Quick Walkthrough

1. Either:
   • As a Telvanni member, speak to Rantela Irenam in Irenam Manor about a task
   • Enter Redram's house, and return to Rantela for 100 gold.
2. Or:
   • Enter Redram Oran's house in Port Telvannis, and either:
     1. As a Telvanni member, speak to Rantela Irenam about Redram Oran for 100 gold.
     2. As a non-Telvanni member, speak to Nevus Ilneram for 25 gold (finishes quest).
3. Talk to Rantela about an investigation and undetected.
4. Enter Odrethi Manor and steal Redram Oran's Report.
   • If detected in the process, return the report to Rantela for 100 gold (finishes quest).
   • If undetected (Wizard rank or higher), return the report to Rantela for 300-500 gold (rank dependent, finishes quest).
   • If undetected (below Wizard rank), return the report to Rantela for 250 gold and a further task.
5. At Rantela's request, speak to Inera Ilneram about revenge.
6. Either:
   • Use a Command Humanoid spell on the Odrethi slave, Oka-Tei, and give him the Coded Message.
   • Report Oka-Tei to the guards.
   • Speak to Inera, wait two days, then speak to her again for a reward (1,500 gold and Inera's Ring of Shaming Silence.
7. Or:
   • Speak to Varrac Odrethi or Tinera Odrethi about revenge.
   • Use a Command Humanoid spell on the Irenam slave, J'Sanda, and give her the Coded Message.
   • Report J'Sanda to the guards.
   • Speak to Varrac or Tinera, wait two days, then speak to them again for a reward (1,200 gold and 2x Messenger Scroll).

Detailed Walkthrough

You can begin this quest in two ways, either by speaking to Rantela Irenam as a member of Great House Telvanni, or by entering Redram Oran's House in the city. Both Irenam Manor and the house are on the city's eastern fringe. Note that this quest is considerably shorter if you are unaffiliated with the Telvanni, and portions are additionally locked off if you are of Wizard rank or higher in the house.

Path of the Unaffiliated

Entering Redram's house will see your journal update as you discover the Dead Body within. Speaking to the city's guards about the dead body topic will see them refer you directly to Irenam Manor. The mistress of the manor, Rantela Irenam, will refuse to speak to you due your lack of Telvannis membership. Her apprentice, Nevus Ilneram will reward you with 25 gold for the information, concluding the quest.

Path of the Telvanni Member

As a member of House Telvanni, you may either begin this quest via the method described above (in which case Rantela Irenam will actually agree to talk to you), or by speaking to Rantela directly within her manor about a task. Said task involves checking on her retainer, Redram Oran. You will therefore need to enter his house, discover his body, and then return to Rantela for 100 gold. Rantela however has a further task on you reporting back, requesting that you assist with an investigation into Redram's death. It seems that she already has her suspicions - Redram was hired to watch her rivals in Odrethi Manor, which she wishes you to now search for evidence of their guilt. You can quiz her on further topics such as Odrethi Manor, Varrac Odrethi and Tinera Odrethi for a hint at an old murder attempt of her own, but for assistance in your task, ask her about undetected. She will give you Rantela Irenam's Shadow Potion.

Before you enter Odrethi Manor, you may wish to consider bringing other means of improving your stealth - whether invisibility potions or a way to quieten your footsteps. The manor itself is directly opposite Irenam Manor, but a guard stands just inside, so drink your concealment potions shortly after entering. The evidence you need is on a table by the Argonian slave, Oka-Tei and takes the form of a letter named Redram Oran's Report. If you are detected in the manor at any point, you can still bring this report to Rantela for 100 gold, although she declines to make further use of your services.

Assuming you are undetected, return to Rantela for a gold reward that scales according to your rank in House Telvanni. Members will get 250, Wizards 300, Masters 350, Magisters 400, and Archmagisters 500. If you are Wizard rank or above in the House, then the quest will end. If you are lower than this rank, Rantela will ask that you speak with Inera Ilneram. She can be found in Ilneram Manor in the northeast of town. Ask her about revenge. She will explain that a direct assault on the Odrethis is too risky, and will outline a plot to link them with Imperial spies. She asks you therefore to place a Command Humanoid spell on the Odrethi's Argonian slave, Oka-Tei, plant a Coded Message upon him, lead him to the docks and then report him to the guards. There are two paths from this point - one involves fulfilling Inera's plan, and the other involves telling all to the Odrethis.

Inera's Path

If you decide to go along with Inera's plan, you'll need a Command Humanoid spell effect. Oka-Tei is only level 2 so should be easy to influence. Once you have successfully cast the spell on him, talk to him to give him the coded missive and instruct him to take it to the docks. Then leave the manor and talk to the guards about revenge. They will move to make their arrest. Speak now to Inera, who will ask you to return in two days time. Do so, and she will reward you with 1,500 gold and Inera's Ring of Shaming Silence. She wil also note that Oka-Tei was tortured, and that the Odrethis managed to talk their way out of any real trouble.

The Odrethi Path

If, being a member of House Telvanni, you decide now is a great time for a double-cross, you can inform Tinera and Varrac Odrethi of the plot by going to Odrethi Manor and speaking to either of them about revenge. They will find the idea of reusing Inera's plan amusing, and will instruct you to implicate Rantela Irenam's slave instead. If you wish to do this, enter Irenam Manor and cast a Command Humanoid spell on the Khajiit slave, J'Sanda. Speak to her to give her the missive, and then talk to any Port Telvannis guard about the revenge topic to have her arrested. Speak to either Tinera or Varrac about revenge to confirm that the deed is done. They will ask you to return in two days.

Once two days have passed, speak to the couple to receive 1,200 gold and 2x Messenger Scrolls. They will note that J'Sanda was tortured and killed, but that Rantela and Inera were able to avoid being seriously implicated. Speaking to either Rantela or Inera after this point will see them express fury at your betrayal and raise their entire households in war against you.

Notes

• The two topics Odrethi Manor and undetected appear as one in Rantela's dialogue, which can be confusing. They are however separate, and clicking on the latter is necessary to get her potion of shadow.

30		Rantela Irenam will not speak to me. Perhaps I should discuss the matter of Redram Oran's corpse with her apprentice.

10		Rantela Irenam has asked that I investigate the disappearance of her retainer by the name of Redram Oran. He has not reported to her in several days now and she fears that he has abandoned his duties to her. She has told me that he owns a housepod just to the east, on the ground level, and has given me the key so that I may let myself in, since the door will be locked.
20		Redram Oran's door was not locked and there is a body on the floor of his housepod which is likely Redram Oran himself. I should report this to Rantela Irenam or perhaps the Port Telvannis guards.
25		There is nothing on the body I found in Redram Oran's house indicating who might be behind this crime, though from the signs of it the victim was murdered by magic. I still cannot be certain that this is indeed Redram Oran.

Intrigue in Port Telvannis (TR_m1_PT_MaI_3)
10		Rantela Irenam has informed me that she hired Redram Oran to watch her bitter rivals, Varrac and Tinera Odrethi, who live in the nearby Odrethi Manor. She believes that he was discovered by either Varrac or Tinera, and they are responsible for his death. Since no evidence of their responsibility was discovered near the body, I have been instructed to enter the Odrethi Manor undetected and find such evidence, if it exists. I am to take any evidence back to Rantela Irenam.
11		To gain entry to the Odrethi Manor I have been given a powerful potion of shadow, that was brewed by Rantela Irenam. She told me that it will allow me access to the manor but may not last long enough for me to find what I am looking for. I was told it is my responsibility to find a solution to this problem. She told me to be quiet and warned me about wearing boots while performing this task, as it is necessary that the theft go undetected for some hours.
15		I have found a report in the Odrethi Manor which details the activities of the Odrethi houshold and seems to have been penned by Redram Oran.
20		My movements were detected by a member of the Odrethi houshold; I must have made too much noise while moving around.

Intrigue in Port Telvannis (TR_m1_PT_MaI_4)
10		I have spoken with Inera Ilneram about avenging the death of Redram Oran. She has devised a plan to implicate Varrac and Tinera Odrethi as Imperial spies. I have been given a message that has been poorly ciphered in a known Imperial code. I am to plant this message on the slave in the Odrethi Manor, after putting him under a command spell. Then I should order the slave to go to the docks to seek passage to Firewatch; afterward, I should alert the guards to the slave's intentions.
11		I have told Varrac and Tinera Odrethi of the plot to implicate them both as spies for the Empire. They have asked that I betray Rantela Irenam instead by performing the deed on her slave.

The slave was tortured and put to death, though he proclaimed his innocence.
