Track down Lyris Titanborn in the Reach

Lyris Titanborn requested my assistance. She found something at the Reachwind Ritual Site and needs help solving a problem.

Detailed Walkthrough

Scout Fulgof calls for you in Markarth. He says Lyris Titanborn has a favor to ask of you, and that she wants you to meet her near the Reachwind Ritual Site.

The meeting spot is located along the side of the road east of the ritual site, which itself can be found be exiting Markarth and taking the road leading south. You won't exactly find what you're looking for: instead, you're met by an Orc named Gorgrath surrounded by the corpses of Gray Host vampires.

Gorgrath: "Easy, friend! I'm not your enemy!"

Have a chat with him: maybe he can tell you what happened here.

"I'm not one of those monsters! And I didn't kill this one. It was the blond giant and her companion!"

Blond giant? Do you mean Lyris Titanborn?

"Lyris? Yes, I think that's what her companion called her. They saved us!
We were prisoners of Gray Host vampires. Bound for the blood pens, I'm sure! Then that armored giant—Lyris, you say?—she strolled into camp and demanded they free us."

Then what happened?

"To be perfectly honest, I had my eyes closed through most of it.
There was a lot of shouting and cursing. Threats were made. I heard the blond giant laugh. Then I heard a great swoosh. Lots of them. Must have been her axe. And her companion's sword."

So Lyris and her companion killed all the vampires?

"Every last one of them! They found something on the leader, though. A letter, I think. It got her companion all excited. They mentioned Valthume and departed without another word.
So I stuck around to see if I could find anything else of value."

All right, I'll see if I can find Lyris at Valthume.

Gorgrath was apparently imprisoned by these vampires, only to be saved by Lyris and her bearded companion. He tells you the pair can probably be found at Valthume, a Nord ruin located east of here. Head north until you hit the main road, then follow it east until you reach the blue-flame brazier. Take a sharp right turn and begin climbing the steep hill, following the dirt road: this will take you to your destination. Be wary of the sabre cats on the side of the road.

When you arrive, you'll find a woman in rags standing over the corpse of yet another Gray Host vampire. Talk to her.

"Damned vampires. At least that fine Redguard and his blond giant knew how to deal with them."

Blond giant? So you saw Lyris Titanborn?

"Yes, that's what the handsome Redguard called her. They came out of nowhere and saved my clan from those Gray Host bastards.
As grateful as I am, I don't think saving us was their primary purpose. They took down the vampire leader and searched her."

Do you know what they were looking for?

"Not exactly, but they found a letter she was carrying. I'm not one of those Imperialized Reachfolk, so I wouldn't have been able to read it if I tried.
It must have been important, though, because the blond giant started asking me questions."

What kind of questions?

"She wanted to know about Reach history. Now, I'm not one to offer a drowning Nord a branch, but they did just save my clan. So I suggested she find a vateshran at Hroldan Ring.
If you're looking for the Redguard and his giant, check there."

I'll look for Lyris at Hroldan Ring.

You've missed them yet again, but at least you've got another lead. At least Lyris and her companion are doing good work while they skip on ahead of you. Hroldan Ring is directly north of your location, across the river. You'll find Lyris amid the Nord ruins. Talk to her and see what she wants.

"Welcome, partner. I take it you got my message?"

Scout Fulgof sent me to help. He said you were looking into a problem.

"Problem? More like an opportunity. And it all has to do with these letters we found on the Gray Host leaders at the Reachwind Ritual Site and Valthume."

We? Is this the handsome Redguard with the impressive beard people have been talking about?

"Well, I can't argue with that description. Sai Sahan is certainly all those things and more.
We were on our way to Markarth to meet Svana when we decided to help out the locals with their Gray Host problem. That's when we found the letters."

What's so important about these letters?

"Maybe nothing. But for Sai, maybe everything.
We think there's a third letter out there. Sai's in Gloomreach, trying to acquire it. Go help him while I finish here. I'm hoping to talk to one of the Reach lorekeepers, a vateshran. If I can find one."

I'll go to Gloomreach and help Sai Sahan find that third letter.

Lyris and Sai Sahan found some interesting letters on the bodies of Gray Host leaders, and now Sai is looking for something. She refuses to elaborate on what it is, but asks that you help him out in Gloomreach while she tracks down a Reach storyteller.

Head down the road east towards the Lost Valley Wayshrine and move south to cross the bridge over the river. Walk a short ways west, and you'll find the entrance to the delve. Gloomreach is a web of tunnels, but the path forward is fairly straightforward. From the Reach-side entrance, follow the path until you reach the first chamber, then turn left to take the northern tunnel. At the fork in the road, take the right-side path: there's a dead end on the left. You'll pass some Falmer huts, a waterfall, and a shallow pool of water. There's a fork in the road just ahead marked with the presence of a single hut: take that right turn (southbound), and you'll wind up in a large cavern.

A Gray Host Vampire will spawn in this chamber: defeat him and make your way into the corridor located in the northwest corner of the room, which is pretty well hidden in plain sight, to find the Concealed Chamber. Head on through the door. Inside, you'll find a dead vampire next to a Gray Host Coffer: open the coffer to retrieve the Gray Host Commander's Communique. Just then, Sai Sahan walks through the door. Show him what you've found.

"It warms my heart to see you again, my friend. I take it you came at Lyris's behest?
Now tell me, did you happen to find a letter in that coffer?"

Lyris said to look for a letter dealing with Rada al-Saran and a Reach hero. I think this is it.

"Let me have a look. Yes, this is what I was seeking. The third letter between the vampire leaders. But I was afraid of this. They don't tell the complete story."

Lyris mentioned this had a connection to your martial traditions, but she wouldn't explain further.

"That's my Snow Lily. She would never betray my confidence, not even to a trusted partner such as yourself.
I, however, will share what I know. I can't expect you to help if you don't know what's involved."

So, what do Rada al-Saran and a Reach hero have to do with Redguard traditions?

"Before becoming a vampire, Rada al-Saran was a Redguard swordmaster who once battled Leki to a standstill.
According to the letters, he lost his ability to manifest a Shehai, his spirit sword. Then he met the Reach hero, Faolan the Red Eagle."

What does a Reach hero know about Redguard traditions?

"That's what I was hoping to learn, but the letters fail to provide any detail.
I, too, have never been able to manifest my Shehai. I was hoping to gain insight from these letters. It seems we'll have to look elsewhere, though."

Do you have any idea where we can learn more about this connection to Red Eagle?

"Lyris went to Hroldan Ring to talk to a vateshran—a Reach lorekeeper—to find a local version of this story.
I suggest we go to the source. A sacred site dedicated to Faolan—Red Eagle Redoubt. Look for a vateshran and I'll meet you there."

Render the ancient monoliths legible

Your next task is to travel to Red Eagle Redoubt, which is located south of the Four Skull Lookout world boss site and northeast of Rebel's Retreat. Make your way to the nearest wayshrine and travel to the Rebel's Retreat Wayshrine. From there, travel north along the riverbank, cross the bridge, and head northbound up the hill until you reach the redoubt. You'll find Vateshran Ovra by the cooking fire: talk to her. Her initial reaction to you depends on whether or not you're a Nord.

Do you know the story of Faolan Red Eagle and Rada al-Saran?

"That is a rare and ancient tale. One not often spoken of, let alone shared with those from beyond the clans.
Tell me, outsider. Why does this story matter to you?"

Lyris Titanborn and Sai Sahan need to hear this story. It may have significance for them.

"Tisfira has told all who will listen about the handsome Redguard and the blond giant who walks at his side. About what they did for her clan.
Very well. What specifically about the tale interests you and your friends?"

How did Red Eagle help Rada al-Saran recover his Spirit Sword?

"Ah, yes. Red Eagle was great warrior as well as a great teacher.
All I can tell you is that an ancient cave sits below this sacred redoubt. If this particular song is meant for you and your friends, you will find the answers you seek there."

We'll investigate this cave.

The information Sai seeks is down in the cave below this redoubt. Lyris and Sai approach just as you finish your conversation with the vateshran. Talk to Lyris and fill her in on what the vateshran told you. Then enter the sacred cave near the cooking fire.

Once you're in, you'll need to talk to Lyris again.

"The vateshran was willing to open up a bit more. Must have been my shining personality.
She suggested that we'd find something important in this cave, but that we might have to work to uncover it."

What do you mean, work?

"The vateshran explained that the Reachfolk have a story concerning Red Eagle and a fallen Sword Saint. How they met in this cave to exchange knowledge.
Since that time, the cave has been left alone. Who knows what's beneath all the undergrowth?"

So what do we do?

"You clear the undergrowth. Sai and I will be ready to react to whatever we find."

All right. Stay close.

Verse by verse, Red Eagle's song is sung

Your job is to burn away the foliage covering the monoliths so Lyris and Sai can have a look at them. They determine that each stone has a verse from a song written upon it. There are four stones which Lyris and Sai take it in turns to read the verses off of:

Reach out, Red Eagle, your destiny awaits

Clear your mind, Red Eagle, don't surrender to the fates

Fill your heart with the song that makes it roar

and let your spirit, your love, and your life, let it soar

Then it will come to you, your love, your life, your sword

After the final verse is recited, you'll need to speak to Lyris. The song suggests that one must clear their mind: fill their heart with the one thing they love most in the world, above all else. For Red Eagle, it was his people: for Rada al-Saran, the Gray Host. Sai needs to decide what he truly wants in life. She asks that you wait for them outside, give them some time alone together.

Exit the cave and wait over by the cooking fire. Lyris and Sai will emerge in due time: once they arrive, have a chat with Lyris. She rewards you for your part in Sai's journey.

"Ancient legends, old songs … it's all up to Sai now."

So did you and Sai reach any conclusions? Does he know how to summon his spirit sword?

"The Shehai … it's a sacred and private thing to a Redguard. I tried to help Sai. Told him what I thought. What happens next? That's up to him.
Thanks for your help, partner. If we're keeping score, I owe you. A lot. Now I need to talk to Sai."

This ends the quest, but the story isn't over: stick around for their conversation.

Lyris Titanborn: "I think I understand, Sai. You need to put aside your duty, just this once, and focus on what you want."

Sai Sahan: "Duty isn't easily set aside for someone like me, Snow Lily."

Lyris Titanborn: "Focus, Sai. Just this once, fill your heart with what you need."

With that, they both begin to sing.

Lyris Titanborn: "Reach out, Red Eagle, your destiny awaits …."

Sai Sahan: "Clear your mind, Red Eagle, don't surrender to the fates …."

Lyris Titanborn: "Fill your heart with the thing that makes it roar …."

Sai Sahan: "And let your spirit, your love, and your life, let it soar …."

Lyris Titanborn: "Then it will come to you, your love, your life, your sword …."

"Focus, Sai. Just this once, fill your heart with what you need."

"Sai! Your sword! It's working!"

Shehai Sahan

"Sai! That's amazing!"

"There's a song in my heart and life is good!"

Sai holds his hands in front of him, and his Shehai manifests in a show of brilliant white light.

Lyris Titanborn: "Sai! Your sword! It's working!"

Lyris Titanborn: "Sai! That's amazing!"

Sai Sahan: "The words, they led me to the true answer. The one thing I have always loved above all else."

Lyris Titanborn: "And what was that, Sai?"

Sai Sahan: "I thought of you, Snow Lily. I thought of you."
