Proper Spelling Notes

When writing guides, be sure to follow proper grammar and spelling. Nothing is more irritating than a solution that works, but is so poorly worded and painful to read that the solution is lost.

Run On Sentences

Run on sentences are sentences that are so damn long that they really need to be split up into multiple segments and often use conjunctions such as 'and', 'or', 'but', and similar words in such an extremely annoying manner, another thing to look out for are commas and the inability to read the sentence without running out of breath and that they cover multiple lines without any breaks or pauses in between.

• Solution: Use periods.

Common Misspellings

• Its/It's
  • Its = OWNERSHIP, same as 'his' or 'hers'. ex. A dragon uses its shout.
  • It's = IT IS. ex. It's raining.

• A lot/Alot
  • A lot = PLENTY. ex. A lot of dragons.
  • Alot = NO SUCH WORD. Unless you're interested in the fictitious animal known as an 'alot'.

• Affect/Effect
  • Effect = NOUN (in standard usage; exceptions are rare, but possible). ex. An effect on your health.
  • Affect = VERB (in standard usage; exceptions are rare, but possible). ex. The civil war affects all of Skyrim.

• Hear/Here
  • Hear = AUDIO ex. I hear a dragon.
  • Here = POSITION ex. Dragons are here in Skyrim.

• Loose/Lose
  • Loose = UNDONE ex. My shoelaces are loose.
  • Lose = DEFEAT ex. You will lose the game.

• There/Their/They're
  • There = POSITION ex. There's a sniper over there.
  • Their = OWNERSHIP ex. Use their version.
  • They're = THEY ARE ex. They're somewhere.

• Weather/Whether
  • Weather = ATMOSPHERE ex. The weather is great.
  • Whether = CHOICE ex. Whether or not you kill him is your choice.

• Your/You're
  • Your = OWNERSHIP ex. Your guide.
  • You're = YOU ARE ex. You're right.

Commas

Commas can alter the meaning of a sentence.

• Call me a taxi. (I require a taxi)
• Call me, a taxi. (I am a taxi [driver])

Semicolons

Semicolons may be used to kill a run on sentence.

• Dragons come in many different colours, all speak in an ancient language.

Change to

• Dragons come in many different colours; all speak in an ancient language.

Both sides of the semicolon must be a full sentence.

Fragments

Written English does not begin with words such as "but". Spoken English may, but not written English.

A sentence requires at least two things: A verb and a noun. "She ran." is a full sentence. A short sentence, but a sentence nonetheless. "But later." is not a sentence. It is a fragment.

Do Not Spam Recent Changes

• The Recent Changes page is what moderators use to catch spam, idiots, and spamming idiots.
• Every time you mash the "Save Page" button, you make another entry.
• Multiply that amongst every user and you will start overcrowding the Recent Changes page with tiny, meaningless edits that push other edits down the list.
• The lower an edit is on the list, the less likely a moderator will locate it, acknowledge the change, and let it continue.
• Moderators can still filter out patrolled edits, so all you are doing by mashing the "Save page" button is pissing off your moderators.
