautiful wife!"
Baroness Leila Montclair: "Yes, to our dear friend, Verandis! How can we ever repay him?"

Speaking to the Baron before Verandis, he'll say:

"This will work, my old friend. We're going to save Leila, I just know it!"

After speaking to Verandis, he'll add:

"Verandis, my friend! You really must allow your charges to get out and have a little fun every now and then. Poor Gwendis here is having a splendid time, but it's like she's never tasted a fine wine before.
Why not pull up a chair and join us?"
Wylon, we need to talk about this.
"Oh, not that again, Verandis. And especially not now. We're having a celebration! Leila is on the mend. She's getting well!
I have my wife back and it's all thanks to that remarkable piece of stone you gave me."
Your Argonian found it, not me.
"What does that matter? If not for you, I would never have attempted to use such magic to heal Leila.
Besides, Reezal-Jul will be rewarded for his service. I'll see to that personally."
But Reezal-Jul never mentioned the stone?
"He was always bringing me tinctures and alchemical concoctions. It was one wild plan after another with him. It always is.
But because of your quick thinking, we applied the power of the stone. And now we're celebrating our success!"
Leila is feeling that much better?
"Better? Yes, but she's not fully healed as yet. It's just a matter of time, I'm sure. But she's out of bed. She's even painting again. She hasn't done that in … I can't remember how long.
Soon, it will be as if nothing had ever happened."
There's something about that stone. It worries me.
"My good Verandis, it wouldn't be a day if you weren't concerned about something. It's your nature!
Now, stop asking such bleak questions and just be thankful this relic fell into our hands. It's helping. That's all that matters."

During the third memory, the group is climbing the Doomcrag.

Baroness Leila Montclair: "We shouldn't have left the guards behind, Weylon. Who knows what else we're going to run into?"
Lleraya Montclair: "There was no choice, Mother. You're getting worse and we can't wait for them."
Gwendis: "I'll stay here and protect the way out. Keep watch in case the guards catch up with us. The rest of you need to keep moving."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Thank you, Gwendis. At least you retain a sense of honor."
Baroness Leila Montclair: "Wylon, you have to stop blaming Verandis. This wasn't his fault."

Upon entering the Doomcrag, the group will be suddenly attacked by Ancient Warriors:

Baron Wylon Montclair: "Ayleid skeletons, undead spirits—it doesn't matter. Nothing is going to stand in our way!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Leila, wait until we clear the way."

You have the chance to speak with the Baron a few times:

"These animated bones—why do they seek to keep us from the relic? Are they the lingering remains of the Ayleids who once dwelled here, do you think?
Well, they won't stop me. No matter what their reasons are, my cause is greater."
Are you sure you want to go through with this, Wylon?
"I have never been more sure of anything in my life, Verandis.
I will sacrifice everything, risk anything, to save the woman I love. A shame the same can't be said of all of us."
I only did what Leila asked. She was worried about you!

If you chose to turn Leila into a vampire
If you chose not to turn Leila
"You did what Leila wanted? What about what I wanted? You allowed her to talk you out of it when I expressly asked you to turn her!
Well, I'm done asking. We're here because of you, and we're going to do exactly as I say. We're going to save my wife."
"You did what Leila wanted? What about what I wanted? I asked you to do something and you refused!
Well, I'm done asking. Now we do exactly as I say and, with or without your help, we save my wife."

I'm sorry it's come to this.
"Sorry won't help us here. We have to find the Ayleid relic. That's all that matters now.
Just remember, we're out of options. This is our last chance to save Leila and I won't let you ruin it, vampire!"

The group climbs higher.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "What a magnificent structure! The relic this monolith houses must be powerful indeed!"
Baroness Leila Montclair: "Wylon, my love, I'm afraid."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Hurry, Leila. Trust me. Soon you will be healed and we can put this terrible episode behind us."

Near the summit:

Baron Wylon Montclair: "This is it. The relic is just beyond this door!"

Speak with him here:

"We've done it! We've reached the top of the Doomcrag! Now we can finally learn the secret of the ancient Ayleid relic and save my wife."
I can sense the power of this relic. It doesn't feel particularly benign to me.
"Your fear colors your perception, Verandis. It is merely the pulse of ancient magicka, the heartbeat of a powerful relic.
Our intentions are pure. We seek only to save my beloved's life. These creatures have no reason to stop us."
Wylon, we need to be cautious. Something isn't right here.
"Has your courage deserted you, vampire? You discovered the relic's resting place, and I thank you for that. But right now we have to reach the relic chamber and save my wife.
After that, you can do what you want. Now let's go."

Reaching the relic chamber:

"By the Eight! Can you feel the relic's power, Verandis?"
This power. Something about it feels wrong to me.
"Enough of your constant mewling, Verandis! Are you a vampire or a scullery maid? This is exactly what we've been looking for!
You told me yourself. The Ayleid texts referred to the latta—the light. This is it. This is what will cure Leila."
We never learned why the Ayleids hid this relic within this desolate tower.
"We don't know why the Ayleids did a lot of things. They were a strange people. But that won't stop us. Stand back and watch, for all I care. But we're going to save my wife!
I'll risk my life—my very soul—to help my dear Leila. Now, let's begin."

The ritual begins.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "Have no fear, my darling Leila. Soon the light will wash away your pain."
Reezal-Jul: "It's going to work, Baron. The power of this ancient Ayleid remnant … it's almost overwhelming."
Lleraya: "You're going to be all right, Mother. Just hold on."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "The remnant will make you like new, my love! You'll be reborn!"
Lleraya: "Something's... happening. I feel … the power!"
Baroness Leila Montclair: "Wylon! Something feels … wrong …."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Verandis, we need you! We need your power! Quickly! Touch the relic and help us!"

As the Baron begins to chant, the Baroness begins to shiver and twitch.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "Anyamis alata! Malatua latta mitta jorane mori!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Vasha anya belda sancre!"
Lleraya: "Father … what … what's happening to us?"
Reezal-Jul: "It's working! It's working! Soon the power will be ours to command!"

With Verandis having touched the remnant, the Montclairs are turned into vampires. Leila is in immense pain.

Baroness Leila Montclair: "No! What … what have you done? This isn't me! I … I never wanted this!"
Baroness Leila Montclair: "Please, Verandis. Help me! Make it stop! I … I can't stand the pain."
Baroness Leila Montclair: "End this, Verandis! End this before I … arrgh!"

Verandis slays the Baroness to end her pain, but it's not over yet.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "No! Verandis! What did you do to Leila? What did you do?"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "You'll pay for that, vampire! I have the power now. Nothing can stop me from reaching out and snapping …."
Gwendis: "Verandis? Montclair, no! Come on, Verandis, we need to get out of here!"
Cursed Baron Wylon Montclair

The Lightless Remnant[edit]

The Baron appears during your climb up the Doomcrag.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "Welcome, Verandis! And like a good guest, I see you've brought me gifts to play with."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Allow me to grant my blessing to your army."
Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "This is exactly what I feared! He's turned our own troops into bloodfiends!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "How does it feel to watch those who you care about turn against you, Verandis? How does it feel?"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "My wife … my daughter … you've taken everything I've ever loved, Verandis!"
Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "Wylon, I'm sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "My daughter loved you, Verandis. She loved you!"
Gwendis: "The Remnant … the power. It drove Lleraya insane! Are those giant skeletons?"

You will be forced to fight a bone colossus.

Baron Wylon Montclair: "You've grown strong, Verandis. Your allies grant you strength."
Baron Alard Dorell: "Come out and face us, you coward! You can't hide from us forever!"
Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "Wylon, please. We can find a way to free you from this power."
Baron Wylon Montclair: "To what end, my old friend? My wife is dead. My daughter, killed by your own hand. What do I have, if not this power?"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "I think I'd prefer to let you experience my pain. My suffering. To let you see what it's like to lose everything you hold dear!"
Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "No, Montclair! Stop this madness!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Come, Gwendis. You look famished. Allow me to prepare you a feast fit for my new queen!"
Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "No, Montclair! Please!"

During the battle:

Baron Wylon Montclair: "I'll make you pay for taking my daughter's life!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "Let the power of the Remnant wash over you!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "The Remnant and I are one! Its power flows through me!"
Baron Wylon Montclair: "These mortal trappings mean nothing! There is no hope for any of you!"

Upon his death:

Baron Wylon Montclair: "You have ended me but doomed Rivenspire! Let the power of the Remnant burst free!"

Notes[edit]

  • Wylon will barely fight back when fighting him in the Relic Chamber.
  • Baron Montclair's role in Rivenspire's questline was much different in an earlier draft of the story: the villain was a vampire named Karnosis Xane (sometimes misspelled as "Karnoris"), whom Baron Montclair served. Reezal-Jul was called Tainted-Heart, and Baroness Leila Montclair was one Leila Xane. Lleraya (occasionally referred to as "Veraya" in a few instances) was a Dark Elf. Tainted-Heart, Lleraya, and Karnosis were in the Mages Guild together.
