Speaking to him to start the quest:

"Oh, thank Y'ffre you're not one of the Wood Orcs, and you're not one of the strange people in that cave."

Strange people in the cave?

"This has been the worst day, let me tell you. I went to get some firewood for my master's camp, but the Orcs chased me over here. I tried to retreat into the cave, but now there's a whole village in there!
It was empty just last week!"

I overheard the villagers talking about a caretaker, and a tree. Maybe you could find this tree and discover what they want? I hope they're not invaders. It's much too freakish for my blood."

After speaking to Laniriel, he will be back with Lataryon at the northern entrance:

"The sooner we can get out of this place, the better. I can't take much more of this kind of magical nonsense."
