The Warlock's Ring (also known as the Ring of the Warlock)[1] is an artifact originally owned by the Arch Mage Syrabane, an Aldmeri god-ancestor. In appearance, it is a ring with a large gemstone, either red or green in color. It is best known for its ability to reflect spells cast at its wearer and to fortify the wearer's speed and health, though it may have additional powers.[2]

History[edit]

First Era[edit]

In the late First Era, Syrabane judiciously used the ring to save many from the Thrassian Plague.[3] Because of this, he is attributed with helping to save the entire continent of Tamriel. The ring has passed hands many times, helping adventurers to reach their goals. No one may possess the ring for long, as it is said that the ring is Syrabane's alone to command.[2]

Second Era[edit]

The last living dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, at one point befriended the sorcerer Divayth Fyr.[4] At Fyr's behest, Yagrum Bagarn wrote a book that would later be known as Tamrielic Lore[5]:241 from the notes that he gathered over the centuries, listing the Warlock's Ring among various items of "unimaginable significance".[2] By the Interregnum, copies of this book circulated throughout Tamriel, providing some general information on the artifact to its readers.[6]

Third Era[edit]

The Warlock's Ring was uncovered by the Eternal Champion during the Imperial Simulacrum in either Morrowind or Elsweyr (reports vary).[1]

In 3E 405, an adventurer obtained the Warlock's Ring after doing a task for their knightly order. The agent defeated an arch-lich in the Iliac Bay area that was raising an army of undead. After putting a stop to the undead menace, the agent discovered a clue to the ring's whereabouts. Following the note's instructions, the agent followed the trail to a secluded wizard, who claimed that the Mages Guild stole the artifact from his great grandfather. After putting the spirit of the wizard's great grandfather to rest, the ghost revealed the location of the Mages Guild branch that stole the artifact from him. The agent ventured there and took the ring by brute force. However, there are conflicting accounts that the artifact centered around this story was actually a different one altogether, with Chrysamere (the most prominent), the Necromancer's Amulet, and the Staff of Magnus taking its place in the story.[7] A fake copy of the Warlock's Ring also appeared in the region before the Warp in the West occurred; it was created by a mage in an attempt to bribe an agent of Nocturnal who was sent to assassinate them. The fake ring functioned identically to the true artifact, but after several days it crumbled to dust. This account is also shaky, as some accounts claim Auriel's Bow or the Staff of Magnus was offered in its place.[8] Another source claims the ring was in the possession of Lady Brisienna Magnessen, a Blades operative. Brisienna offered the ring as payment in return for the Totem of Tiber Septim, which would give the Empire control of Numidium.[9][nb 1]

The ring resurfaced several years later in the possession of Vindamea Drethan, a powerful sorceress who lived in a cave on an island off the shore of Vvardenfell, along Azura's Coast. News of this reached the Mages Guild, and in 3E 427 Drethan was killed by the Nerevarine, who then claimed the ring.[10] Later that year, the Nerevarine sold the ring to Torasa Aram, who put it on display in her Museum of Artifacts in Mournhold.[11]

Fourth Era[edit]

The Warlock's Ring re-emerged around 4E 180, when the Warrior came across it during their journey. The ring is thought to have been looted from an extravagant chest.[12]

The ring later came into the possession of an elderly mage named Brutius who lived in Morthal. An avid fisherman, Brutius would lure victims into the marsh under the pretence of holding a fishing competition. Once far enough out of town, he would ambush his victims with help from his gang of vagrant bandit mages. Brutius eventually lost the Warlock's Ring when defending himself against a hammer blow from one of his victims. The ring came off and fell into the river east of Morthal, just northwest of Myrwatch.[13] Circa 4E 201, Brutius attempted to ambush the Last Dragonborn, resulting in the deaths of him and his fellow bandits. The Dragonborn learned of the location of the Warlock's Ring from his journal and managed to fish it out of the river.[14]

Notes[edit]

  • ^  In Daggerfall, Gortwog originally offered the same artifact as Lady Brisienna, the Warlock's Ring, in exchange for the Totem of Tiber Septim. Gortwog's reward was changed in patch v1.07.213 so he can offer Chrysamere instead. This patch was unsuccessful and stripped him of offering anything at all, requiring a third-party fix to correct it.
  • Previously in the Myrwatch Creation, a guild of rogue mages from Skyrim was mentioned to have found the Warlock's Ring on their journeys in Morrowind. It was brought to their headquarters at Myrwatch and stored there, to be held for use in the coming "great war" foreseen by their augurs.[UOL 1] The guild intended to assemble a great number of legendary artifacts in preparation for this conflict, but failed to obtain any others. It transpired that this great war was in fact the Oblivion Crisis of 3E 433, which the mages were ill-prepared to face.[15] However, the artifact wasn't featured in this Creation and the text was later changed in a patch to remove this detail.
