Something strange is happening in Shademist Moors. The village of Longhaven needs someone who can uncover what might be behind it.


Quick Walkthrough[edit]

  1. Talk to Breduin.
  2. Talk to Mel Adrys.
  3. Go to the vampires' lair.
  4. Talk to Gadinas and decide whether or not to kill him.
  5. Kill the three vampires and destroy the source of the mist.
  6. Return to Longhaven.

Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Enthralling Mist[edit]

You can begin this quest by talking to Heluin outside Longhaven. He warns you: "Turn back. That way's bad omens. Even the air's turned against them in Longhaven." Ask him what he means, and he explains: "The moors have always been a wild place, covered in thick fog. But for us who've known them our whole lives, it's home. Now, though, people've been disappearing into the mist. We find their bodies later, torn up and drained of blood." Ask him what the cause is, and he replies: "It's a reckless curiosity drives a person to look for cause in such things. Me, I'll take ignorance and a long, happy life in Marbruk or Woodhearth. But if you got to know, you might talk to Breduin in his hut in town. He's staying, poor fool." Tell him you'll speak to Breduin, and head into Longhaven. Breduin is inside the pod hut on the right. Enter, and talk to him. He says: "Welcome to Longhaven. Used to be a busier place, before all this trouble with the mist. But we won't let that be an excuse for poor hospitality." Ask him about the mist, and he explains: "Started a few weeks ago now, when the mist ... changed. Turned a sickly color." Ask him what happened, and he replies, "All I know is what I saw with my own eyes. Hunters simply dropping their bows and wandering unarmed into the moors as if bewitched. Then their bodies turn up later, or what's left of them. Can't explain it. Except ...." Ask him what he means, and he says, "A wanderer much like yourself—a dour Dunmer fellow—passed through here. Bought supplies and headed straight into the moors, my warnings be damned. Seemed like he knew something. You want to figure this out, I'd start by finding that Dunmer." This Dunmer can be found in Shademist Moors.

Ride or walk south of Longhaven to the Shademist Moors. Go to where the quest marker is, and you will find a small camp with a Dunmer named Mel Adrys sitting by the fire. Talk to him, and he says, "Begone. I must finish my prayers and purify my spirit before I meet my foes in battle." Ask him why he's in the moors, and he explains, "I have been tracking my prey for many nights. A heathen vampire who shall soon be cleansed from this world. I thought him alone, but now that I see this place I suspect a lair is hidden nearby. He shall regret leading me to his vile nest." Ask him if a vampire's presence would explain the mist, and he concedes, "I have hunted them all my life, and yet I have never seen magic such as this. I do feel their touch upon it. I feel it testing my will with every step I take. But I shall not falter. I shall face these creatures and leave nothing but ash behind." Ask him if you can accompany him, and he says, "No fear. Bravery, or foolish inexperience? I cannot trust one who could become enthralled at any moment. Prove to me you have the will to resist this foul magic. Find me at the lair up the hill east of here. Then I shall consider it." He then teleports away to the lair.

Uncovering the Mystery[edit]

Head south-east of the camp, and up the hill using the windy path. You come across a cave entrance. Note that there is a body outside the cave which you can examine to begin the quest Deadly Ambition. Regardless of whether you pick up this additional quest, enter Shademist Enclave, the vampire lair. Go down the passageway from the entrance and find Mel Adrys next to a weakened vampire, Gadinas. Talk to him, and he greets you. "So you made it through the mist. Your will is stronger than I expected." Ask him who the other person is, and he replies, "Vampire scum. He barely put up a struggle before he fell to his knees, begging for what he calls a life. I did not expect such weakness. I will finish him now, if you'd be so kind as to step aside." Ask him if this is the one he was hunting, and he replies, "No. This pathetic being is hardly even worthy of my blade. The one I followed here is called Faenir; a much more formidable foe than this maggot, I assure you. We shall meet him soon enough. He and all of his coven shall die." Tell him that the vampire may have important information and ask to speak to him. He replies, "As you wish. In this moment or the next, his existence shall end either way. But be wary. A vampire attempts to sway and beguile with its words. Do not listen, no matter what he says."

Speak to Gadinas, and he pleads, "You must have mercy! The Dark Elf won't listen, but you will, won't you? We were different! I didn't want this!" Ask him what he means and he replies, "Kept to ourselves. Didn't prey on the living! The beasts, the hoarvor glutted themselves on the blood of hunters. We fed on them. We didn't kill anyone. It was a natural way. Until he came." Ask him who "he" is and he explains, "The veiled one. Altmer, I think. Sought an alliance. Promised power. Told us we didn't need to hide anymore. Others in my clan agreed. He taught them a ritual using an ancient vampire's skull. Said it would allow them to make countless thralls." Ask him how to put a stop to this magic, and he tells you, "The skull rests in the back of this cavern. Its curse seeps into the mists all around us. Destroy the skull and the magic goes with it. I never wanted this. Spare me and I can bring others to my side. We can be of use to you!" Ask him if Faenir was one of those who accepted this offer, and he says, "Yes, he was the loudest of the supporters along with Athraedal and Lathriel. I saw them speaking with the veiled one often. They'd never listen to me. You'll have to go through them if you want to reach the skull. Now please, just let me go."

Clearing the Lair[edit]

Talk to Mel Adrys and he says, "Finished with your little chat? I shall relieve him of his head now and rid us of his insufferable mewling." Tell him you might benefit from him being alive, and he says, "Did I not warn you of this? That his vile tongue would worm its way into your thoughts? There's no such thing as a good vampire, just a vampire that has not yet been tempted. Our goals here are the same. Will you forget them for this scum?" You must now decide whether you want him to live or die. If you choose for him to live, Mel Adrys says "I can't oppose you. I don't slay the living, only the dead. Run along, little worm. A brief reprieve only. I'll find you and your kin." Gadinas runs away into the cave. Mel Adrys says, "Now, to Faenir, quickly. My blade does not enjoy being denied a meal." If you allow Mel Adrys to kill him, he will immediately kill him in one hit and say "Ashes and embers."'

You must now go through the cave and kill Faenir, as well as Athraedal and Lathriel, the other supporters of the veiled Altmer Gadinas mentioned. Mel Adrys will follow you and fight with you. Firstly, Athaedal can be found in the north-west corner of the room you are in. Fight and kill her. When she dies, you notice a strange ghostly spirit emerging from her body. Once she is dead, leave this chamber through the eastern passage. Follow the tunnel as it turns right into another room. Fight your way through, taking the western passage around and following it as it takes a sharp turn, going east. Continue down the passage further until you reach a junction. Turn right and go into the large room this path leads you to. Fight through, crossing the bridge over the chasm and going to the small camp on the other side. You find Lathriel there, as well as two spiders. Fight and kill her; you notice a similar ghostly spirit emerge from her body as well. Leave this room the way you came, and go back the junction; this time go east into a huge chamber. Head through to the north-east corner, where you find and kill Faenir. Again, a similar ghostly spirit emerges from his body.

Now that you have killed these three, you can now go and destroy the Skull of Vangarion, therefore dispelling the mist and ending the spell causing the people of Longhaven to become enthralled. Leave through the western passage out of this large room, and follow the passageway as it winds up and over the previous rooms, into a final room in which the ritual is happening. You see the skull in the middle with the three ghostly spirits from earlier surrounding it. Go up to the skull and interact with it to destroy it. Once it is destroyed, go north and leave the lair.

Return to Longhaven[edit]

Now that the mist is gone, you should return to Longhaven and inform Breduin of the good news. Go inside his house and speak to him. He greets you. "It's you again! The hunters say the mist has lost its sickly tint. Did you find the source?" Tell him that vampires were using it to create thralls, and he says, "Vampires, here? Sickening. Hunted in our own hunting grounds. We'll be more vigilant of their kind now. I'll see to it personally that every last one of them is destroyed. Thank you for helping us." He rewards you with some leveled gold and the Longhaven Brigandine.

The residents of Longhaven report that people have been disappearing into the fog over the moors. I've been told to talk to Breduin for more information.
Objective: Talk to Breduin
Breduin told me that a Dunmer went into the mist recently, and it seemed like he knew something about the strange events on the moors. I should find him.
Objective: Search for the Dunmer in the Moors
Mel Adrys is a vampire hunter, who tracked his latest prey to the moors. He suspects an entire lair of vampires is responsible for the strange mist. I should meet him at the lair.
Objective: Reach the Vampire Lair
I met Mel Adrys at the vampire lair. I should speak to him.
Objective: Talk to Mel Adrys
Mel Adrys has already defeated Gadinas, one of the vampires. Gadinas might know something about the strange mist. I should question him.
Objective: Talk to Gadinas
Gadinas has told me that a strange veiled person gave the vampires a skull that is creating the enchanted mist that is luring people into the moors and turning them into thralls. I must now decide Gadinas's fate.
Complete one: Convince Mel Adyris [sic] to Spare Gadinas or Allow Mel Adrys to Kill Gadinas
I should defeat the three leaders of the vampires before destroying the ritual skull that is creating the mist.
