still, you can use sneak/invisiblity to get to the ruin entrance by circling the rins from southern side and cut out Falcar's escape route. He won't engage in fight with you, running to the ruin, so if you manage to land a single well poisoned arrow at him, you'll save a lot of work. You'll also start cursing the invisible walls around Cyrodiil if you haven't done so yet.

I don't know if anyone else has had this happen, but I sneaked around behind the ruins on the left and waited for Falcar to run back. I was wearing the Ring of Khajiiti (35% chameleon) and even though I attacked him face to face it still counted as murder. Also, even after the ambushers attacked the group of necromancers the music was still exploration and not battle. I don't think I technically took part in that battle at all. I eventually settled on pick-pocketing the right instead, (the game counted the theft against me!) and then when the battle was over the one remaining paladin ran straight past me into the ruin, apparently doing his best to take out Falcar, even though I already had the soul-gem. Probably a bug.

Cleanup[edit]

The Notes section here is.... extraordinary. All the information seems relative and arbitrary. It needs to be put into context; Faclar's health, the other NPCs - all of this is leveled. Can anybody do anything to help clean this up? I don't have a character close enough at the moment. --RpehTCE 14:00, 21 October 2007 (EDT)

Easiest Method[edit]

The easiest method is slightly covered in here. Simply sneak with full cammo, and steal the gem from him. You can optionally keep him alive this way too, but he has a fire enchanted dagger you may want to add to your armoury.

- KermEd

The enchantment on the dagger is random, mine was a disintegrate enchantment. Shadowrose6663 02:57, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Seconded. I tried this myself just now. For anyone else who may want to try it, I did kill Falcar after I pickpocketed the gem from him, and I don't know if it would have made any difference if I hadn't (I doubt it). My char's relevant stats at the time were:
  • Agility = 72
  • Speed = 50
  • Luck = 50
  • Sneak = 75
  • Security = 100
  • 100% chameleon at the time I rushed him (in sneak mode) and picked his pocket.
I did hit him with a paralyze-poisoned blade before I pickpocketed him. -- Cheats-Like-Crazy 04:31, 10 January 2008 (EST)
Paralysis makes this simple, I had my Mage's Staff of Paralysis, I ran out, hit him with it, then killed him with my sword while he was down. Piece of cake. Shadowrose6663 02:58, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Wanted to second the sneak method. I'm an expert of sneak plus I have two chameleon rings, that aside, I used an invisibility potion, had my crew hang back, and just pick-pocketed the gem and ran away. 68.202.196.130 02:49, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Observation[edit]

If you hit the necromancers and Falcar with an area Fury spell, not only will they comically turn on each other, but Falcar's flight back to the ruin will be much slower - he'll stop every few steps to be Furious, then keep running.

Rares in the mission[edit]

Im a collecter of rare items and im wondering if its possible to duplicate the colossal black soul gem, or use staff of corruption on falcar then kill both of them to get 2 colossal black soul gems *using ps3 console*

Actually, you can. Whilst I find it most annoying, the colossal black soul gem gets stuck in your inventory after you get it from Hannibal Traven's body. Gratz

what is the purpose of falcar's key?[edit]

the wiki article mentions to get the key from falcar, but i don't see what the point is. could someone point it out for me?

That's a very good question... The Keys page says that his key opens his door in the Cheydinhal Mages Guild, a door you have already have to open to get this far into the quest line. Given this, I've removed the comments about the key from this article. Thanks! –RpehTCE 04:53, 22 February 2008 (EST)

I thought I'd mention that although this quest is complete, Falcar's key is still a permanent quest item in my inventory, and cannot be removed. Don't know if anyone else has had this problem . . . (PS3 user).71.224.13.163 20:51, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Marcus

Notes Cleanup[edit]

I have noticed that parts of the page seem to repeat information that has already been given, should these be deleted or are they needed for some reason?

No Battlemages[edit]

I've done the Ambush quest twice, and neither time were there any Battlemages at Silorn when I arrived. My first Journal Entry after arriving and taking a few steps was the stage 30 message, "I have been discovered by the Necromancers . . ." I never saw Battlemages anywhere in the ruins, or outside after killing Falcar and getting the Black Soul Gem, or back at the Arcane U reporting to Traven.

I'm a brand new editor here and am unsure what to do. Is it appropriate to simply add a "Note" to the article to the effect that such a thing might happen? I'm using the PS3 console, and for all I know this oddity is PS3-specific or there was some local bug with my game.

Cake 12:17, 8 July 2008 (EDT)

I've actually had the same thing happen the other day, althought it didn't really cause any problems for the quest or the Mannimarco one.

Sheogorath's Staff[edit]

I recently attempted using this on Falcar & co to get into a better position once they are in the open, however falcar merely runs back to the entrance of silorn. Has anyone else had this happen, or know if it's a bug/intentional? Alphaman 01:08, 3 August 2008 (EDT) Alphaman

Well Shivering Isles was made awhile after Oblivion, so perhaps Falcar...wait....isn't there a Falcar in Morrowind? You find his ring upon first starting the game?.....meh....anywhoo, perhaps Falcar wasn't properly programmed to respond to the Staff of Sheogorath. Then again, I'm not familiar with scripts and the construction kit, so yeah...only my opinion. DaedryonTCE 01:16, 3 August 2008 (EDT)
Except that the staff works elsewhere in the main game, and it even worked on the necromancers/mages surrounding him when I used it. He was the only npc to move afterwards (and it did clearly hit him, the effect's aura showed up on him like any other magic).AlphamanT

The Battlemages[edit]

Where do they go after you complete the mission and they survive? 68.112.143.25 13:42, 27 December 2008 (EST)

See the discussion on this page. The answer seems to be that they disappear, although if you've installed any mods that might not be the case. Dr Jones 15:10, 27 December 2008 (EST)

Another easy method of killing Falcar[edit]

If you chose the Mage's Staff of Paralasys (or whatever it is spelled), use it on him as he tries to escape. Cast a some spells or stab him a couple times. When he's getting up, Paralyse him again. Spells/stabbing, Paralyse, repeat. In my experience, the Necromancers will mostly ignore you and instead head for the Battlemages. — Unsigned comment by 87.210.177.121 (talk)

Thanks, but its already on the page; in the Alternate Method 3 section. --SerCenKing 14:09, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

Um,I cant find out how.....[edit]

to get Falcar.I told the battlemages where to go,then the necromancers came out and after they were gone I went into the fort after Falcar,he had gotten past two gates that were remotly opened.I cant get through.Do any of you know how to get past and get Falcar? 75.4.4.183 01:15, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

You have to take a detour. See the article about Silorn for details on the route. --Timenn-<talk> 10:10, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Mages[edit]

The comment on the notes seem a little unlikely, about the mages going to the end of the dungeon and killing Falcar, could anyone verefy it?--Arch-Mage Matt 00:02, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Capturing Falcar's soul into the colossal black soul gem[edit]

I pickpocketed the soul gem from Falcar and wanted to capture his soul into this gem. The final irony, so to say, lol. But it doesn't seem to work. Isn't this gem supposed to work like Azura's star, just on humans?

Oh, and the main page doesn't mention that you can actually talk to Falcar (activate him while invisible). You can only talk to him as long as the gem is in his possession. If you pickpocket it, he just goes hostile.

You can use Drain Strength+Burden in a single spell to prevent him from fleeing. The coward! I stopped him in his tracks but good!

WRFan 05:07, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Frenzy[edit]

if you cast a frenzy spell on him, will he stop fleeing into the ruins and fight, giving ou a chance to kill him?

possible bug[edit]

Moved here from main page:

  • A possible non-terminal bug occurred when following Falcar into the ruin. When he was finally run to ground the first time the green marker was showing his location as inside a wall, there was no body to be found and a detect life spell showed no living being. (Perhaps he had spawned inside the wall or clipped into it on death?) On a rerun from the autosave at the dungeon entrance he was battling the random undead that inhabited the chamber as I arrived and was slain by them before I could affect the outcome (player level 34). All necessary items were recoverable from his body and the quest was completed. --- 86.25.161.199 15:20, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Followers[edit]

I currently have the Jemane brothers as my followers, and I decided to bring them along for the ambush. They help fight the necromancers as they should, but afterwards they always begin fighting with the three battlemages. Why is this? I'm guessing they don't see the necromancers as evil so they count it as murder, but then I thought only Reynald would fight because of his high responsibility. Any ideas? 92.1.131.189 16:46, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Maybe one of the brothers accidentally struck one of the battlemages or vice-versa, causing them to lower their disposition towards them and thus making them fight each other. --S'drassa T2M 19:02, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

yet another method[edit]

When Falcar emerges, sneak to the door behind him cutting off his escape. The first time I tried this, he never returned; the battlemages had killed him and the other necromancers outside. One mage survived.

Killing Falcar without it counting as murder[edit]

As with most NPCs, if you poison Falcar and he dies from the poison, it doesn't count as a murder. 66.32.149.75 00:14, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Alternate Method 3 - rm pointless comments about "options" that are impossible[edit]

The highest possible "sneakable" base damage is 100+ Strength, 100+ Blade, and Umbra at 125% Health, which is 33. Saying "you need a base damage of 41 (or 61, or 98)" is not "an alternate method". Aliana 08:28, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Cleanup notice[edit]

I, well, cleaned up the page quite a bit, and i think the notice can be removed. As i am still new to the site i don't know if i am permitted to do so myself. Razor 21:33, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

I've taken off the tag. Great job! Yes, you're allowed to remove it yourself. rpeh •TCE 05:07, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Bug/Interesting Thing[edit]

During this quest I managed to accidentally kill one of the battlemages outside of the ruin, and got suspended (which I was VERY annoyed about!). However, when I got in the ruin and found Falcar, HE sent me to the Arcane University to find Raminus!!!! I killed him, of course, and finished the quest, but I thought it was weird that he still berated me for being suspended and sent me to the university... haha. 86.128.157.48 12:38, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Bug(?) with Falcar fleeing into the wilderness[edit]

Attacking Falcar using 100% Chameleon may cause him to flee above ground rather than heading back into Silorn. In this case, it is possible that he will leave the game borders, making it impossible to complete the quest.

I added a verification tag on this. I tried recreating it about a dozen times... punched him and slowly hacked him to death with a tiny dagger, cast spells on him, picked his pocket so that he noticed, etc. Either he would doggedly slowly advance to the Battlemages (and as soon as he saw them would flee into Silorn properly and the other Necromancers would start combat) or if he went into combat mode earlier than this with the player would flee into Silorn and the quest advanced properly. Kivan 17:42, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm going to remove this "bug". I think this is one of those things that can happen, but almost never does. I've had M'aiq run off into Elsweyr before and other NPCs run over other borders. This is just a case of Stuff Happens. It's not a bug specific to this quest. rpeh •TCE 21:12, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
