Detection[edit]

I was able to complete this quest killing 3 of the mercs, and I still got the bonus. Ratwar 00:45, 3 April 2006

I suspect you did so while sneaking and they never detected you. I, on the other hand, somehow managed to sell the poison, so I was forced to kill Roderick the old fashioned way. — Unsigned comment by Montek (talkcontribs) at 10:04 on 5 August 2006
I was able to complete the quest and get the bonus while killing all 4 guards. I killed the 4th guard while she stood watch over Roderick. A successful sneak attack is all you need. Its not difficult to complete the quest with no kills, especially if you have Nocturnal's Cowl. — Unsigned comment by Klash72 (talkcontribs) at 21:18 on 6 August 2006

Cabinet Issues[edit]

when i went to the medicine cabinet i took the medicine. but i couldn't replace it with the poison. what buttons do i press to put the poison in the cabinet. or is the game messed...

somebody please help. i can't get the achievment if i dont finish this — Unsigned comment by 65.93.140.187 (talk) at 08:02 on 2 April 2007

Same thing happened to me... — Unsigned comment by 68.36.109.137 (talk) at 18:56 on 28 April 2007
If pressing the left trigger and selecting it from your inventry desn't do it, it must have glitched. — Unsigned comment by 91.107.103.53 (talk) at 06:56 on 29 February 2008

Roderic[edit]

Can he actually be woken up on this mission, or is he in a permenantly comatose state? — Unsigned comment by Merco (talkcontribs) at 11:19 on 25 August 2007

He can't be woken up. Trying to talk to him brings up a message about how ill he looks, and one hit with a weapon kills him (completing the quest but losing the bonus). --RpehTalk 04:48, 26 August 2007 (EDT)
But does he ever die? If I return a couple of days later, will he still be in the same condition? Or will he simply disappear because he's a quest-object? And what happens with the poison? Do they ever use it, since it's, as mentioned, not quite a Potion? SwedishBerzerker at youtube.com 02:59, 18 May 2009 (EDT)
Yes. He is killed at stage 10 of Permanent Retirement - two quests later. He will then disappear in the usual 72 hours. –RpehTCE 03:17, 18 May 2009 (EDT)
As for the poison, what happens to it depends on whether or not you're a PC user and have the Unofficial Oblivion Patch installed. If you don't, the potion and/or poison will stay in the cabinet. If you do, they will both be removed from the cabinet once the quest is done, though only whichever one(s) you leave in the cupboard - if they're anywhere else (like your inventory), those ones won't be removed. Oh and they're not "used" in the typical sense, just removed/deleted from the cupboard. --Robin Hood (TalkE-mailContribs) 17:40, 18 May 2009 (EDT)

I don't suppose you can witness the man's demise at all? I hung around for awhile after replacing the poisons and one of the guards went over and stood next to the man, but it didn't seem like they were going to administer the "medicine." Does that ever happen? — Unsigned comment by 24.71.238.204 (talk) at 02:04 on 12 September 2007

I noticed the poison is not located in your Potions tab, but rather in the "Everything" tab. It threw me off for a while, I thought I had sold it or something. — Unsigned comment by 68.13.75.181 (talk) at 16:26 on 23 March 2008

Returning[edit]

If you return after finishing the quest correctly, will the guards still bet there? If yes, will they attack you on sight?Amantius Allectus 10:54, 1 August 2008 (EDT)

Yes and yes. The guards are all still there although Roderick's body disappears, and they attack you on sight. –RpehTCE 06:49, 2 August 2008 (EDT)

(moved from article)[edit]

  • PLEASE KNOW THIS* To actually replace the poision you have to open the cabinet, take the medicine, then press L1, or whatever you press to sell something to a shopkeep, and then press ok for the poision. I don't know if I worded that right, but I got confused. — Unsigned comment by 69.253.151.232 (talk)

Killing Guards First[edit]

If you kill the guards before picking up the quest, will they still be gone when you come back to place the poison? Also, will you suddenly get the "detected" entry after picking it up, or will it still count as remaining undetected? Felindre 13:18, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

It's a nice idea but you can't do it. All the quest-centric items - guards, Roderick himself, and the medicine cabinet - only become present in the fort when the quest is started. –RpehTCE 13:37, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

The tag....[edit]

I just reworked the detailed walkthrough and cleaned up the notes, but I invite a more experienced member of this site to critique my work (and revert it if necessary). I think it's much better than it was, but I've been wrong before. Also, concerning the notes, about three or four of them were unnecessary after extending the walkthrough, but I was very tempted to throw one of my own in there....

  • Strangely enough, Roderick is sleeping in the same position that vampires sleep in. (This can be observed if you've ever found Vicente Valtieri sleeping during a previous quest.) If you attempt to talk to him, you will be informed that in his condition, his "skin is pale". Two odd signs....

I resisted the temptation though.... Justeazy 04:32, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

I've tweaked your changes but in general you did a good job! I'm not too sure about that note though... It seems speculation at the best, since it isn't referred to anywhere else. --SerCenKing Talk 17:08, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I know, it was a joke, that's why I didn't put it in. Thanks for the overlook and removing the flag. Justeazy 01:08, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
A lot of what you tweaked was there before I changed it, so I'm happy about that! (That's not to say you didn't change a lot of mine too.) Concerning the tag you put, this is easily tested. The first part (immediate detection) you can enter the main door a few times holding a torch (or light effect) and if you are already detected as soon as the cell loads, you will not lose the bonus immediately. To test the second part (distance detection) is easy when using the second entrance. Have a torch out (waterwalking helps it not to be extinguished in the flooded tunnel) and Laenafil will see you from a distance down the corridor (the sneak eye turns bright and she runs right toward you), but you will not get the detected message until she gets close to you. I put it up there, so I can't verify it, but putting how so someone else who reads this can. Justeazy 01:26, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

<- I can. Sorry, but moving from the article since it's technically incorrect. Explanation follows...

Original Text:

  • You can kill the guards and still get the bonus. The most obvious way would be use sneak attacks and the associated bonuses to get one-hit kills. Note that you must kill them instantly to secure your bonus (e.g. if a damage over time enchantment or poison does the final blow, instead, you will lose the bonus). However, if you enter the cell and are automatically detected (as is possible with Gerard Melie) or are detected at a sufficient distance, and quickly kill the guard who detects you, you will not lose your bonus. {{VN|Second point needs checking}}

The detection runs as normal - there are no custom scripts for it on the NPCs. It's the QUEST script that's special, and THAT is what "fails" the mission if the player is detected at the time the quest script ticks. Like all non-adjusted quest scripts though, and it is unadjusted, it runs at a 5-second interval, so you have anything from 0.0r1 seconds to 4.9r seconds to get away with a mistake. Since you have no way to tell what that leeway is at any point in time and it may be less time than any action you can perform takes, your assessment of "quickly kill" is not quantifiable, not controllable, and most importantly not necessarily true. - Ali — Unsigned comment by 24.180.46.112 (talk) at 20:19 on 17 April 2010

Okay, I didn't know that. I ran through the fort like five times on the mission and it always seems to work that way. However, I don't have access to the CS or anything. Thank you for checking the credibility and removing the now-shown-inaccurate information. — Unsigned comment by Justeazy (talkcontribs) at 06:24 on 18 April 2010

silver vase[edit]

when i dropped rodericks medicine it looked like a silver vase is this a glitch?.

Moved notes[edit]

  • If you have returned the Mysterium Xarxes to Martin as part of the Dagon Shrine quest, an Oblivion gate will open nearby as part of the Attack on Fort Sutch non-journal quest.
  • You can place Rodrick's medicine back in the cabinet and remove the poison after the message that you should return to the Sanctuary.

The first one is somewhat notable, though since no important parts of the quest take place in the above-ground portion of the fort I moved it here. The second one doesn't appear to be noteworthy to me. Feel free to re-add them if you feel otherwise. --AKB Talk 04:28, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Replacing poison after quest[edit]

Will Roderick still die if the poison is replaced with the medicine after the quest has ended?--149.160.118.185 16:38, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

When the quest ends, Roderick and the poison disappear. Legoless 16:44, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
