Modifications Elsewhere[edit]

What should be done now to the rest of the wiki where all these problems are referenced? Should some standard phrase such as "(this issue fixed with Patch v1.1)" now be appended to any glitches that have been fixed? Can we assume that Bethesda's list of fixes is accurate, or should we verify that the fixes are working and then post info accordingly? --Nephele 14:59, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

Knights of the Nine: Oblivion Downloadable Content Collection[edit]

I recently bought the collection of the downloadable plug-ins from my local electronic gaming store but was disappointed to find that the version of the patch (Version 1.1.511) included in the pack, was for the US version of the game and not my country's version, ie the patch was Oblivion_v1.1FinalEnglish.exe designed for the US instead of Oblivion_v1.1UKEnglish.exe, which is for the UK, English-speaking Europe and Australia (my location).
Maybe we could include a warning or some information on the patch page to assist anyone else with a similar problem.

New patch?[edit]

I've heard that there is a new patch for the 360, is there one for pc as well? I go and check it out, I guess this page needs some updating..--Viccce 11:38, 23 March 2007 (EDT)

The page is current with the latest patches available. A new patch for both PC and 360 is due out Monday, 30 April 2007, but there's probably not a need to update the page until it's actually released. 65.14.2.104 12:26, 26 April 2007 (EDT)

Regarding Duping with Arrows[edit]

I just installed the patch and found that I can no longer dupe items using arrows. I don't see this listed in the "bug fix" area of the patch description, but I think it should be mentioned in the article. I would have duped a bunch of soul gems before I installed the patch, had I known (=

uhm.. you're wrong. it is noted at version 1.1.511. So it is really redundant to state it at patch 1.2 — Unsigned comment by 82.75.238.188 (talk)

uhm.. you're wrong. There are two patches. The newly released one is version 1.2; the old one is version 1.1.511. Try reading the article and checking out the Bethesda links. --Nephele 22:25, 26 March 2007 (EDT)
yes, but doesn't patch 1.2 include everything that was in previous patches, it wouln't make sense if they wouldn't — Unsigned comment by 82.75.238.188 (talk)

ok, but is there any other loop hole through this patch? Is there a method of duplication that got through and is still usable?

Uh, I have those patches installed and I can still dupe with arrows... I'm playing the PC version. --Briareus 21:25, 11 April 2007 (EDT)

Utter Patch Disappointment[edit]

This might be better placed in Oblivion:Gripes but since it solely pertains to the patch I'll put it here for the time being. I'm looking for anyone that can either tell me I'm missing something (as in this is a 1.2 beta patch) or share my raging disappointment with patch 1.2. I honestly wouldn't even know where to begin.

First and foremost, some of the most utterly common, blatantly ridiculous bugs aren't even addressed here, in fact hardly anything is, a few rare quest bruises and a pepper-effect for distant detail that isn't even as good as the existing user-made plug-ins (fact). I was going to name off an entire list but there's already to many numerous ones you can refer to and compare to see if a bug was fixed, our own Glitches page has a nice sized one and at least two archived different lists in addition. What happened here Bethesda?

Mostly I'm upset because a particular glitch was not fixed and isn't even really being addressed at all by Bethesda, the frozen animations glitch. I caught this bug at 290 hours of gameplay, it makes all animations stutter or freeze entirely, this includes fire, smoke, sediment, splashing, all spell casting, oblivion gates, Frostcrag Spire's rotating tower, air particles that float around rooms, you name it. There is no permanent fix and it is widely, widely known and encountered, usually above 200 hours. Currently I'm pushing 500 hours with my character, so I've lived with this experience shattering flaw for about 200 hours of play, I'm tired of it and I even stopped playing for a few months because of it, however temptation is sweet and I was lured back in with Knights of the Nine and put on my best "ignore" face.

Oblivion is a massive achievement on all levels, but as time goes on and quests/items accumulate, all sorts of game breaking flaws start happening. Unfortunately, it's a game that's supposed to be played for an unspeakable amount of time, that's it's main draw and the massive core of the immersion aspect. I waited a long time for a second patch to fix this and a few other bugs I've been stuck with (that also weren't fixed) and this is the garbage we get. I'm not going to make this any longer than needs be but for Gods sake, the Unofficial Patch had almost 800, EIGHT HUNDRED, various bug fixes last I checked. Bethesda even had a roadmap of glitches to follow. Who knows what it's up to at this point, or God forbid, what the Shivering Isles Unofficial patch will contain. Anyways, I just really needed to vent and get others opinions on this diabolical swindle of a cat turd patch. I am disgusted and am looking forward so much less to the Isles knowing quite possibly everything there will be stuttering like Stanley and other preposterously stupid things will be happening causing me to reload rather than role play my character. --AlbinoMudcrab 03:43, 27 March 2007 (EDT)

*shrugs* At least we get patches... quite a few of the games I own don't even get patched, and if they do, it's to "fix" online cheating or in the form of map packs and whatnot. Either way, patches aren't a big deal for me, and due to my Restart-itis, I doubt I'd ever get a character past 255 hours. --Talon Lardner 00:32, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
I didn't know about this bug, maybe you should put it into the Glitches page? Grandmaster z0b 01:29, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
I hear you on that one, I'm in the same boat with many games that just seem to get forgotten about after they're released, or yes, just fix some online balancing issues or exploit. Actually my previous post was a little demeaning. The distant texture fix is actually really great for people that aren't into community mods or tweaking their game and I don't know if the patches get applied to the 360 but if so, that's the majority of players and you would have to be grateful if that was the case and were playing on a 360.
I will admit that the stuttering is better, some things seem to not stutter anymore but the majority, 70-80%, still suffers from it to some degree or another. I still encounter stopped animations frequently but on the usual "choppy" animations they are noticeably quicker or don't occur to such a massive degree as before patching. My overall game runs noticeably better but load times seem to have increased very slightly (not enough to even be bothered by it though for the improvement).
So, I didn't want to sound as disgusted as I did before, but I'm still slightly disappointed, especially given the unofficial patch list. I'm about to start Shivering Isles here shortly after this post so we'll see how that goes, I feel a little bit energetic/nervous for some reason. Also, considering the game has given me as many hours of game play that it is has for $50 bucks, I really have very little to complain about at all. --AlbinoMudcrab 01:53, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
So is the glitch overall game stuttering or a particular frozen animations glitch? Grandmaster z0b 02:00, 29 March 2007 (EDT)
This is a particular glitch/bug that Bethesda has known about forever, apparently it happens with the save file. I now understand that this also happens on the 360 which makes the lack-of acknowledgment even stranger, apparently it gets bad enough to where some save games go entirely corrupt, although as I said I played almost 200 hours with it and this never happened to me personally. I don't know how else to explain it, it's not game stuttering, only the animations stutter. You open a door and it goes frame by frame slower then faster, depending on how you move the cam/view around, going into third-person seems to make it move faster. Same with any animation, you cast a fireball and you can literally run circles around it as it's moving. The list goes on. I think it was submitted to the Glitches page a long time ago, it's been prominently on the official elderscrolls forum in at least five separate discussions. The choices are temporary fix, or hex editing the save file, which is the same thing except manual. Check it out.

Oblivion v1.2.0416 patch for UK/Australia?[edit]

Um, anyone know where it is? I didn't install the 1.2 update because I've been waiting for it.

Will the patch work on all accounts and only needs to be downloaded once?[edit]

One of my accounts on my Xbox 360 can't seem to connect to Xbox Live (The one with all of my oblivion files) would you only need to download it once and for the patch to work on all accounts? — Unsigned comment by 65.93.223.239 (talk)

I believe it only needs to be downloaded once and will automatically be available to all accounts. If you're in doubt, check under options/video and see what version is listed for your main oblivion account after you've downloaded the patch. --NepheleTalk 22:53, 1 May 2007 (EDT)

Dumb Question, but need help![edit]

I just got the final version patch off the main site but I don't know how to install it. Just for reference I do not have any of the older patches as I was waiting for the final one to come out. It would be much appreciated if someone could help me. -May 02, 2007

Just double click the exe and it should install itself with no problems. Post bakc if you need more advice, and good luck! -Lordsword 8 12:44, 2 May 2007 (EDT)
Whenever I try to run the patch, it sits on 0% and locks up. Has this happened to anyone else?
Check that you have the correct patch for your area. Go to www.elderscrolls.com and then downloads and check if you have the correct one.--130.95.128.51 00:54, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
I'm pretty sure I downloaded the right one. English(American). Wouldn't it tell me if I had the wrong version? Anyway, I noticed when it locks up, it creates a very big file at some point... really annoying...68.239.143.110 02:23, 11 May 2007 (EDT)
This is going to sound basic, but how long have you waited when it "locked-up"? If you have given it a substantial time then disregard this post. I don't know what your PC specs are but it does take a RAW minute to begin progressing in the percentage bar. Basically, if you haven't, just sit there, give it at least 30 minutes to "show" progress. It takes a good time to start but once it does, the patch will just run through to 100% pretty quick. --AlbinoMudcrab 02:40, 11 May 2007 (EDT)

I just got KOTN, however, I had installed the 1.2.o416 before I put on KOTN. Would the V 1.1 patch included in need to be installed? And if so would it overwrite the 1.2.0416 patch? Please help. — Unsigned comment by Stjimmycloud9 (talkcontribs)

No, you do not need to install any more patches. The 1.2.0416 patch includes all of the updates in the 1.1 patch. --NepheleTalk 11:42, 30 June 2007 (EDT)
Actually, 1.2.0416 doesn't contain launcher executable as one in 1.1.511, which means you will not get video presets in launcher setup. Since it is easier to simply click the "very high" settings button than to move each and every slide to the max in the game options, it is recomended to first update the game to 1.1.511 (because it will update the launcher), and then to 1.2.0416. In few words: jumping from 1.0 to 1.2.0415 doesn't update the launcher.

Patch Confusion[edit]

I'm very confused... i bought boblivion a while ago... i thought it was without any patches... but it turned out to be the 1.1.511 edition... i didn't notice it at that point, but later when i bought the knights of the nine edition... it wouldn't update properly, first i thought it was because i had Vista, but then i noticed the little writing in the lower left corner of the screen where it stood: 1.1.511... i had no idea what it meant so i checked it up and found out it was a patch... now i'm trying to find out if i can install the knights of the nine without having to update it from the cd.

can i do it

GOTYV[edit]

dose the game of the year version on xbox360 have any of the patches?--Marleysexton 15:54, 15 January 2008 (EST)

It should be fully patched to version 1.2.0416 (aka 1.2.1). Since I haven't purchased it myself I can't confirm, but it must be at least 1.2.0214 (aka 1.2) just to run Shivering Isles, and there is absolutely no reason why Bethesda would want to distribute a version of the game with the Reference Bug after they had fixed the problem. If you have GOTY yourself, you can easily check the version by following the instructions in the article. --NepheleTalk 16:17, 15 January 2008 (EST)
GOTY for the PC shows a version number of 1.1.425, despite the fact that the package includes SI, so clearly Bethesda didn't think that 1.2.1 was required to install SI. 98.211.124.111 16:31, 20 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I know this is old. To be clear...does GOTYV not need to be patched? --Zefiewings 22:51, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

patch 1.2.0214[edit]

I have the 1.2.0416 patch, but I think it's messed up my HGEC Meshes and Textures, does this mean I can't go back? 71.188.150.106 15:50, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

mages guild glitch[edit]

really not sure where to post this, but here goes: in the mages guild in Leyawiin, go into the south room on the ground floor. when you jump / walk on the window ledge, it makes the noise it would if you were standing in water. but when you hit the ledge or place items on it, you will see that its clearly stone. this should be added to a list of glitches, but even after an exhaustive search i cannot find it.

ps. sorry for the disgraceful grammar and spelling. — Unsigned comment by 172.143.39.238 (talk)

Vanilla Patch Problem[edit]

Not sure if this has been discussed before but i've got a problem with the latest patch. I have vanilla oblivion for the pc and have clocked nearly 400hrs. I didn't have any issues with the form id bug or anything else really but decided to update to 1.2.0416 just in case. I downloaded the correct patch and tried to install it but got the "old file not found" error. This confused me a bit as i thought this was only an issue if you have installed SI or a previous patch. (please forgive me but i forget which version i was running but i have had the game for about 12mths).

The next night i thought i'd play for a bit before trying the reinstall fix. When i loaded the last save i noticed the version had indeed changed to 1.2.0416 on the menu screen. After the game loaded to my horror the ground textures had lost most of their colour (with grass turned off the ground is mostly purple). Interestingly the entire oblivion map seems to be superimposed on the ground ! Since then i have tried to reinstall but to no avail. The patch still won't run and the ground is still purple.

Some points to possibly consider are: i made some minor changes to the .ini file, namely enabe 3.0 shaders and some other minor tweaks but i've backed up the original so it shouldn't be an issue hopefully. I've also backed up the some 200 save files i have so they should be safe. Has anyone heard of this happening before? — Unsigned comment by Hellfire (talkcontribs)

You've probably installed the wrong localisation of the patch, such as trying to install the US patch on the UK version, or vice versa. Did you download the 1.2.0416English patch, or the 1.2.0416UK patch? The first of these is for the US version only. --Gaebrial 07:49, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
OK then, pretty sure i downloaded the English version from the official site, didn't realise there was a localisation issue there as i would assume i have the UK version being in Australia. Thanks for that i shall try downloading again..121.210.69.103 08:10, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
Thank you Gaebrial ! My ground is green again and all is well in Cyrodiil..Funny how the American version is called English when the "Real" English version is UK..(no offense dear US readers, we really like you down here, go the 49nrs!)
I had the same issue. I've just remembered that I purchased my copy from the US back in '06. I live in Ireland so when I got the patch I decided that the UK one was the most likely one. Obviously not. I've never had a US version of a game before.

Mystery at Harlun's Watch bug[edit]

Hi, I have just downloaded the latest patch for the xbox 360 to fix a problem with 'Mystery at Harlun's Watch' quest in which the bodies do not appear in swampy cave, but now I have the latest patch they still do not appear, does anyone know why this is or what I have to do to fix it? The bug was supposedly fixed in patch 1.1.511 and as I have the latest it should be included.

I noticed that after I went to the cave a second time, then applied the patch, then loaded a game where I was already in the cave, the patch did not work. Travb 21:28, 13 October 2008 (EDT)

battlehorn castle mod info[edit]

Hey, I wondered if anyone could tell me, when battlehorn castle is downloaded for the Xbox, is the scroll duplication glitch stopped and will i lose any duplicated items? from what i've heard, that happens. can anyone confirm it please, if possible before 6th august. (Alpha-125 03:49, 29 July 2008 (EDT))

No. It still works just fine. –RpehTCE 03:57, 29 July 2008 (EDT)
ok thanks for that Rpeh. (Alpha-125)

Installation order[edit]

This may seem like an rather idiotic issue, but I have not been able to find a clear, simple and definite answer as to the exact order of installation for the various patches and expansions/plugins. So far, I've got vanilla oblivion, then installed the 1.2.0416 non-SI patch and then installed SI sometime after that. Supposing I want to install KOTN, what is the optimal order, considering there is also an SI 1.2.0416 patch ? Since I'm asking, I assume other people might also have the same kind of question. Would it not be useful to have this information on the main page ?--Crapulax 20:49, 29 July 2008 (EDT)

Xbox 360: Confirm that the FormID patch has been installed[edit]

The instruction state:

"To confirm that the FormID patch has been installed, Xbox 360 users should check the "Video" screen under "Options". The bottom left corner of the Video screen will read "Version 1.2.1" if this FormID patch has been installed; without this patch it will read "Version 1.2" (if other previous patches have not been installed, the version may be "Version 1.1" or be missing completely)."

Okay, I assume the "Options" screen is the screen that comes up when you press start? The screen that says:

--Paused--
return
save
load
options
quit

I clicked options, with the green "A" and then got this screen:

--Paused--
return
gameplay
video
audio
controls
downloads

When I click "video" all that is on this page is:

  • a brightness slider, with
  • a default "Y" and
  • return "B".

I am currently not online.

Something is wrong with these instructions, or I am doing something wrong. Travb 21:37, 13 October 2008 (EDT)

I figured it out, after downloading the patch, for some reason the patch was then erased, requiring me to log in and download the patch for a second time. There was no version on my video screen before downloading the patch a second time. Travb 22:24, 13 October 2008 (EDT)

New patch[edit]

It seems there's a new patch for Oblivion for the 360. I haven't played it in a few months, so I know it's from this year. I started Oblivion up, and it went to patch, but I cancelled and installed Oblivion right to the hard drive (thanks NXE! :D) and then patched it again. However, I don't know what the patch fixed. Anyone know? DaedryonTCE 22:16, 30 November 2008 (EST)

There is no new patch. It's nothing more than your Xbox re-downloading the same old patch, probably because you hadn't played the game in a while and therefore your Xbox had cleaned up files that it thought were no longer needed. If you want to confirm, you can just check your version number, as detailed in the article, which should still read "Version 1.2.1" --NepheleTalk 00:08, 1 December 2008 (EST)
Ohhh....hm. Weird. I'm guessing it was maybe due to the New XBOX Experience. DaedryonTCE 00:54, 1 December 2008 (EST)

GOTY PC & Official Patches[edit]

I'm currently trying to reinstall Oblivion, but have run into a bug I've encountered before. I have the GOTY PC edition, and after installing Oblivion/KOTN/SI and a couple of the DLC mods, along with the unofficial patches, Oblivion CTD's, but only if I've attempted to use the official patches on top of this. Both patches fail to complete, saying they can't find the correct files or some similar error.

Are the GOTY files fully patched for Oblivion and SI? If so, why should my abortive attempts at patching the game mess it up?  :-P

I'm off to uninstall everything and start from scratch... piphil 17:51, 27 December 2008 (EST)

Ok, ignore above, CTD was caused by old saved games being present in the My Games/Oblivion folder from a previous install. piphil 07:53, 28 December 2008 (EST)

i got the GOTY edition for PS3 which i believe comes with the 1.2 patch? if so, are there any new patches out or being developed with the speculation and rumours of TESV now?--Repeater 13:39, 16 April 2009 (EDT)

Try typing goty into the search box here on the wiki and pressing "enter"... it'll send you here, which explains that "The GOTY version of the game is the equivalent of the original game patched to version 1.2.1, with the addition of the Knights of the Nine plug-in and the Shivering Isles expansion." And this article explains that 1.2.1 is the latest patch. --GuildKnightTalk2me 19:01, 15 April 2009 (EDT)

XBox 360 Oblivion bundled w/ Bioshock NOT patching, PLEASE HELP![edit]

I purchased the bundled XBox 360 versions of Bioshock and Oblivion. I started to play oblivion and encountered several errors with quests that can now not be completed and I cannot move on in guild rank. These quests are all fixed via the XBox automatic patch. However when I start the game, no patch updates ever appear. This isn't the Game of the Year edition, so the patch isn't automatically included, as far as I can tell (no version number appears on the Video screen like it should). I have no clue what to do, and I'm finding NO resources online. Please...HELP ME FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO! I have tried installing the game to the Hard Drive, connecting and reconnecting to XBL, etc. I Will not pay 2400 marketplace points to download shivering isles (I mean I paid $15 for this game, why would I pay $30 for the expansion just to play the game I bought????) which I think has the patch. I've tried holding A while the game loads. Is there a known error with this new release of the game? 69.248.187.168 12:22, 17 July 2009 (UTC) Aaron

Okkkk...what I had to do to update the dumb game was go to EB Games and pick up the DVD of Shivering Isles, which patched the game and allowed me to continue with the quests that were bugged without having to start over...AGAIN. Since there was a "Buy 2 get 1 used" deal for used games, I essentially got the updates for free. Evidently there MAY be a patching problem with the release of Oblivion in the Bioshock bundle. 65.222.208.98 17:38, 19 July 2009 (UTC) Aaron

I am stuck in Gweden Farm on Xbox 360.[edit]

I was doing the quest: The Sirens Deception. And after i klled the three thieves in the farmhouse i tried to leave but the door was locked, i heard there was a patch to solve my problem but i don't know if there is an Xbox 360 version of the v1.1 patch. If anyone knows where it is can they please send me the link to dowload it. Thankyou. — Unsigned comment by 82.32.25.31 (talk) on August 27, 2009 at 20:01

If it is a patch issue, all you need to do to download it is connect to Xbox Live via your console and start the game. It should tell you that a patch is available for the game and will then tell you how to download it. -Dlarsh(Talk,Contribs) 02:35, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Unable to Install[edit]

I'm trying to install the Shivering Isles patch; I just installed SI and have installed NO beta versions or anything. I doublechecked to make sure I was downloading the English version (Do I need U.S. seeing as I live there? I didn't see one...) and that it was Shivering Isles patch, but it continues to tell me, "Old File not found". Does anyone know how to fix this problem? -EDIT: Also, I don't think it's direct2drive; mine was purchased from a store. — Unsigned comment by 75.222.50.53 (talk) on 31 March 2010

Is it already patched? Load Oblivion and look at the bottom left of the main menu screen. If it says 1.2.0416 then you're already patched. rpeh •TCE 17:18, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Quoting from the question: "I just installed SI". If you've installed SI you've also automatically installed the patch - which is why it won't let you install it again. --SerCenKing Talk 17:24, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Ah; that's it, the patch was already installed. xD Overlooked that. Thanks! 75.222.92.169 20:36, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

"Old file not found."[edit]

I'm using Oblivion w/o any patches (v 1.08 or suppose), it doesn't have the expansion either.

I've installed to my external hard drive, when I run the patch it comes up with first:

"Missing or invalid Registry/INI entry"

then:

"Old file not found."

I have bought the game myself, no cracked or illegal versions..

What's going wrong?

EDIT: nevermind, got it to work, somehow my registry was deleted... I think because I only moved the files to harddrive, I didn't install it there.

How to know the version of the main game[edit]

A mod required a certain version of Oblivion to be installed so I needed to know it but searching "oblivion+version+get OR fetch OR retrieve" got me nothing... I then tried "oblivion what version do I have ?" which led me to the answer: right click Oblivion.exe and look at the file version. --DynV 22:29, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Saved games lost during patch?[edit]

I currently have the main game directly from the DVD, version 0.1.0.228, which crash like crazy so I'd like to upgrade to have it crash less but... will I loose by saved games (corruption, deletion, overwriting, ...) doing so having to start again? --DynV 22:36, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

No, you won't lose any saved games when you install the patch. --NepheleTalk 16:46, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

i have lost all my lesser powers in shivering isle, but i'm still the god and i have all the rewards from completing the quests. however the quests do not show up in my completed quest file? what should i do? haskill doesn't say a word and i can not talk to him. need help!

Probably a stupid question but anyway. I have been playing Oblivion GOTY edition for about 45 hours now and have just got my hands on the shivering isles and knights of the nine expansion cd for xbox. I am unsure weather to install the expansion in case it overwrites my GOTY character. Like I said i dont knoiw much about the matter and am hoping you can help me ASAP!

cheers

Archive Invalidation[edit]

(moved from the article) If reinstalling Oblivion after having used archive invalidation on the UK version, you have to go back to the defaults to fix this problem. If OBMM was deleted with Oblivion then you can go back to defaults by deleting the archive invalidation file in the registry.

This isn't anything to do with the patch, and it's so unclear that I have no idea where, if anywhere, it should go. rpeh •TCE 11:43, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

1.2. Problem[edit]

A few months ago I had this discussion. I found what caused the problem. It's the 1.2 patch. Here how I figured it out:

I gave the patch to my best friend (see here) and the patch stopped at 13% and said the update was not done because the Old File was not found but a file with the same name was found. The patch was still installed though. We opened the game and the version was updated. He loaded his save and here you go, purple ground.

Patch availability[edit]

Is it only me, or are all the official patch links outdated?
I remember that by the end of the last year I could download the patches from the support area on bethsoft.com. That's, where elderscrolls.com links to for patches. But Bethsoft seems to have restructured, there's now only an FAQ area with answers, that redirect to elderscrolls.com for patch downloads. WTF? -- CompleCCity (talk) 08:54, 4 June 2014 (GMT)
