Nothing Left to Waste[edit]

Kotholl will be hiding amongst rocks not far from Scout Mamyne. He will comment on the events of the quest Death Trap, which also takes place in the Obsidian Gorge.

"Kotholl's the name. I was working as a guard in the trading camp before the Maulborn attacked.
This Elven scout was lucky I came along when I did. She was getting her arse handed to her."
How did you survive?
"Did what I was taught to do. When outnumbered, I hide. Not the bravest move, but it kept the two of us alive.
Listen, if you're going down there, I could use your help. I need some things from the camp."
What kind of things?
"Things that are too important to fall into the hands of the Maulborn. They're in three locked chests, so you'll need to get the keys first."
Where can I find the keys?

He will mention the keys lead to important chests that he will not elaborate on:

"Three of the merchants I worked for wore the keys on chains around their necks. They were the first to fall when the Maulborn attacked, but I don't think their bodies were searched very thoroughly."
Why do you need these keys? What's in the chests?
"I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to say.
All I can tell you is I swore to guard those chests with my life. That ought to give you some idea of their importance."

Kotholl's dialogue will be different if you have completed Death Trap.

"Hey! I saw you earlier! Next to the injured elf girl.
Glad you could help her and, well, everyone here. Don't suppose you'd be willing to help me with something as well."
What do you need?
"Well, there are some chests around the camp. Used to be property of my masters. What's inside is too important to fall into the hands of these scavengers, though.
Sadly, I can't get to the keys. That would look too suspicious."
And you want me to do what exactly?
"Well, the keys are still on their bodies you see. Three merchants. All killed in the attack.
If you could grab those keys and get the items from the chests, I'll make sure the goods are taken care of. Please. Do it for the dead."
Fine. I'll take care of it.

After retrieving the items in the three chests, return to Kotholl.

"Did you get the stuff from the locked chests?"
What was so important about these trinkets? Why should I care if the Maulborn got them?
"Um, yeah. Fact is, I kind of lied to you.
Those merchants owed me weeks of back pay, and now they're dead. My family will starve without that money. Those trinkets you recovered may not seem like much, but they'll feed my family for a year."
You should have told me the truth from the beginning.
"I couldn't risk it. I'm sorry I misled you, but I can't let my children go hungry."
Fine, take the trinkets. Just make sure it goes to feed your family.
"I don't know what to say. Thank you.
I'll find a way to make up for this. I swear it."
Return these items to the families of the merchants. Ask them for your back pay.
"Return them to the spoiled children of wealthy merchants? Why should I? They won't miss a few trinkets!"
Return the goods, or I make sure the guards hear of this.
"I … you're right. That stuff doesn't belong to me.
I'll make sure the families get their goods back. And I'm sorry for making up that story."

If you let him keep the items and exit the conversation before turning in the quest, he will alternatively say:

"Let me take these goods back to my family, so they don't starve."
Take it and make sure your family doesn't starve. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

If you told him to return back the items and exit the conversation before turning in the quest, he will alternatively say:

"Let me take these goods back to my family, so they don't starve."
That doesn't make it right. Return the items, or I'll make sure the guards hear of this. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

After the quest if you let him keep the items:

"On my life, I'll make sure this Hlaalu Elf gets out of here safely."

After the quest if you told him to return the items:

"I'll return these goods to the merchants' families, as promised. If I must."

After the quest, you can find him wandering the market in Mournhold:

"What a pleasant surprise! I didn't think you'd get out of that gorge alive, but I'm happy to have been wrong."

Payback[edit]

After you defended the plague was unleashed on the Maulborn, Kotholl will note the chaos:

"Watch yourself out there. Those creatures…it's hard to believe they were once like us."
