Lord Alain Diel

Lord Alain Diel is a Breton noble from Daggerfall found at Shrieking Scar. He has hired The Daggers to deal with the harpies who have been plaguing the city. It is revealed that Lord Diel is responsible for riling the harpies up, as he plans to extend the Daggerfall docks after driving the harpies off.

Depending on your choice during the related quest, you may either extort money from Diel or watch him be killed by a harpy.

Quest-Related Events

As you apporach him before starting the quest, he will confidently boast "Come to help the great Lord Diel, have you?" Speak to Diel in his tent southwest of Chill House. He asks you to go find the missing members of the Daggers:

"Ah, another one. Here to work with the great Lord Diel, no doubt.
I'm renowned throughout Glenumbra, you know."

Never heard of you.

"Well, there's no excuse for that! You've certainly heard about the harpy menace that threatens Daggerfall? Of course you have.
My sons and I are here to put an end to that threat. I know you want to help. Start by finding my stupid hirelings."

Hirelings? What hirelings?

"The Daggers! They're out gathering … information … about the harpies. Know your enemy and all that.
You'll get paid once I have enough to … um … complete my research. Take this Dagger with you. He knows what to do."

All right, but …?

Whether you continue talking to Diel after he's given you the quest, or if you started the quest with his son, Leonce Diel, he'll say:

"Off with you now. Bumnog will help you. Interesting fellow. Always fights fair. Refuses to use weapons against the harpies. Just his fists.
Can't imagine that that works out for him, but he's the only Dagger still here, so what do I know?"

What are these Daggers you keep mentioning?

"Who, not what. The Daggers. A mercenary group out of Daggerfall. They're highly trained and extremely deadly. Or so they tell me. They're also lost!
But they do work cheap, which makes them perfect for my purposes."

What do you mean they're lost?

"They left hours ago and we haven't heard a word since. Only Bumnog returned, which is why he's available to help you.
Why are you still here? Get out there and find the missing Daggers!"

So what do you want me to do?/Explain what you want me to do again.'

"Why do I have to explain these things to you? Just talk to Bumnog. He knows what I hired the Daggers to do.
Now stop pestering me and let me enjoy all this nature that my sons keep going on about."

Finish the tasks and return to camp to find Lord Diel being rebuked by Granette Feldrin as he stands over four bound harpies:

Granette Feldrin: "You can't keep them like this, Lord Diel. They're in pain!"

Lord Alain Diel: "I can do what I like with them. After all, I'm the one investigating why these birdies have become so very, very angry."

Granette Feldrin: "Argh! When Gelvin gets back, he won't stand for this!"

Speak to him and he'll say:

"Ah, you're back. Much more reliable than those damn Daggers. I don't see their leader, Gelvin. He didn't come back with you? More gold for the rest of you, I suppose.
Now, hand over the eggs, please."

Here are the eggs, but Gelvin hasn't returned yet?

"I believe we already covered that. Now let me have a look at these beauties.
Ah, so round and smooth. Well, oval, really. I'll begin studying these eggs right a … wait a moment."

What's the matter?

"Where's the other egg? I was promised five harpy eggs, not four. Didn't they teach you to count?
There will be no deal without five eggs! Five! No more, no less. Imbeciles!"

Gelvin has the fifth egg.

"Then I suggest you find that bootless lout and get it back. There will be consequences. These are my eggs!
Let his sister know that if Gelvin doesn't return, I will have his right hand cut off for stealing from a noble!"

As he walks back to his tent, he'll say:

"Dealing with fools and idealists makes me thirsty. I need a drink."

Speak to him again and he'll say:

"By the Eight, why the blazes are you still bothering me?
Go find that damn Gelvin and get me back my egg."

After speaking to Granette, he'll become even more impatient as he speaks to you through clenched jaws:

"I'm still waiting."

Go to Miltrin's Fishing Cabin and speak to Gelvin. Uncover Lord Diel's plot and decide if you are going to reveal Lord Diel's treachery or finish the job so The Daggers can get paid. Exit the cabin and the Breton will be waiting for you:

"Gelvin's sister gave up his location so easily. Now where is that damn thief?
And where in the Eight is my damn egg?"

Lord Diel is Exposed

A harpy approaches Lord Alain Diel from behind

You're not getting the harpy egg.

"What did you say? How dare you! That's my property! You expect to get away with this?
I knew I shouldn't have put my trust in a bunch of low-life scum. You'll be in the hands of the Daggerfall guard by the end of day!"

Or they could learn how this harpy threat really started.

"You think the guard would believe you? Some street rats who lay a claim against a well-respected noble? You're dumber than you look. The guard will chuckle as they lead you to the dungeons.
Or maybe we'll just end this right now."

If you have helped King Casimir previously you can say:

Actually, King Casimir and I are good friends.

"You? Friends with the King? Oh, that's brilliant. Really, it is. You must dine with his family on a regular basis? Perhaps vacation together in the countryside?
I'll give him your regards. It's a shame about your tragic accident and all. Guards!"

Otherwise, noticing one of the harpies has gotten loose and is right behind his lordship, you can say:

I wouldn't do that if I were you.

"What impertinence! You really do get under my skin. Enough of this. No one will miss you or those street rats.
Guards! Deal with these thieves!"

Either way, Diel will try to call for help before the harpy takes him down:

Lord Alain Diel: "Guards! What in the Divine's name are you … oh no!"

The Daggers Get Paid

If you let Lord Diel get away with his scheme, everyone will be on the docks outside Miltrin's Fishing Cabin:

"I do hope you have both the thief and the egg with you. For everyone's sake."

I have the egg. Gelvin will be here in a moment.

"Ah, yes, yes! This one's shell shines even brighter than the others.
My, um, study of this specimen will surely guarantee our success in stopping the harpy frenzy."

You can drop the act. We know what you're up to.

"If you think to try to slander me, worm, good luck with that. I put gold in the pockets of the highest-ranking guards in the city. No one will believe you."

We have evidence. There was no threat before you started it.

"You … what are you … oh, bother!
Very well, tell me what you want."

Increase the Daggers payment and our lips are sealed.

"Fine, fine! You have a deal. I hope you choke on it.
Now tell that damn Gelvin to come out so we can finish our preparations."

Increase my payment and you have my silence.

"Fine, fine! You have a deal. I hope you choke on it.

Gelvin will come down the dock to where you and Lord Diel are standing:

Lord Alain Diel: "Your Daggers have done a good job, Gelvin. Even if you did … lose your way for a bit. Still, you've earned your pay."

Gelvin Feldrin: "I'm happy that we were able to help, my lord. This gold will be a big help to the Daggers."

Lord Alain Diel: "Next time I need assistance, I shall call upon the Daggers again. Now—You, on the boat! Be careful with that!"

Gelvin walks back up the dock:

Bumnog: "You did the right thing, old friend. Don't beat yourself up over it."

Gelvin Feldrin: "I hope you're right, Bumnog. I hope you're right."

After the deal is done:

"I need to get these goods shipped to Daggerfall right away. So please, just leave me alone.
No offense, but our business is finished and I want nothing more to do with you."
