Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

Meet Shaman Ulvoch with Apprentice Fialyn

As you approach Karthwasten from the wayshrine, you'll see Apprentice Fialyn gazing into the distance, muttering about a storm. Speak with her and find out what's troubling her.

"Outsider, you approach Fialyn, apprentice shaman of the Crow-Eye clan. That cursed storm may have disrupted our wards, but make no mistake—this is still Reach land, defended by brave Reachfolk.
We will not give up without a fight."
I'm not here to fight. Tell me about this storm.
"It was horrible. I've never seen anything like it. A roiling mass of black and crimson. It exploded right above Karthwasten. When it hit my village, people changed. They turned … feral.
Ancestors guide me, but I don't know what to do."
You said the storm disrupted your wards?
"Wards blessed by the spirits that protect our village. The wards stopped the worst of the storm, but they must be restored. I tried to reach them, but the wilderness has become too dangerous.
I prayed for help. Did the spirits send you to aid me?"
I don't know about the spirits, but I'll help you if I can.

A harrowstorm has hit Karthwasten. The wards in the village staved off the brunt of the damage, but they were disrupted, and many citizens were harrowed. Fialyn needs to take you to her master, Shaman Ulvoch, so you can receive his blessing in order to help.

Head up the path into the village, which is shrouded in a thick red haze. Ascend the wooden steps by the pole and speak with Apprentice Fialyn in front of the shaman's house. She explains that her people are distrustful of outsiders, and that your assistance will be more well-received if you have the shaman's approval. She tells you to hang back while she explains your presence to the shaman.

Collect Offerings for the Wards

With that out of the way, follow Fialyn into the shaman's house.

Apprentice Fialyn: "Shaman Ulvoch, I couldn't reach the wards, but I think this person can help us."
Shaman Ulvoch: "An outsider, I sense."
Apprentice Fialyn: "I believe the spirits sent them to us, master."
Shaman Ulvoch: "Do you? Wait outside, apprentice. I will speak to the outsider."

Talk to Shaman Ulvoch.

"Come, outsider, let me feel your spirit ….
I sense no deception. I think you may be able to help us. Since my apprentice trusts you, I will as well. The Crow-Eye clan needs aid. There are evils in this land that we cannot defeat on our own."
Apprentice Fialyn said she needed help restoring the village's wards.
"I was afraid she would run into trouble, but she's a good apprentice. One I find myself leaning on more and more since my sight left me and age has taken its toll.
There are four wards, each dedicated to one of our revered spirits."
How do we restore the wards?
"You must bring an offering of nature and earth to each of the wards.
The fallen branches of willow trees, for they represent the fragility of life. Rocks bathed in moonlight, for purity. And husks of the cicada, for they represent rebirth."
That sounds simple enough.
"Placing the offerings at the four wards isn't the hard part. Gathering them and dealing with whatever prowls our homeland is.
Keep each other safe and Apprentice Fialyn will guide you through the restoration process once you gather the offerings."
An Offering Accepted

You need to collect Willow Branches, Cicada Husks, and Moon-Touched Stones to offer during the ritual to appease the village's four patron Princes: Nocturnal, Hircine, Molag Bal, and Namira. All of these can be found northwest of Karthwasten. The willow branches are closest to the village: they lie just off the side of the road leading north out of the village. When you try to gather them, you'll be assaulted by two Harrowfiends. Death hounds and vampiric sabre cats can be seen feasting on corpses on the side of the road. Head further up the hill eastbound, curving around the bend to find the moon-touched stones atop an old Nord structure near a tower. The cicada husks are on a nearby cliff.

Once you've gathered the offerings, you're going to need to place them at the four wards situated around the perimeter of the village. The closest ward lies down the road northbound, back the way you came and past a cave: it's consecrated in Namira's name. Lay down the offerings, and Apprentice Fialyn requests her assistance.

Apprentice Fialyn: "Namira, spirit of decay and ancient darkness, accept our humble offering and protect our mortal souls."

The offering begins to glow: Namira seems to have taken note. The next ward lies across the way to the west. Instead of taking the road back down the hill towards the village, take a right turn on your descent. A lone Harrowfiend and several death hounds patrol this road. Follow the path until you've found Nocturnal's ward, then lay the offerings down.

Apprentice Fialyn: "Nocturnal, spirit of the night, accept this offering and send your crows to guard us."

Follow the path south until you reach Hircine's ward, and repeat the process.

Apprentice Fialyn: "Hircine, spirit of the hunt, accept this offering and make our bounty plentiful."
Return to Shaman Ulvoch at the Pyre

The final ward lies eastward, and is dedicated to Molag Bal. It's located just southwest of the shaman's house, so you should find yourself back in the village proper at the end of your journey. Set down the offering and make way for the shaman's apprentice.

Apprentice Fialyn: "Molag Bal, spirit of torment and trouble, accept this and teach us to endure the struggle."

With the offerings placed, you should make your way to the center of the village, where a pyre has been lit for the Ritual of Restoration. Speak with Shaman Ulvoch.

"I sense the outsider has returned. And I feel energy flowing through the land.
I suspect you and my apprentice were successful in your task. Am I correct in this assumption?"
We gathered the offerings and placed them at the wards.
"On behalf of the Crow-Eye clan, I thank you outsider. I can feel the energy flowing through the wards like water. Now I may perform the ritual and restore what the storm took from us.
But I require your help one last time, my friend."
What do you need me to do?
"Since you made the offerings, I must ask you to present yourself at the ritual pyre. The spirits began this negotiation with you, so you must complete it.
You are a part of Karthwasten now, and it is a part of you."
I'll present myself at the ritual pyre.
The Restoration Ritual fails

You presented the offerings to the Spirits, so you're part of this negotiation now. Present yourself at the ritual pyre and let the ceremony begin.

Shaman Ulvoch: "We are the land and the land is us. Spirits, accept our offering and restore our wards!"
Shaman Ulvoch: "Karthwasten belongs to the Reach!"
<Thick black smokes emerges from the wood pyre and the ground momentarily shakes.>
Shaman Ulvoch: "Something has gone wrong! Outsider, come speak to me!"

Talk to Ulvoch.

"I don't understand. The ritual … failed. I've never felt such darkness, such fury. How is this possible?"
Something went wrong with the restoration ritual.
"Yes, but I don't know why the ritual failed.
It was as if the spirits lashed out at us. Something disturbed the natural process, but I have no idea what that could be."
What can I do to help?
"Be my eyes, outsider. Examine the ritual pyre and see if anything strikes you as odd or out of place. I sense something … but I cannot put my finger on what it is.
If you find anything, show it to Apprentice Fialyn. She may be able to identify it."
I'll see what I can find.

Examine the ritual pyre. You'll find a Horrid Vine, Malformed Root, and Misshapen Tendril on the ground around it. Show them to Apprentice Fialyn. She identifies them as belonging to a plant that grows in caves beneath Karthwasten, but there's something off about them: it's as if they're corrupted. If you've played through Greymoor, you'll identify these botanical structures as a form of netherroot, a key component in the harrowstorm ritual.

The plant Fialyn is thinking of typically grows in Sanuarach Mine, originally excavated by foreign settlers before the Crow-Eye Clan reclaimed Karthwasten. The mine is abandoned, as the villagers have no use for it. From Shaman Ulvoch's position, head up the dirt road northwest leading behind the nearest house: Sanuarach Mine is dug into the side of the hill. Head on through the door and proceed with your investigation. Once inside, Fialyn immediately smells that something is off and urges caution.

Burn the corrupted plants in Sanuarach Mine

Head south through the first large chamber and climb the scaffolding to enter the southern tunnel. Once you reach the portion of the tunnel where light filters through the ceiling, Fialyn will stop you beside a netherroot specimen. Speak to her. The Gray Host can't have come into the mine from the surface: the villagers would have seen them. Fialyn surmises they've been using tunnels to reach the mine from elsewhere underground. Additionally, this plant seems to be the source of the corruption. If you've played through Greymoor, you can use your prior knowledge of the plant to inform her that the Gray Host uses netherroot to fuel their harrowstorms. She suggests that you burn all traces of the plant and destroy the support beams in the deepest section of the mine to collapse any tunnels the Gray Host may be using to infiltrate. With a plan in place, burn the nearby netherroot vine and push forward.

Head into the next room and climb up the wooden platform to reach the vines creeping up through the ceiling of the mine. Burn them and move down the tunnel ahead. As you push forward, the earth will rumble slightly. Make a left turn at the fork and descend the stairs or jump down off the broken platform to burn your next netherroot: there are vampires and werewolves in this pit. Head back up the stairs and traverse the northern tunnel to find your next netherroot. Climb up the stairs to the east and burn the root on the middle walkway.

Once the roots are done, jump off the platform and head through the western tunnel to start hacking away at support beams. One pillar is up a short ramp on the east side of the room. The second and third are accessible by ascending the scaffolding to the west. Pentarch Sevida guards the third unstable pillar on the central platform: kill her, destroy the pillar, then make your getaway through the door north of the second pillar. You'll end up on a ledge just north of town, not far from the shaman's house.

The protective wards are fully restored

Return to the ritual pyre and speak with Shaman Ulvoch. He asks you to present yourself before the ritual pyre once more. Do as he asks, and the ritual begins anew:

Shaman Ulvoch: "The corruption is gone and Karthwasten endures."
Shaman Ulvoch: "We ask the spirits to once more bless and defend our home."
<The pyre catches alight and green and purple lights can be seen in the sky.>
Shaman Ulvoch: "I feel power returning to the wards. The spirits stand with us once more!"

Talk to Apprentice Fialyn, who rewards you for helping her save the village:

"The ritual, it worked! The last remnants of the storm seem to be cleared away … the worst of it is finally behind us. And thanks to you, we have our natural defenses in place again.
Karthwasten is safe again."
Will the Crow-Eye clan recover from the effects of that unnatural storm?
"Now that our wards are back in place, I think so. We still need to deal with the remaining villagers who turned feral. But we collapsed part of the mine, so we shouldn't have any more trouble from that direction."
Do you still think the spirits sent me to help you?
"Oh, I'm more certain of that than ever! I asked for help and the spirits provided. The fact that they sent an outsider … that gives me and the clan something to think about.
Not everything outside this village is dark and dangerous, I suppose."
So Karthwasten is safe now?
"As safe as it can be. Here, my friend. This is for you. You may not be Crow-Eye by blood, but you are now connected to us and our land.
The spirits sent you for a reason. I'm just grateful you heard them and answered their call."
