The Anonymous Knights[edit]

If any of the Knights of the Nine are killed during this quest, I am aware that an anonymous replacement appears at the Priory of the Nine after this mission is completed. My question is: Do the anonymous Knights respawn if they are killed while following you (The Player)? --Merco 14:12, 22 October 2007 (EDT)

Yes. See also Knight of the Nine. --NepheleTalk 14:55, 8 November 2007 (EST)

Stuck Sir Thedret Doesn't Complete Speech[edit]

I've encountered a bug here; after defeating Umaril 'utterly', I went ahead and stored the relics (my personal stuff is better than those things anyways). One of the Knights ran up to me, stating that he heard some noise coming from the undercroft and went to check. He also claimed that I was dead, followed by some more talk. He then proceeded to run outside to anonymous Knights, and spoke a few words, until a brown bear decided to punch me in the face. It didn't take long for the Knights to take up sword and kill the bear in an orgy of bloodspatter, but after they had returned to their original positions, the Knight that ran up to me just stood there with his arms raised, doing nothing (but breathe, I assume). Reloading a previous save seems the only solution (even though it's a quite odd occurance). --Hugoku 19:25, 30 November 2007 (EST)

Funny, this very same bug occured to me. But stupid me carelessly playing the game. Instead of reloading the last auto save, I wait. Whitch overwrited my autosave. Many game days have passed and they are still standing there. It happened to me because I interacted with one of the knights before the speech ended. And for some reason Sir Thedet (I think thats the name of the speech giver) has disapeared, he doesn't stand there. But the other knights remain in the circle. So I cannot "bump" him. I remember giving him a little shove before he disapeared and he just walked back to his spot. — Unsigned comment by George (talkcontribs) on 24. May 2008
I'm playing the PS3:GoTY version and I have the flapping Sir Thedret issue. I've barged him off of his spot repeatedly but he just goes back and stands there with his arms out over and over. I haven't been able to start the speech over, and my Knights are all standing out in the rain looking pathetic. I think I may have triggered the problem by ignoring his speech and barging off to do something else. By the time I realised there was a problem, my previous save was long gone :( I'd really appreciate any other suggestions anyone has - I feel a bit sorry for them all hanging around watching him wave! Romana03 20:18, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Have you tried hitting him? 24.181.62.15 01:34, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

I have the same problem, but I am able to talk to Sir Thedret and even ask him to be my follower. He will walk around with me normally but when I dismiss him he goes right back to his "speech". Mine triggered when I waited an hour during the speech. Hitting or knocking him out doesn't help.— Unsigned comment by 189.27.9.35 (talk) at 21:08 on 9 January 2014 (GMT)

Sequence Breaking[edit]

Can you destroy Umaril's body before this quest? Helper Unknown 08:54, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

No. The necessary section of Garlas Malatar is sealed off until the quest starts. –RpehTCE 09:10, 16 March 2008 (EDT)
Should someone add this to the notes section?99.237.166.44 21:37, 28 May 2008 (EDT)

Final Battle[edit]

Is it necessary to wear the entire Crusader outfit while battling Umaril? — Unsigned comment by 75.20.132.235 (talk) on 5. April 2008

Apparently not, since I was able to defeat him wearing my own armor and using my own weapons. -Markus — Unsigned comment by 75.20.132.235 (talk) on 6. April 2008
you don't even need to have them in your inventory as i left them all on the ground in the priory (relics as they are they werent worth me showing them off in the crypt) all that is needed is the spell to follow umaril into the afterlife - Zolo — Unsigned comment by 203.26.16.68 (talk) on 28. Tips[edit]

im having a hell load of trouble with this quest ive read all the guides i can find but still no where do i find any tips on how to defeat a swarm of enemies! i just get repeatedly stunned or knocked back, and all my allies do is either get in the way or die! — Unsigned comment by 118.90.81.86 (talk) on 28. May 2008

You don't have to defeat them. Run through the ruin until you reach the orb and then smash it. –RpehTCE 06:50, 28 May 2008 (EDT)

Easy Win[edit]

After retrying because most of my knights died, I just charged through, hitting the switches and not fighting. I got hit once while waiting for the Dark Orb to break up, and all of the knights survived. I only had to fight the 2 Aurorans outside and the 2 right before Umaril — Unsigned comment by 99.230.234.79 (talk) on 3. June 2008

This is basically true for any quest where one has to go through a cave/dungeon. So I don't think it's necessary to menion it on the page. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 16:45, 6 June 2008 (EDT)

Sitting Bug[edit]

Has anyone been able to complete this quest without the sitting animation getting messed up? I feel like it happened with an earlier character, yes despite multiple attempts with my current character the animation always gets screwed up. I think the bug occurs in relation to the afterlife (or the spell that gets you there) since I can still sit in umaril's throne after defeating him the first time. — Unsigned comment by 71.87.112.153 (talk) on 6. September 2008

I also get my sitting animation messed up, although I don't know that it's because of this quest. I know for certain that I can't sit on Sheogorath's throne, I'm not so sure about other seats. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 04:58, 8 September 2008 (EDT)
I'm fairly sure the trigger is the end of KotN (I can sit on the throne right before the end, but not in the priory afterwards), but I'm less sure about what the other variables might be. I've had it happen with two seperate characters, and another was unaffected. I think the two that had problems were both around level 30 when they completed KotN, while the other one was level 12 or 13. Is it possible that having completed certain missions causes this bug to occur when the Umaril is defeated?71.87.112.153 20:17, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I dont care how it's caused, but does anyone know how to fix it?
If I clear the cache so I dont play with the Kotn, save, and then load Kotn again will I be able to sit again?

Sheathing Death[edit]

I've noticed that when falling after defeating Umaril, if I tried to sheath my weapon, I died instantly. Is this because it counted as landing on a solid object somehow? Should it be mentioned on the page? 76.120.103.127 01:48, 22 November 2008 (EST)

Sir Thedret Glitch[edit]

(moved from the article)

There is also a rare bug in which Sir Theredet is, although standing, permanently registered as "unconscious," and will be missing his helmet and ears. This could be an effect of the staff of Sheogorath, or a result of his being knocked unconscious upon triggering the black orb. Though not affected by arrows or magic, he can be killed and his body can be looted. Merely wounding him will not fix the glitch, though it will sometimes replace his helmet. This glitch makes Sir Theredet's speech impossible, and the knights simply wait outside the priory forever. There is no way to fix this glitch as of yet, and even reloading a previous save durring the final battle with Umaril in the spiritual plane does not fix it. <need conformation: found once on Xbox, but have not heard of it before.>

Dialogue Bug[edit]

Upon finishing Umaril the Unfeathered, all knights have a dialogue: "The knights of the nine have prevailed over Umaril. Truly, the gods have shown us favor." However, Sir Thedret and Sir Lathon have it a bit weirder. There is a pause before they say it, and then another pause after finishing, where they say "Pelinal" out of the blue. PS3 GOTY edition. Would like confirmation if this only happens on PS3 GOTY edition, or Xbox 360 versions, or PC.

i know it happens on the xbox 360 version but im not sure about the ps3 or PC versions.

Unique Dialog[edit]

I'm asking here because this is the quest in which the faction rank is given. I did this quest with a character who had not previously done anything with the main quest, aside from giving the amulet to Jauffre. When I went to Kvatch for the first time, and spoke to Ilav Dralgoner, the depressed priest outside of the city, he greeted me specifically as crusader and taunted me as to why I had not helped Kvatch. I haven't been able to find any mention of that in the wiki so far, and I would add it myself, but it happened I'm unsure as to where it would go. Not to mention, my recollection of it is pretty bad. It happened a long time ago.

So, to make sure I'm not crazy, and for the sake of completion, other people have gotten that unique dialog, right? Lovless510 04:52, 8 June 2009 (EDT)

I have not seen this, but I have never been under the circumstances your character has (Divine Crusader prior to Kvatch). I will mark this as a Good Question. --Mr. Oblivion(T-C) 05:14, 8 June 2009 (EDT)
This seems to be related to the effect that the added KotN greetings override some of the default greetings. Which means that you may miss out on a specific greeting (instead of a generic "Hello") with specific characters. There is no greeting mentioning the Divine Crusader and Kvatch in a single line of dialogue, though. --Timenn < talk > 05:36, 8 June 2009 (EDT)

Incidentally, the ghost had nothing in his head[edit]

So, using Deadly Reflexes, I accidentally beheaded Sir Amiel during the group spar match. He didn't die, but instead continuously falls to one knee whenever I speak to him (with no head, mind you). Regardless, I didn't think much of it other than "heeheehee, he got no head!" since the sparing match went on flawlessly despite the headless ghost leader. Now, however, after defeating Umaril, the esteemed Sir Amiel appears to have begrudged me and doesn't start the scripted scene that leads to all the ghosts disappearing. As I said before, stupid me didn't think much of it, and so my earliest save is right before fighting Umaril.

Is there anyway for me to fix this other than start over? Any way to 'delete' Sir Amiel with the console and reenable him? Any Journal code that can help me forcefully start the scripted scene?

Ah, one more thing. doing [setstage ND10 100] set the quest to completed, but did not make the ghosts disappear, plus the Knights did not have the option to follow me. Indeed, Sir Thedret doesn't even run down to check on 'the noise', and is instead standing outside the Priory with the halfcircle of other Knights standing at attention. 67.60.187.161 04:29, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

  • Ah, nevermind. I found out how to get it to work. All I had to do was type in [kill] then quickly type [resurrect] immediately afterward. He respawned with his head on his shoulders and lost the stream of blood spurting from his carotid artery. 67.60.187.161 15:38, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Question on the sitting glitch[edit]

I am aware that the glitch can permanently freeze the finale of the Thieve's Guild, but lets you continue the Shivering Isles (you have to sit at the start).

Are there any other occasions where this glitch stops you completing quests? Also, my character will be a vampire - I know the glitch affects feeding, but does the feeding still happen or does the glitch freeze the game / prevent feeding?

Two swords bug[edit]

Moved from article:

There is a bug related to grabbing two Umaril Swords. When trying to store items afterwards, the stored items disappear. Storing an items in addition to Umaril's sword appears to be a small fix (items do not disappear during this first instance), but storing item(s) in subsequent instances result in the disappearance of the item(s).

Is this not just an instance of the bug of having too many items in a single container? --Timenn-<talk> 18:22, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Incomprehensible bug[edit]

I moved this from the main article as I could not understand a word of it

  • There is a bug that disables all the switch-activated doors to respond the switch is pressed. This is can happen if you talk to the Prophet right before he gives his speech(this disables his speech and the speech of Sir Thedret) The only known fix is to save and restart the console/pc)

It is supposedly fixed by the UOMP but I can't find anything in the UOMP change logs that this might possibly refer to. If anyone knows what this is about could they please explain it more clearly.Rhomphaia 19:26, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

Well, I've deleted 1 part of the sentence, it makes more sense now. But I don't know of this bug. --GameHazard 12:28, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

I just came across a similar/related bug -- I could not activate the Garlas Malatar exterior door. I ordered the knights to attack, fought the exterior Aurorans, but couldn't go in -- until I quit to the main menu and re-started. I think I probably did talk to the prophet right before his speech; the The Blessing of Talos quest update says "speak to him immediately" (not wait for him to speak). Since this glitch is caused by the player faithfully following instructions, it should be featured prominently -- first on the bugs list. Even though the bug is caused by the previous quest, the player won't notice until this quest so it should be on this page. Thundre 09:35, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Gates aren't opening[edit]

I Can not seem to get any of the gates opened, is there something besides pressing the button that i have to do?? — Unsigned comment by 76.195.207.183 (talk) on 23 December 2009

Not really, all you have to do is activate the switch on the altar in the middle of the first room; the push block is next to a Welkynd Stone and an Ayleid Cask. A few solutions are: try killing all the Aurorans before activating it, exiting and entering the ruin and fast-travelling. --SerCenKing Talk 18:07, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

No Summoned Creature[edit]

While I was battling Umaril in his spiritual form, I'd Encounter a bug where summoned creatures do not appear. Has this happened to anyone ells? — Unsigned comment by 70.45.159.200 (talk) on 24 January 2010

Cause of the Sitting Bug (Obvious, really)[edit]

Wouldn't it just be sitting on Umaril's Throne then casting Talos's Blessing, forcing you to stand in the heaven realm?--Arch-Mage MattTalk 01:48, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

You can't cast spells while sitting and because you have your controls disabled when you cast Blessing of Talos, you can't teleport while sitting. --Rigas Papadopoulos • TalkDeeds 09:57, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Grabbing Umaril's Sword While Falling[edit]

After some testing, I've determined that the reason you die when you hit the sword is that you take falling damage when you land on it. With the UOP's fix to the falling damage calculation, and an Acrobatics of 255, I was able to land on it after a fairly long fall without taking any damage. With my Acrobatics at normal levels and a fairly low-level character, I usually died unless I hit it really quickly. Robin Hoodtalk 06:01, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Also if you don't hit the sword but go after it you can end up going out of the "teleport zone" and dying that way. All together it's probably safest not go after it in most cases. Oh, and I changed the header since it's not Umbra you grab.--Ghurhak gro-Demril or TAOYes? 16:07, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
It starts with "Um", doesn't it? Close enough! ;) I was never able to get out of the teleport zone. It looks like the teleport is timed, so I'd be curious to know exactly what you're doing so I can look into it some more. Robin Hoodtalk 18:18, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Erm... Maybe I'm not actually getting out of the teleport area. It's been a while since I did this and I may be remembering wrong. I thought it took time but it could be instant.--Ghurhak gro-Demril or TAOYes? 18:26, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Pic without a watermark[edit]

I just recently got around to playing the plug-in and saw that the page had been marked with "need a better pic without a watermark", so I went ahead and added one of my own. I took a whole bunch, and still have them on my hard drive, not to mention a save file prior to the final showdown, so if this one isn't satisfactory, I can easily provide another. Hope this helps! -Eleima 18:08, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Good image - thanks! rpeh •TCE 18:12, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Heh, you're welcome. It was funny, I just kinda stood there, taking a beating so that I can take a few, and then just picked the one that looked the nicest. Not sure if I have clearance to remove the "cleanup" tag, though. Will a mod or a higher up decide and take care of that? - Eleima 18:15, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
I took care of it, but you can remove such tags yourself if you upload a new version. If you merely disagree with a tag like that you should explain why on the article talk page rather than simply removing it, but that wasn't an issue here. Assuming you're playing on the PC, you may find some of the tips mentioned here to be of use in the future. The tai command, when used properly, means you don't have to take a beating - you can freeze your enemy and then move around to get perfect shots. Not easy, but worth playing with. rpeh •TCE 18:45, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks a bunch for the info! I'd taken a quick peek in the "how to contribute" files, but hadn't found anything relevant. As for the beating, I'll keep it in mind for next time! (although I had sufficient health and mana to take it, this time around, might be very useful in the future) And I found the tag, I hadn't been looking hard enough, but you beat me to it! Again, thanks for all the info! -Eleima 19:06, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Dark Orb?[edit]

Most instances of the "Dark Orb" on this page have recently been changed to "Destroy Orb". This obviously isn't the thing's proper name, but that's what it's labelled as. Looking in the CS, I can see "Smite Item" and "Orb of Smitting" [sic] as possible names. My question is, where did the term Dark Orb come from in the first place? It's been on the page since its creation. Should we stop referring to the orb by name, or should we sacrifice accuracy in this case? I think calling it the Destroy Orb is a bit silly, as is Orb of Smiting, but I can't find a reference for Dark Orb. Thoughts? --Legoless 18:27, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

I have no idea where the name came from but I'm going to temporarily change it back to Dark Orb as the other pages in the wiki refer to it as 'Dark Orb'. mxk101Talk 18:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Defeating Umaril Before Quest[edit]

I think it should not be counted as bug, because it is WAD. Sometimes in some games you can do some things before doing related quest, that may like trap you in situation without escape because you don't have the item required or something like that. But it is my personal opinion.

Defeating Umaril: Wearing all Crusader Relics vs Other Armour[edit]

I initially confronted Umaril in both the physical and spiritual planes wearing all Crusader Relics, using the Crusader Sword as my weapon of choice. I defeated him, but it required time and considerable effort. My armour rating was 69. On a second attempt reloading earlier save, I wore my 85 rated armour and used the Crusader Sword as the only Holy relic. I dispatched him in both planes in a matter of a few minutes with considerable ease. I question whether wearing all the Crusader Relics actually provides any real advantage (actually a disadvantage in this case)despite the scripted impact on Umaril garnered with all relics worn. The difference in battle between the two scenarios was major. — Unsigned comment by 71.255.99.53 (talk) at 08:43 on September 14, 2011

It's all really a matter of opinion. The Crusader's Relics are powerful, but generally apply to a certain archetype of player. There is a large bonus to Restoration and Personality, and minor ones to Destruction, Resist Normal Weapons, and Health. Probably other things I'm too lazy to look into. But to many players these will not directly affect the battle. Now if you have other enchanted armor with more useful effects toward your playing style, they would probably be more helpful. As for the Holy Aura effect, a 60 point drain on his Strength, Agility, and Luck sounds pretty good. I can't really say for sure how well, as I have done little work with creatures, mostly with NPCs, who are created differently. It would be suggested that the Strength difference, combined with his lowered Blade, would be quite substantial in lowering his damage output. The Agility loss would make him more prone to falling in combat. I'm uncertain if Luck affects non player actors, but if it did, a 60 point loss would be like decreasing all of his skills. Looking in the CS it seems that the highest level of Umaril has 35 for each of these Attributes, which is fairly low... I don't think Luck decreases skills if under 50 but I'm not sure.
Personally, I don't usually wear the full Crusader gear, even to fight Umaril. I don't think he is a particularly powerful enemy, and I usually find something in random loot that is better. So it really depends on your choice. --DKong27 Tk Ctr Em 16:30, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Non-bug with entering early from main page[edit]

This is almost certainly wrong and I flagged it as verification required:

If you enter Garlas Malatar before doing the related quests first, you can get stuck in the room with Umaril. The forcefield will trap you there since you don't have "The Blessing Of Talos" to advance.

The way further in beyond the entry area is blocked by three Ayleid wrought-iron gates. The push block to open them will do nothing but give a dialog saying something is preventing it from opening unless quest ND10 (Umaril the Unfeathered) is at stage 10, ie exactly when it is supposed to open so the player and Knights can go in. Kivan 05:20, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I'm not even going to waste time trying to check that one - I know for a fact that the gates stop you advancing. rpeh •TCE 11:46, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

Azura's Star on Umaril[edit]

A rough way to solve sitting glitch without Unofficial Oblivion DLC Patches.[edit]

Sorry for my bad english.

Before you do so please backup your save file, or save as another file.

my guess is the sitting animation is fine until mission stage go to 90. Due to lack of time I didn't make a fully test.

step is simple:

1.when battle with Umaril, open console and type setstage ND10 100.

2.kill Umaril, now you won't fall from sky because game consider you're already complete the mission.

3.so you're stuck in sky now, open console and type coc NDPrioryoftheNineUndercroft.

4.you're back, although there's lots of sence disappeared. but you have knights and Priory, chapels in Anvil and Bravil are also restored, and most important, you can sit without glitch.

The Sword kills me[edit]
