Falkreath Hold[edit]

Helgen[edit]

On one occasion, I was able to find the body of the Executioner briefly after completing Unbound, but it held no items and soon despawned.

Visiting Whiterun appears to be the trigger for the area to reset, causing the fires to burn out and the bandits to appear.

Anise's Cabin[edit]

All the items in Anise's Cabin are owned and will be marked stolen if taken. However apart from the alchemy skill book Song of the Alchemists, most the useful items are consumables and crafting ingredients, so it makes little difference.

There is an alchemy laboratory and an enchanting laboratory in the cellar.

Anise's body does not despawn. Give her a proper burial somewhere.

The bed is owned initially but becomes available for use when Anise dies.

Anise's Letter in the cellar is the only unique item. It does not show the "Stolen" tag in your inventory, but turns red in a container.

Outside, all the placed items respawn, the harvestable items in the garden and hanging from the roof respawn, and the barrel is the only container to respawn. The Large Sack and Apothecary's Satchel do not respawn despite normally being considered unsafe containers. Unknown: Will placed items outside disappear?

In the cellar, all containers are safe, no placed items respawn.

While all the containers will forever say "Steal from...", it appears the stolen items remain marked stolen and the non-stolen items remain yours. I did not witness the effect of items being changed to owned that happened in Hod and Gerdur's house. Stolen gold can get flagged as owned when deposited, but will not appear that way in your inventory. Unknown if it would be confiscated if arrested.

East-southeast of the cabin on a ledge there is a deer skeleton with a Flawless Emerald inside. It respawns after 10 days.

Bandit Camp northwest of Helgen[edit]

A note about the beehive found here: It is high in a pine tree well out of reach and must be shot down to be accessed. Typically it will roll right into the camp. Items can be stored in it, and it can be picked up and moved around. I saw a very strange thing happen with it: after stashing test items in it and leaving it on the ground at the camp, I entered the back cave of Helgen Keep. Upon exiting, I saw it fall from the sky to the east and roll onto the road north of Helgen. My items were still in it. After a 10 day reset period, it appeared back on the tree, and still contained my items once shot down.

Defying the rules for the Large Sack container type, the one on the west end here does not reset its contents. I wouldn't use it regardless, just to be safe.

There's a bear trap by the tree by the road which curiously the bees can set off.

In wrecked ship which is entirely too large for Lake Ilinalta, you can find a chest with some gold, an Iron Battleaxe lying on the cabin floor, and several nordic barnacle clusters, clams, and a silverfish egg nest.

Riverwood[edit]

If a container is owned and you have no disposition with an NPC, you can get a bounty and they will attack you even for simply depositing an item, regardless of whether you withdraw it after. It will not be marked as stolen.

Some containers are owned by NPCs that may allow you to take items up to a given value depending on your disposition, but not over that value. These containers appear to repossess your deposited items if they are over that value, turning them red. However when witnessed the NPCs are not bother by your depositing and withdrawing them. Furthermore the items that turned red will not be flagged stolen once they enter your inventory, despite appearing that they would.

Hilde will sometimes make a comment when going though the barrels outside her house, "Look at him, rummaging through refuse. I wonder what he's lost, besides his mind."

Jorrvaskr[edit]

Several containers in Jorrvaskr (and several beds) can be used after completing the very easy initial quest, Take Up Arms. In general, sacks and barrels are unreliable. Don't use them except in areas that never respawn, like player homes. The chests, end tables, cupboards, and wardrobes are safe.

Tundra Homestead[edit]

Be careful with the outdoor containers! Some of them respawn. The chest and the strongbox are safe. The large sack and sacks are safe, but the small sack is not. The barrels are not safe. The apiaries are not safe (which is good, you want the ingredients to generate).

The 5 outdoor safe storage containers, the garden and its 8 fertile soil spots, the apiaries, the grindstone, anvil, tanning rack, workbench, and smelter can all be used prior to purchasing the home.

Proventus will offer to sell you Tundra Homestead even before completing Before the Storm.

Proudspire Manor[edit]

Be warned! Of the 29 containers in Proudspire Manor prior to redecoration, only seven remain. Don't use the other 22 or you will lose your items. Five of the seven initial safe containers are in the bedroom. Best to keep all your items in there until the decorations are complete, but do not store them lying outside of containers until afteward. The final home has 14 containers if you fix the housecarl's quarters, 19 if you also add the children's room.

The kitchen decoration adds a 2x11 bookshelf.

The bedroom decoration adds a 1x2 weapon rack and a 2x11 bookshelf.

The enchanting laboratory adds two weapon plaques, two shield plaques, a 1x5 weapon rack, and a 2x11 bookshelf.

The alchemy laboratory adds a 2x11 bookshelf.

The children's room decoration removed the shelves on the left of the bedroom door.

In general, interiors and exteriors often do not fit together well in Skyrim. The children's room addition here is a particularly egregious example, however. It just floats out in space in an area with nothing below it and where there would be no external structure to house it. For that reason I don't like adding it.
