Connection?[edit]

This Taren shares the same name with Taren from Master Zoaraym's Tale, and, in that story, it is said that Taren wants to go to Morrowind to fight for his people's independance. Is it possible that they are the same person? --Twentyfists 19:44, 27 February 2008 (EST)

Given that he's the Master Trainer of Hand-to-hand and the book is a Hand-to-hand Skill Book, I'd say it's more than likely. Good catch. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:13, 27 February 2008 (EST)
The books also says that he became a priest and a teacher (trainer?) when he left. That could be it. The book seems to imply that Taren is really good in that sort of Hand-to-hand combat, and this Taren is excellent in the same thing. He also lives in a monastery, so that'd pretty much follow. (He's a monk by class, not a priest, but close enough.) Makes me wonder how many other master trainers appear in books. I know of at least 3 off the top of my head - Sirollus Saccus (The Armorer's Challenge), Abelle Chriditte (The Cake and the Diamond), and Ababael Timsar-Dadisun (The Buying Game). --TheRealLurlock Talk 01:48, 28 February 2008 (EST)
There's also Missun Akin, who is mentioned in The Black Arrow. Volume II of that book is a Marksman skill book, so I've added some notes to the NPC and book pages along the same lines as here. --Gaebrial 09:51, 28 February 2008 (EST)
Addendum: Just noticed that the Light Armor master trainer, Aerin, is mentioned in The Rear Guard. --Gaebrial 09:57, 28 February 2008 (EST)
Addendum #2: And Ernse Llervu, the blunt weapon master trainer, is briefly mentioned in Hallgerd's Tale. Funny how somebody mentions one, and then you find loads. --Gaebrial 10:02, 28 February 2008 (EST)
Doing a search for all the names, I came up with 5 more:
For a total of 12 out of 27. That's probably all of them, at least according to a search for their names. (Others might be described but not named in books, though that'd be harder to prove.) Oddly enough, NONE of the Oblivion master trainers are mentioned in any books. Closest is a reference to Aerin from Morrowind, at whose camp you meet Torbern instead, though she's mentioned as an Acrobatics trainer rather than Light Armor as she is in Morrowind. --TheRealLurlock Talk 13:07, 28 February 2008 (EST)

The only reason I found this at all was because Master Zoaraym's Tale is one of my favorite in-game books, and I was checking to see if the "Taren" in the book was the master trainer in Hand-to-hand so that I could create some backstory for one of my Oblivion characters. --Twentyfists 17:40, 29 February 2008 (EST)
