Collection List Discussion[edit]

Collecting Guard Armor as a Dark Brotherhood Quest[edit]

I threw out the idea of making it a personal quest to assassinate one guard from each city and collect their armor as a trophy. I decided to make a quest outline for this. Anyone who would like to perform this "quest" can just follow these steps. Go to each town and assassinate a guard using the methods described below. Some of these methods will require you to have master skills and custom spells. The methods for killing the guard usually has something to do with the town. There are purposely no links provided with this information to force anyone planning on doing this to perform their own research in order complete each assassination. --Shalley303 18:43, 27 February 2008 (EST)

Anvil[edit]

Drown a guard in the Abecean Sea. Use Command Humanoid on the guard at the dock gate, have him follow you underwater, and then paralyze him as he is swimming up for air. To do this you will need touch spells for max command humanoid, and paralyze for 15-20 seconds or more (whatever your magicka can handle). Both spells will cost around 150-200 magicka, and require master illusion skill. You will need a water breathing spell, or constant effect water breathing item. You will probably need some strong restore magicka potions to be able to keep casting these spells. There is a very deep section of water just south of the lighthouse that you can drag the guard to. Let him dive under the water after you. Wait for him to start swimming up and follow him. When he is about half way up cast paralyze on him. Even if his head goes above water he won't breath new air and should drown. Casting paralyze once will not result in any sort of assault charge, but if you cast it a second time it will result in a bounty if there is any guard close enough to witness it.

Bravil[edit]

Have a guard commit suicide by attacking another guard. For this you will need a max target frenzy spell. I found that waiting for the guards to sleep and sneaking into their barracks proved to be the most reliable way of doing this. You will need to remain unseen for this to work right. With master sneak you should be able to just stay in the back dark corner of the room for this, but using chameleon would help. Go into sneak and launch a frenzy across the room into a sleeping guard. Some or all of the guards will get up and then lay back down. As soon as they lay down target another guard next to the first one and cast frenzy on them. If all goes according to plan the first frenzy guard should come under attack by all the other guards in the room and be slaughtered. If you get spotted the second frenzy guard will attack you blowing your cover.

Bruma[edit]

Pull a Brown Bear or two over to the east gate and let them tear apart a guard. You will need to be at least level 16 for this. All Brown Bears are part of a level creature list, and don't start spawning until you're level 16. You should be able to find one or two bears on the south road leading to IC. You will need to be careful with this. Make sure that the bears do not kill you in the process. When you get to the gate you will need to go into sneak and cast invisibility. It will take a few seconds for the bear to switch targets to the guard. Two bears will destroy a guard, and in my testing they killed two guards, a horse, and a named NPC without losing half their health. You will need to make sure that they don't go crazy and start killing too many things. Your objective should be a single guard, and you should be able to kill the bear pretty easily after the guard is dead.

Cheydinhal[edit]

Use a Poison Apple to dispatch any guard. It is assumed that by taking on these quests that you are already a member of the Dark Brotherhood and are familiar with obtaining and using a poison apple. However if you are not there are two places you can obtain them besides the Dark Brotherhood merchant. There is a barrel at the end of Fort Farragut that contains ten poison apples that respawn every three days. There is a single poison apple on a small ledge sticking out from the wall near the unlockable door in Bravil Wizard's Lair. Once you have obtained a poison apple you will need to target a guard and give him the poison apple through reverse pickpocking. Be sure that you clear out any food or drink items he may have on him. Be sure to give him the apple before he starts his eat packages because he wont start eating it after his eat package has already begun. You will need to figure out the schedule of your target guard for this to work properly. It may be a wise idea to also clear out any food items from around where he will be eating, as you don't want him to be tempted to eat something other than the poisoned apple. You must be in the same room as the guard when he starts his eat package. It is usually easiest to slip him the apple early in the day, clear out his eating area, and then waiting for the hour before he starts eating.

Chorrol[edit]

Create a cursed bound helmet and slip it into the pocket of a sleeping guard. You will need the Bound Helmet spell, an enchanting alter, and a soul gem. Cast the bound helmet spell, repair the bound helmet to 125 or get it damaged below 100, drop it on the ground and wait for the spell to run out. Then pick the helmet up and enchant it with a fire damage spell. Instead of casting the Bound Helmet spell you can also use the Sidri-Ashak Rune Stones. The guard will equip the helmet when he wakes up and slowly burn to death.

Kvatch[edit]

Due to the sad state of Kvatch just collect the armor off a fallen guard. If you haven't done the Kvatch quests yet, then your target should be Ilend Vonius since he is the only nonessential guard with a shield. He is a guard inside the Oblivion gate who you will usually find fighting Deadra along the left path after you enter the world. Simply let him get overmatched by the enemies and die. You can even heal up the Deadra as he is fighting them to ensure his demise. If you have already finished the Kvatch quests, but managed to keep him alive, then seek him out and murder him in any fashion you wish.

Leyawiin[edit]

Sneak attack kill any guard while they are sleeping. Since guards are leveled NPCs you should plan on doing this with 100% Chameleon, the best one handed sword you can get your hands on (Honorblade of Chorrol, Deadric Longsword, Goldbrand), and your Strength and Blade as close to 100 as possible. You will probably only be able to get two 6x sneak attack shots on a guard before they get out of bed so you will need to be able to kill them within two hits. As long as you are behind them, and have 100% chameleon, they should not see you while getting out of bed, nor should any nearby guard. This is the only assassination that is considered murder by the game, and it will be your initiation into the Dark Brotherhood if you are not already a member.

Skingrad[edit]

Make a guard jump to his death. Use Command Humanoid on a guard near the bridge to Castle Skingard. Lead him along the edge of the bridge until he is in the middle and then push him off. You will need a max level command humanoid spell which will require master Illusion. You will need to take off your armor so that the spell has 100% effectiveness. This is tricky to pull off because you will need to lead the guard to one of the ledges at the start of the bridge and then push him up onto it. It is slightly easier to push a commanded humanoid when you're in sneak with run off. You should be able to shove them up onto the ledge. Once they are on it you can slowly walk on the ledge towards the middle of the bridge. As long as they are on the ledge they will follow you and remain on it. If they fall off the ledge you need to restart the process. After you have dragged them to the middle of the bridge it should be easy enough to push them off, but you will need to be careful not to fall down yourself. You can survive the fall if you have enough acrobatics, but it isn't very stealthy to fall on top of a guard who just "jumped" to their death.

Kvatch Armor[edit]

I wanted to give a special note about the Kvatch armor for new players just starting out. There are only two times in the game you can obtain the Kvatch Cuirass. You can get it off any the guards who are present at Kvatch, and later in the game during the main quest you will have the opportunity to meet another Kvatch Solider during the defense of Bruma. During the Breaking the Siege of Kvatch quest you will run into three guards who have persistent corpses, so their dead bodies will remain where they died for the rest of the game. The three guards are Jesan Rilian, Merandil, and Ilend Vonius who you meet inside the Oblivion gate. I mention this because early in the game selling Kvatch Cuirasses off dead guards is a good way to make some money. During the early part of the game you won't have enough strength to be carrying around extra armor you're not going to sell, and you won't have easy access to a non-respawnable container to keep your items in. Before you sell all of the Kvatch cuirasses you should consider keeping one, leaving one on the corpse of a presistent guard and getting it later in the game, or waiting until the defense of Bruma and getting it from the Kvatch Solider.
