The Spear of the Hunter is an artifact associated with, and often wielded by, the Daedric Prince Hircine. It has a floral pattern adorned on its spear head, which has a crosspiece that curves downward on one end. Like another spear associated with Hircine, the Spear of Bitter Mercy, little is known about it, and the Spear is one of the more mysterious artifacts in Tamrielic lore.[1]

History[edit]

The spear was rumored to have been awarded to the Nerevarine for their participation in Hircine's Great Hunt, which took place on the island of Solstheim in 3E 427. The Great Hunt involved the island's four champions taking part in the hunt as Hares: the Nerevarine, Karstaag the Frost Giant, Captain Falx Carius of Fort Frostmoth, and Tharsten Heart-Fang, leader of the Skaal and holder of Hircine's Ring. It is unknown if the Nerevarine took part in the Hunt as a Hound or as a human/mer. The Hare had to navigate a maze filled with werewolves to reach the Hunter. The Nerevarine made it through the maze, but in order to escape the Hunt, they were required to fight an aspect of Hircine (Strength, Speed, or Guile). The Nerevarine succeeded in defeating the Hunter, causing the glacier to collapse and ending the Hunt of Hircine.[2]

Notes[edit]

  • The Spear of the Hunter is referenced in one interpretation of the story of the Lusty Argonian Maid that was performed during the Interregnum.[3]
  • Earrings fashioned after the Spear of the Hunter were not uncommon during the Interregnum.[4]
