You need to get the votes from all the other Redoran councilors before he'll challenge you.

Recodnition problem[edit]

When i bring the guys son back to him he will not recodnize that he is there i dont have the note and key so i am wondering if anyone can help me.

A Remark to freeing Sarethis son[edit]

I had problems with this: While defeating the guards is not a problem for my character, it incurred a bounty. Often the son dies during the fights - which ends the game, or makes the main quest impossible.

I propose to add the following: Taking the key and be seen is discouraged: It leads to a bounty, since you have to fight the guards. And - perversely - after this the prisoner will not talk to the character, because he has a bounty. One would think he has other problems, but no... So taking the key must be done unseen. After talking to the prisoner, when you leave, the character is attacked. This is actually a silly situation, while both guards attack the character, the prisoner fights too, and dies easily. This is not the ideal way to do this. It also leads to a bounty. A second fight ensues in the entrance area, but not always. But this fight is more nasty, since the other persons beside the guards join in. Running to the entrance and leaving is the best way.

My solution - without bounty and without killing anybody: Use the spell Calm Humanoid on both guards in the Venim Manor Right Wing! You can leave then without trouble, both are being very nice - as long as the spell lasts, so hurry up.. The fight in the entrance area is obviously scripted, since calming works only for 1-2 seconds. So you have to retry (or to scout), that no guard sees you, and the guards are usually far away, so you should run to the entrance. If you reach the entrance, the prisoner follows, and all is well. I managed it with the second try, the first try went wrong, because the spell did not work in the Entrance Hall.

Sorry for reviving but I didn’t see anything on the main page about this pacifist workaround. I can confirm that using a Calm Humanoid spell on the guards in Venim Manor does in fact allow for this section to be completed without battle. My spell parameters were Calm Humanoid 50 levels for 30 seconds on Target with a 50ft radius. I’m on Xbox GOTY and my run went as follows;
As soon as Varvur left the closet, Malsa became hostile. I calmed her and then Tirdas, waited for Varvur to catch up and left the Right Wing into the Private Quarters. Calmed the pair of guards as soon as I could (the AOE of my custom spell requires little accuracy, it just had to hit near them) and hightailed it to the left, turning around on the staircase to calm the other two before leaving the Private Quarters into the Manor Entrance. I cast Calm at the centrepiece of the Manor Entrance and was able to run through to the exit unharmed.
I noticed that if the guards had enough time to see you and draw a weapon before you got a spell off, calming would stop the hostility but Varvur would stop following me every three steps to turn around and raise his fists while shouting “Die” and the guards would sort of twist on the spot and shout back. I thought it was worth mentioning that while they can be calmed, they might get a bit sticky if you’re not quick enough. I still had no problem when this happened, it just took slightly longer.

Bolvyn Venim not in Arena glitch[edit]

There's a glitch where Bolvyn Venim may not appear in Arena after challenging you. This apparently may be related to Mod packages. If you experience this, use the console to place him in Arena with PlaceAtPc "Bolvyn Venim" 1,1,1
