Approaching him if you haven't started the quest yet:

"I call upon the powers!"

Speaking to him:

"Please don't bother me. This warding spell is quite complex, and if I don't finish it soon, there will be nothing to stop the impending invasion."
What invasion?
"You see the spriggans? The lurchers? They're here because they feel something coming. A terrible force. Daedra.
I am the last priest of the Wooded Eye. We were charged with protecting this grove, but the wards have failed. We have failed."
Why did the wards fail?
"Intruders! Greedy for power. Broke the wards and attacked my fellow priests. I can't defend against the coming Daedric invasion alone. I need your help restoring the wardstones while I complete the warding spell, or Daedra will overrun this place."
I'll take care of the wardstones.

If you started the quest from Fongoth:

"Please don't bother me. This warding spell is quite complex, and if I don't finish it soon, there will be nothing to stop the impending invasion."

Where are the wardstones?
"They're on the high ground surrounding the grove. There are three of them.
Please, hurry. We've not much time."
I'll see what I can do.

Asking further questions:

"The wardstones surround the grove. They are powered by magicka."
Who are you?
"I'm a priest of the Wooded Eye. The last priest, from the look of things. Can't say I'm happy about it."
How did this grove get here?
"Get here? It's always been here. How to explain? It exists, but to most people it blends seamlessly into the forest. You can't see it, unless you are woven into the wards—or you figure out a way to break them."
What will restoring the wards do?
"It'll make this grove once again invisible to all except those who know where to look, or who are woven into the warding."
Who were the intruders you mentioned?
"Oof, them. One of them looked like he'd seen … livelier days. The other just looked shifty. Both Altmer, I think."

As you restore the second wardstone, you'll hear:

Orthenir: "We're out of time! The Daedra have broken out of Ilmyris!"

Before you fight the summoned Watcher:

"Walk carefully, you tread on sacred ground."

After restoring all three wardstones and completing the ritual:

"Too close! They nearly had us that time. The wards will keep the Daedra bound, for now, but I'm still not sure how they managed to break them. We need to investigate Ilmyris."
Ilmyris?
"Ah, yes. Perhaps I wasn't exactly forthright. This grove exists to conceal the Cradle of Ilmyris, a library of … secret knowledge. The Wooded Eye are its guardians. We serve the Woodland Man. You might know him as Herma-Mora."
Herma-Mora?
"Yes. A Daedric Prince. But the only reason the Daedra are bound here is to keep this place hidden. Ordinarily, they pose no threat.
They broke their bonds when the intruders destroyed the wards, and now they threaten all of Greenshade!"
How do we re-bind them?

Asking him about how to secure the grove:

"I do not know the mechanism myself. But Saromir—the caretaker of the Vault of Memories inside the Cradle of Ilmyris—he'd know. If he's still alive."
You serve a Daedric Prince? / You're a Daedric cultist?
"Yeah, well, this crisis transcends religious differences, don't you think? I want to secure the grove, you don't want Greenshade to be destroyed. Binding the Daedra is good for both of us."
How will binding the Daedra help secure the grove?
"The spirits of Daedra supply magicka to the wards. It's all very complicated.
The important thing is that you find Saromir and learn how to bind the Daedra permanently."

Speaking to him again:

"I took the liberty of weaving you into the ward so you can find the grove again."

If you sacrificed Saromir, sparing Orthenir, he becomes the new caretaker and you can talk to him after the quest:

"You made it out of Ilmyris alive? How … unexpected."
The Daedra are sealed.
"And here I am. The last sane one standing. Hurrah, I suppose.
No doubt you and my lord had a good laugh about that. Not that I've ever heard him laugh. Or would want to."
What will you do now?
"Replenish the warding ritual. Amuse myself by playing tricks on the babbling fools in Ilmyris. I suppose I'll have the time now."
