Skeleton key[edit]

If you kill Jim Stacey will he drop the skeleton key? — Unsigned comment by 24.56.60.76 (talk)

Yes, he doesn't have it on him when alive (pickpocket doesn't work), but he is scripted to have it as soon as he dies. --DrPhoton 13:34, 24 March 2008 (EDT)

Master Thief?[edit]

The Notes say: "If you have already completed the Thieves Guild quest-line, then the Master Thief is you. You can tell Sjoring this, and he will instead ask you to reveal all the Guild's secrets. Whether you do so or not, the outcome is the same. He will attack you, and you will have to kill him." But how is this possible? To become Master Thief requires killing Sjoring. — Unsigned comment by 60.50.230.98 (talk)

True. I guess we need to wait for Lurlock to explain why he added that note. He may have simply been influenced by the journal entry, which suggests it might be possible to become Master Thief without killing Sjoring. For now, I've just slapped a verification request on the note. --Gaebrial 08:07, 1 April 2008 (EDT)
Hmm. I was looking at the dialogue options for Sjoring, and they put a bunch of stuff in there for what happens if you're already the Master Thief. Thinking about it, though, you may be right that this dialogue is completely innaccessable in the game. Though maybe if you do something like get all the way to just before Master Thief and then kill Jim Stacey? Somebody will have to test this. It may be that they intended for there to be multiple ways to become Master Thief, and this dialogue was put there in order to prevent a quest conflict if you chose another path, and that other path was ultimately scrapped or something. --TheRealLurlock Talk 08:45, 1 April 2008 (EDT)

When I first realised that it wasn't possible, I finished up the Thieves Guild quests except killing Sjoring, and was one rank away from Master Thief, and also did all the Fighters Guild quests except killing Jim Stacey. I then tried talking to Jim Stacey first, then Sjoring, but it didn't work. I then tried getting Sjoring's quest first, then Jim Stacey, hoping for Jim Stacey to relinquish his position earlier, but to no avail. — Unsigned comment by 60.50.231.80 (talk)

Well, in lieu of anybody coming along and explaining how this can be done, I have removed the note. --Gaebrial 09:08, 9 April 2008 (EDT)
The note has returned. It's worded differently, but is still implying it is possible to become Master Thief before killing Sjoring. I haven't been able to figure out if that's actually possible either. 37.160.236.35 18:15, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

Word placement?[edit]

According to what it says now Jim Stacey's right man attacks you after killing SJORING. Is that right? It seems more likely to me that he attacks you after killing STACEY because they're like sort of in the same room.--Catmaniac66 (talk) 04:41, 12 December 2012 (GMT)

STOP ADDING THIS BACK[edit]

There is no way you can be THE Master Thief with Sjoring still living! This is not up for debate! Do not add that back! Even if you can data-mine orphaned/abandoned lines of text implyng otherwise, it's still not implemented in any way. You can ONLY become Master Thief once Stacy sends you to kill Sjoring, YOU KILL HIM, you return to Stacy and then Stacy grants you the title and says he's returning to Redguard. — Unsigned comment by 100.11.103.236 (talk) at 06:12 on 14 May 2023 (UTC)

Calm down. No one's "adding this back"; this information has been in the article since 2017. You are correct that you cannot become the Master Thief of the Thieves Guild without killing Sjoring first. However, the Journal entry does exist in the game files and UESPWiki documents these entries even if they cannot be obtained. I have restored the Journal entry and added a note to the article explaining why it can't be obtained. — Wolfborn(Howl) 07:57, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
