Light while sneaking[edit]

If you have a high enough sneak with no chameleon, then you drink a 110 (or so) foot Light potion, what effects would this have on your sneak ability and attacking? From the description provided on the main page, it sounds to be like you would light up an entire room and you would no longer be the focus of the light source. Is this correct? --TobyD 06:43, 14 November 2007 (EST)

This is what the note says: Be careful casting Light when you are sneaking or under the effects of chameleon; as you would imagine, it spoils your chances of hiding. So it makes you more easily detectable while sneaking. --Mankar CamoranTCE 08:36, 14 November 2007 (EST)
Thanks Mankar, I was just curious if anyone had experimented with this more in-depth or not. Is the light basically an equivalent to a torch (in terms of detection) and if there was a way you can use Light the same way you can use Night-Eye. --TobyD 11:29, 14 November 2007 (EST)
No problem. That's why we are here! --Mankar CamoranTCE 11:43, 14 November 2007 (EST)

Casting Targeted Light Spells[edit]

It says that "Casting targeted light spells only works when the spell strikes an NPC or monster. It doesn't work if cast at a point on the floor or wall." I'm pretty sure that this isn't true. I cast a custom target spell of light at the wall in froscrag spire a couple of times with a wide AOE and it lit up the place for the alloted duration. --Piercethetruth 20:54, 6 December 2007 (EST)

Then I'm guessing that there was a NPC/creature standing near the wall when you cast the spell (for example, one of the Atronach familiars? Or another follower?). If you cast an area of effect spell at a wall, it will affect any animate objects (other than yourself) that are standing within the spell's area of effect. It still doesn't mean that the spell is having an effect on the wall; the target just becomes the creature(s) within the spell's range. One way to see the difference pretty clearly is to change your light spell to have a small magnitude (say, 10), in which case there will be circles of light centered on the spell's targets. The walls will never be lit up. Another way to tell the difference is to cast the spell on a wall when there aren't any creatures within the spell's area of effect. The room will stay completely dark. --NepheleTalk 23:08, 12 December 2007 (EST)
oh yeahhhhhhhh that makes sense..it hit me lol.--Piercethetruth 08:42, 15 December 2007 (EST)

Darkness[edit]

What about the Darkness effect?99.237.148.26 11:11, 5 April 2008 (EDT)

Try doing a search. It would direct you here. –RpehTCE 11:17, 5 April 2008 (EDT)

Stackable Light?[edit]

I was wondering if light "stacks" with itself, in the same manner that Detect Life stacks (ie. Detect life 180 + Detect Life 180 = 360 ft of Detect Life). — Unsigned comment by Limduhl (talkcontribs) at 16:06 on 9 April 2009

By what I've seen, it doesn't stack, unfortunately. — Unsigned comment by 84.50.202.62 (talk) at 22:35 on 22 June 2009
The article seems to suggest it does. "Light effects can be stacked. Therefore, if you had a ring with 20ft of light and another one with 30ft, you would end up with a light magnitude of 50ft." — Unsigned comment by 125.237.20.168 (talk) at 03:41 on 1 January 2011
In terms of radius yes, but not in terms of the amount of light that hits the player. The "light level" that hits any object cannot be greater than 100. saebel --76.91.247.145 16:57, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
The article means what it says - that the radius stacks. You're basically right about the amount of light, although don't forget that different colours of light will change the illumination too. For instance, a Light spell gives greenish light and a torch gives yellowish. The result will be the addition of the two. rpeh •TCE 17:09, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Constantly appear to have light spell on, with none of the effects glitch[edit]

I was doing the quest in the shivering isles where you collect the eye for Sheogorath's staff earlier, and noticed this glitch. When I paused the game to look at my inventory, I noticed that my character looked like he had the light spell on, I thought it was neat because I had never noticed that he looked brighter with it on. Then, later I took the robe with 10ft light enchantment on it that is used in the quest to not get attacked by the followers, my character was still bright. Even with new armor, casting a light spell and letting it wear off, fast traveling, reloading the game, and taking off all armor and putting it back on, the effect is still there. It's a little bit annoying, but not affecting my sneak as the appearance of my character on the inventory screen is the only thing affected, that I have noticed, so far. Any other ideas on how to get rid of this annoying little glitch? I am playing the Xbox 360 version, so no console commands. B10Reaper 23:41, 2 May 2009 (EDT)

This happened to me as well, the most annoying thing was that in inventory view you couldn't turn the character around as the light effect seemed to be draining system resources. However, I turned the 360 off and on again and that fixed it. --Chiliflamingo 23:08, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Bugs[edit]

(moved entire section from article)
  • Be careful not to cast Light while sleeping, waiting, or in 'cutscene' mode (when your character is frozen to watch a predetermined quest event). If the Light spell expires during any of these sequences, the Light effect may remain active even after it was supposed to expire. The Light effect won't light up a room, but it is visible if you look at your character in the inventory view; it will also ruin any Chameleon spells. To fix this, save the game and then reload; simply reloading the previously glitchy game will make the effect disappear.
  • On Xbox360, similar to the bug above, you should not use light at all because loading does not fix it. If you are wearing a head piece the bug might just effect that head piece, basicly ruining it, but you can take it off and you will not glow. Without a head piece nothing fixes it, you just keep glowing when you look at your character in the items menu. This may not occur when light on target is cast.
I moved this whole section because it all describes the same bug that seems to be a rare glitch rather than a common occurrence. I tried several times with various characters to get this effect and couldn't. Can anybody reliably replicate this problem? –rpehTCE 07:42, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I read somewhere you can clear your xboxs memory cache by booting it up while holding A,so i tried it and it cleared up my constant light problem, dont know if itll work for anyone else but hope it does. — Unsigned comment by 74.211.71.123 (talk) at 05:13 on 15 August 2009
Dispel always did this to me in the inventory view. So after some testing just now it seems to occur when light is cast in third person and cancelled with dispel in first person. So I load a couple other saves to try and test the whole sleep/rest aspect and ALL of my saves have the glitch -different characters and everything. Quitting all the way out and re-loading fixed the problem. Turns out sleeping did it too. Third person seems to be the cause? Never seen the helmet thing. This IS a Bug I never use light and am restricted to torches because of this bug, Light always makes my characters look weird--VergilSparda 16:09, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Light on Target[edit]

Do enemies become aware of you when they are hit by a light spell? Morrowind permitted this as a substitute Detect Life effect, convenient for sneaking.JabberwockySR (talk) 18:57, 12 July 2014 (GMT)

I haven't played in a long time, but yes I do believe they will ~ Dwarfmp (talk) 20:26, 12 July 2014 (GMT)

Stuck in room[edit]

I've noticed that after I cast the Light spell in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary, it remains stuck in there in the spot where I cast it despite the fact that I cast it on myself. Is there any wall at all to fix this? — Unsigned comment by 98.28.235.254 (talk) at 07:47 on 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Your game is experiencing the effects of the Abomb glitch. Follow the instructions there, although if you are on console, your save is now done. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 07:47, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
