Investigate the murders of a Rift farming family. Zone: The Rift Objective: Frostmoon Farmstead — Solve the murders at Frostmoon Farmstead. Quest Giver: Sergeant Jorald Location(s): Frostmoon Farmstead Reward: Lamellar War Belt Average Leveled Gold XP Gain: 3020 XP

Frostmoon Farmstead has been attacked, resulting in several grisly murders. Sergeant Jorald needs help uncovering the killer or killers.

Detailed Walkthrough

Entering Frostmoon Farmstead from Riften, you'll notice a Nord sergeant comforting a crying woman. Speak to Sergeant Jorald to pick up the quest.

"Stop right there. I've got three murders and a heartbroken girl to deal with here. I don't need any more complications."

Anything I can do?

"You're not the killer, I suppose; that would be too easy. But I don't want to leave Raerana alone while I search for clues. The killer might still be around."

I could take a look around.

Raerana doesn't have much information, as she was away when the attack happened. You'll need to start searching for clues. You can find the body of Raerana's father near the cart at the back of the farm, and the body of the farmhand is on the mill's balcony. Both were victims of a vicious attack. Your next objective is to search the farmhouse, where the quest marker will point you to a stack of books on the shelf. Searching here, you will find a folded letter addressed to Raerana, signed by a man named Rilyn.

Finally, search the rest of the farmhouse, where you'll also find the body of Raerana's mother, and her parents' journals. Eislef's Journal indicates he was a heavy drinker who controlled his wife and daughter and hated the Dark Elf who kept coming to call on Raerana. Frirhild's Journal suggests that she was using skooma. Additionally, Eislef would get violent with his daughter, but Frirhild couldn't protect her.

Return to Raerana to discuss what you've seen. She admits her father was an angry drunk and that her mother was a user, but she still didn't want it to end like this. When you ask about Rilyn, she begs you to find him.

I found this letter addressed to you. Who's Rilyn?

"My letter? How did you ….
Oh, what does it matter? Please, just find Rilyn. I need him here."

Where do you meet?

"There's a cave, to the southwest. We were supposed to meet there tonight. Bring him back to me, I beg you."

Follow the quest marker southeast to the small cave, where you can find a bedroll and another journal. Reading it suggests that Rilyn loved Raerana and wanted to free her from her abusive parents, but he started to get jealous when Raerana's father hired the new farmhand. He eventually flew into a rage and killed them all. Take the evidence back to the sergeant, but Rilyn himself will appear as you leave the cave. He is unapologetic and insists he did it for Raerana's own good.

"What are you doing here? Who are you?"

I'm a friend of Raerana's. And I know what you've done.

"And do you know why I had to do it? Do you know what her father did to her? If you're truly Raerana's friend, you'll keep what you know to yourself. She needs me now. I'm all she has."

You expect me to just walk away?

"You could help instead. Give Raerana some closure, and steer suspicion away from me.
I have an idea, if you're open to it, if you truly care about Raerana."

You have a choice here — you can let Rilyn get away with it or report him.

Working with Rilyn

Take the ring back to Jorald and tell him that you found it on some bandits. He will have buried the bodies and will accept the quest as complete.

Confronting Rilyn

If you refuse to work with Rilyn, he'll take matters into his own hands. Follow him to the farmhouse, where he will tell Raerana what he did. She is appalled and runs into the farmhouse and Rilyn will follow her. Follow him inside and Raerana will run back outside yelling to stay away from her. Kill Rilyn. Note that he won't be aggressive until you attack. After he's dead, go back outside and talk to Raerana.

Raerana and Jorald will then go to the Withered Tree in Riften, where you'll be able to get your reward from her uncle Wilrek.
