I Apologize[edit]

I didn't mean to do anything wrong; in fact I'm still not clear on what I did do wrong. Unless I missed something on the page, the user refered to a map marker that was non-existant. I was doing the Venerable Vintage quest, and the "W" indicating where the Shadowbanish Wine was located was indicated to be on a map that was apparently not there. I thought, for accuracy's sake, and to prevent frustration for others--and not having the wherewithall to create and insert a map of my own--I'd delete the misleading line.

This is kind of a bummer, because it's my first contribution (anti-contribution?), and I was trying to do something nice. Instead I get called a vandal and a detractor of another's work, and now I'm confused and frustrated. What exactly did I do that I wasn't supposed to, and what should I have done instead? I ask in complete sincerety; I love this site, and respect its contributors, and I certainly don't wan't to be labeled a defiler and have my IP blocked.

PS At the bottom of this very page I'm typing on, it says "Note that all contributions to UESPWiki may be edited, altered, or removed by other contributors." Is it because I've not signed up to become a member that I wasn't allowed to do that?

I am very sorry. I'm the one who should be apologizing here, not you. The message on your talk page was actually supposed to be for IP 69.130.151.203 who made this edit and this edit (thus the mention of Shum gro-Yarug in the message that I mistakenly added to your talk page). About the only excuse I have is that it gets hard keeping track of 10-digit long random sequences of numbers ;)
You did nothing wrong in your edit. The main reason it was undone is that a map is going to be created for that page, which will have the promised "W" map marker on it. In the meantime there is admittedly some potential for confusion. However, having some information about the shadowbanish wine in that section of the article is needed both now and later. And thinking long term, if the text is edited or removed now it is very likely that the editor who adds the map won't remember to restore it. In part it is one of the challenges of the wiki format: articles are often works in progress, and it isn't always easy to have the incomplete article be functional while simultaneously ensuring that the final article will be in the desired format. Also, if you are ever wondering why an edit you made was changed, you can view the page's history to see the edit summary provided with the edit; more information on edit followup is available at After Your Edit is Saved.
And as for becoming a member, no, it definitely is not required before making edits. A large fraction of the edits made to the site every day come from editors who have not registered to become members. On the other hand, there are some advantages to becoming a member (see for example Creating an Account)... one of which is that is much easier to recognize people by names and thus not accidentally post a message on the wrong talk page ;)
But again, this really was completely my mistake. I do hope that you continue to contribute to the site. And thank you for taking the time to respond and point out my mistake (especially given how unresponsive the site is being right now!) Please feel free to ask if you have any questions! --NepheleTalk 15:43, 19 January 2008 (EST)

Oh My God...[edit]

...Right after I sent you a somewhat angrier PM, I reloaded this page and read your follow-up. Like I said, I don't know you from Eve, and you were originally chastizing a real vandal. So you can forget--please forget--100% of the things I inferred about you, I am so very sorry. This was just one horrible misunderstanding, one of the worst I've had over the internet since I sent an email to my boss asking him on a date. He has an iffy sense of humour; I got lucky because he thought it was hillarious. :P

Point taken about leaving info there so it's available when the page is updated.

Frick, I feel so bad now. I'm gonna go read the rules for wiki editing here and put in some work to make up for my rude PM. And I hate reading rules, so it's a penance, believe me. What areas are you most in need of updating? I'll try for those. :)

Sorrysorrysorry!

Ken

Really, there's no need for you to apologize :) I'm the one who made the mistake, and you were more than justified in being angry about getting a warning message. So I'm completely willing to ignore/forget anything you said because you were upset (even without any rule-reading penance!) Now you're making me feel bad about you feeling so bad ;) --NepheleTalk 02:05, 20 January 2008 (EST)
