Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
There are two locations to start the quest: the Sacellum of Boethiah and the College of Winterhold.
At the Sacellum of Boethiah in the fenced-in fighting area, you will find Eranya, an imperial researcher investigating the legendary Goldbrand. She isn't very eager to tell you the location of it, on account of being dead, but by reading her journal you will find out the katana rests in Sivdur's Respite.
Go to Sivdur's Respite, located to the north of Windhelm and you will be attacked by a few cultists of Boethiah, one of which will have a note detailing their ambitions. There is a gate with two pedestals on either side of it. Both pedestals have etched tablets. The left one states:
"I, Sivdur, warrior and defender of dragons, lie in rest here My amulet, the symbol of my valor Place it here so that I may have proof of my deeds in Sovngarde"
While the right one states:
"Forever my nemesis, Magrathi, high priest and slayer of my brother His skull, the symbol of his betrayal Place it here, away from his kinsman, so that he may never find peace"
On a table to the right of the pedestals lie Eranya's Notes on Sivdur's Tomb, which will tell you that her research notes were left at the Arcanaeum at the College of Winterhold.
Go there and you will find Eranya's Research Notes located on the floor to the right of Urag gro-Shub's desk among some other books.
Alternatively, you can go straight to the Arcanaeum at the College of Winterhold (or go there after reading Eranya's journal) and read the copy of Eranya's Research Notes.
Once you've read Eranya's Research Notes, you will be attacked by two invisible Boethiah Cultists. Each of them will have a potion of invisibility.
You will then need to find two artifacts to complete the quest: Sivdur's Amulet and Magrathi's Skull. They can be found in any order.
Acquiring Sivdur's Amulet[edit]
Visit Whiterun and convince Lars Battle-Born to give you Sivdur's amulet:
- I heard your dad gave you a very old, special amulet. Is that true?
- "Ahh... yeah."
- I need it. Would you give it to me?
- "Go away."
Option | Dialogue | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
Hand over the amulet, or you won't like what comes next. (Intimidate) |
Passed: "Don't hurt me! You win." | |||
I was going to use it to find a magic sword. Isn't that exciting? (Persuade) |
Passed: "How can I argue with that?" | |||
Would a few shiny septims change your mind? (Bribe) |
Passed: "For that price? Sure." |
Acquiring Magrathi's Skull[edit]
Magrathi's Skull is a little bit more complicated than the amulet.
Travel to Ivarstead and enter Shroud Hearth Barrow. If you have not cleared out the barrow beforehand, to the right of you, behind a gate, will be a ghost. That ghost is not related to this quest and you do not have to deal with him, but what self-respecting adventurer would pass up a chance for fame, riches and a word wall?
Magrathi will in the claw door chamber, past several traps, a copy of the Illusion skill book Before the Ages of Man and the ghost, and, unlike Lars Battle-Born will be reticent in giving you what you seek. He is a maskless Dragon Priest and will be just as powerful as any of the others no matter your level, so make sure you are prepared for the difficult fight ahead. After defeating him make sure to take his skull.
Sivdur's Respite[edit]
You will now need to head back to Sivdur's Respite. Place Sivdur's amulet on the pedestal to the left of the door and Magrathi's skull on the pedestal to the right of the door in order to proceed.
The dungeon has some leveled draugr enemies and loot, but it is all of little note except for Sivdur's Tomb, where you will find Goldbrand on a pedestal and a chest near the entrance. When you pick up Goldbrand, two Honor Guards of Sivdur will get out of their sarcophagi, so be ready to fight them or run away; killing them is not necessary for the completion of the quest.
Notes[edit]
- Reading Eranya's Journal at Sivdur's Respite will initiate the miscellaneous journal entry to visit the College of Winterhold if you have not previously been told to visit the College before.
- It is not possible to fail the speech checks for aquiring Sivdur's Amulet from Lars Battle-Born. If the player does not have enough gold to bribe him the option to do so will not appear in dialogue.
- If this quest is done concurrently with investigating Shroud Hearth Barrow, you will be dealing with a Dragon Priest in the first zone on top of the insane mage Wyndelius Gatharian before you can even reach the claw door and the Word of Power within.
- Killing Wyndelius Gatharian, before speaking to the giver of the related quest, will close the entry gate to and prevent you from completing A Matter of Pride.[verification needed — see talk page]
Bugs[edit]
- It appears that the Boethiah Cultists will respawn in the Arcanaeum whenever the cell resets. From there, they stalk you wherever you go, and they can appear anywhere, including inside player homes. They only follow at walking speed, so having them catch up to you may be fairly infrequent and appear to be arbitrary.
- The Official Skyrim Special Edition Patch, version 1.6.629.0, fixes this bug.
- Entering Sivdur's Respite before starting the quest may set the quest to Stage 400 and prevent the quest from starting normally. ?
This can be fixed by using the console command
resetquest ccBGSSSE005_MainQuest
to reset the quest.
