A particular solution to freezing when casting spells/shooting arrows (etc.)

Personally, on my game, I had this issue where your game freezes when you cast a spell or try to shoot an arrow, but I waited (in-game) till the sun was up again (so it was like 8PM when I had issues but I waited until like 10 AM or so in-game) and suddenly I had no more problems casting spells or shooting arrows. I had tried Nightmare2013's fix and multiple other suggestions, but none worked until I just did this. Now maybe could someone also try this method to resolve this problem, and if it works for them too, just add it to the article please (this bug is already annoying enough, others might need this information IF it does help [or maybe add it right away anyone? I'm just not sure my workaround is relevant]).

CTD on load

I installed several mods, and tried to play a new save. When the loading bar after clicking "New" on the main menu gets to the end, it just quits to desktop, with no error messages (and the process ends). After having only Oblivion.esm loaded in OBMM, it still doesn't work. Radeon HD 5870, Phenom II x4 925 (2.8 GHz), 8GB RAM, Windows 7 x64, 1680x1050 w/HDR. Latest version of Oblivion and OBSE.

annoying problem needs resolving

Im playing the game on the xbox 360, and got into a fight with a bandit. I tried to mount shadowmere to escape, but the horse was hit by an arrow and knocked down as a result. When I got off the horse, I had a free flying camera in third person, and could even see my character lying on the floor. In first person, there was no problems.

Naturally, I decided to reload the save, but now I have no character in third person. Spell animations still work, but there is literally nothing else visible. Again, first person works fine. Any known solution, or is my save knackered?

Crash when entering market district

My game plays great however when I go there it crashes just as it finishes loading. It darkens like it's done but nothing happens. I updated my 360 and un-updated and still nothing.help me!

Prblem

Installed oblivion and it worked with no problems the due to virus concerns I reinstalled my OS (vista) now my computer stops responding when I try to install oblivion. I am confused as to why this would happen and solutions? — Unsigned comment by 124.171.100.130 (talk) at 00:38 on 12 August 2010

Right Stick issues with PC when using a controller. [Fix]

I've wen't through alot of trial and error for this, but I've managed to fix the right stick problem!

To fix this, you must go to My Documents>My Games>Oblivion and open Oblivion.ini. Scroll down to the control section and find this section of data:

iJoystickLookUpDown=6

iJoystickLookLeftRight=3

fJoystickLookUDMult=0.0020

fJoystickLookLRMult=0.0020

The line; fJoystickLookUDMult and LRMult, controls the sensitivity of the right stick. To fix this, simply change the number. I find this setting works best:

iJoystickLookUpDown=6

iJoystickLookLeftRight=3

fJoystickLookUDMult=0.3000 <--increase from .0020 to .3000

fJoystickLookLRMult=0.3000 <--Same as above.

Enjoy! And don't forget to give me props! -Phantom93360

Right stick with Logitech Dual Action gamepad [Fixes]

I am playing Oblion GOTY edition successfully under Windows 7 with a Logitech Dual Action gamepad. The above settings from Phantom93360 were helpful, but I found some additional tweaks to share:

  • Get the latest drivers from Logitech's web site, as they work much better than the version on the mini-CD that ships with the gamepad.
  • A MUCH SIMPLER FIX: Find your oblivion.ini in your Documents/My Games/Oblivion/Oblivion.ini. Search for the line: ";X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3, XRot = 4, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6" and change it to ";X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 5, XRot = 6, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6". Much easier and actually worked for me, unlike what is below. :P
  • Run the Logitech "Profiler" application and map the right stick X to mouse X, right stick Y to mouse Y. Map the trigger button of your choice (I use the top-right button) to left mouse button. All other mappings are done in Oblivion's options menu. Create a profile called "Oblivion" that maps to your oblivion.exe file.
  • When you reach Oblivion's main menu, try moving the mouse cursor with the right stick. If it tries to pull and drift against you, there is an easy (but undocumented, until now) fix: work the right stick around its axes vigorously for a few seconds, and it will recalibrate and work fine thereafter.
  • I found that setting the sensitivity fairly low on the gamepad joysticks was helpful -- they are really "hot" by default, but that's a matter of preference.
  • Important If you are running OBSE (OBlivion Script Extender) or any other mod that requires a custom launcher, there will be times when you start the game and Logitech's profiler fails to detect that oblivion.exe is running, because you launched it indirectly. The solution: In the Logitech Profiler, you can set it so that your Oblivion profile is always active. This works around the detection problem, and has the helpful side-effect of letting you use the gamepad as a mouse outside the game, if you wish.
  • (Optional) For running certain mods (like SB Saddlebags) that need the right mouse button, I found it helpful to map that from the right-stick pushbutton function (using the Profiler), since I don't often switch between first and third person view. YMMV.
  • As far as I can tell so far, the mode toggle (LED on and off button in the left-center section) isn't usable in Oblivion. If I find a way, I'll update this.
  • A few mods that look for specific key scan codes still require the keyboard to work unless you patch them to look for the gamepad button. This is a minor annoyance, not a catastrophic problem.

With appropriate mappings, I have been able to make this gamepad work very similarly to the PS3 SixAxis™ controller. It is not exact, but it is close enough to be comfortable to someone coming from the PS3 to the PC platform.

Crash on Load Up

So, I start the game, Get to the main menu, load OR continue my game. Sometimes you have to wait for up to 40s. The first time it happened to me I thought it had crashed, but the game eventually continued. rpeh •TCE 10:28, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Had the same problem, and I thought it's because of my old system. The problem turns out had a easy fix: Basically edit Oblivion.ini file in the game save folder and remove anything after STrackLevelUpPath= (see: http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/148530-oblivion-level-up-crash/).

same with me, except when i pressed "new game" a white screen popped up i , at first thought it was the brightness, i turned it down and pressed return and it crashed! i was like "what the hell?!" it happened every time as well a the white screen i could see the hud and the character creator but everything was white after i created my char. it happened EVERY SINGLE TIME i loaded the game..... can i fix this easy or do i need a new video card?

HELP I am stuck, I have NO clue what I am doing, I m no techie! This si what it says when I try to play the game.

Menus and load screens have lines?

When i am loading oblivion after my computer has been on overnight the load screen and menu screens has gaps in the graphics. These gaps are random and they are dependent upon where my laser is on my CRT monitor. What can i do to fix this without having to restart?

Main map issues

My map is showing the icons for caves and such yet the rest of the map is pure white. I just went through a oblivion gate came back out went to my main map to fast travel and it was all white except icons of places. I have no clue if this is a bug or something or what but when I loaded a previous game it was white too. I tried closing the game and starting it back up and it went back to normal but every now and then it does it again. Am I the only one with this problem? — Unsigned comment by Nephilim (talkcontribs) on 8 January 2011

The map is stored as one large bitmap. If you're on the PC, you've probably got a mod conflict - read the readme. If you're on a console, your disc is probably scratched. rpeh •TCE 06:55, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Video problems

Whenever I run the game 2 two things happen with the graphics. First if I'm using the HDR lighting choice all I get for the game is a dark blue, black background and the Hud, I can move around and interact with things but I can't see anything. Now if i go and change it from HDR light to either Bloom or no effect, everything is painfully bright, the tutorial for instance should be a dark cavern, instead rather it hurts my eyes it's so bright. My system specs: 64-bit processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz RAM: 4.00 GB graphics: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

any solutions or suggestions?

Hey, I had the same problem I currently have the same Graphics Card as you and what you need to do to fix it is to:

1.Start up the game to the main menu.

2.Click options this should bring up what adapter you are using to play the game and under that go to the lighting and set it to NONE then click O.K and play that should fix it. It fixed it for me tell me if it does for you.

Black character upon going 3rd person

Every time third person view is shown, my character appears as a black model. Literally pitch black. Entering a new cell fixes it. Go in to 3rd person and the problem is back again.

Waterfront Freeze

My oblivion disc plays great for how old it is, but I have one minor freeze problem. Whenever I go to the waterfront past all the houses (by the far exit/entrance), the game freezes occasionally. I need a fix to this, and quick. — Unsigned comment by 98.226.222.237 (talk) at 18:45 on 12 March 2011 (UTC)

If you are on the Xbox360 clean the disc and examine it for scratches, if it is scratched you'll probably have to get a new copy. You can usually pick up a copy for like twenty dollars now a days so this should be an easy solution. Then install the disc to your Xbox hard-drive so the disc is accessed less, reducing the risk of it being damaged. On the PC try re-installing the game, after backing up your saves of course (copy your save folder to somewhere else). If you are using mods disable any that are effecting the Waterfront. I can't really help you out more than this as you didn't give the most precise explanation of your game copy, platform etcetera, etcetera. If these don't work give us a more detailed description of your problem and I'll see if we can help you. --AKB Talk Contribs Email 18:45, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

By the way, I'm a 360 TES'er. — Unsigned comment by 98.226.222.237 (talk) at 10:08 on March 13, 2011

The Waterfront freeze is a common problem with users who have the Bananasplit Better Cities Mod and the Unique Landscapes Mod. A lot of users who have Apachii's Goddess Store Mod also report being unable to enter/exit through any waterfront doors without CTD. The only workaround found so far is to disable all related mods that alter the Waterfront landscape or structures. This problem has not been resolved simply through the TES4Edit cleaning function. -SigonellaPC3

Lockups

Ladies and Gentlemen... Been doing computers since the 60's just to establish a little background, not to brag or anything. Played the original Oblivion and love it so much that I came back to try it again. Only thing is that now that it is locking up so much, I remember why I quit playing it last time. There is something definitely wrong with THE GAME, not cards, not storage or anything else... it is definitely the game itself (PC version). I ran it fine on an older P2 and it ran great until you get further into the game. I know run it on a P4 QUAD CORE kick butt custom built, and NO CHANGE. Still the same issue. The programmers screwed this up not the hardware. When you have played it as long as I have on as many machines as I have and you still have the same issue it is definitely SOFTWARE. Sad, because this is most likely the better of all the RPGs I have ever played. I am highly anticipating the 5 version and I hope it works!!! For now we just need to plug along as best we can. I did stop doing quick saves as they NEVER came back online when asked for. I went to HARD saves and it was fine for a little bit but now it is locking up on the reloads of them also. UGH... May just have to can this too. NUTZ!

New crash-on-startup cause/solution help.

I added a new Cause 5 to the crash-on-startup section. I am unfamiliar with the AMD control panel, and could not be as exact as I would have liked in explaining how to disable additional monitors. Could someone who has an AMD/ATI graphics card please check to make sure that information is correct. Thanks a bunch. Tehori 16:12, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

Game crashes when I am near desolate mine

My game crashes when I am doing a quest for Fighter's Guild which is to go to desolate mines and clear it from goblins.

Game crashes whenever I cast a spell or use a weapon (including my fists)

Whenever I try to cast a spell or swing a weapon, my game freezes. It happens fairly often and its getting really annoying. I have a crash fix for this, but it only works with windows xp (i use windows 7) and even if I did have XP I wouldnt know how to install it, pls help

Have you tried to install it? It should come with a readme file telling you what to do.--Corevette789 20:08, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Character Control Bug

I am playing TES Oblivion for Xbox 360 and i was just going my mages guild quest and when i left the arcane University i noticed that my character was in 3rd person and when i went to turn around it moved the camera and not the character so i could look directly at the front of my character. I cannot attack, and when i turn around i run forward and cannot change direction even if im looking other way. I have also tried all other saves but it is all the same...

Please Help!! — Unsigned comment by 92.18.66.160 (talk) on 15 June 2011

By pressing in both sticks at the same time puts your character into third person camera edit mode. You can set the camera you want for third person in this mode. I'm wondering if you did this during the loading screen and are now stuck like this. --Manic 19:12, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Mine just did the same thing and I couldn't figure out how to fix it but I did like he said and clicked in both sticks several time but it didn't work. Then I did it and casted a spell and now it's working perfectly fine back in first person mode. Hope this helps.

Ok I'm the guy who just posted the above comment . It worked.... For a while now it doesn't and I'm stuck in 3rd person again. I think if bethesdas going to make a game this dynamic they Need to stop worrying about item cloning glitches and floating trees and start fixing bugs that threaten to end a game like this one. God I hope skyrim isn't like this.

Black Screen

the HUD appears, objects in the game still exist, i can hit menu and it appears, only the world is black i cant see anything at all, its like a curtian is infront of the camera. ive changed brightness setting and done everything an average person would know how to do. it worked the first time i ran it and then it just stopped afterwords... help. — Unsigned comment by 75.140.120.202 (talk) at 21:14 on 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Have you tried putting your graphics on the default settings?

This problem can usually be a quick fix if you just turn off the HDR lighting in the video settings. I'm not exactly sure why it does this, but im almost positive that most low end or just certain VRam cards do not support this setting. If that does not work there have been instances where the problem is fixed by turning the int. shadows (in the video settings as well) all the way off or down most of the way. I hope this help with these problems for other oblivion players also.

Can't loot corpses or any containers

On the PC version of Oblivion, for some reason I can't loot any corpses or containers. If i try to when i pull it up, it just takes me out of the inventory screen. I've tried resetting the controls to default and I've tried every control on the keyboard and mouse. No idea why it won't work. If any one has any ideas on how to fix this, I'd be glad if you posted them.

Re this edit... I'm sorry, but until I see some positive reviews from people I know and trust, I'm not sure that I like the idea of UESP recommending an EXE download. Major issues

I am really not sure whether the problems are caused by the game or by the system. I am playing on a PS3 and occasionally (but recently with more frequency) the game sounds turn off and within 5 minutes the game crashes. Also, when I restart the system, the disk is not recognized sometimes and if it is the game might not start (No Bethesda symbol, just a black screen). Even if I get through all that, if I try to talk to someone the game will crash. The only way to turn off the system is cutting the power since everything becomes unresponsive. Again I don't know if this is the HDMI cable having issues with sound, the disk itself, in-game software or the PS3 overheating. The game has been rendered all but unplayable for more than 5 minutes if at all. Solutions, a diagnosis or even just background info on the symptoms would be appreciated.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. Each god has at least 3 wayshrines. (Some have 4, can't remember which ones, though.) The map that the Prophet gives you marks one wayshrine to each god, though you can use the other ones as well. FallingKnife 16:23, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

Game Will Freeze After About 5 Minutes Of Playing

Since I have done a master restart to my computer and had to reinstall Oblivion, there has been one issue that I have not previously had. After playing the game for what seems about 5 minutes, the game has me loose control of my character, in game movement and time is still being applied but I can make no command to my character.

Yellow Exclamation Point Problem.

So, I haven't played Oblivion for ages because I got caught up in Portal, and I had a red ring incident due to ventilation problems, but that is resolved now. Anyway, I was playing awhile ago. I have the GOTY edition for 360. I have no other DLC, just SI and KotN. I loaded my last save and I found myself in Bliss. I decided to return to Cyrodiil, and what's the first thing I see when I fast travel to the door? Big freakin' yellow box. Right behind the table with the book. I think it was supposed to be a rock. I went on through to Cyrodiil with no problem. Then I fast travel to Nocturnal's shrine to complete that quest. In place of the shrine? Big freakin' yellow box. Grr. Travel to Anvil. Yellow box on a rock by the pond. So they aren't like everywhere, but they are a problem and prevent me from completing at least the daedra quests. I've never uninstalled anything, never had any mods (cos I'm a good girl) and yeah. I've seen like one in the past but never this many. Any advice? Shall I just go ahead and try clearing the cache? I read on a site that someone had a similar problem, but clearing the cache made it worse. Unfortunately there were no answers on that one.

Small save problem

Okay it all started when I found a REALLY old save from before I had previously deleted oblivion due to system instability. Anywho, I decided to load it up to for the rush of memories. To my surprise it worked. A bit. It crashed 5 minutes later but oh well. Its save # was around 860, and now whenever I save my game its # is around 900. This bug is purely cosmetic as I can just rename the file and it works, but is there anyway to get my saves back on track again? 24.150.126.194 02:35, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

 : I'm in the same position with my laptop, and this didn't work for me. My laptop (T420s) is designed for playing games, and most games play...but I am unable to get Oblivion to work. I've set my computer to run with a single core through msconfig, and that does nothing. What am I missing?98.234.49.89 07:13, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

you dont have a proper tech respond? I would like an way to reconfigure the Software. Thanks...

SOLUTION: I have the exact same laptop (Lenovo W520) and had the same problem. A friend finally found the solution. It had to do with Corel WinDVD software (in reality I uninstalled all three Corel DVD related SW that came with the laptop but the WinDVD one is the last I uninstalled) After uninstalling the software, Oblivion worked without a hitch.

oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close

I have had oblivion installed and there have been no prblems until about a month ago.The gamescreen turns into a window and then comes up with a error message saying "Oblivion has encontered a message and needs to close".This also results in my computer freexing.

If it is a problem with a save could loading a previous save work? — Unsigned comment by 92.9.156.214 (talk) at 16:11 on 27 November 2011

Oblivion Launcher Not Responding

My Oblivion Launcher will not work. This is bad because I like to mod and now cannot access Data Files or remove mods I have in place. I can still run the Oblivion.exe from Program Files, but every time I try to open the launcher, it pops up, the music plays, and it stops responding immediately. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and done just about everything else... Any suggestions? 75.144.191.241 07:57, 17 December 2011 (UTC) jb89121

Abomb (animation bug) tips for PS3 users!

Unlike PC users, there is no abomb patch (Wrye Bash, e.g.) that PS3 users can download. Unfortunately, everybody gets the abomb bug if they play their characters long enough; for PS3 users, I've read it's usually @400 hours, give or take 100. For PC users, it happens even earlier, but again, they can fix it. PS3 users can't. Still, it is possible to keep playing the game, although a lot of the charm goes out of it. IF you want to keep playing the same character and if you want to finish your questlines, here are a few hard-earned tips: 1.) Try to do them as quickly as possible. Why? Because apart from frozen doors and flames, another aspect of the abomb, and a much more serious one, is that certain geographic areas in the game will become corrupt as the game advances. What that means is, when your character enters a particular zone (quest-related zones in particular, though not exclusively), the game will freeze and you will be forced to reload an earlier save. Further, as the game goes on, more areas (game cells) become affected. Sometimes your character will even enter an area once (wilderness entrance to a dungeon, e.g.) but will not be able to get back to the previously accessible cell (game freezes when trying to exit the dungeon). You will never know when the freeze might happen, so EXPECT it to happen and save your progress accordingly. 2)Save very frequently across multiple saves. Do NOT rely on the autosave. ; 3)To speed up animation (opening doors, traps, display cases, etc.), fire 10-20 spells at a nearby point (the number varies--I use a low-cost flare spell, though others will probably work). Why? Because, after multiple, continuous spell castings, the "frozen" (i.e. abomb-afflicted) spell effects caused by your character will "flow" again, along with all other animations (I don't know why, maybe because the screen overloads?). As a result, doors open, traps spring, etc. Sometimes exiting and re-entering a zone helps too, but doing that is much less reliable than multi-casting. 4) There are certain instances when, as a captive audience, your character won't be able to move, hence, not cast any spells (for instance, in the cinematics with Martin during the end of the main quest or right before Jyggalag's entrance in the Shivering Isles), but you'll still need to speed up the animation. In these situations, try pressing the round PS3 button on your controller on and off--it takes you in and out of the game (without actually quitting) but helps advance the animation. You'll lose most of the drama (and the pretty effects, of course) because the animation becomes more like a slide show, but at least the story will advance. Just so you know, one of my PS3 characters logged over 1,000 hours, the last 500 mainly using these tips. To be fair, many of those post-abomb hours were frustrating and painful, but in the end, I had the character I set out to get. If you don't want to abandon the hundreds of hours already invested, you might want to give these pointers a try. Good luck, hope this helped.71.224.13.163 18:05, 23 March 2011 (UTC)Marcus
