Mandil is a Wood Elf agent, and a member of the Thieves Guild. She lives in the Imperial City's Elven Gardens District with Othrelos. Mandil is an advanced trainer in Security and can thus point you in the right direction to receive master training. She claims lockpicking is just a hobby, but as she is a member of the Thieves Guild, there is reason to doubt her.
She was meant to sleep every night from midnight to 6am but doesn't, due to a bug. Instead, she spends the night pacing the ground floor, continuing her wandering well into the day, offering her training services starting from 6am. On weekdays, at 1pm she heads out to the Market District, while on Sundas she will instead elect to visit the Arboretum. Either way, she always returns home at 6pm to enjoy a two-hour dinner with Othrelos before starting her restless nighttime wandering.
There are three exceptions to this schedule. First, at midday on the 29th of each month, as long as Witseidutsei is still alive, Mandil heads to the Black Horse Courier offices and stay there for a brief moment, suggesting she was intended to play a role in the unfinished Imperial Express quest. Secondly, during the Light the Dragonfires quest, Mandil (like most Imperial City citizens) is confined to her home.
Finally, on the fifth of each month at 6am she embarks on a trip to Anvil, during which she may be attacked and killed like most traveling NPCs. She crosses the Talos Bridge and heads south on the Red Ring Road before finally heading west on the Gold Road while doing her best to avoid the wildlife near the many Ayleid ruins and caves. She reaches the famous vineyards near Skingrad after twelve hours of traveling and finally reaches Anvil at 10am on the morning of the 6th. She only spends two hours at The Count's Arms, before heading back home, which she reaches around 4pm on the 7th.
Mandil wears a set of middle-class clothing: a brown shirt, light brown linens and a pair of doeskin shoes. She is armed with an iron dagger and she carries her house key and a small amount of gold.
Related Quests[edit]
- Security Training: Act as a courier for the master of security so he will train you.
- The Ultimate Heist: Steal an Elder Scroll for the Gray Fox, and for glory!
Quest-Related Events[edit]
The Ultimate Heist[edit]
Once you've fenced enough items, Thieves Guild messenger Amusei will track you down and inform you that the Gray Fox will be waiting for you at Othrelos' House. Once the quest starts, Mandil will quickly head down to unlock the door ahead of your arrival, before staying confined upstairs while you speak to the Gray Fox. After this she will resume her usual schedule, though she will head upstairs again when you successfully return from the Palace.
Security Training[edit]
As an advanced trainer of Security, she will point you toward the master trainer, J'baana. Asking her about "Training" when your Security skill has reached 70 will have her tell you:
- Training
- "Only one has a better mastery of locks than I. You need to speak to J'baana. You can find him imprisoned at the Imperial Legion headquarters."
If you ask her about training again, she will provide you with a brief reminder of what she already stated:
- "You must find J'baana, and learn from him."
Dialogue[edit]
Despite her affiliation with the Thieves Guild, Mandil claims that her skills are just a hobby when she greets you:
- "I'm Mandil. I'm a lady of leisure, but I do some Advanced Training in Security. Just a hobby, of course."
- Imperial City
- "It pays to know about locks and lockpicks. It's just a hobby, of course, but the average citizen feels more secure when he understands his own locks."
Rumors[edit]
The citizens of the Imperial City can often be heard talking about Mandil's "hobby", commenting:
- "I understand Mandil has some rather nimble fingers."
- "Lose the key to your house? Find Mandil. He [sic] can get in, I'll bet."
To which others will reply:
- "I understand he'll [sic] teach others to pick locks. If everyone knew how, we wouldn't have to carry around so many keys."
- "I'm glad he's [sic] willing to teach others. Lockpicking has gotten so much harder recently. It's more interesting, but it's harder."
Others can be heard asking each other:
- "Do you know Mandil? I hear he's [sic] good with locks."
- "Is it true that Mandil can open almost any lock?"
To which others will reply:
- "I've heard he's [sic] good with a lockpick."
- "Rumor has it that he'll [sic] teach others to pick locks.":
Notes[edit]
- The rumor about lockpicking having gotten harder recently is likely a reference to Morrowind, where lockpicking was a simple game of chance and required no actual player input.
Bugs[edit]
- When asked about rumors, some citizens will refer to Mandil as male when talking about her.
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 1.7.0, fixes this bug.
- Mandil's sleep package points to her editor location on the ground floor, which contains no beds. As a result, she can never find somewhere to sleep and instead spends her nights wandering around.
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.4.0, addresses this issue. She will now sleep with Othrelos in the bed upstairs.
