Formulas for: Warmth (a rate of cooling) & Cold (a temperature)[edit]

If I am reading things correctly, "Warmth" is a rate of cooling/warming and depends on

  • 1. the exterior micro climate's nature (out in the snow, beside a fire, holding a torch, immersed in ice water),
  • 2. the insulating qualities of the clothing (shown on its menu display),
  • 3. any racial bonus or handicap for insulation, and
  • 4. the effects of "Hot" food (at some magnitude for a given time.)

So is there a formula that gives cold increase/loss in temperature units per unit time?

"Cold" has the states of Warm, Comfortable, Chilly, Very Chilly, Freezing and Numb that seem to be directly related to a temperature scale, the progress upon which is assessed by the hypothetical formula from above. So is there such a numerical scale?

I ask because on so many issues we have been able to arrive at formulas (even imperfect ones like bartering) and because it would be helpful to know just how important is it to have good insulating clothing vs great insulating clothing? Is there a cap, like with armor? Is it just a small difference say between 29 seconds in one case and 30 seconds in another for each state change in X micro climate?

I did some experimenting this afternoon and explored the console command by help command searching 'survival' and 'cold' and like terms. I found a value called 'Survival_ColdNeedValue' that has the range of values, much like fatigue and hunger, that determine the level of cold the player will feel and also how much health will be lost, at least at the maximum value of each range (299, 499, etc.)
0-49: Warm
50-119: Comfortable
120-299: Chilly
300-499: Very Cold
500-799: Freezing
800-999:Numb
1000 will reduce the player's maximum health to zero, resulting in instant death.
This is the value that is reduced instantly by consuming hot cooked foods like soups. For example, a player who is 'very cold' eats a soup restoring 200 points of cold. That player would be in the 'chilly' range, or the lower end of 'comfortable' if the player had not been 'very cold' for long.
As for armor, I believe that 'warm' armor has double the warmth value of the same kind of armor with a standard warmth value, doubling the resistance to cold. The values for standard and warm were .05 and .1, respectively. Holding a torch adds a resistance of 25. I have no clue how all of this is calculated into the rate at which cold increases. I can try to get more information, but using that term might give more insight to people who better know the different values and attributes and variables. JC39xz (talk) 23:26, 6 March 2022 (UTC)
I have also found that the reduction in maximum health is linear, at a rate of .088% per one point of Cold. In each phase of cold weather, the maximum health will stop decreasing as will Cold value, resulting in the following limits of health reduction.
Chilly - 79.6% of max health
Very Cold - 56.9% of max health
Freezing - 22.8% of max health
Numb - 0%, will result in death
The main exception to these would be if swimming in freezing water, which automatically leads to the next phase of Cold in addition to the damage dealt to the player. For example, in chilly weather, a player's Cold value will not go above 299 and their max health will not be reduced below 79.6%, unless the player swims in freezing water, at which time they would become very cold. I believe taking significant amounts of frost damage could also be an exception to this rule as well. I have not confirmed it though. JC39xz (talk) 12:08, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Some minor research of mine about the highest possible warmth rating as shown in the inventory:
1) 54 from chest piece of armor.
2) 29 from head piece or armor.
3) 24 from feet.
4) 24 from hands.
5) 25 Nords racial bonus. They have the highest racial bonus to it of all races.
6) 50 when holding a torch.
7) 25 temporarily from a hot soup.

Regarding Nintendo Switch crash upon reaching "freezing" status - seems to be solved[edit]

With the patch 1.1.177.3285177 - I got that one today (Europe) - the crash is gone. Before that (version 1.1.143.3229919) I had it crash every time when reaching freezing status. Today I made several tests being a Nord and also being a Bosmer in werewolf form and every time I reached numb status without the game crashing. I did also some down-up cycles with hot soups going from warm to numb and up again to warm - no crash. But as said, it's a very short testing period, hence I wanted to make a note instead of a change on the page. By the way, also the frame rate issue in Riften and some other towns/villages seems to be gone. --84.190.98.22 16:56, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
