Lore:Tales and Tallows
Tales and Tallows is a holiday observed all over Tamriel on the 3rd of Hearthfire. It is a day associated with the dead and spirits, and while most people celebrate it, they still hold superstitious fears of the walking dead in the alleys, particularly the oldest and superstitious townsfolk, who fear evil entities will possess their bodies. Tales and Tallows also values necromancy, which is considered the oldest magical science.[1] Noble families will host parties and invite mages because of the holiday's superstitious nature.[2]
In their active years, the Mages Guild greatly benefitted during the holiday as magical items were typically sold at half price. Temples are closed to the public, however, to privately pray for the dead.[1] In Morrowind, this holiday is known as Ancestor's Day, and unlike some Tamrielans that view it with superstition, it is a pleasant reunion of family and friends around the clan hearth, where people make food and partake in gift-giving. The celebration is generally quiet and respectful for the hearth spirits.[3]
Notes[edit]
- Though sources claim that the 3rd of Hearthfire is also Nocturnal's summoning day,[4] the summoning day in Daggerfall is actually on the 8th of Hearthfire.[5]
