Mages Guild scholars are NPCs that are found in the Arcane University of the Imperial City. They serve no major purpose and their foremost job is lecturing the apprentices. Unlike the apprentices, who you can order to follow you as Arch-Mage, the scholars will treat you exactly like they did when you were an apprentice yourself. Stealing from or attacking a scholar will still get you kicked out of the Mages Guild.

All Mage Scholars wear a standard mage's robe and a pair of russet felt shoes. In combat they rely on an iron dagger and a second, enchanted, dagger of the best possible quality for your level. In addition, all Mage Scholars will be able to cast 3 Destruction spells (2 weak, 1 powerful), 3 weak Conjuration spells (2 Bound Armor and 1 Summon), 1 powerful Restoration spell and 1 powerful Illusion spell (always strongest for the Scholar's skill level).

All Mage Scholars have very similar and rather monotonous schedules: they will spend most of their day wandering around the University Campus, at times conversing with one another about recent discoveries. At 10am and 4pm, every Mage Scholar has a random chance of lecturing the apprentices for two hours about doomstones and runestones at the podium outside the Praxographical Center. While they will all sleep in the basement of the Mages' Quarters, half of them will go to bed at midnight and sleep until 6am, while the other three from 6pm until midnight.

The Mage Scholars always seem to be too concentrated on their studies to pay you any notice, even if you are Arch-Mage. When you speak to them they will casually dismiss you by saying: "Hmm? Yes, yes, I'm sure you've got something exceedingly important to say. But the Apprentices do not teach themselves, now do they? Good day." or more eloquently by asking you: "Why do the guards insist on letting you rabble inside University grounds? Take your pedestrian gawkery to the Arena! Begone!"

Oddly enough, there is one High Elf Mage Scholar in the University that will talk to you, provided his disposition is above 30. He has no unique dialogue, however.

Conversations[edit]

Mage Scholars will sometimes greet other NPCs and the player with the following lines:

"Why do the guards insist on letting you rabble inside University grounds? Take your pedestrian gawkery to the Arena! Begone!"

"Hmm? Yes, yes, I'm sure you've got something exceedingly important to say. But the Apprentices do not teach themselves, now do they? Good day."

It is also possible for them to engage in conversation with other Mage Scholars and Mage Apprentices, which goes as follows:

Speaker Speech
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "I know you're busy, but I need a moment of your time"
"Excuse me, fellow magister. Is now a good time to talk?"
"Ahh, magister. I just remembered, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
"Fellow magister, may I speak with you?"
Mage Apprentices only "Magister! We must talk! Please... It's rather urgent."
Mage Scholars only "Pardon me, noble Scholar, but... Could I speak with you a minute?"
"Apprentice! Wait right there. We need to talk"
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "I've got a moment, but little more. What do you need?"
"Well... All right. But please, be brief. I have some... research I need to tend to..."
"Hmm? Oh, yes, of course. What is it?"
Mage Scholars only "I'm listening. Speak."
"I guess that depends on how much of my precious time you need...."
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "I'd been thinking about our conversation yesterday, and decided to consult some of the ancient texts. You were right! About everything!"
"Well... You'll recall my hypothesis? The one I mentioned the other day? I'll have you know, I was right! And to think, you actually doubted me!"
"I won't take up much of your time. But I felt you should know, I've had a breakthrough!"
"I've been doing some research in the Mystic Archives. What I discovered... It's more than we could have hoped for!"
"Do you remember that matter you asked me to look into? I have some new information. In short... What you proposed IS possible!"
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "Hmph. That just goes to show you how little we really know about the arts magicka. Fireballs and frost bolts are one thing, but this? Incredible..."
"Well, it's not surprising, really. This is Necromancy we're talking about, after all. Such a hideous discipline! All that blood and rotting flesh..."
"Excellent! This is exciting news indeed, magister! Just think of the possible advances in Restoration and Alteration!"
"Hmmmm... Yes... Yes... It's as I suspected after all. But I wonder... Will this affect the Destruction discipline as well, or merely Conjuration?"
"[Gasp!] Surely you're joking! Are... Are you sure? I mean, I'm excited by this news of course, but think of the ramifications!"
"Ha ha! Magister, do you realize what this means? Do you have any idea how this could impact the study of magic?"
Mage Scholars only "Good, good. But let's not be too hasty. We must be sure of our findings. If there's any doubt, any doubt at all, it will weaken our position."
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "You do realize this raises quite a few questions? The overall impact on Alchemy is a complete unknown. And what of Spellmaking?"
"There are, of course, some other mitigating factors, but I'll need to investigate a bit further. The overall impact on Alchemy is a complete unknown."
"I just wonder, will this affect the work that's already been done in the field of Illusion? Or jeopardize the new advances in Conjuration?"
"Hmm-hmm. Exactly. But now what? Do I continue with that line of study, or shall I delve into something more archaic? Say... ancient Ayleid curses?"
"There's more research to be done, of course, but the initial findings are quite encouraging. I'll let you know when I have some more information."
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "Let me know as soon as you discover anything else. Oh, and best not tell the others about this just yet. We must be sure, you understand?"
"We shouldn't keep this news a secret. Feel free to tell the others, but let them know the complications we face. We'll continue our talk later."
"Let us part now and see what we can come up with separately. We'll meet sometime later and compare notes."
Mage Scholars only "You're [sic] work never ceases to amaze me, noble Scholar. I... I can't tell you how much it means to me that you'd share your findings."
"I'd consider it a personal favor if you'd give this matter top priority. When you learn more, let me know. Keep up the excellent work, magister."
"You should continue with your research. Consult some of the older tomes in the Mystic Archives. We'll talk again later after you learn more."
"I commend you on your diligence, magister. I'll be sure to bring this matter to the Arch-Mage. Now please, continue the excellent work."
Mage Apprentices or Mage Scholars "Farewell, magister. May your spells never falter."
"Until later, then."
"I'll take my leave of you then, fellow magister."
"When I know more, I'll come find you."
Mage Scholars only "We'll speak again later, Apprentice. Now go! Your studies await!"
Mage Apprentices "Very good, then. I'll get right on it."
"With your permission, I take my leave of you now, Scholar."
