Thoughts on a rework?[edit]

As things stand, there are two sets of item pages with considerable overlap. One is in the Tamriel Data namespace (Tamriel Data:Items) and lists all the generic items present in Tamriel Data. The other (Tamriel Rebuilt:Items) is in the Tamriel Rebuilt namespace, and lists both unique items added by TR (generally items that appear in quests) and some generic weapons, clothing and armor added by TD. Compare e.g. Tamriel Rebuilt:Weapons and Tamriel Data:Weapons - both currently list the Adamantium War Axe.

The implications of this are that when new releases roll along and make changes to items (e.g. id/icon tweaks), the listing for each generic item needs to be updated on both TR and TD pages. Asides from being a duplication of work, with the shortage of editors on this section of the wiki in particular, those updates often do not happen. The item pages under Tamriel Rebuilt are as a result pretty outdated. Users also tend to come in and not notice the existence of the more up-to-date Tamriel Data item pages, so leave assuming that UESP doesn't have the items listed at all.

The actions I'd like to take are:

  1. Giving all item pages (e.g. Tamriel Rebuilt:Armor) a big disclaimer at the top along the lines of 'for generic armor see Tamriel Data:Armor|this Tamriel Data page'. Like how Tamriel Rebuilt:Books does it, but with more bold and flashing arrows.
  2. Moving the contents of the 'Unique' pages (e.g Tamriel Rebuilt:Unique Weapons) into the main item page for its type (e.g. Tamriel Rebuilt: Weapons), and then deleting the now-empty unique pages. The logic here is that TR only adds unique items anyway, so why have two pages?
  3. Removing any item already listed on the Tamriel Data: Items pages from the Tamriel Rebuilt: Items pages, eliminating duplicate listings.

The links to the item locations pages (e.g. Tamriel Rebuilt:Armor Locations) could be kept in place, and could still list TD items - those pages are perhaps what users more often come in for anyway.

How does that sound? Is there a better way of avoiding the duplicating work problem? I thought about transcluding content from the TD item pages, but you'd end up dragging in PC/SHOTN items also.

It was always my intention to have the namespaces coincide with what is in the ESM files. I just never got around to removing Data stuff from the TR pages. Please go ahead with the plan. —Dillonn241 (talk) 03:38, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. The above setup did in my head match what you explained to me via my old Discord account, but I get nervy around page deletions so felt I should check! I'll go through with these changes over the next week or so.
P.S. The more I move around the TR/TD namespaces, the more I realise just how much time you've saved editors here with various innovations (said namespaces being the obvious example) - so I will take the chance to thank you also for that while I can. —Presto (talk) 09:59, 14 July 2023 (UTC)
All done with updating the TR Armor/Clothing/Weapons pages. Just removing the links here ahead of the (hoped for) deletion of the now redundant Unique XXX pages. Presto (talk) 21:16, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
