Age template[edit]

Just to let you know, I tried something like that in the past, trying to make the Birthday userbox automatically show up on your user page only on your birthday. Unfortunately, there's nothing that causes your page to refresh itself based on time elements, so unless you actually editted the page on the day, it would never actually appear, nor would it disappear the day after unless you editted it again. (And of course, if you're editting the page anyhow, you might as well just put the template there one day and remove it the next instead.) Unfortunately, the time/date functions in wiki code are not useful for doing much other than simply displaying the time/date - they can't effectively be used in conditionals. (Which given the fact that time and date may vary based on your location anyhow is probably for the best.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 00:58, 1 June 2008 (EDT)

Not trying to be a smart-arse here, but then how do Rpeh and Volanaro's locations and day templates work? - Game LordTalk|Contribs 03:35, 1 June 2008 (EDT)
I think the date template works because all it's doing is displaying the date (with Tamriel-ified days and months). I'm still pretty sure you can't use these in an #if or #ifeq construction in order to, say, make a Userbox appear only on certain days. Although looking at it, you MIGHT be able to get it to display your age, although that of course only changes once per year, so it'd be hard to test. It's also possible that while it definitely couldn't be done before, maybe upgrades to the wiki since back when I tried to do this have made it possible? Maybe I should try it again, though I've got most of the year before my birthday rolls around again... --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:20, 2 June 2008 (EDT)
I think the problem was with the category on the birthday template rather than the template itself. As I understood the problem, the idea was for people to put the template on and then just visit a category page to see whose birthday it was at any given time. The problem is that unless you visit the page it doesn't know that it needs to be in the category.
For the age, location and date templates, I believe that anonymous users will be getting out of date results because they all share one cached copy of the pages. Registered users always get a fresh copy (I think) so the values will always be right.
Oh - you get around the localised time problem by getting the date off the server instead. See my location template and remember I'm five hours ahead. –RpehTCE 09:28, 2 June 2008 (EDT)
I'll temporarily set my 16th birthday to tomorrow (3rd June), then we can all see whether it updates itself. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 13:35, 2 June 2008 (EDT)
Nope doesn't seem to work yet. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 11:08, 3 June 2008 (EDT)
I think I'm right in saying that it won't flip over until tomorrow so all is not yet lost. While we're waiting, take a look at Timenn's version of the same template. His idea of using parameters for the birthday rather than hard-coding it is a good one because it means one template becomes useful in many places. It's always a good idea to see if you can genericise a template in this way. –RpehTCE 12:28, 3 June 2008 (EDT)
It was set to flip over today. When I checked it however, it hadn't changed, but I wasn't logged in. Regarding your comment above, I thought that may have been caused by anonymous users sharing one cache. So I've now set it for tommorow so I can try again. As for Timenn's version, I'll have a look, but not now, got to log off. - Game LordTalk|Contribs 12:45, 3 June 2008 (EDT)
Just checked while logged in and you're now 16. Just checked while anonymous and you're still 15. That's exactly what I'd have expected. –RpehTCE 03:23, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

(Outdent) Well, I think anonymous users will just have to see me as a bit younger then. Do you know how often the anonymous cache is cleared by any chance? - Game LordTalk|Contribs 05:16, 4 June 2008 (EDT)

From this, I think it might be 5 hours, but I don't know if that's current and I'm not an expert. Nephele and Daveh are the alpha geeks on this subject. –RpehTCE 05:28, 4 June 2008 (EDT)
