Version 0.42[edit]
- A useful resource, but I have noticed that it produces combinations which are not possible in the game. For example with the following settings:
-
- Novice equipment, Alchemy 30, Luck 50
- Select effects: Damage Health + Damage Fatigue
- Uncheck SI and Mod Ingredients
- Click Find Potions
- The results suggested are:
-
- Damage Health + Damage Fatigue
- Damage Health + Damage Fatigue + Damage Magika
- At the Apprentice level (25 -> 50) this second combination is not possible. The ingredients suggested are:
-
- Motherwort (Resist Poison, Damage Fatigue)
- Harrada (Damage Health, Damage Magicka)
- Spiddal Stick (Damage Health, Damage Magicka)
- Bonemeal (Damage Fatigue, Resist Fire)
- Each ingredient must be linked to another by effect. Motherwort can be linked to Bonemeal and Harrada can be linked to Spiddal Stick, but Motherwort cannot be linked to Harrada or Spiddal Stick because netiher ingredient has Resist Poision or Damage Fatigue at the Apprentice level. Therefore this combination is impossible.
- Hope this helps!— Unsigned comment by 92.236.76.43 (talk) on 6th July 2011
- The way around this is to use "catalyst" ingredients, and then to remove them once the desired ingredients are in place. As an example, I have a potion called "CureAll" which cures both poison and disease, but requires some assembly.
- First ingredient slot, Withering Moon (this can be just a catalyst)
- Second slot, Mandrake
- Third slot, Blackberry (this is *definately* a catalyst ingredient)
- Fourth slot, Strawberry
- Going back to the third slot, swap out the Blackberry for a Ginseng
- Going back to the first slot, you can swap out the Withering Moon for an Elf Cup if you want.
- The first two ingredients have nothing in common with the Strawberry without using the Blackberry as a linker in the third slot; using "catalyst" ingredients is the easiest way to end-around some "impossible" combinations.
I am unable to edit the ingredient list. I don't have SI, but I do have other mods, so I don't want to deselect the option to include mod ingredients. However when I click Show Ingredient List, the list is displayed, but I am only able to exclude one ingredient from the list at one time. I would like to go through and select "never" for all the SI ingredients but I can't. I can select "never" for the first in the list, but as soon as I try to select "never" for another SI ingredient, it puts the previous one I selected back in the list. I think the scope for the radio buttons is too broad or something. Another option would be to have the option to deselect the SI ingredients as a separate option from other mod ingredients. AndalayBay 21:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
I agree, it is a great app. It does seem to still have a significant error though:
Even though a character is only allowed to see so many effects for a given ingredient at lower than the "expert" alchemy skill tier, I do not believe that means that only viewable effects are available for creating mixtures. If you go back and read what is said when advancing in skill tiers in the alchemy skill you should notice that it says that so many effects are viewable, but that there are more effects that are actually active in an ingredient for that new skill tier. For example, when going from the "apprentice" tier to the "journeyman" tier the message displayed says your character can now see three effects for a given ingredient, but it also says there are actually now FOUR effects active for the ingredients in Cyrodiil. Your calculator does not seem to take this into account. I tried computing a potion that had Fortify Health + Fortify Magicka + Restore Health + Restore Magicka + Restore Fatigue at an alchemy skill level of 51(journeyman) and I was told that at my current settings it was not possible. However, I suspect it is possible given the in-game message I mentioned above. I thought you may want to check this out and change the calculator to be more true to the game if this is in fact the reality of how things function in Oblivion. Thank you for your hard work though, the calculator overall is outstanding. — Unsigned comment by 76.212.165.172 (talk) on 3 January 2009
- That's not an error but the way the game works (at least for Oblivion; things are different in Morrowind). Before posting that there is a "significant error" in the calculator, could you please at least take the time to test what happens when you're playing the game instead of guessing at what you think should happen? --NepheleTalk 14:17, 3 January 2009 (EST)
- Yea, I just tested it, my bad. If it doesn't work like that though then why give the game message notifying that there are more active effects then those viewable...? — Unsigned comment by 76.212.165.172 (talk) on 3 January 2008
Thanks for the program. I put the following 3 effects: Feather + Restore Health + Fortify Strength. The resulting Ingredients combination all include Venison which makes the potions have a minimum weight of 0.6lbs. However, Venison can be replaced by Sweetcake, which gives a potion with the exact same effects, but much lighter, just 0.1lbs (Sweetcake + Lady's Mantle Leaves + Elf Cup Cap + Garlic). I don't know why this combination doesn't appear on the possible potions list. I did select "Include Rare Ingredients" and all ingredients are marked as "M". I even used Alchemy level = 100.
This is a terrific resource.
[ignore this] There is a possible bug in effect linkage though:
Alchemy skill 100 / Allow negative side effects / No Ingredient options selected.
Choosing Feather + Fortify Strength effects.
The calculator returned 15 matches of requested effects only -- none of which actually work.74.14.21.63 18:58, 17 December 2008 (EST) [/ignore this]
The above bug report is in error. I didn't notice the "View All" button allowed the user to combine non-linked effects into a single potion. Please ignore everything below "This is a terrific resource".74.14.20.110 01:18, 20 December 2008 (EST)
This is not a bug, but you should include the possibility of selecting six effect, as it is possible to have six-effect potions or poisons.
i noticed a bug in the alchemy calculator. when i set my alchemy level to 100, luck 60, and use a master mortar and pestle and master calcinator, it says burden will be 45 pts for 180 seconds, however, when i do the exact same thing on xbox 360 it says 33 pts for 133 seconds. 67.187.172.247 08:43, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
The order of selected effects should not have any bearing on the list of potions but it currently does. For example Damage Intelligence, Damage Willpower, Damage Health, Damage Magicka finds 30 potions. But Damage Health, Damage Magicka, Damage Intelligence, Damage Willpower only finds 25 potions.
Trebor 01:28, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
Why the Alchemy Calculator is completed bugged? It gives me wrong values of the effects depending on the Alchemy skill level and the qualities of the apparatus. It's only a my problem or even others? --176.207.111.153 17:19, 20 January 2020 (GMT)
Version 0.4[edit]
Very useful program indeed. There is a problem though. With multi-effect potions it yields impossible combinations. For example if you try to create Shield + Fire Shield, with journeyman alchemy level, it will suggest the impossible combination: Cheese Wedge + Flax Seeds + Lettuce + Bog Beacon Asco Cap. — Unsigned comment by 85.130.37.24 (talk)
- I'm not sure what you mean by "impossible" combination, because you can combine any four ingredients you want. I'm guessing that all that's wrong is that you're not selecting the "Show All Ingredients" option. --NepheleTalk 16:29, 19 May 2008 (EDT)
- I can't get the calculator to work in the way our anonymous friend suggests. Having spent some time trying to create potions with the effects he describes, I've not been able to recreate anything like the result he achieved. If 85.130.37.24 could describe the exact settings used, it would be helpful. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 17:22, 19 May 2008 (EDT)
- I'm not having any problems getting that combination to appear: alchemy=50, turn off SI ingredients, request a potion with Shield and Fire Shield. The stated combination pops up right away, with the additional effects Restore Fatigue and Restore Magicka. Furthermore, as far as I can tell it's a completely legitimate combination that will work as advertised by the calculator at alchemy 50-74. --NepheleTalk 17:35, 19 May 2008 (EDT)
- Yes. My mistake. I never knew there is option that allows me to add ANY components. Looks like the calculator works perfectly. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Small Bug[edit]
Simply that the wrong equation is being used to calculate negative duration-only effects in poisons when using an alembic. It is most obvious with silence effects, say by combining Bergamot Seeds and Vampire Dust. At Master level with Master tools, the game gives you a 26 second duration, but the calculator comes out to 33.
I had this problem in my own program. I was accidentally using the formula that only applies to negative effects with both duration and magnitude (when using an alembic). It shouldn't apply with effects that don't have a magnitude.
Thanks for making the calculator, I really love the interface. — Unsigned comment by 71.90.128.166 (talk) on 8 August 2008
- Thanks for pointing this out. It had actually already been on my todo list (see this discussion), but I hadn't gotten around to doing it yet. The problem was actually not related to the Alembic, but the Retort. In any case, it's now been fixed. --NepheleTalk 16:14, 11 August 2008 (EDT)
Version 0.3[edit]
Requests for enhancements[edit]
1) It would be nice to put a limit on the final weight of the potion - whilst it's possible to make some really effective potions, pumkins and minotaur horns make potions too heavy to carry a decent number!
2) When showing recipes, it'd be nice if it sorted ingredients by name - that way, the same combinations look the same (and it's easier to select from one's inventory).
Overall, it's a very good tool though - it's spotted combinations I'd overlooked. Many thanks, Peter.
Comment and Bug Report[edit]
Congratulations and Thanks for a great program. I'm having more fun playing with the combos than actually playing ES4:O! go figure...
As for the bug report (or suggestion), i noticed that if you choose expert or higher and the following effects: Restore Health, Fortify Health and Fortify Endurance, the calculator gives out 3 potions, one of which is a full set of selected effects + Restore Magica + Burden under "(3a) Potions with Restore Magicka", when there is a much better choice without burden with the following ingredients: Blackberry, Boar Meat, Cinnabar Polypore Yellow Cap, Painted Troll Fat. "Allow negative side-effects in potions" was on, but it will display the combo if you turn it off. Quest and Rare Ingredients was on. By the way, if you do go the SI way, please option it.
Thank you for your attention. Stein.
Hello! I was very happy to discover this program, and the interface is great, but I'm getting frustrated at the amount of invalid potions it tries to create. For example, if you search for a potion that cures both poison and disease, it will find a large number that supposedly have just those two effects, but this particular combination seems to be impossible. It also told me I could make a potion with reflect damage, fortify luck, and restore fatigue with flour, primrose leaves, green stain shelf cap, and strawberry, but again this didn't work at all, and I couldn't even combine all the ingredients (and this was with 100 skill). I'm not sure what the issue is, but apparently it doesn't always make sure there are two ingredients with the effect that it lists in the potion. Thanks for taking the time to make this tool. --Wendy
- I get one solution row for the double cure potion (Ginseng, Mandrake Root, Elf Cup Cap plus one of Redwort Flower, St. Jahn's Wort Nectar or Strawberry) and that would definitely work. Likewise the reflect, restore and fortify potion should work (I don't have the game with me so I can't test, I have to confess). I think what might be happening is that you're not seeing the ingredients in your list. You will probably need to click the "Show All Ingredients" button in order to find the ones you can't see. The reason for this is that the game tries to help by only showing ingredients that will combine with what you have already selected. For instance, if you pick Flour first, it won't show you Primrose Leaves or Green Stain Shelf Cap because neither of them have a Restore Fatigue, Damage Personality, Fortify Fatigue, or Reflect Damage effect that would combine with the flour. I hope that helps. --RpehTalk 03:27, 27 September 2007 (EDT)
Bug Report[edit]
Really great program!!! One small thing, when I creating Reflect Damage (24%, 78s) with Flour and Scamp Skin the weight is 0.9 but the program says Potion weight = 0.6. I don't now why (1+0.2)/2 = 0.6 Maybe one of the weight is wrong (wrong decimals)? I did rename the potion several times. --Robert Smith 17:57, 20 May 2007 (EDT)
- Aha, the weight of scamp skin is actually 1.5, not 1.0, so (1.5+0.2)/2 = 0.85, rounds to 0.9. I'll try to remember to fix that next time I update the calculator. --NepheleTalk 18:24, 20 May 2007 (EDT)
Comments[edit]
Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if there's any talk or progress on the SI ingredients yet? :O --208.54.14.76 22:03, 26 April 2008 (EDT)

wow this is great. Any plans to include the SI ingredients? — Unsigned comment by Fonger (talk • contribs)
- I may eventually get done, but as far as I know the writer (Nephele) hasn't played through SI yet, so we'll have to wait for that, I'd assume. --Ratwar 02:22, 17 May 2007 (EDT)
Version 0.2[edit]
Bug Report[edit]
The calculator sometimes lists more effects than a given combination can have. For example: Alchemy 76, Luck 58, all equipment Apprentice, Damage Health+Fire Damage, all other options at their defaults. Now look at "Potions with Silence" and there is a potion with tree ingredients and five effects. Otherwise, great work! -joe- 13:28, 3 October 2006 (EDT)
- Where did you hear that there's a limit of 4 effects on a potion? I can get a potion with 4 effects using only 2 ingredients. (Using both versions of Vampire Dust or Bonemeal.) Then you've got 2 more spots to add ingredients. In fact, you could have a potion with 8 effects by using both Vampire Dusts AND both Bonemeals. Any effect which exists on 2 or more ingredients will be in the potion. There's no 4-effect limit. --TheRealLurlock 13:57, 3 October 2006 (EDT)
- Potions can indeed have more than 4 effects. As stated at Oblivion:Alchemy#Effects, "The potion-creation screen will show up to five effects. In fact, up to eight effects can be simultaneously present in a single potion/poison (all will be shown when you look at the vial in your inventory)." --Nephele 16:49, 3 October 2006 (EDT)
- OK, I guess I haven't made myself completely clear. The potion in question consists of Steel Blue Entoloma Cap + Harrada + (Imp Gall OR Spiddal Stick). The calculator claims it does Damage Health + Fire Damage + Silence + Damage Magicka + Paralyze. In reality, the potion only does Damage Health + Fire Damage (if you use Imp Gall), OR Damage Health + Damage Magicka + Fire Damage (if you use Spiddal Stick). Only one ingredient contributes Silence and Paralyze, hence these effects cannot be present in the final potion. -joe- 14:08, 19 October 2006 (EDT)
- Thanks for the clarification; sorry I didn't understand what you were saying the first time around. I'll look into that case, see what's going wrong, and make sure it's fixed in the next release of the calculator (which should be posted in the near future!) --Nephele 16:01, 19 October 2006 (EDT)
Comments[edit]
- It kicks ass! --FMan 18:46, 16 September 2006 (EDT)
One known problem that I'm still working on is the appearance in IE6 (the text is much larger than it's supposed to be in IE6). I'll be experimenting with a few more CSS options in the next week to see if I can fix this issue. --Nephele 17:58, 16 September 2006 (EDT)
If only there were one for Morrowind -hint, hint.....- Anyway, it looks great, just a little jumbled. --Werdnanoslen 17:37, 16 September 2006 (EDT)
My only suggestion, as a player who mainly makes potions for profit, would be to create a value calculator in the skill calculation section (no need for it in the potions section, since most are the same price, unless they have static effects) --Bartender47 01:42, 17 September 2006 (EDT)
Why doesn't it use AJAX? I know that requires extra coding, but the calculator feels a little clumsy without it. Other than that this is an excellent tool. I'd like to see the equivalent made for Morrowind and Daggerfall. GarrettTalk 17:37, 17 September 2006 (EDT)
I'd like a printable page of just my recipes, something i can refer to while playing. Other than that, it's very bitchin'. I disagree about it being clumsy - feels fine to me. And AJAX is not for everything.
- This is an excellent tool, but could it be updated to include Direnni's Alchemy Equipment? This is equipment from a well-done mod which adds a full set of alchemy equipment with a quality of 125% Caius 05:48, 20 September 2006 (EDT)
Superb tool - I've been using the Alchemy Wizard at http://oblivion.melian.cc/?cmd=cmdOblivionPotions up until now, but it feels like a Model T up against a GT by comparison. Thanks for taking the time! -- Butlins 22:40, 25 September 2006 (BST)
- Downloading the Alchemy Calculator and A Kit
If possible, the Alchemy Calculator should be downloaded. But why stop there, we should make a downloadable kit that has the Alchemy Calculator, a Character Creation, Hints and Guides, and any thing else we could possibly shove into this kit. Hope you like the ideas!
--Darth Wookiee--
awesome work, the greatest initial benefit i gained was being able to see what effects were possible at my respective skill level, sweet! macFodder --203.166.124.3 23:06, 10 January 2007 (EST)
--Shivering Isles?-- Thsi calculator is great, but is there a version comming out to include SI Ingredients also?

Feedback[edit]
Thanks for all the comments. I've put together a new release of the calculator taking into account most of these comments. Also, this new release will fix some bugs that appeared a couple weeks ago when the server's PHP was upgraded. A couple items that are still in the works:
- Ajax: The calculator is now set up to take full advantage of ajax. However, for this release I've chosen to make ajax optional, and it must be explicitly turned on (there's a button in the introduction section). Feel free to use it and provide feedback, but expect some bugginess until I've had a chance to check out how it works more thoroughly.
- Morrowind: I haven't set up a Morrowind version of the calculator yet. However, I have been looking into it, and it is on my list of future improvements. The biggest problem right now is that I don't know of any equations to calculate potion strengths for Morrowind. If anyone knows of any such equations, I would be very interested in the information. Or else I'll probably eventually try to work them out myself. In the meantime, I may start by setting up a version that just puts together ingredients without any strength calculations. A Daggerfall version would also be possible at that point, although I have even less information on potions in Daggerfall... so I may be asking you for info, Garrett, when I get to that point :)

Stunningly impressive[edit]
The alchemy calculator is amazingly well-done. I'd go so far as to say it's one of the best Ajax webapps I've seen (certainly one of the most useful to me). My compliments, and thanks! --Saucepan 03:52, 28 April 2007 (EDT)

Bug Report[edit]
When searching for a poison with Damage Health + Shock Damage + Silence I came across an error. I used 100 Alchemy, Master equipment, exact matches only, and include rare ingredients and got a recipe with Ectoplasm + Harrada + various, etc. When I had it include SI and mod ingredients as well the list of recipies did not include the first recipe (i.e. Ectoplasm + Harrada + various, etc.). Anyone searching for this poison recipe who starts out by including SI and mod ingredients is going to believe that any recipe must include SI ingredients. --Foubister 03:35, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

The listing of the combinations by which you can get the desired effect is pretty arbitrary. Could all of the combinations be listed by terms of the resulting potion weight instead? Rare Ingredient[edit]
I would like to lobby for Dryad Saddle Polypore Cap to be taken out of the rare ingredient catagory and given a "2". Compared to the alternatives, Frost Salts an Vampire Dust, it is cheaper to buy and safer to get. From level one on you can fast travel to Wendir and Namira's shrine (for the nearby rune stone) every three days and pick up around ten total without any danger of attack. It is also growing in the Arcane University. When playing at max difficulty without conjuring, it is useful/necessary in fighting Flame Atronachs at level 9, at level 10 for Peryites shrine quest, and up to level 17-18 for the Battle of Kvatch et al. Vampire dust is not sold in shops, and is dangerous to get. Frost salts are extremely expensive and very difficult to get once Frost atronachs do appear at level 15.Chicken Slayer (talk) 18:42, 2 January 2016 (UTC)

The calculator is broken[edit]
It is not working as it used to. Most notably it doesn't take into account the alchemy equipment you choose. Even worse changing the equipment causes the effect lists to bug in a way that all effects disappear and you can only choose "none." However even if the lists don't bug the effects magnitudes and durations remain the same as before changing the equipment bars. There also appears to be a problem with results, as the calculator will often say that such a combination of effects is not possible even if it is. — Unsigned comment by 93.105.250.220 (talk) at 19:00 on 6 October 2019 (UTC)

[feature request] Filter results by minimum / maximum effects[edit]
Please add "Min/max desired effects" and don't show (or hide behind XHTML) potions that do not satisfy specified filters. Also, having ingredient list (as part of user input) is kind of illogical after potions (program output).
